Hypothetically

Itwas getting ridiculous now. For the longest time they’d stubbornlyremained at logger-heads with one another. Chloémay have become nicer and more likely to stand up to bullies than tobe one, but Alya wasn’t quite ready to publicly admit she’d forgivenher. Chloéhad already apologised sincerely on more than one occasion so she wasequally determined to stand her ground and not let Alya think she’dhurt her by continuing to act like she mistrusted her.

Andyet, they worked together. They had never talked about how they knewwho the other one was, and there had never been an epiphany momentwhen a light-bulb suddenly illuminated the obvious. It had been slowand subtle.

Someoneflicked their hair just so, or made a familiar comment or thelight hit them in the right way so that their silhouette wasrecognisable.

Itwas watching the other when an akuma attack was announced andrealising they used the same old tired excuses as each other todisappear.

Andthen there was the flirting. When Renarde had first appeared, she hadfelt like such an outsider next to an established team. As expectedthey were both friendly but it was clear that they were everything toeach other (Ladybug probably meant even more to Chat than he did toher, but she was a stubborn bug much to Renarde’s annoyance). It hadbeen wonderful for Renarde have her own partner soon after, and ithad been an amazingly thrilling moment for her when she realised thatQueen Bee was flirting with her. So she did the only sensible thingand flirted back. Queen Bee had immediately felt like she was goingto melt.

Sohere they were, standing on the corner of a deserted street wherethey had literally bumped into each other. Alya watched Chloétry to pat off the coffee stain she had accidentally spilled ontoAlya’s shirt, very aware of how her hand lingered once the stain haddried. It wasn’t a perfect moment but clearly Chloéthought it was time.

“Césaire?”she asked abruptly, “Say a girl told you she liked you,hypothetically, h-how would you feel about that? Would you be intogirls?”

“Dependson who she is,” Alya answered, “I might like some girls and someguys, but maybe I have a type.”

Chloébit her lip and stared at the ground uncomfortably. “So,hypothetically, how would this girl test whether or not she was yourtype?”

“Well,in science class we research and test a hypothesis,” Alya said,leaning in close to Chloé’s face and giving her a sultry smile, “SoI guess she would need to hit on me as an experiment.”

Chloémirrored the expression on the other girls face, licking her lips tobring them to Alya’s attention before leaning in the rest of the wayso there was only a hair’s breadth between their lips.

“Wellthen Césaire, you better give itto me. For science!”

Neitherone was sure which of them had closed the last sliver of distance.
