Plastic Makeup
When I was very young, I used to like to take my mother’s makeup and use it to paint my toys, walls, books, etc. I think I enjoyed putting it on everything except my actual face. This model is a representation of the pretend makeup that my mother bought for me so that I would stop stealing hers. What I recall most about my cosmetic set was that the pieces came in pastel shades and were entirely made of plastic. None of the pieces were actually functional however, so you couldn’t apply any of the dreamy pigmentation onto your face (or other desired surfaces). I chose to recreate these particular items because they are somehow forever ingrained in my childhood memory even though I don’t think I was particularly interested in them. Makeup is often associated with superficiality and deception, and I find it interesting how the plastic makeup set takes that concept to another level. The makeup pieces have no real purpose and only resemble cosmetics on the surface. They are pretty and fun to look at.
