Democrats Want Ben Carson Fired for…Protecting Women?

Remember when Democrats proudly proclaimed themselves the Party of Women? Gee, it doesn’t seem like it was that long ago. You recall, they even ran on a platform accusing Republicans of waging a “War on Women”? Yes, this was the party you wanted to belong to if you were a feminist, militant or otherwise. Those mean old nasty Republicans and their “binders full of women” were going to do absolutely nothing to make sure that Miss Jane America got her fair shake in the world! Fight the power! Fight the patriarchy!

Hmm, well it seems that an inconvenient thing has happened between then and now. See nowadays, we have to consider everyone a woman. Well, everyone who claims they are one, anyhow. And that puts Democrats in the weird position of actually taking umbrage with a guy like HUD Secretary Ben Carson, who is trying to keep women’s shelters safe from the predators who might take advantage of them.

The controversy: Carson reportedly said, in a closed-door meeting with HUD staff, that he was concerned that women’s shelters would be letting in “big, hairy men” who claimed to identify as women. Under the current law, they would have to be permitted entry. Carson thinks that’s outrageous and, regardless of the political correctness of the moment, so do many who operate these shelters. These laws put women in further danger, compromise their security, and take significant toll on the very purpose of these shelters.

Of course, all the Democrats heard was transgender “hate speech.”

“Sickening. Ben Carson shouldn’t even be given the chance to resign. He should be fired tonight,” Rep. Joe Kennedy III tweeted.

“HUD’s mission is to legally guarantee housing⁠—especially to vulnerable populations. Ben Carson should resign immediately. He is unfit for his office. These comments perpetuate stereotypes and harm trans Americans,” wrote 2020 candidate Tom Steyer.

“Shameful,” wrote Kamala Harris. “These derogatory comments by Secretary Carson are part of a long pattern that shows his disregard for the transgender community. It’s simply unacceptable.”

“Secretary Carson’s transphobic remarks are completely unacceptable,” wrote Elizabeth Warren. “Trans women who experience homelessness are already disproportionately more likely to face violence. If Secretary Carson is not willing to do his job and protect all Americans experiencing housing insecurity then he shouldn’t have his job.”

Only problem? Carson wasn’t talking about actual transgender individuals.

“During a recent meeting with local staff in San Francisco, I made reference to the fact that I had heard from many women’s groups about the difficulty they were having with women’s shelters because sometimes men would claim to be women, and that HUD’s policy required the shelter to accept—without question—the word of whoever came in, regardless of what their manifested physical characteristics appeared to be,” Carson wrote in an email to staff.

“This made many of the women feel unsafe, and one of the groups described a situation to me in which ‘big hairy men’ would come in and have to be accepted into the women’s shelter even though it made the women in the facility very uncomfortable,” he continued. “My point was that we have to permit policies that take into consideration the rights of everybody, including those women.”

Democrats, in their zeal to protect an aberration of the population, have turned their back on vulnerable women. Our hope is that the much-maligned Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists (TERFs) swell in number as these instances of injustice grow more frequent. We may not have much in common, politically, with these feminists, but at least they know what a woman is. Shameful as it may be, this appears to be the bar for sane conversation nowadays.
