In 1967, Caroline Rose Foster (1877-1979) recorded this history about life in Morristown and her love of working on the busy farm attached to her Morris Township estate, Fosterfields. During her long life, Ms. Foster witnessed Morris County’s transformation from a largely agricultural community to Gilded Age retreat, and finally a middle class suburban enclave.

While speaking with Morristown & Morris Township Librarian, Barbara Hoskins, Ms. Foster stated, "Now nobody can stand a load of manure going by or they can't stand a dog barking or a cow mooing or a chicken crowing. I like those sounds, I think they're home-like."

Caroline is pictured at top sitting for a portrait in1917; while managing the farm at Fosterfields in an undated photograph; and while having her portrait taken in 1976. The Caroline Foster Oral History Collection was recently digitized and is now available online.

What was life like for "the Marys", the first two servants Caroline Foster remembered living at Fosterfields? Why were the Morristown housewives calling for a revolt against their servants in 1907? When the widow Lizzie Carroll came to work as a live-in servant at the Willows in 1905, where did her sons live, and how did the family survive? On Saturday, stop by @fosterfieldsnj as they debut three new site-specific performances during "Workers at the Farm: The 1900s Immigration Experience." The event starts at 11:000 am with activities throughout the farm and performances beginning at 1:30 pm. #nj #njhistory #SpreadTheHistory #historygirl #history #americanhistory #blog #blogger #travelblog #travelblogger #jerseycollective #explorenj #journeythroughjersey #westfield #westfieldnj #njspots #theatre #fosterfieldsnj #fosterfields #immigrants #irishservants #servants #farm (at Fosterfields Living Historical Farm) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwIEycdHrXc/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=ke6exp31u417
