Live Review: Franz Ferdinand at Aviva Studios (Factory International) in Manchester 18 January 2025
Words: Andy Hughes Having departed Aviva Studios with a spring in my step on Saturday evening, it was a bit of a downer to encounter a gang of loud, opinionated Mancunians on the tram home letting the entire carriage know their thoughts on the gaff, all of which were negative. Apparently no one even goes there, which was at odds with the hive of activity that I’d seen with my actual human eyes…

Franz: I should name my porcelain dolls.
Me: Even the cursed ones?
Franz: They're not cursed.
Me: Cuuuursed.
#he has four. two pairs. the bigger ones are cute. the smaller ones look like they have seen hell#we don't know how old they are. as they have numbers on them but no name or country of origin#which does suggest they're from before that was bandatory. so like. 1860's or something#we might be completely off tho. we are no experts. and there is no factory mention on any of them#-wolfgang#about franz

"in this painting, the artist focused attention on the laborers who spend their lunch break milling around a horse-drawn bakery wagon in the shadows of the hulking factories" … the cleveland museum of art
"as soon as you're born, they make you feel small by giving you no time instead of it all till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all a working class hero is something to be a working class hero is something to be" … john lennon
"our winters are very long here, very long and very monotonous. but we don't complain about it downstairs, we're shielded against the winter. oh, spring does come eventually, and summer, and they last for a while, but now, looking back, spring and summer seem too short, as if they were not much more than a couple of days, and even on those days, no matter how lovely the day, it still snows occasionally" … franz kafka
"little darlin', it's been a long, cold, lonely winter little darlin', it feels like years since it's been here here comes the sun, doo-doo-doo-doo here comes the sun, and i say it's alright" … george harrison

It’s Wednesday and part of me is still coming down from the high of a weekend full of boardgames! For the first time since March 2019, the annual (until COVID, damn it) Terminal City Tabletop Convention was held in my hometown of Vancouver this last weekend. There were new organizers this time around and the venue has moved to downtown Vancouver, which is really convenient for me! I still…

When Franz Kafka had "Written Nothing"
24 December 1910. It is midnight, but since I have slept very well, that is an excuse only to the extent that by day I would have written nothing. The burning electric light, the silent house, the darkness outside, the last waking moments, they give me the right to write even if it be only the most miserable stuff. And this right I use hurriedly. That’s the person I am.
28 November 1911. Have written nothing for three days.
07 January 1912. If I should now, in the evening, return to my relatives, I shall, since I have written nothing that I could enjoy, not appear stranger, more despicable, more useless to them than I,do to myself.
25 February 1912. I have written nothing for so long because of having arranged an evening for Löwy in the banquet room of the Jewish Town Hall on 18 February, at which I delivered a little introductory lecture on Yiddish. For two weeks I worried for fear that I could not produce the lecture. On the evening before the lecture I suddenly succeeded.
09 March 1914. I have written nothing for a year, nor shall I be able to write anything in the future; in my head there is and remains the one single thought, and I am devoured by it.
03 November 1914. Since August, the fourth day on which I have written nothing. The letters are the cause of it; I ’ll try to write none at all or only very short ones.
20 December 1921. Undeniably, there is a certain joy in being able calmly to write down: ‘Suffocation is inconceivably horrible.’ Of course it is inconceivable that is why I have written nothing down.
And When He "Wrote Nothing"
31 January 1912. Wrote nothing.
01 June 1912. Wrote nothing.
07 June 1912. Bad. Wrote nothing today. Tomorrow no time.
10 August 1912. Wrote nothing. Was in the factory and breathed gas in the engine-room for two hours. The energy of the foreman and the stoker before the engine, which for some undiscoverable reason will not start. Miserable factory.
13 March 1915. Got up at nine o’clock. Didn’t go home for supper, nor to Max’s either, where there was a gathering tonight. Reasons: lack of appetite, fear of getting back late in the evening; but above all the thought that I wrote nothing yesterday, that I keep getting farther and farther from it, and am in danger of losing everything I have laboriously achieved these past six months.

Drop the podcast bestie! (Please)
it’s the high performance podcast (you have to download their app to get it for free right now but it will be available for free soon on regular platforms) - in case anyone doesn’t want to download the app but wants to know some of the things alex talked about:
- for context he recorded the first part of the podcast initially and talked a lot about his struggles at red bull and what he went through as a teenager and then went back to the podcast hosts and said actually can we do a part two bc i want to talk about how im coping better now
- he says he isolated himself from all of his friends when everything was happening with his mum and he became an introverted person and still carries that introvertedness with him now from going through that time
- alex was told he was promoted to red bull when he went to see helmut in austria to talk about the practicalities of his move to monaco and just as the meeting ended helmut said oh by the way ur in the red bull seat, here’s the number for ur engineer maybe speak to him but also actually u can’t bc the factory is closed for summer but yeah ur going to be announced in about two hours. bye
- he says he didn’t enjoy being a driver in 2020 at all. literally said he was destroyed. he spoke about the pressure and how he deleted his social media due to the incessant mocking but he also felt like even though he had done that he couldn’t avoid it because although he didn’t see it directly he’d just be asked about it on media day every week anyway
- he was asked about what help was offered to him in 2020 when he was struggling and whilst he said the team cared there wasn’t really anything or anyone to help him. alex and his trainer patrick got their own psychologist towards the end of 2020 and then in 2021 when alex was out of the sport he assembled a team of his own who weren’t the most experienced but who he knew cared for him and would fight to the death for him (said he took jacques from red bull to be his manager because he always fought his corner no matter how tough the situation was)
- he was told about being dropped by horner in a meeting at the end of the season but he already knew because it had been posted in the media before they’d even met
- he described 2021 as a really weird time as he needed to boost his stock with red bull and all the other teams but to do that he needed to give as much as he possibly could to improve the car he had just been kicked out of, so when max said at pre season testing that the car was so much more stable it was a strange feeling knowing that that’s what he needed and he wasn’t able to do anything with it
- he compiled a sexy spreadsheet for team principals in the paddock showing that as much as he struggled in 2020 he was on reflection closer to max pace wise than maxs’ current teammate and maxs’ teammate before alex
- when asked to describe where he is now he said he’s happier than he’s ever been. he’s driving better than ever and is mentally in the best headspace he’s ever been in
- he says he comes up with scenarios in his head from the last 4/5 years and as soon as he has a sort of deja vu struggle moment he uses it to show himself he’s overcome that hurdle
- he said the older he gets the more he doesn’t feel the need to write things down the way he used to because he feels more confident in himself
- the best piece of advice he’s ever received is from franz tost who said “alex if there’s one thing you need to learn about formula one it’s don’t give a fuck” and he said he didn’t really understand it until he started struggling and then he realised that he cared too much
- when asked about what advice he would give to teenage alex now he said it’s hard because he isn’t the most confident now and he knows teenage alex wouldn’t listen bc his parents would always try and fill him with confidence so he said he’d try and shake younger him and tell him that it’s true what they’re telling you
#and there it is!!!!!#alex and his complex trust and mental health issues disguised as introvertedness. wbk!#asks#anon#alex albon

Warhammer Gaslamp: Introduction
The year is 2725 IC...some two hundred years since the Age of Crisis. The time of Karl Franz I, the "Fourth Deliverer of the Empire," has long past, as has the age of knights and dragons – throughout the Old World, magic itself is a dying art.
The Empire of Man is stronger than ever before, but it is an Empire that runs on coal and iron, held together with roads of steel track, and powered by boiling, thumping hearts that pump steam and gas through the veins of the mightiest industrial power in the world. The forests remain, but they have dwindled in size, cut down to feed the endless hunger of the great metropolises, the mighty smokestacks of Nuln, Talabheim, New Averheim, and greatest of all, the bright gaslights of mighty Altdorf ("The Big Turnip"), and a hundred smaller cities that light the night skies.
The Neüscience of the Imperial Technomancers has increased national prosperity a hundredfold, improved the health and well-being of the common citizens, and helped the Imperial Army, Navy, and Airkorps put the endless hordes of Khaos on the backfoot for generations. In spite of (or because of?) this, Imperial society has become increasingly divided between the elite who profit from the new economy of high finance and heavy industry, and those millions of unskilled and semi-skilled laborers whose endless toil keeps them only ever one step ahead of the breadline and the bailiff. Meanwhile, the mounting toll of industrial pollution, epidemic disease, industrial accidents, and Neüscientific “experiments” running amok raises new questions about the high cost of success.
Politics has become ever more fractious. The Imperial Parliament is divided between the House of the People, where the Farmer-Artisan Party (representing a coalition of the Craft Guilds and their fellow urban workers, and a significant minority of rural laborers and small farmers) holds the plurality, and the House of the Nobles, where the Liberal-Conservative Party (representing both the traditional landed aristocracy and the new monied elite) holds power, and the two clash fiercely over labor rights, taxation, industrial regulation, and social welfare. Holding the uneasy balance of power is Emperor Karl-Franz XIV, his "Iron" Chancellor Ludwig von Ostermark, and their smaller Patriotic Party (largely supported by veterans and members of the civil service), who try to maintain Imperial unity and industrial production in the face of the "Threat from the Black North."
In the streets and on the shop-floors, the captains of industry known as the Great Monopolhauses (allied and often intermarried with the nobility) deploy their legions of spies and private soldiers against the rising strength of the Laborer’s Guild, who are mobilizing in the factories by the hundreds of thousands, and the industrial spies and gunthugs are kept in check only by the still-potent might of the Craft Guilds who fear and resent their industrial upstart rivals but trust the bosses even less.
The religion that once united an Empire today divides it, as Orthodox Volkmarites and Radical Hussites split over matters of class and faith. Although the two factions are still nominally part of the same Sigmarite religion, and the Church of Sigmar is held together by the firm hand of the Emperor, the two factions compete fiercely over theology and dogma, and positions within the Church unto the Grand Theogonacy itself. To the north, the philosophy professor-turned-street preacher Nietzsche von Zarathustein has single-handedly revived the fortunes of the Cult of Ulric with his fiery doctrine of Neo-Ulricism and his best-seller Man unt Wulf-Man. From the great industrial heartland of the south, the radical scholar Mark Karhl preaches the overthrow of the status quo as an inherently exploitative regime, and his pamphlet The Scarlet Platform and his massive three-volume treatise on political economy, Der Gelden (which almost no one has completed), inspire many young radical students and workers to join the revolutionary Scarlet Party and the ranks of the Laborer’s Guild. Are rumors of his secret allegiance to a Tzeenchite secret society true, or mere bourgeois propaganda?
Exacerbating these divisions is the constant threat from Khaos. Up in the "Black North" and their allied territories on the great steppes on the other side of the pole, the forces of evil pervert the laws of science to their mad push for world domination. Khornate breeder-lords select from an unceasing flow of gladiators to produce the perfect warriors; Nurglite bio-priests carefully engineer the next insidious plague to slip past the Imperial Plasmic Survey; Slaaneshi sin-merchants mobilize a world-wide network of Cathayan black tar and warpdust powder (bartered from the Skaven) to corrupt the Empire from within; and Tzeenchite techno-mancers design ever more fiendish mutated F.R.E.A.K.S and the twisted Biomechs.
Inside the Empire, things are scarcely better. Even with the darkness of the forests pushed back to the periphery and the Greenskin hordes banished to the far side of the World's Edge Mountains, the threat of Were-beastmanism and other, more insidious, forces winds its way into every neighborhood in the Empire despite the best efforts of the Imperial Plasmic Survey and the Schwarzmänner. Mutants who cannot conceal their true nature – known as the "Untervolk" - have decamped into the subway tunnels and sewers that form the Undercities of the Empire, waging an unceasing war for survival against “norms” and “ratfolk” alike. From the back alleyways and the salons of the nobility alike, the endless secret societies of Khaos vie to do their masters' bidding, undermining the Empire from within in preparation for the coming war.
It is a time that desperately needs heroes, men and women willing to brave the darkness on the mean streets and the shell-torn battlefields of the Old World alike. Mystery and intrigue, adventure and mad science await!

So in the same way I gifted my good friend LG Shala with a cover to his fanfiction for Christmas, I gifted my good friend @waystobuild-blog with a Lyokosona-edit of Dr. Franz Hopper!
*factory theme intensifies*
Ways does this awesome series where he translates the cast of Code Lyoko into the Persona style (specifically P3 Reload, I believe) by editing and mixing elements of its character renders together. I enjoyed the series so much, and actually got to help him in the past with his edit of Jeremie, so I was happy to make him this as a surprise.
This was a lot of fun to make, same as the cover to A Trip to Remember.
If you're impressed by this and want an edit of your own, or even a full-scale art piece, remember that commissions are currently open and my DMs are free to all.

just finished the human fear. screams in retired 2017/18 franzdom. ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
my own amateur "review" below
audacious - dislike. gave me an awful first impression, to the point at which i didn't listen to any of the other singles until just now. lyrics are like, performatively self-aware in an offputting way and the composition is bland af. also just feels like a weird attempt at trying to redo early franz without the inherent cynicism which just. functionally is impossible to do well i think
2. everydaydreamer - this one i liked pretty well, both lyrically and compositionally. this feels like a good balance between pre- and post-nick ff sound imo. it reminds me thematically of The Universe Expanded and Dream Again and feels like the healthiest nick-grieving song he's ever put out. which is unfortunate bc that was very nearly an entire decade ago but oh well. still good tho
3. the doctor - this is the first of a few songs on this album that i feel like would sound fine if any other band did it but feels weirdly attention-reaching since it's them. SPEAKING OF ATTENTION I DONT LIKE THE LYRICS AT ALL. This is definitely the most grossly self-aware/acknowledging song imo. don't like it
4. hooked - i could name half a dozen songs by other artists in my library compositionally similar to this one. i like the style but it sounds, again, weird coming from them. lyrically though i think it's pretty dull and the chorus.... eughhh. alex is too old to make it feel like anything other than an awkward "back in my day magazines called me a sex symbol" ordeal.
5. build it up - HAAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA the funny thing about this song is that they've been playing it for so long that it only just now being officially released just. REALLY emphasizes the fact that alex will never get over nick leaving even more LOL. Good song though, not my fav stylistically but fine
6. night or day - this must be my favorite single but that's not really saying much lol. it's fine. doesn't sound tooooo totally derivative of older stuff which helps.
7. tell me i should stay - Ok I LOVE this one. The piano interlude is v nice. The style and chord progression is also v nice. Alex's voice sounds the best it has in years (imo). the chorus key change really sets this one apart from the others and it feels WAYYYY more exciting and natural than the one in audacious. I love the guitar riffing and the tempo changes. This is EASILY my favorite off the album and honestly will probably rank in the upper quarter of their songs overall for me. If they go and make a whole album like this i will forgive alex for his transgressions against humanity
8. cats - this is another one that feels like a good balance of older and newer ff sound. i really like the "take it outside" refrain compositionally and am a bit of a sucker for the vocal style he takes on the second verse LOL. lyrically i think it is Interesting, especially the switch between "you" and "we" pronouns. i will likely be analyzing this one in the future heheheh.
9. black eyelashes - sorry not sorry but the folk-ish style reminds me of das lunsentrio. also the usage of greek words is interesting. apparently the bridge translates to "you are not greek/no, you're not talking/why? why aren't you talking?" Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. hmm,,,,, hm. Interesting. overall this one is pretty fun tho i like it lol
10. bar lonely - this one feels a little compositionally derivative of their early stuff imo but not to an extent that i feel ruins it. the lyrics kinda remind me of YCHISMB b-side era stuff, especially the vague progression of the curtain metaphor (i guess it reminds me of uh. that one supposedly about his grandpa idr what it's called lol). it is ok imo.
11. the birds - OK I LIKE THIS ONE A LOT. I love the style of it. I love the chaos that abruptly realigns into the almost factory-like riff structure. the lyrics are fine and i would like them better if they didn't end with "thank you for accepting me" but it's the composition that sells this one for me. Kinda weird for a closer tho tbh
I am glad I can say that this album exceeded my expectations and didn't end up being nearly as compositionally derivative of franz 1.0 stuff or as agonizingly self-appraising and emotionally deflective as I thought it would be after hearing the lead single. Most of the first half gives me this impression of "very adamantly trying to paint a certain image" that feels kinda gross but beyond that there is definitely a good amount of artistry and I personally find it to be much more open-minded and creative than AA ever was. it's clear that AK has grown over the years and honestly i'm surprised (for better or worse) to see there really aren't any obvious digs at any of the former members given past patterns. But i'm very glad that's the case lol. I hope they can continue to ride this wave as a group bc there's definitely a lot of good potential for some really fantastic works of art within its current form.
#franz ferdinand#sighhhh. i really did worry for a while there that this album would suck hahahaha#things i can only say as a post-franzdom member lol#also i kinda feel proud of alex for not totally cursing out nick and/or paul here LOL. wasn't sure if it could happen after the htth single#it's so interesting how deeply integrated the former lineup of this band is even as the years of separation go on#like as much as we make fun of him about it. alex was truly hurt when they left. nick is v much still a part of him#i think paul leaving probably put things into a greater perspective bc he could no longer think of it as '1v3(+2)' or whatever#perhaps i will post more if i end up doing further contemplation on the matter. i do enjoy this album though
