February 17, 1945, Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Owen Francis Patrick Hammerberg gives his life saving two fellow U.S. Navy divers trapped during salvage operations at Pearl Harbor's West Loch. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. In 1954, USS Hammerberg (DE-1015) is named in his honor.
