THE FIELD (1990) Grade: B-
Thought it really picked in the middle. The story got passionate and the ending was not the happy ending I expected. Seeing a man go mad over land is a topic that any generation could relate to. It tugs perfectly on real human / family emotions. The acting was also good.

Freddie won his poll comfortably beating Sting, which between you, me and Melina is a victory for someone often criticised as a pretentious wanker over a real actual pretentious wanker

Every Breath You Take - The Police (1983)
“Every Breath You Take” is, to this day, still perceived to be a love song. However, the lyrics are actually spoken from a character with sinister intent. During the time Sting wrote this song, he had just divorced his first wife, Frances Tomelty. While his intention may have been to write a sweet, emotional love song from the beginning, he was soon realizing that he was entering into a dark place that fought for control and surveillance. Being in the midst of the Cold War, at that time, did not help the situation.
Musically, the track features a minimal arrangement. Sting’s bass, Stewart Copeland’s drums, and Andy Summers‘ guitar round out the basic tracks with added synths, piano, and recording effects to boost the production. This was at a time where the band were having conflicts on a regular basis which almost caused producer Hugh Padgham to quit and the recording to cease.
Regardless of the turmoil during the recording, “Every Breath You Take” was a worldwide success. The music video, directed by Godley & Creme, even won the band the first Best Cinematography award at the 1983 MTV Video Music Awards. The song also stands as the signature song of The Police and has been played more than 9 million times on radio.
It was also:
The best-selling single of 1983, and the fifth best-selling single of the 1980’s in the United States
Winner of the 1984 Best Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals Grammy awards
#84 on the Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time
It topped the Billboard Top 100 for 8 weeks and the UK singles chart for 4 weeks

Release: May 20, 1983
Lyrics:
Every breath you take
And every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take
I'll be watching you
Every single day
And every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
I'll be watching you
Oh, can't you see
You belong to me?
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take?
Every move you make
And every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I'll be watching you
Since you've gone, I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around, but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold, and I long for your embrace
I keep crying, baby, baby please
Oh, can't you see
You belong to me?
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take?
Every move you make
And every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I'll be watching you
Every move you make
Every step you take
I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
(Every breath you take)
(Every move you make)
(Every bond you break)
(Every step you take) I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
whoo, hoo
(Every game you play)
(Every night you stay) I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
Songwriter: Gordon Sumner
I'll be watching you
(Every single day)
(Every word you say)
(Every game you play)
(Every night you stay) I'll be watching you
Band/SongFacts:
The Police were an English new wave band, which had their greatest success in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It is considered one of the most successful rock formations of New Wave. Initially inspired by reggae, punk and ska, the trio later experimented with elements of jazz.
In the spring of 1978, The Police signed with A&M Records. The first single Roxanne - pre-financed by Miles Copeland - was initially a failure in the charts.
The Police then embarked on a manager-sponsored tour of the United States in the summer of 1978, traveling across the continent using a hired van (due to the single's poor sales) and borrowed instruments. After that, they toured Australia, where the first successes began to emerge, also in commercial terms. By this time, the band had largely broken away from their punk roots.
The Police were one of the first mainstream bands to incorporate reggae elements into their songs, achieving international success. Although ska and reggae were already very popular in England in the 1970s, this mix of styles remained largely unknown, especially in the USA: Apart from a handful of reggae songs, such as Eric Clapton's cover version of Bob Marley's 'I Shot the Sheriff' (1974) , chart successes of reggae-inspired pop-rock music have previously remained the exception.
The song 'Every Breath You Take' was written towards the end of Sting's marriage to Frances Tomelty. The lyrics tell of a person always controlling the partner: "Every breath, every movement, every broken promise, every step - I'm watching you!"
In 2019, British Music Inc. determined that the song was the most played song on radio with over 15 million plays at the time.
