       gloved fingers laced with his partner’s, in the quiet dew of the dream’s eve his free hand graced her for a moment, a war-roughened thumb running across her cheek as his other fingers lay unmoving. he slid his hand down her cheek, her shoulder, dipping it down to hold her lower back. he pulled her slightly closer, a gentle kiss being placed so sweetly unto her lips, the warmth lingering on hrid’s cold lips for moments after. he held her hand up for a moment, observing it as though it were made of the most precious porcelain- something to be gentle with, something to care for- and a smile crossing his lips. his smile quickly turned into a light chuckle, so pleased to be with lucina here, like this.

       taking care to move her slowly, he twirled her in place, quickly resuming the proper dance formation. a movement he had practiced with countless people over the years. his mother, his sisters, an arranged partner at balls across the years, but never someone he cared for...like this. he mother had told him, once, that when he was with someone he was meant to be with, dancing would be effortless. it would no longer be rehearsed steps and movements, but a routine of trust and affection. he had never truly understood that, until now. seeing these couples at the ball dancing- celica and alm, elise and nils, anastasia and meira, aurora and dusk, orion and his wife, silas and grima- watching them flow and move so freely had sparked an envy in hrid he never knew he was capable of. it was, simply put, a desire to hold lucina close, and perform with her in a way more intimate than one could say. now that he was here with her, now that he was this close to it, he felt...relieved. the war was over, he was to be king, and she...was to be his queen- but oh, she was always so much more to him than that. not a woman to be shown off- though he always would- but a woman who he respected and cherished as his partner. his equal. what a wonderful feeling it was, having her close like this.

       “lucina,” he begun, words delicately spun, passion and love woven into every syllable, “my love, my queen, my moon and stars...” he paused, basking in the beauty of the golden light bouncing off her hair. it was getting late, but he would not wake without having this dance. he didn’t care if it took him hours, he would hold her close. a moments more of looking at her, of hearing the soft music in the ballroom- now seeming so far away- he continued his words.

      “may i have this dance?”
