nogales, new mexico. a border town in arizona that I worked and lived in for three months during my time in americorp. we lived on a house on the very top of the hill that would let you watch the sun set over mexico. there was a courtyard with a fountain that I did yoga in with my team leader every morning and evening. we worked at the local food bank as one of our jobs and they gave us cases of starbucks coldbrew that we would keep outside so it would be chilled by the morning before we left for work. our job was doing community taxes and painting a neighborhood fence pastel pink. it was a lot of going over the border to get guavas and haircuts. riding in the back of trucks to see stars. falling in love with a town that very tenderly took us in. definitely the most narrative place I've ever lived. it's one of those things that wouldn't be the same (the team and friends I lived with, the time, the unique way we integrated) if I went back now but I do miss it.

a few years ago a bunch of my high school friends including my best friend at the time and his girlfriend (who I also was good friends with) drove up the mountains on a whim. it was past midnight and it was so dark when we arrived to a look out. we lit sparklers and ran around the darkness laughing. then everyone branched off to go look at the mountains alone. I remember stepping off the trail and walking to the very edge and seeing the whole of the valley twilight dark. it was a very spiritual moment for me. I've never wanted to be alone longer but there was that comfort of knowing when I went back there would be people I loved and who loved me waiting.

I did a solo hike in the rocky mountains in college. it was right after a big snow so no else was at the area I was. only car in the parking lot, trail fully covered only navigated by the trail of footprints people had left earlier that day. it was so quiet and so pure. the snow was blinding and it was crisp but not too cold. I walked for hours until it grew dark. it was terrifying finding my way back, realizing that I could get lost without any definitive trail to lead me back. though a part of me definitely did want to go further - to see world at night. when I did find my way back the drive down the mountain was harrowing. dark and hardly any service, just listening to amen by ritual over and over again until I found my way back into the cities. it was a good day.

the redwood national forest. I visited there with my family when I was fourteen. I don't have a lot of memories that are important to me from being a kid but there was something so spiritual and big about the redwoods that really resonated with me. in particular, the dancing tree that was used as a dancing floor with food scuffs all over it. I remember thinking that if I ever got married I would want it to be there.

the residential program I worked at in portland. in complicated ways, some bad and some beautiful. it's too private to really talk more about but the people I met, the roles I played, and the events I experienced engraved themselves into my soul. it's something I'll never forget and shaped me. but also is not something I would ever do again because it made me realize that I didn't want to work within a broken and abusive system.
