Nobody haunts the narrative quite like Markus Sung in Fox’s tongue and Kirin’s Bone. He dies immediately before chapter one and you don’t stop hearing from him since. There isn’t a giant Markus-Shaped hole in the story because the Markus-shaped hole is the story. Impeccable use of narrative ghosts. No notes.

Aaron Fox’sTongueandKirinsBone plots accidentally what certain people he knows could only hope to plot on purpose and I love that for him.

Just finished fox’s tongue and kirin’s bone. Ohhhhh my god that was a good book. I knew it would be since I’m a longtime fan of the author but still. Everyone check this book out literally rn it’s nowhere near as popular as it deserves to be.

Summary:
For fans of The Queen’s Thief and Every Heart a Doorway, this dark fantasy joins folklore and politics, each as deadly as the other… Humanity is dying, hunted to extinction by creatures of legend. One boy was born to save them all. That boy just got knifed in the back. He looked a bit too much like Aaron, you see. Now it’s Aaron’s job to step up, lest his Death correct that little mix-up. But Aaron’s skills as a street rat run more towards stealing and stabbing than towards saving. And the more he learns of what brought dear dead Markus to that fatal alleyway, the more he has to wonder just what the world’s savior was really up to the night the wrong boy died. The best rated serial fantasy, now available in print, ebook, and on Audible!

Hmmm. I see. So what modernity wants in their stories is morally grey characters - not in the sense that they are merciless killers with good hearts but in the sense that they are flawed but that the lines between good and evil are too blurry to properly make out. And they want those characters of ambiguous morality to make choices that still end up for the better or everyone and those they care about because perhaps what matters deep down inside is caring. More than a story where the definitions of good and evil are properly outlined, we want a story where the choices we make matter, that even if the skies are grey, we can still paint color in this world

of all the side characters in the skin stealer's son, the weaponsmith is my absolute favorite. She's all caught up in keeping her people safe after they've been enslaved for generations and then in waltzes the world's shadiest boy, about to wreck havoc across the heldlands and expedite all her plans by several decades

Good ol’ Aaron Foxstongue, the only human with two deaths and neither of them want anything to do with them.
but to be quite honest I am fascinated by the behavior of the deaths in Fox’s tongue and Kirin’s bone and The Skin Stealer’s Son. So many of them seem to be completely apathetic towards anything and everything unless and until it gets in the way of their charge’s Predicted Time of Death (ie: aaron is involved). I’ve seen deaths that are kindly and deaths that are hostile and deaths that are solemn and deaths that are hungry and deaths that revel in their nature, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a death that’s apathetic before. They treat attempted massacres like ice cream socials and don’t give a second glance to the victims or the perpetrators. And yet some of may or may not have plans for aaron?
anyway please buy Fox’s tongue and Kirin’s bone and then read its sequel on royal road, it’s really good.

Come to the Fox's Tongue and Kirin's Bone Fandom we've got:
An asexual bilingual vegetarian who missed his own murder and is making every day of his continued existence other people's problem (sometimes as a means to an end).
A thirteen-year-old Princess with a birthmark who Is In The Walls and Will Not Be Contained.
A thirteen-year-old Prince who loves the baker's apprentice's pastries and his own family in that order, and who does not want the weight of the world on his shoulders no matter how many people want to thrust it onto him.
A 20-something Prince who does not know whether or not he's a Trojan Horse.
A long-suffering lieutenant who is Trying His Best.
A royal spymaster known only as "The Lady" who wears the skins of shapeshifters to turn into different animals and who can fight toe-to-toe against dragons.
An absolute cinnamon roll who can do no wrong, who braved the journey alone from the outermost parts of the kingdom to the capital in order to become the baker's apprentice and serve his nation.
And all of them can and will stab you if the situation calls for it.

Let me reveal two things with one picture: my hand and my first 5 star read this year.
I loved this. The world building is phenomenal. The world was creative, the creatures are making sense. The world and the characters are interacting, it's not just a setting, it's the whole point. The characters are interesting, they have layers (of multiple trauma). They are according to their age and are not annoying, which is a high bar for young people. This is kinda dark, but not too dark. It was perfect for my taste, especially with the fact that there is no romance in it, apart from the family drama. I loved the bickering, the fact that the different people have different kind of humour, but they make it work?? To be one big good thing? I just can't.
Will I be recommending this book to everyone in the next twenty years? Yes. Yes, I will, and I won't be ashamed of it.

Aaron from Fox's Tongue and Kirin's Bone would really like Falst i think. Maybe even to the point of trying to befriend him without any ulterior motives.
I'm... not sure if that feeling would be reciprocated. Considering the fact that literally everything about Aaron is sketchy at best and this feeling only increases the more a person talks to him.
Despite all their disagreements regarding things like "how much murder is too much murder" and "what's better: being honest and upfront with people or playing them to your advantage like a Rakhn-damned fiddle" their most heated argument is about the benefits of keeping a pocket pantry vs just eating food when you have it. ("If you save it for later, you've something to nibble on the next time your stomach decides that it's hungry." "Well you wouldn't feel that hungry again so quick if you just ate it all in one sitting!"
One thing they do agree on: neither of them are big fans of Open Sky.

[id: Two photos showing a hardcover copy of Fox's Tongue and Kirin's Bone. First is of the cover, which features a grinning fox whose tongue is wrapped around a kirin's neck. Second is of the title page, a black and white copy of the cover image, and the "also by Allison M Kovacs" page, which advertises Li's Friends: Horrible Pets to Protect You From the Horrible World. End id.]
