Injuries, Job Security, and How MotoGP and Indycar Differ...Or Don't.
In the last two years, two racers I support have been seriously injured. One was Enea Bastianini, rider of the #23 Ducati in MotoGP, and the other was David Malukas, who never actually got to drive the #6 NTT Data Arrow McLaren-Chevrolet Indycar.
So, just to go over what happened to them: Enea Bastianini was injured in the opening sprint race of the 2023 MotoGP season, the Portuguese GP at Portimao. Luca Marini went up his inside into turn five (Torre VIP), lost it, and his bike slid into Enea's bike. Enea broke his collarbone in this crash, wound up missing the opening five races, came back, injured himself again at Catalunya, and missed another three races.
Enea would return for the Indonesian Grand Prix and would then win the Malaysian Grand Prix towards the end of the season. That win, combined with Jorge Martin on the Pramac Ducati failing to beat Francesco Bagnaia for the championship, secured Enea's seat for 2024.
So, while Enea was enjoying a secure offseason, David Malukas was preparing for his switch from Dale Coyne Racing to a frontrunning team in the form of Arrow McLaren...except, he never actually made his debut for the team.
David Malukas was mountain biking in California, riding an easy trail, when, trying to slow himself, pulled the front brake too hard, went up and over the handlebars, and landed on his hands. He would break his left wrist and it was announced he would miss St. Pete and probably Thermal.
St. Pete and probably Thermal soon became St. Pete and definitely Thermal, missing those two races. Callum Ilott would fill in.
Malukas missed Long Beach next, with Theo Pourchaire in the car now.
Then Theo Pourchaire raced Long Beach as well.
Around this time, various rumors started flying about Malukas getting replaced. This only grew as Nathan Brown reported that Malukas had traveled to Panama in order to receive stem cell shots to speed up his recovery, and only then did he get the pins in his wrist removed.
Then, after Barber - the fourth race of the season, Malukas blacked out his twitter page. I was sat in a discord debating what exactly this meant with some other Indycar fans, with news picking up that he had been dropped. With the story pretty much out there, Arrow McLaren made the announcement early in the morning, David Malukas had been released after failing to meet his contractual obligations.
By now, it's been announced that Ilott will do the Indy 500, and then Theo Pourchaire will fill out the rest of the season in the #6. The Malukas at McLaren story ended before it could even begin.
Meanwhile, in MotoGPland, Enea Bastianini continued with the factory Ducati team. However, with Jorge Martin now building up an annoyingly large championship lead and Marc Marquez on the Ducati stealing all the attention, the whole world seems to think it's between the two of them to get the Ducati factory seat for 2025.
For the record, Enea is tied on points with Marquez, just two behind his teammate, and spent this weekend's race - the French Grand Prix at the Le Mans Bugatti Circuit - starting tenth, getting a penalty, recovering to fourth, setting fastest lap, and finishing just 2.2 seconds off the lead.
Enea is an immense talent, he's the rider I chose to support when I decided to become a MotoGP fan ahead of the 2023 season, and it's so rotten to see his career falling apart because of factors outside of his control.
As for Malukas, he's a young, popular kid and has proven so talented on the ovals in a Dale Coyne Racing car. I was so eager to see what he could do with an Arrow McLaren, particularly at tracks like Iowa, Gateway, and Nashville which seemed like they'd suit him. Now, we're not going to get the chance, and it's unclear where he might land if he were to try and return to Indycar.
So, in theory, MotoGP gives more time to injured racers, but no matter what series you're in, motorsports can be a cutthroat business. Bastianini and Malukas certainly aren't the first racers to lose top rides after an injury, and they certainly won't be the last. It's not exactly an industry known for job security.
If I could manifest a happy resolution to both, I'd have Enea Bastianini go to factory Aprilia to join Maverick VInales, while David Malukas could join Meyer Shank Racing (perhaps with Tom Blomqvist returning to IMSA with the same team) to reinforce their oval program the same way Felix Rosenqvist has revitalized that team on the road and street circuits.
For now though, we wait to see what happens to them.
To end on a happier note, Brad Keselowski won the Darlington Goodyear 400 NASCAR race last night running a throwback scheme in honor of the TOM's Castrol Supra. That is an awesome motorsports word randomizer and the fact that it's real is why NASCAR is really cool in 2024.
One day I'll write a blogpost where talking about current NASCAR is actually the point instead of just spending the final paragraph gushing about last weekend's cool race.

There's a party where you MotoGP/2/3, WSBK/WSSP/300, F1/2/3, FE drivers/riders or whatever are invited, but there's a catch. They need to be dressed up as something that starts as their first letter of their name/surname or popular nickname. It can be in any language you know. It can be as general as Celestino going in blue jeans and a blue sweater with his face painted in blue with black dots, as he is going as 'cielo' sky in Italian. It can also be specific as Celestino as Captain America.
So who is going to the party, and what are they wearing?
oooh an interesting question I love this very much, ty!
first of all i’ve been dying to talk about this for a hot minute so Joan Mir is there in a hot catsuit because ”mirri” in finnish means a cat. and he’d look very good in that i’d reckon.
now with one repsol honda rider we can’t miss his teammate, Marc, who obviously went for the costume route with ”Pedro Marquez” aka spiderman, a very fitting costume
the ”couple’s costume” goes for Fabio and Tom. they teamed up to for ”Tom of Finland” look with Tom dressing up in period clothing as ”Tom” Touko Laaksonen, the famous finnish artist, and Fabio in a hypermasculine leather getup reminiscent of Tom’s drawings straight from finland. it’s all very gay.
Lewis Hamilton is once again the most stylish person at the party, dressed up in his namesake Louis Vuitton’s clothing. I’d imagine it’s a loose look with interesting patterns and a pair of sunnies to go with it.
Valentino Rossi took the costume party also literally, as he is naturally going for a doctor costume. i wanna say they are doing a couple’s costume with Francesca, going as derek and meredith from grey’s anatomy (maybe the doctor’s jacket is named ”mcdreamy”)
his prodigee, Celestino Vietti is also there in a more of an interprative look, as ”vietti” means drive or libido in finnish, and he decided to dress like the god of love and seduction, Eros, with baby wings and a halo added.
Francesco ”Pecco” Bagnaia and Marco Bezzecchi went for a couples costume as well, going for a version of the classic finnish song ”Päivänsäde ja Menninkäinen” (Sunray and Hobgoblin). Pecco is wearing all fluffy yellow and light fabrics as the ray of sunshine, and Marco contrasts him with a darker, earthier look as the goblin.
Luca Marini matched his eyes with his outfit full of wavy blues like the sea, mare. he wore a simple coloured jeans and jacket - look that had all kinds of blues painted on.
at first glance, it looks like Charles Leclerc has just worn his ferrari suit to the party. upon closer inspection, it comes apparent that the number is 95 and those are not shell logos but rust-eze, and he has actually dressed up as Lightning McQueen.
Alex Albon loves to dye his hair so naturally he went as the redhead Archie Andrews, in a comic book style with the letterman jacket with R and all.
Lando Norris is clearly dressed like Lando Calrissian.
Max Verstappen went for a roman emperor look like Magnus Maximus, toga and all.
and who can forget Oscar Piastri, who went for a full-body golden look as an oscar statue. all the paint took weeks to come off.
Jonathan Rea shows up to the party dressed in discount tags because ”rea” in swedish means for sale. he keeps flirting with his wife, saying he’s going cheap today.
Jack Doohan took the safe route and borrowed an old race suit from his dad, because hey, there’s a famous racer named Mick Doohan out there right?
whereas the other famous mick, Mick Schumacher, took his surname literally and dressed as an old-timey cobbler or a ”shoe maker”.
i’d imagine there’s a funny moment when Casey Stoner shows up very stoned to the party.
#here were a few i could think of off the top of my head#surely not everyone but a few#a lot of them are far fetched but i had fun#ask tag#eve.txt

May I request a fluffy first date fic with Francesco Bagnaia? (hopefully I spelled that right). Thank you!
Perfect Date with the Perfect Man
Author's Note: You spelled it beautifully, and this man is absolute perfection. He is too pure for this world. Enjoy, love! ❤️❤️
Picking out a red dress from your closet, you knew it was just the perfect amount of revealing and the perfect amount of classy for your first date with Francesco.
You'd first met him on the track when you got a VIP pass for the paddock and pit lane tour. You were able to get a picture with him, and while everyone else was working their way down the pit lane to see the other bikes and riders, he actually started making small talk with you. You thought it was just that he wanted to talk, but you quickly figured out that he had an interest in you when he asked you how long you were going to be staying in town for the race. You told him that you lived in Italy. And ironically enough, you currently lived where he was from - Turin. He told you that he wanted to take you out when he came back for summer break in about a month. He gave you his number, and you both hit it off fairly quickly. You texted just about everyday, video chatted together when he had time in his busy schedule, and of course phone calls. It weirdly felt like you'd known each other for years instead of just a couple months.
You picked out a pair of black stilettos to wear and had your hair down to cascade down your shoulders and upper back. The thing that interested you about this date was that, per Francesco's request, you were told to make sure and bring some comfortable clothes to change into after dinner. You'd asked him so many times where he was taking you afterwards, but he would always joke with you and say that you couldn't pay him enough money to tell you where he was taking you.
Finishing getting dressed and putting the final touches on your lipstick, you heard a knock on your front door. Opening it after checking through your peephole, you smiled when you saw Francesco dressed to the nines in a suit, tie, and his wonderful curly hair on display. You imagined that this is what taking a male model out of a catalog looked like because he looked amazing.
"Hi Pecco." you smiled, watching a blush dust his cheeks at you calling him that nickname. He made a mental note of how lovely that sounded rolling of your red lips.
"Hi there. You... Look incredible. I love this dress." he smiled back, bringing you in for a hug before pressing kisses to both of your cheeks and checking you out in your dress.
"Thank you! I have to say, you clean up pretty well too. I feel underdressed..." you joked, his laugh echoing through your ears.
"Oh stop it. You look amazing." he smiled, wrapping his arm around your waist while he walked you to his car.
"So since I can't drag out of you where you're taking me after dinner, do I at least get to know where you're taking me to dinner?" you cheekily raised an eyebrow at him and he chuckled as he drove. Glancing his eyes over at you, he spoke in his smooth Italian accent that you'd come to love in the past few months.
"Good things come to those who wait, my darling." you just smiled to yourself and giggled at him.
You finally arrived at the restaurant and were in absolute amazement at the location he'd chosen. There was valet parking, and a huge archway above the restaurant. It was right at sunset when you'd arrived, and Pecco had reserved a patio seat with a perfect view of the mountains on the horizon.
"Oh wow... It is so beautiful out here!" you gasped at the red, orange, purple, and blue hues to the sky in front of you. As you went to sit at the table, Pecco pulled your chair out for you and helped you slide closer to the table.
"Such a gentleman..." you glanced up at him, throwing him a flirty look as he sat in front of you and smiled.
"I like to think I'm a gentleman." he flirted back, ordering some wine for you both. Skimming over the menu, you both decided fairly quickly what you wanted and put your order in with the waiter. Handing the menus over to the waiter, Pecco rested his head in his hands as he admired the way that the sun accentuated your features. He thought that your eyes were the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen in his life.
"What?" you giggled, taking a sip of your wine and looking at him. He shook his head softly.
"You just look amazing. I can't keep my eyes off of you." he flirted, reaching across the table to grab your hand and kiss it gently. Rubbing his thumb on your hand, he looked out at the sunset with you as you both waited for your food.
"So I'm curious. What got you into MotoGP?" he asked, tilting his head in curiosity at you.
"My whole family is actually into it! My parents used to take me to races when I was little, and I always loved the rush of feeling the vibrations of the bikes as the raced by us in the grandstands. It's always just been a hobby of mine to attend the races when I can."
"Oh really? That's cool!" he said, eyes glistening in the ambient lighting outside as it got darker.
"Now I'm curious. What made you pull me to the side at that pit lane tour?" you cocked an eyebrow at him, anxious to hear his answer. He cracked that toothy smile that you had always loved in pictures of him and looked in his lap shyly.
"If I'm being honest, I liked that you weren't one of those typical fangirls who freaked out when they see us down there in the pits. I liked that you were calm and able to carry on a genuine conversation. That intrigued me." you blushed at his honesty.
Just as he finished talking, you both got your plates of food.
"Ooo that looks amazing." you said, eyeing his plate from across the table.
"Please, have some." he said, sliding his plate closer to you to let you take some food from it.
"Ugh... You clean up good AND you offer me food off your plate? My god you're like the perfect man." you chuckled, taking some steak from his plate and sighing at the taste of it.
"Ah, but now I get something from your plate. Fair trade." he stole a piece of pasta from your plate and laughed at your shocked expression.
"You little sneak!" you nudged his leg under the table as you both giggled like teenage kids.
The rest of the dinner went great. Talking with Francesco felt like talking to your best friend since high school. He was so easy to get along with and very easy to have a conversation with. From an outsider looking in, anyone would've thought that you and Pecco had known each other since you were kids. The way that he looked at you was like a man that had just found his treasure. And the way that you looked at him was like a woman who'd found her future husband.
"Okay, before we leave, here comes the very unconventional part." Pecco said, signing the check and giving it to the waiter. "We're going to both go to the restroom and change into our casual clothes. Because where we're going next, we definitely can't be wearing these outfits." he smiled, pulling out your chair for you and walking out to the car with you to grab your change of clothes. Going back into the restaurant, you both went into the restroom to change your clothes. In all your years, you had to say that this was the first time you'd ever had a first date like this.
"Pecco what is happening, oh my goodness!" you threw your head back and laughed as you both walked out of the bathrooms. Here you both were, walking through this 5 star restaurant in shorts and t-shirts. You felt like a giddy high school girl again as Pecco took your hand and ran with you through the restaurant and back out to his car.
"I have to say, this is probably the most fun I've had on a date in a long time." you smiled over at him from your spot next to him in the car. He kept his eyes on the road, but wore a toothy grin on his face at your compliment.
The entire drive, you were still wondering where he was taking you. He had rolled the windows down so you could both enjoy the day cooling off from the summer. You were too busy letting your hand float in the wind to notice him stealing glances at you, but he was taking every chance he could to memorize your hair flowing in the wind, the way your eyes wandered along the road as cars buzzed past, and the way your smile made his heart skip a beat. Suddenly, you felt the temperature noticeable drop, and you realized that you were near a river. Turning your head to him, you smiled and held in a giggle.
"You're taking me to Dora Riparia?"
"Bingo..." he smirked over at you, finding a spot to parallel park in. Opening your door for you, he took your hand in his and walked you both down to the edge of the river.
"I love this river. I come here every time I need to clear my head because it is just so peaceful." he said softly, staring at the city lights glistening off of the water.
"This is beautiful, Pecco." you looked over at him and smiled, lacing your fingers further with his. You loved how his hand engulfed yours, yet it was so gentle. "I can't believe that I'm here with you right now. This feels like a dream." you said in disbelief, taking in your surroundings and the feeling of his presence next to you. You did not want this night to end, and neither did he.
"I will happily be your dream." he said, nothing but soul in his voice as he began walking along the riverbank with you.
"Yeah? I'm liking that idea right about now." you tucked a stray piece of hair behind your ear and smiled shyly to yourself.
"Hey, why don't we sit and stargaze for a little bit?" he suggested, stopping to sit on the ground and you followed shortly after him.
"Oh wow! Look at how beautiful." you gasped, looking up and seeing all of the stars watching you both lay on the ground.
"Do you know any constellations?" he asked, holding your hand with his as he put his other behind his head to gaze upward with you.
"I do! That's Taurus right there. See, you can see the horns there, and then the nose right below it." you said, pointing to your left and watching his eyes follow you.
"Ahhh okay. That's amazing! Can you find my birth constellation?" he challenged, testing you to see how much you knew about him.
"January 14th... So you're Capricorn, right?"
"Yes. Your fangirl is coming out." he poked fun at you, but he knew that you didn't mean anything by it. Birthdays were a pretty easy thing to come by, especially nowadays with Google...
"It just so happens, Capricornus should be visible around this time of year. Typically late summer, early fall is when you can see it." you said, looking around with an eagle eye to try and find it.
"Ah! There it is. It looks like a big triangle, see?" you pointed to all of the stars in the constellation and he was amazed by the fact that you knew what all of these meant.
"That is really incredible that you know where to look for that. Do you like astronomy?" he asked, turning his head to look at you.
"Yeah I do. It's so peaceful to just watch the stars and see them twinkle back at you. It always reminds me that we are so small. In this sky filled with trillions of stars, we are just so miniscule compared to it all. It's very humbling to think about that."
"Oh look! A shooting star." you gasped, watching the star shoot across the sky.
"Make a wish." you giggled.
"I wish that I could kiss you right now." he said just above a whisper, his gaze never leaving your face once while you were talking.
"Hey, you can't say it out loud or it won't come tr- wait what?" It took you a moment to realize what he said.
"My wish is coming true right now." he said, sitting up on his elbow to hover his face over yours. Smiling at you, his eyes dropped from yours down to your lips and his hand sat right at the junction of your shoulder and your neck. He lowered his head and closed the gap between you two, placing a gentle kiss on your lips. Your fingers came to rest at the back of his neck as your heartrate was through the roof right now. This had to be a dream... You were not sitting next to a river in Italy kissing your crush right now... Just that thought alone was enough to make you smile into the kiss. He pulled away and smiled with you.
"What?" he chuckled, rubbing his thumb on your cheek. You shook your head and giggled.
"All my life, I have had the worst luck with relationships. And now this? This has to be a dream." you sighed, running your fingers through his hair.
"I promise it's not. I'm real, see?" he said, taking your hand from his hair and kissing your palm. "And I really like you."
"I really like you too." you reached up to kiss him again and he chuckled into the kiss at your excitement.
"This has seriously been the most perfect first date." you said after you pulled away from the kiss.
"Glad to see I still got it..." he laughed when you nudged his shoulder.
"I want you to come to the next race with me." he blurted out, sitting up with you now to watch the water flow again.
"Are tickets on sale yet? I thought they didn't go on sale for like another month." you picked at the grass beneath your fingers.
"See, that's the perk of dating one of the riders. You get all the access to anything you want." he smirked over at you.
"Oh, so now we're dating now, huh? I wasn't aware of that." you chuckled, giving him a hard time.
"Well now you are. You are my girlfriend, and I am your lovable boyfriend who is giving you an all access pass to anything to do with MotoGP." he laughed, pulling you in for another quick peck on the lips.
"I think I could get used to that perk." you bit your lip and giggled at him.
Needless to say, him pulling you aside at that pit lane tour was the best thing to ever happen to both of you.

MotoGP Jerez 2017 Results
Repsol Honda #2 Dani Pedrosa, looking like the 2012 version of himself, won today’s Spanish Grand Prix, leading wire to wire for his first win since Misano last year. Teammate and defending champion Marc Marquez gave chase for most of the race, but never seemed to have quite enough to mount a serious challenge to Pedrosa on one of those days… Underdog Jorge Lorenzo claimed third step on the podium in a credible performance on the factory Ducati, his first podium in red which, he said afterwards, felt like a win. When the smoke cleared, the 2017 race had tightened considerably, to the delight of the majority of fans, especially those expensively dressed. Embed from Getty Images We’ve seen these three Spaniards on top of podiums together may times before, so it comes as a bit of a surprise to that Dani Pedrosa, Marc Marquez and Jorge Lorenzo have not shared a podium together since the final race of the 2015 season.
Practice
Practice sessions at Jerez varied from wet to damp to dry, and the timesheets were informative: FP1: Wet. Repsol Honda veteran Dani Pedrosa, Brit Cal Crutchlow, and Australia’s Jack Miller. All Hondas. FP2: Damp/drying. Pedrosa, Miller and Crutchlow. Hmmm. FP3: Dry. Pedrosa, Lorenzo and Maverick Vinales. Hmmm again. Clearly Pedrosa has it going on this weekend. Race day to be dry. Seems to be pretty Honda-friendly. Who goes through to QP2: Four Hondas and four Yamahas (Vinales 4th, Valentino Rossi 7th late), Andrea Iannone on the Suzuki, and Lorenzo the top Ducati in 8th. Jerez is not a Ducati-friendly track, to say the least. Q1: Iannone and Aleix Espargaro’s Aprilia advance; Petrucci and Dovizioso do not, but then comes the factory KTM team of Bradley Smith and Pol Espargaro, putting both on the fifth row for what I guess to be the first time. I’m starting to develop a little motowood about this KTM bunch. Embed from Getty Images KTM continues to make progress, even if the race results aren’t there yet. Pol Espargaro was fifth in Q1, just ahead of teammate Bradley Smith. Q2: The Usual Suspects, joined once again by Dani Pedrosa, dominate. Pedrosa, teammate Marquez and Crutchlow oust newest wunderkind Vinales from the front row. Three Hondas and two compatriotas on Row 1! Southern Spain is dancing in the streets. It’s a big deal over there. As dusk falls on Saturday, it looks like one of the Hondas is going to stand on the top step. Yet, Rossi shows up on Sundays, as does Vinales. Crutchlow and Lorenzo are lurking. Worth a ticket if you’re in the neighborhood on Sunday.
Undercard: Moto2 Procession
Embed from Getty Images Alex Marquez won his first career Moto2 race, putting an end to Franco Morbidelli’s winning streak. Moto2 Estrella Galicia heartthrob and series leader Franco Morbidelli crashed out of the lead unassisted, allowing young Alex Marquez to break his Moto2 cherry, winning easily for the first time since his Moto3 championship in 2014. Afterwards, he was congratulated by big brother Marc in Parc Ferme, in a moment none of us ever forget, of which older brother must have surely reminded him.
The Race Itself
Embed from Getty Images Johann Zarco continues to impress, starting strong in Jerez before finishing just off the podium in fourth. In the early action, Pedrosa took the hole shot from pole followed closely by Marquez. Johann Zarco, the precocious rookie on the Tech 3 Yamaha, proceeded to trade paint with Rossi on Lap 1 before going through on him. We watched Lap 2 in some amazement as he then proceeded to reel in Vinales, Crutchlow and Iannone, taking over third place behind the Repsol Hondas. Say what you will about the French, this Zarco has onions. Especially with a full tank. By Lap 4 Lorenzo was running seventh and Rossi eighth, giving the crowd a brief flashback to 2009 and 2010 when the two of them used to duel regularly for Yamaha. Lap 5 saw the impudent Zarco go through on Marquez into second place and Miller get taken down by the spatially unaware Alvaro Bautista, leading to the swing/slap thing from Miller. On Lap 6 Crutchlow fell out of fourth place and Pol Espargaro grounded his KTM machine, while Lap 7 gave us more Lorenzo vs. Rossi. During all of this, the Repsol Hondas were beginning to disappear, after Marquez had taken second back from Zarco. Embed from Getty Images Jack Miller was understandably displeased after being taking out by Alvaro Bautista. Miller later gave Bautista a shove for which he received a 1000 euro fine. On Lap 10, team Marc VDS Racing’s day was completely ruined when Tito Rabat crashed out, joining Bautista in the Zero Points Club. Moments later, Iannone slid his Suzuki into the gravel. Lorenzo was suddenly dogging Zarco for third place, and Dovizioso went through on Rossi, who was definitely having tire issues. There was some jousting further down the order that you’ll need to watch on video to understand fully. Rookie Jonas Folger, on the second Tech 3 Yamaha, had the temerity to go through on legend Rossi on Lap 22 while Rossi’s tires continued to disintegrate beneath him. Lorenzo finally broke Zarco around Lap 23 for his first Ducati podium. Plenty of exhaling taking place at Ducati Corse over that one. Embed from Getty Images Former teammates Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi battled it out with Lorenzo coming out ahead. Coincidentally, it took both riders four races after switching from Yamaha to Ducati to score their first podiums on a Desmosedici. Dani Pedrosa, climbing back into Tranche 1, and Jorge Lorenzo, advancing to Tranche 3, still have some go in their tanks. That Lorenzo could do well at Jerez on the Ducati says much about him and the GP17, that they appear to be nearing a rapprochement that will allow Lorenzo, as well as Dovizioso, to compete for the podium most every time out. Danilo Petrucci, with a solid seventh place finish on the Pramac Ducati GP17, moves up to T2. Here’s the rest, including a look-back at the previous rankings: Bruce’s Rankings After Round 3 Tranche 1: Vinales, Marquez, Rossi Tranche 2: Pedrosa, Crutchlow, Dovizioso, Zarco, Miller Tranche 3: Bautista, Iannone, Petrucci, Baz, Redding, Folger Tranche 4: A. Espargaro, P Espargaro, Barbera, Lorenzo , (Rins) Tranche 5: Smith, Lowes, Rabat, Abraham New Rankings after Round 4 Tranche 1: Vinales, Marquez, Rossi, Pedrosa ↑ Tranche 2: Crutchlow, Dovizioso, Zarco, Petrucci ↑ Tranche 3: Lorenzo ↑, Folger, A Espargaro ↑, Miller ↓, Iannone, Redding Tranche 4: Bautista ↓, P Espargaro, Barbera, Baz Tranche 5: Smith, Lowes, Rabat, Abraham, (Rins) Social climbers: Pedrosa, Petrucci, Lorenzo, and Aleix Espargaro. Lorenzo’s podium very impressive; he looked in command of the GP17. Aleix Espargaro has the Aprilia competitive. Embed from Getty Images A much-needed third-place result takes some of the pressure off of Jorge Lorenzo. The podium puts Lorenzo into the top 10 in the championship standings for the first time this season. Pedrosa now owns a new record for consecutive seasons with at least one grand prix win at 16. He won it during the 3000th Grand Prix race of the modern era. Worthy of respect, more titanium in him than most golf clubs and forearms like cables: Little Big Man is what I used to call him, and I still like it. Embed from Getty Images The last time Dani Pedrosa went a whole season without a win was 2001, his rookie season in the 125cc class. Losing Face: Miller and Bautista. Miller, in part, for such a prissy swing he took at Bautista. I don’t care that it was Bautista’s fault. But either swing like you mean it or don’t swing. Crutchlow is flirting with T3. Rossi is flirting with T2 and hasn’t won since Mugello last year. Tire issues today not his fault, but rider’s choice nonetheless.
So Moto2 and MotoGP are Modeling One Another
…as the following comparison clearly shows. Focus groups have informed Dorna that fans prefer it if an old crafty veteran challenges a young buck for the top spot. They don’t want either rider to get away. And the more riders challenging for the title the better. Four and five would be optimal. Embed from Getty Images Franco Morbidelli crashed out at Jerez but he remains on top of the Moto2 standings. Statistically, the most attractive cross-class matchups for this season appear thus as of May 7, 2017: Moto2 MotoGP Franco Morbidelli Marc Marquez Tom Luthi Valentino Rossi Miguel Oliveira Maverick Vinales Alex Marquez Jorge Lorenzo Judging from Sunday’s performances, things are about where the suits want them.
The Big Picture Heading to Le Mans
In the premier class, the top four is as tight as Tupperware: Rossi 62 Vinales 60 Marquez 58 Pedrosa 52 This is sweet. This is what fans want, heading into Round 5. The tranching and the standings stand up, I feel, to one another. Some riders have positive momentum, while others are struggling. The Tech 3 Yamaha guys are strong every time out and not intimidated by future hall of famers. Each of the top four is fully aware of the chestnut that in order to finish first, one must first finish. Embed from Getty Images Despite finishing well back in 10th, Valentino Rossi remains on top of the championship standings. Over at Moto2, Morbidelli now leads Luthi by a manageable 11 points, with Oliveira another 15 points back. Alex Marquez and 20-year-old Italian wonder Francesco Bagnaia (second today after successfully fighting off an extended challenge from Mattia Passini) make up the top five. Six riders took the checkered flag within the first ten seconds at Jerez. One of the things Le Mans is known for is sketchy weather. If, as is not uncommon, conditions are less than ideal in northern France two weeks hence, we could see how the top four MotoGP riders perform in the wet, the cold, or both. This could be revealing about those riders with aspirations to top five finishes for the season. Riders like Miller and Petrucci enjoy the rain, while other riders don’t. Wet weather could further tighten the race at the top of both classes. For the focus groups and the suits at Dorna it doesn’t get any better. 2017 MotoGP Spanish Grand Prix Race Results Pos.
