Klaus Review: Netflixā€™s First Animated Movie Has Its Heart in the Right Place
Tumblr media
As Netflix has gotten bigger, it has ā€” somewhat naturally ā€” made bigger bets. It forked over upwards of $300 million (about Rs. 2,150 crores) to produce Martin Scorsese and Michael Bayā€™s latest movies, the mob drama The Irishman, starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, and the action thriller 6 Underground, led by Ryan Reynolds. And itā€™s said to be spending $200 million (about Rs. 1,434 crores) on Red Notice alone, an action flick that stars Dwayne ā€œThe Rockā€ Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Reynolds. But these bets are risky too. All these films are not based on existing intellectual properties, which is scary for traditional Hollywood studios reliant on theatrical earnings. And as part of taking on projects that others in Hollywood refused to bet on, Netflix has gotten its first animated feature: Klaus.
For one, Klaus has been made in the old ways of traditional hand-drawn 2D animation, which fell out of favour in the early 2000s as computer animation took over. But thanks to animator and debutante director Sergio Pablos ā€” best known as the creator of Despicable Me ā€” who makes use of modern touches such as volumetric lighting, Klaus can easily be mistaken for computer animation, something Pablos knows too well. That means most viewers will overlook the painstaking work that went into it, which doesnā€™t get much traction anyway in a world now run by Pixar and DreamWorks. Rather interestingly, Pablos said the sticking point for Hollywood studios wasnā€™t Klausā€˜ animation style, but the focus of its story: Christmas.
As you have likely surmised from the filmā€™s title already, Klaus involves the legendary figure of Santa Claus. In fact, this is supposed to be an origin story. Every part of the Santa Claus mythos is given a backstory in Klaus, from how children came to write letters to Santa and why the presents go through the chimney, from how reindeer came to pull his sleigh and why they are imagined with the ability of flight, to how Santa got his red-and-white attire and how those who help him make toys came to be. Some of the ā€œanswersā€ are delightful executions of physical comedy, while others reaffirm the Netflix filmā€™s inherent belief in the power of kindness. Or as its characters say: ā€œA true act of goodwill always sparks another.ā€
Klaus begins by introducing us to a spoiled young man named Jesper Johanssen (voiced by Jason Schwartzman), whoā€™s lazing away his life at the Royal Postal Academy, run by his dad the Postmaster General (Sam McMurray). But heā€™s in for a rude awakening. With his father wanting to make a man out of his son, Jesper is dispatched to the frigid, remote island of Smeerensburg, somewhere above the Arctic Circle. There, he must set up a postal office and stamp 6,000 letters in the first year if he doesnā€™t want to be cut off from the family fortune heā€™s been living off. Itā€™s clear that Jesper has never had to work a day in his life, and making matters worse, he has no clue that Smeerensburg is an exceptionally harsh posting.
You see, there exists a generations-old feud between the isleā€™s two factions, the Krum and the Ellingboe, led by a matriarch (Joan Cusack) and a patriarch (Will Sasso), respectively. That means the kids donā€™t go to school, where the only teacher Alva (Rashida Jones) has turned into a fishmonger to make enough money to leave. And for Jesper, that means the townsfolk have no interest in sending letters to one another, given half of them despise the other half. The newly-minted mailman comes close to giving up until he accidentally leaves a childā€™s drawing at the doorstep of a well-built, white-bearded woodsman named Klaus (J.K. Simmons), who has a huge collection of hand-crafted toys. Klaus recruits Jesper to help him deliver a toy to said kid, and Jesper realises thereā€™s a business in getting toys to kids.
Pablos proves himself to be quite adept as a first-time director, as he brings in elements from other genres to punch up what is a family comedy at the heart of it. The introduction to the horrid town of Smeerensburg feels like itā€™s been lifted off a horror or Western movie, with the monochrome visage of its cityscape, the looming dread of its seeming emptiness, or the psychopathic tendencies of its young inhabitants. In a later montage, Klaus presents Jesper as a drug pusher, a visual motif clearly meant for the adults among the viewers. Thereā€™s plenty of comedy for the Netflix filmā€™s target audience (kids) as well, with a collection of sight gags and slapstick humour, which is offset by sarcastic quips and self-aware, darkly comedic lines of dialogue elsewhere.

But the writing ā€” from newcomers Jim Mahoney, Zach Lewis, and Pablos ā€” is weaker in terms of characters and story. Alva is largely present in Klaus to tell Jesper what a good job heā€™s done and then end up as his love interest, even though the film bothers to present no evidence of their connection whatsoever. And in likely not wanting to upset anyone, Klaus ends up keeping things simple and reaffirms the existing legend of Santa Claus. It does have one interesting thing to say about Christmas. Klaus subverts the message that gift-giving began as a wholly altruistic exercise, by noting that most humans only ever do things out of self-interest. Itā€™s funny that something as wholesome as Santa Claus could be borne out of that.
But Klaus also shows that childrenā€™s acts, even when driven by greed, can set an example for adults. For the obliviousness that stems through their innocence overlooks grudges and in turn, undoes the mistakes of the past. Or in other words: ā€œA true act of goodwill always sparks another.ā€
Klaus is out now on Netflix worldwide. A Hindi-language dub is available as well.

Sridevi achieved what many of our biggest heroes could not, shares her biographer Satyarth Nayak - Times of India
Today marks the second death anniversary of Indian cinemaā€™s superstar, Sridevi. Capturing her illustrious journey in his book Sridevi: The eternal screen goddess, Satyarth Nayak remembers the legend who played some path breaking roles and left a permanent void in the Indian film industry. Here is the lowdown of the chatā€¦
Your first book was a mystery thriller. What inspired you to write Srideviā€™s biography? I have been an ardent admirer of Sridevi and I had always been appalled by the fact that there was no elaborate book celebrating her prolific career. Hailed as Indiaā€™s First Female Superstar, she not only remains the longest running No.1 actress in Hindi Cinema but sheā€™s the only actress who was No.1 in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu cinema. Such was her stardom that she towered above her male co-stars and became the ā€˜heroā€™ of her films. She is also the only heroine who made a triumphant comeback post her marriage, thus shattering Bollywood rules, just as she had challenged industry patriarchy throughout her career. Her legacy spans fifty years and yet there was no book chronicling these legendary achievements of her. I guess Srideviā€™s massive body of work was intimidating for most writers and I glad my book got to celebrate the female megastar. While the initial idea of this book had been discussed with her and Boney sir, post her untimely demise, itā€™s now taken the shape and form of a tribute to her inspiring cinematic journey. I am grateful to both Boney sir and Penguin for helping me turn my vision into reality.
Today marks the death anniversary of the legendary actress. Since you have literally lived through her life, what are your emotions? My deepest emotion is that Sriā€™s untimely demise is a big blow to the cause of actresses in cinema. Sridevi had the guts to refuse films opposite Amitabh unless she had an equally solid role. Amitabh had to woo her by sending her a truckload of flowers to finally get her to act opposite him in Khuda Gawah. It just shows that she was always someone who flowed against the tide. She respected her own stardom and talent and wanted to remind the audiences of the true glory of an Indian film heroine. She became the ā€˜heroā€™ of her films and raised the status of the Indian film heroine to a whole new dimension. Today we talk about misogyny, patriarchy, sexism and toxic masculinity in the industry and Sridevi had battled it all in the eighties and emerged victorious. She was respectfully addressed as ā€˜Maiā€™ in Bollywood who had become more powerful than her male co-stars and was even paid more than them. Itā€™s even more relevant today and I want it to be a big take-away for the readers of this book. She not only empowered her audiences but also became a messiah for the LGBT community worldwide. She was the only star who could be No.1 in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu industries. By becoming a truly pan-Indian megastar, Sridevi achieved what many of our biggest heroes could not. She will forever remain an inspiration for generations of actresses to come.
What was the biggest challenge you faced while writing Srideviā€™s biography? One big challenge was what to keep out of the book given that Srideviā€™s career is so prolific. This was a book about an actress whose career spanned 50 years, 5 languages and 300 films. Condensing this gargantuan journey in a book was quite daunting but that was also fun. Another big challenge was to write this book in the absence of Sridevi. If she would have been alive, the narrative would have been even more personal. Thankfully, I had a huge stack of film magazines from the 80s and 90s that form a part of my personal collection. They are filled with interviews of Sridevi through various stages of her career. In her absence, those quotes have become her voice in my book. When you read those, you will get glimpses of both the person and the performer that she was.
What were the elements you steered clear of while penning the biography? I have consciously avoided anything that falls in the realm of speculation. Everything in the book is certified and factual. All information given has been double-checked for authenticity and duly attributed to sources. Hence any data which is mere conjecture has been kept out of the book. While I was initially keen to interview Janhvi and Khushi, Boney sir advised me against it as it would have been emotionally taxing for both of them. So I avoided intruding on that personal space of grief. Also there are many conspiracy theories floating around regarding Sriā€™s sudden demise. Thankfully many credible voices spoke to me about it and I have attempted to provide a rational explanation of her death.
What is the biggest treat for readers in the book? The biggest treat would be the memories and rare anecdotes about Sridevi that everyone I have interviewed have shared for the book. I was fortunate to interview over 70 personalities, both in Bollywood and down south, who were associated with Sridevi both personally and professionally. Those interviews have yielded fascinating stories. Like while Kamal Haasan reveals the pranks he pulled on Sri, Anil Kapoor reminisces about the Marwah wedding night in Dubai when he met Sri for the last time. While Rajinikanth remembers moments from his first film with Sridevi, Nagarjuna reveals an incident that somewhat forewarns the manner of Sriā€™s tragic demise. While Chiranjeevi shares what he learnt from Sridevi, Karan Johar recollects her personal traits that he discovered watching her on sets. While Raghavendra Rao talks about a near fatal incident that happened with Sridevi when she was a child star, Ram Gopal Varma shares his favourite Sridevi moment off-screen. And while Shruti Haasan shares the life lesson that she picked up from Sri, Kajol and Vidya Balan tell you why she remains their biggest inspiration. You will also find personal anecdotes about how Sridevi coped with her fatherā€™s death and her motherā€™s botched up surgery in New York. Many such anecdotes form the beating heart of the book.
What is the feedback you are getting about the book? I am ecstatic that the book has been getting a wonderful response from readers. Many keep tweeting to me to share how much they have loved the book because it reveals so many unknown things about her. For many, it has also been an emotional experience to relive Srideviā€™s fascinating journey that culminated with such an untimely end. One fan actually wrote to me saying this book has become like Bhagvad Gita for him! That her admirers have loved the book is the biggest reward for me. The reviews have also been fantastic and we have already entered the bestseller list on Amazon.
Last but not the least, why do you write? Scribo ergo sum. I write therefore I am. Period.

Parineeti, Taapsee And Others: 7 Bollywood Actors Who Gave Up Lucrative Jobs For Movies Niharika Nayak Hyderabd040-395603080 January 9, 2020
Itā€™s not every day that you hear of actors coming from a corporate or financial background, but the ones featured on our list do. In case youā€™re stuck in a soulless corporate job that drains you out, and if youā€™ve been looking to quit, you realize that you need all the motivation you can get, right? Why not take a cue from these Bollywood entertainers who made that move? Bollywood has seen numerous actors whoā€™ve maintained odd-jobs as their primary source of income before venturing into the impressive (or less) universe of movies. Be that as it may, this career shift seems to have worked out exceptionally well for them. Here are a few stories of actors who quit their lucrative jobs to follow their true passion in life, acting.

He proceeded to bag roles in films like Bombay Velvet, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, Uri: The Surgical Strike and even in the Netflix show, Lust Stories.
