i am extremely bored so i was going to make a list of my Top 10 Favorite Albums of All Time and that proved to be too difficult, so i narrowed it down to five
5. rumours by fleetwood mac - it was between this and Tango in the Night. ultimately the reason i went with Rumours is because of the fact that they managed to make something so beautiful together while hardly speaking and being in the absolute depths of despair. there is so much visceral emotion in this album. “if you don’t love me now, you will never love me again.” and also, just the fact that my favorite Fleetwood Mac song, Silver Springs, was written for this album - even if it didn’t make it on. the story behind it just sums up the whole album to me.
4. fanmail by TLC - so i’m old and grew up in a wonderful era of woman-fronted r&b which has continually influenced my music taste over the years - and TLC were my idols when i was little. i listen to a lot of music from my youth but i feel like Fanmail just aged to absolute perfection and is very special. my favorite song from it is Unpretty.
3. channel orange by frank ocean - i probably have not listened to any album on earth has much as i have listened to this one. the intensity and the variety in genre and style... from the agonizing ballad-like despair of Bad Religion to the super high concept Pyramids. this album has given me so much. it has kept me company through so many writing projects. my gratitude is endless. favorite songs are Super Rich Kids and Bad Religion.
2. ctrl by SZA - i am fucking obsessed with this album. it is so good. it is so smooth. it’s a concept album. it’s so raw and vulnerable. she tells everything and spares no detail. i feel like this is one of the few perfect, no skip albums. she went into this with such purpose and created this amazing, heartbreaking album about insecurity and loneliness and change and bad habits and growing up and vulnerability and of course... control. this is a true modern classic. SZA is peerless. favorite song is Prom.
1. the dreaming by Kate Bush - it was kind of hard to pick an album by Kate Bush, but the reason why i ultimately went with the dreaming is because of the high concept, ambitious nature of it. Kate Bush doesn’t often write autobiographical songs but this album really takes it to the max because the stories behind the songs are so vivid and intense. harry houdini’s wife trying to speak to his ghost at a seance... an unhinged album closer inspired by The Shining by Stephen King... she really did that. i truly feel this album is so unique even among Kate Bush’s own discography. it’s hard to pick a favorite song. maybe it’s Night of the Swallow, but i feel it changes every time i listen.
