i’m a trans foxgirl who makes music under a couple different aliases and dabbles in other media as well. i use she/her pronouns exclusively, anything referring to me by other pronouns is out of date or just wrong. i am 29 years old and live in the pacific northwest near seattle. i am currently engaged to @daxe, who is also the main visual artist i work with, he creates most of my album covers as well as all the “official” art of my fursona.

With the exception of Arknights what are your thoughts on gacha games?

I don't feel like I need to exclude Arknights from the statement, I can criticize things even if I like them.

In general, I don't like that their widely accepted and even defended business model is "Capitalize on FOMO, exploit gambling addictions, create dependent users". I also think that the use of the "game as a service" model, and one that needs to keep pumping content forever and can't risk to alienate the player, severely limits what can be done with the medium in terms of creativity, because you can't kill off playable characters nilly willy (I actually think Epic Seven was cooking with this, Epic Seven will kill off playable characters and remove them from the plot if it feels like it, or at least used to back when I played, don't know nowadays), relationships and dynamics with characters tend to be limited because otherwise your audience can feel like you are cucking them, and I wish I was kidding but just look at the absolute dumpster fire of a drama going on as we speak (22nd of January, 2024) in Girls' Frontline 2 over in China over one of the characters having interactions with a male NPC, and you can't ever bring a true sense of finality to any given arc because everything ends up having to be foreshadowing, set-up, build-up and so on and on and on. In many cases, you also have a mold cast of Must Have tropes in your playable cast: The Maid, The Idol, The One That Worships The Ground You Walk On, The Underage And Underclothed One, The Underage (But We Treat This One As A Precious Child!) One, Foxgirl, The Cold And Highly Analytical One (But Actually, Loves You), Chuuni, etc, so it feels like in every game I kinda already know at least a third of the cast minimum already and I'm kind of primed to not really want to know them, even though there's subversions I end up liking sometimes (Fenny from Snowbreak is an example of an Idol-type I ended up loving despite not liking Idol-types).

On the other hand, even with these negatives in mind, having a game that periodically updates and adds content, and that you can discreetly play pretty much everywhere on the go due to smartphones being their main 'console', games that foster community and something to talk about with your friends that also play and that will always have something new every couple of weeks, as well as inspire fanart, fanworks, analysis, and commentary, and that tend to be more risque and interesting with their designs is honestly good to have. I personally enjoy the community aspect of gacha games, I consider it one of the two most important aspects for me, because I know I can come here, for example, and see people talking about the story, the characters, the music, the gameplay, and more, every day, and the other important thing to me is how discreet they are, since I can just play a few maps or stages in my phone real fast midst a social situation at work, and then hop back in with a renewed social battery or when a topic I like comes up.

I fully get when people showcase their disdain for gacha, yeah, but if we really want to be nitpicky, the majority of the game industry is kind of a cesspool of toxicity, which is not to say "stop bashing gacha" and instead say "bash the whole thing if you're going to be bashing it anyway" (and we should! Game devs and other personnel in the industry have been crying for better conditions for years now!). Either way, if someone decides to sit at the gambling den, it becomes their responsibility. I want there to be more safeguards for people with actual addictions and to protect them, but with this in mind, if anyone still decides to sit at the den, it's assumed they are going to take responsibility for their actions and financial decisions.

So all in all, yeah, predatory games that suffer in quality due to their own trappings, but also good sources of community, inspiration, and effective at being discreet games you can play anywhere and that get periodic updates (this isn't necessarily exclusive to gacha but it is an aspect of them that bears mentioning, which I point out since no doubt people will want to point out there's good non-gacha smartphone game options out there)

so chipspeech (which i learned about 10 minutes ago) is essentially an emulator for old voice synthesiser chips. but, ingeniously, it associates each one with a character design which is shown prominently in the software. each character has a brief bio on the website.

and you can already see the wheels of fandom turning! search for chipspeech and you find a lot of songs that are 'in character', with the lyrics and music video referring to these characters (for example). it's following the tracks laid by Vocaloid.

thinking about that... vocal synthesis software seems uniquely suited to associating elements of the program with character designs. you've got a ready made narrative: this synthesiser is the voice of this character. if I make a song using the Hatsune Miku software, it is as if Miku has come from where she's hiding in the wifi to sing for me. that does a huge amount to popularise the character and the software! now if I search for Miku on Pixiv I find over 600,000 pictures, and it's hard to overstate just how much stuff she's appeared in.

other software sometimes has mascot characters, for example Krita's Kiki the Cyber Squirrel who you see every time you launch the program (notably in the trans flag colours)...

and some of them can become a little culturally iconic, like Blender's stock model Suzanne the monkey, or Tux the Linux penguin. but it seems much more rare for a fandom to spring up around these characters. something about having a voice leads us to want to imagine them having an identity.

(other hypotheses: maybe it's also just a matter of having a really fantastic character design - most vocaloids aren't so popular as Miku, she truly is iconic. on that front, it will be interesting to see what becomes of Xenia, the alternative Linux mascot who is a trans foxgirl lmao. alternatively, maybe the open source mascots simply don't have the force of Krypton Future Media's marketing budget behind them - but I don't think that really explains why the vocaloid characters are so compelling)

(further consideration: maybe the popularity of vocaloid just an offshoot of the existing idol culture and I'm reading too much into it? vocaloid isn't nearly so popular outside of Japan, and I'd wager people who are into vocaloid might be into Japanese stuff in general.)

on a similar note, my gf always teases me about how similar I am to Sasakoi Himari, as in, I also had a ton of 'but am I really in love with her? / how do I understand what that's like?'-moments at the beginning of our relationship. I am very much not a genki girl who easily makes friends though so the relatability ends with those moments

I love Mihoyho because Imbibitor Lunae song installed me with such powerful emotions, I was ready for it, I was ready to drive into a brick wall, and I was prepared to be devastated, ruined, beaten, and broken down. But now i do think there is actual interesting as to why this has cropped up and why its taken years into my transition before I ended up in spaces with of astrology.

First off, a clarification. To my friend who like astrology for fun, I have no qualms and in fact I'd love to do a tarot reading with y'all.

But now, let's get into refuting the the last part of that post by saying, if it really was just reddit atheist crap, we wouldve made our pseudo religion around Meyers Briggs if that were the case. I can say confidently ive seen no prominence of 4 letter archetypes in girls' bio in online trans spaces. I seen more astrology actually. Hell even 4chan girls have pushed birth charts onto me

The real answer is there's no one answer but if I can simplify it, I'd says this. We simply just identify with other things.

"We have astrology at home!": my first and jokes answer to the premises is we already have archetypes to pidgeonhole ourselves into, the bottom/top dichotomy. Honestly with how were are with that alone, why would we need to add confusion with a mother layer of 12 archetypes when trans femmes can't even understand the secret third thing (vers)(I joke ofc)

Pet stuff/furries: now with the joke aside, here's my leading theory of we have other stuff to simply identity with. Its not that uncommon in internet spaces for trans women to be furries, and if not there's still a prevalance of being into pet stuff. Like honestly I think it really just simpler and easier to introduce and illustrate ones personality by saying "I'm a puppy/fox/cat". We all already have a baseline in respective cultures, ideas of what certain animals are used to personify. A cats probably an introvert, puppy's probably has energy and wants attention and a foxgirl is seen as mischievous. All this already exists within the cultural mythos. No learning about what a moon sign needed! (I still don't get it) point being, this already a form of how we already have something in place of archetypes we're drawn to and it comes with the decided benefit of choosing it yourself. Its the appeal of choosing your starter Pokémon vs being told what you are

I don't have a snappy title for this one: another theory but it comes into the form of a question, why are so many trans femmes on the internet? Why do a lot of them like synth music? Why are they so into speed running? What is it that leads so many trans femmes to be withdrawn and grow living second lives on places like the internet? I feel like you'll find the actually answer is the same with an stereotype of a marginalized people, this is just where they could find a space of their own and they may not.have been as welcome in other places

"Dark mother": I feel like another nail in the coffin in the reddit atheist theory is a sizable amount of us already have our draw into mysticism. It can't be too hard to find spooky goth trans femmes who talk about starting their own cult. We identify mythical creatures as a whole like vampires, demons and the like. This is also complicated when you consider gals like me who were already raised in religions that demanded we be resigned to our fate. Combine this with the boom of rising atheiism this century and simply put, a lot of us rather forge a different path than what just feels like the same old religious determinism.

Scooby doo mask reveal moment: I think the more widely applicable theory for thus proposed phenomenon is simply, transmysogony. The post basically unmasked itself once again to say that we the trans femmes are the odd ones out. To once again label us with some sense if original sin, to project maleness upon us. Firstly it makes sense how other marginal groups latched onto astrology, its kind of a cope. Its a leaning into the mystical feminine, to be about intuition and to not play into that is often seen as a wholesale rejection of that divine femine. I get that its a fun game for a lot of us but I don't think y'all see the cold looks we receive when we even just have a hesitant slepticim of astrology. I've seen the gears turning in girls head trying to scramble and find a new stereotype to fit me in when I simply say I don't wanna play along. I get there is a msyogonistic pushback against astrology as a whole in society but holy shit the way I've had queer folk see me as their enemy for just not wanting to disclose my birth date. I've had trans girls who whip out the whole "why can you be normal" schtik and insenuate im really just a male for not being part of their start religion. Its a cultural barrier and yet another reason for some of us trans femmes to either become more isolated or play along cause we will otherwise not make queer friends in our local communities.

Maybe the.ultimate answer for me, is istn fun and it actually makes me anxious and insecure of surroundings and I dread the next time I'm asked for my sign as I watch another potential friendship crumble

first animatic of my hellpit: Soul Fighter Gwen and Pyke doing the Lunchbox Friends handshake. Just because its iconic and they are best friends. Seems horrid to animate or to conceptualize in an understandable way to do an animatic, but they are iconic and they are besties and they do this. Convince me otherwise.

second animatic of the hellpit of my mind: Empire ants by Gorillaz. Originally was about my fave lol champions and my friend main champions (initially Pyke, Lulu, Thresh, Ahri and Varus) but yeah, i dont know. Im thinking about just Bilgewater champions, lyrics are very fitting to the feeling of living there, and also because i think Pyke would listen to gorillaz specially this album haha. Animatic like the videoclip with conceptual illustrations of the characters just doing stuff, dunno, would be cool.

I recently thought about an animatic with Sarah x Illaoi breakup with Woke Up from adventure time Obsidian, not polished idea but could be interesting if explored.

'I'll die anyway' by girl on red animatic for Ruined King AU Pyke. Whoopsie. Animatic with slow descend to horrible ending, isolation feelings, mm it reeks trauma baby. And i would add a small animatic or illustration with 'Sayo-Nara' from DDLC. Just to stab myself right on the heart.

Oooooohhh i always dreamed with doing an animatic with the Sailor Moon opening with the first 5 star guardians, keeping it that 90's anime style. Its so polished in my mind. I also love to imagine star guardian Lux in the place of Usagi in 'otome no policy'.

I also imagine an animatic with the Ahri (recent) team (Fortune, Syndra, Soraka, Ezreal) but with My Sweet Heart from Tokyo Mew Mew. Just to give them another opening. Its what a foxgirl leader makes me think about.

'Awoken' By wooden toaster was such a banger, it's been a while i imagine a whole animatic with Empyrean Pyke on it, seeing how he was before becoming an empyrean, his empyrean self, and how he haunts the other versions of himself, but always having some root to his old self, if that makes sense?
