Love you all like Donkey love Waffles. Take care. 💖
You cross your arms as you narrow your eyes at the front of the lecture hall. It's your last choice in elective but the only one you could get to pad out your schedule. Law. Hardly riveting stuff.
What's more intriguing is the professor. No, no, you haven't acquired a taste for them, if anything Hansen taught you to be wary of them. The very lesson that has you glaring down at Professor Barber, waiting for his first slip.
You're not clever by any means, you're just the only one looking for the signs. The same ones you saw in Tweed at your first meeting, those that you catch in yourself, and the other girls who won't say the truth aloud.
Brownie, that's the one. You see the way he looks at her and you note how she stays after class, every week. Only three weeks so far but a pattern is a pattern.
You twist your pen, the nib poking out, then do it again, retracting it. The clicking noise forms a tempo at your listless fidgeting. You have a study date tonight with the girls, what’s one more? You’re forming a habit of taking on lost souls, yourself just another wisp floating in the void.
You scribble down the date for your next quiz, your mind hardly processing the words as you guide the pen. You’re trying to plot your approach. You think you have an idea.
As Professor Barber dismisses class, you slide your notebook into your bag and hike it up onto your shoulder. At the edge of the row, as usual, you quickly descend as Brownie stays in her seat, waiting and watching her feet. You catch the small glances aimed in her direction from the man behind the podium.
You take out your phone and quickly text Cookie; ‘you got room for one more?’
You don’t wait for an answer. You don’t care. You’ve made up your mind, it’s a warning, not a question.
“Hey,” you come around the front row. The girl doesn’t seem to hear you. Or she’s ignoring you, “um, Brownie?”
She looks up, startled. She sends a look towards Barber but you ignore him. You cross your arms and sway, your skirt stirring around your legs.
“Remember me?” You ask, “you lent me your pen?”
“Oh, uh, I remember,” she squeaks, her voice thin and raw, as if she never uses it, “hi.”
“Um, so,” you try to sound casual, “I’m not really a law student. English,” you touch your chest and smile, “and I think I could use a study buddy, if you’re interested?”
“Er, oh?” Her brows draw together, “I don’t know…” she scratches her neck, another peek at the professor, “I–”
“Do you have plans? Or maybe you already have someone to study with,” you look away and frown, “sorry, I just figured I’d ask. I need someone to help me make sense of all this. I’m totally lost.”
There’s a subtle rumble, a noise you likely wouldn’t notice if you didn’t know to listen for it. You don’t even glance back at Barber as you hear him packing up. You sit in the chair next to Brownie and smile.
“I just figured you’re like, the smartest person in the class, and I need this grade to bring my average up. Please?”
She chews her lip and plays with the high collar of her turtleneck. She hides beneath her lashes, shrugging before she manages a tiny nod. Her fingers flutter and she shivers nervously.
“I can help,” she presses her fingers to the ribbed fabric of her shirt, “sure, I…”
“Me and my friends are meeting tonight, we’re getting pizza,” you chirp, “wanna tag along?”
“Friends?” She bats her eyes at you frightfully.
“Oh, don’t worry, they’re all super friendly and they’ll love you.”
“I… I don’t know. I’m not very…” she speaks so quietly you have to lean in to hear her.
“It’s okay, you don’t have to say much,” you assure her, “Cookie always bakes way too many brownies. You could help us finish them, huh?”
She looks terrified. Her mouth scrunches and shifts back and forth as she measures her options. You know exactly what she’s thinking. That man will be disappointed. Well, let him be. Unless he wants to step forward and admit that he’s fucking a goddamn student.
“Hm, okay, but… just for a little. I can’t stay very long.”
“Just until I figure out what actus reus means, alright?” You stand and send a sharp look towards the professor. He quickly dips his chin down in feigned concentration as he looks over his notes. Not today, fucker.
“Okay,” she gets up and lifts a crochet bag, her hand shaking as she tucks away her laptop in the slouchy purse, “um, I’m sorry, but… I forgot your name.”
“Don’t be sorry,” you wait for her to pass you before walking at her side towards the door. She’s still hesitant and reluctant as she looks over her shoulder, “Flora.”
💮
“This is Brownie,” you introduce the mousy addition to the girls as she tries to fade into the blue wall, “she’s in my law class.”
She doesn’t move. She just looks up with round eyes as the others cheerily call out their welcome, already clustered around the table amid coffee cups, laptops, and a few baked goods. The scent of cinnamon mingles with the stale caffeine.
“Welcome, Brownie,” Muse gives both of you a start as she appears at the girl’s other shoulder, “I’m Muse! Oh, you have wise eyes.” She flutters around the girl, a boa around her shoulders, “you would look wonderful in jade. Yes, it would highlight your undertones.”
Brownie frowns and mutters, but you can’t tell if it's a thank you or just a whimper.
“She says I’m a sapphire type,” you remark as you wave her away from the door, “you can toss your coat with ours,” you motion to the bench bench piled with outerwear, “then I’ll introduce you to the rest… they’re not as bouncy as Muse.”
Brownie gives up her dark gray coat and steps out of her plain boots. She dresses in a very simple way. Turtle necks, corduroys, nothing with much shape or structure. Her style can be best described as part of the wall.
“So,” you walk just ahead of her. She stays behind you as if trying to hide, “Tweed, Foxy, Sunny,” you point out the three girls at the table, “you met Muse,” you look at the artsy wraith fluttering around the counter, “and Cookie, our host.”
The woman in question puts down a plate of sugar cookies, “hi, nice to meet you! I’ll find an extra chair.”
Brownie doesn’t say a word. You realise it might be a bit overwhelming. She reminds you of Tweed in that way. You point her to a chair and assure her you’ll take whatever Cookie comes up with. She sits, hugging her bag in her lap as she stares at the table.
Foxy gets up as you head for the counter, you pause and look back at Brownie, “you want some tea? Something to drink?”
She chews her lip before she answers, “water, please, if that’s okay.”
You nod and go to the cupboard. Foxy comes up next to you and leans on the counter as you shift to pull out the water jug from the fridge. You come back to her as she keeps her voice low.
“What’s up with that one?”
“Law professor, I think,” you mutter, “could barely get her here.”
“Fuck, another one, huh?”
“Uh, yeah, you know, shitty men everywhere,” you fill the glass, “I brought her here to try to forget all that. Like the rest of us.”
“Sure thing,” she taps the countertop with her nails and pushes off.
You put the jug back and take the water over to Brownie as Cookie emerges with a small white stool. You accept it, the seat lower than the rest so that you feel like a kid at the table. You pull out your laptop and open it up. Your phone slides out with it and you catch it as notifications flash on the screen.
You tap your thumb to expand the preview; Insta, emails, and a text that neither surprises or interests you. Professor Dillhole’s message is swiped away without reading a single word. You got your grade and now you’re done with him. He doesn’t seem to get the hint.
“So, Brownie, you’re in law? Are you going to be a lawyer?” Foxy asks.
Brownie shrugs and nods. You wonder for a moment how she’ll manage a courtroom when she can barely give a vocal answer. Well, she has lots of time to figure that out.
“That’s really cool,” you say, “you know, I don’t have the mind for all that. I can’t really sort out one act from the rest. I’m more into bigger narratives than the tiny details.”
She looks at you, still hugging her bag. She’s ready to leave at any moment.
“Why don’t you stay a while?” You poke her bag, “how about we compare notes? I’m sure I missed all the important stuff. This tort gibberish is doing my head in.”
She puts her chin down and slowly lifts the flap of her bag. She slides out her laptop and gently lowers the bag between her feet. She opens the lid, almost reluctant, and her desktop comes to life. You see the email in the corner right before the notif flicks away. A.Barber… Mmm.
For a moment, you feel a pang of guilt. You hope your impromptu invitation doesn’t cost her anything. That he doesn’t hold it against her. You should’ve thought of that sooner.
“Let me find…” she trails off, her finger running over the trackpad.
You wait patiently. No, you don’t feel bad. She deserves this. Like the rest of you, she needs a place to get away. Just a single space where she doesn’t have to be crushed under his thumb.
💮
You sit outside of Dean Drysdale’s office. His secretary types away at her keyboard and you twirl your phone in your grip. It’s mostly a paperweight these days as you ignore almost every message that comes in. Blocking didn’t work on that jag off.
You jiggle your foot anxiously. This meeting is important. You really need this scholarship and through the grace of your hard work, and the regrettable cooperation of a particular professor, you’ve met all the requirements. The last piece, an interview with the dean.
The clock ticks, drawing your attention in the stagnant office. It’s five after. The dean is running late. That doesn’t really matter, he can do whatever he wants. But you’re early and that can only help in his consideration.
You hear muffled voices near the other side of the door. Shadows darken the frosted glass emblazoned with the dean’s name and credentials. You sit up straight but try not to look too eager. The door opens and your heart falls into your ass. Fuck, not this guy.
“Friday,” Dean Drysdale claps Lloyd’s back as they emerge from the office.
“Can’t wait,” Lloyd returns but his eyes are on you, “ah, sorry,” he says to you, “didn’t mean to keep him so late.”
“No problem, professor,” you stand and grip the strap of your bag, masking your disgust with a smile, “Dean Drysdale,” you greet the other man, “nice to meet you. I’m Flora.”
“The one and only,” he doesn’t offer his hand, “looks like you’re running behind so better get started.” He points you into his office, “later, Hansen.”
He tosses the last remark over his shoulder as he turns to follow you through the door. You enter and hover across from his desk. You hate to be presumptuous. He shuts the door with a click.
“Sit,” he orders tersely as he rounds the desk and falls heavy into the leather chair.
You lower yourself. Your nerves are wily, especially after seeing Professor Hansen. You had no idea he was close with the dean.
“Hansen speaks highly of you,” he begins, “as do the rest of your professors.”
“Oh, I, that’s great.”
“So, I have thirty candidates. Why should I choose you?” He leans back, elbow on the armrest, posture nonchalant as he swivels.
“Um, well, I work hard. I keep my average up where it needs to be. I have gotten involved in quite a few extracurriculars, I helped with the library bakesale and–”
“Boring. Got it. That’s all in your application,” he dismisses, “just like all the other ones. Bunch of filler. But why you?”
You’re speechless. You prepared for this but you feel as if you fell into this from thin air. You don’t know what he wants to hear.
“How many parties have you been to?” He asks suddenly.
“What?” You can’t help your surprise.
“Come on. You’re a young coed. I know how it is. So, let’s narrow it down. Fall term, how many?”
You squint and look at the wall, thinking. You’re not much of a partier. You twiddle your fingers and count in your head.
“Four, maybe,” you push your shoulders up. “I don’t really… I mostly just spend my spare time with my friends–”
“Are they hot?” He chuckles and sits up, your mouth falling open. “Relax, I hate these things. So uptight,” he rolls his shoulders as he wheels closer to the desk and plants his elbows, “at least you're honest. The last six freshmen that sat there insisted on a big O. Think they would see the plaque and realise I’m not stupid.”
“Well, I… yeah,” you chew on the tip of your tongue. You really don’t know how to proceed. “I brought a portfolio of my essays–”
“No time for that,” he waves his hand at you, “think I got the picture.”
“Oh,” you frown.
He stares at you, poking his cheek with his tongue as his brows draw together. He hums and sits back, once more swiveling back and forth. He tilts his head and clucks.
“You’ll hear from my secretary,” he declares at last.
“That’s it?” You gulp.
“Yeah, whatever, I got about five more of these today and I need a fucking coffee,” he lifts his feet onto his desk. “Be a doll and send in Sienna when you leave.”
“Um, okay,” you stand slowly, “thanks for your time.”
He doesn’t respond as he takes out his phone. You hide your unease and leave. As you emerge you see the name card on the secretary’s desk. Sienna.
“Er, he told me to send you in,” you approach.
She looks up at you and snaps her gum, “great.”
She gets up as she rolls her eyes and you swiftly march past the desk. You don’t understand what just happened. Did you fuck it up? What did Hansen say? Oh my fucking good, you swear if he–
Your thoughts race ahead of your feet as they carry you without intention. You find yourself in the stairwell, stunned and confused. You turn down the first flight only to dodge out of the way of a figure coming up. You yipe as you find yourself shoved into the corner, Lloyd’s arms outstretched to pen you in.
His hands brace the painted brick as he smirks down at you, “hey, sweet cheeks, long time, no suck.”
You curl your lip at him and snarl, “get away from me.”
You shove on his chest and he retracts his hands, grabbing your wrists. You struggle with him but he easily pushes your hands up, pinning them to the wall. He leers as looms in front of you, his eyes scanning down your body.
“Damn, I forgot how good you look in those skirts. Panties or nah?”
“Fuck off–”
“Always looked better around your waist–”
“I said get the fuck off of me. I’ll scream–”
“I’d love to hear it,” he snickers, “what happened to us, flower? We were doing great. Living life, fucking hard.”
“You’re an animal–”
“We had a good thing, the whole professor-with-benefits gig worked for us, didn’t it? It sure as hell loosened you up. Look at you, all wound tight–”
You snap your teeth at him and he recoils, barely saving his nose from the chomp. He cackles and keeps you trapped, squeezing your wrists tighter. His laughter rolls out to a growl.
“You know, if you get that scholarship, they need two professor’s to sign off on it… but you know, I don’t just put my name on anything–”
“You’re pathetic.”
“I fucking am when I got blue balls, honey,” he scoffs, “just touch em. A little bit.”
You grit your teeth and throw your knee up. You yank your hands free and shoulder past Lloyd as he bends and grips his crotch. He chokes on his breath as he leans against the wall. You bluster away as quickly as you can.
“Not like that,” he gurgles as you charge down the stairs, dizzy as you turn down the next flight.
So much for that scholarship.
💮
You stare at the C circled in red on your last quiz. Law isn’t your forte, that’s clear. Your GPA and hopes for that scholarship are dwindling in that simple little letter. You look up at the front of the lecture hall as Professor Barber reclaims the podium, preparing to take up the answers as he does every other week.
You sit closer than before. You’re always sure to take the seat next to Brownie and she has yet to tell you to stop. Something about her though suggests that she won’t ever do that. No has been erased from her vocabulary.
You don’t miss the Professor’s eyes as they flit up to your study buddy but quickly meet your own. He darts them away, caught. You wonder, however, if your middling grade has something to do with that. Oh well, you won’t regret doing the right thing.
As you open your laptop, an email pops up in the corner. ‘On Behalf of Dean R. Drysdale’. You click on it before you can stop yourself. You’re holding your breath. You read it slowly.
‘Schedule a follow up for the dean’s decision’.
What? That’s not an answer. Fuck. Why can’t they just put it right there? Yes or no. You have to stop yourself from slamming your laptop shut. You grab your quiz and rest it over your keyboard. You look over at Brownie, she stares at the paper in her hand. She got an A, as always.
“Good job,” you whisper.
“Mmm, yeah,” she returns as she drops the quiz onto her folding desk. “He’s a good teacher…”
“Sure,” you accept dryly.
She glances at you but says nothing. You hate to be sharp with her but it’s pretty obvious what’s going on. You’re just smart enough to know to be cautious. You can only be there for her when she needs you. It would be too risky to do anything else. And not fair to Brownie, that man could destroy her career. You’ve been her, you just hope she finds her way out.
“Alright, let’s get started,” Barber calls out, quieting the class, “it seems we need a lot of review on case law.”
💮
The hour is unexpected but you don’t think much of it. A dean is busier than most and you can’t help but imagine that Drysdale is even less elated to be meeting at such an off-time. Seven in the evening on a Friday is prime time, even for those outside the coed population.
You show up to an empty office. Sienna is gone, the place desolate. The vibe is off. Something about it reminds you of another meeting. No, this isn’t Hansen. Still, you’re on edge, vigilant as you approach the dean’s door, an amber glow through the frosted glass.
You knock and cross one arm over your chest, clutching your upper arm. You sway as you wait. Deja vu paralyses you on the spot. It can’t be. It can’t happen twice. This is about the scholarship.
The door opens and Drysdale steps back as he gives a flippant greeting, “come in.”
He has a glass in hand, a dark brown liquid in marbled crystal. He sips as the door falls open. You step inside and look around the office, the framed degree behind his chair and the several photographs placed around them; a previous dean with his imperious features, and a large house with a rustic landscape crowded around it. You hover at the threshold.
“Close the door,” he sits heavily, “these old buildings are drafty as–” he stops himself and smirks.
He drains the last of his drink, liquor by your measure, and puts it on the marble coaster. You shut the door and sit, just like last time. You can’t help but be slightly irked to think he brought you all the way here to issue you a rejection.
“So, top three,” he points a finger gun at you as he slumps in the same lackadaisical way, “Flora… you’re a star. Shining reviews. Can’t say my professors ever said anything nice about me but you… you even got Hansen singing your praises.”
“Oh,” you utter.
“I’ve known him a while. We were in the same frat, you know? He was a senior when I was a freshman, hazed me real good but look how things turned out,” he leans an elbow on the armrest and cradles his chin. He watches you. “All these years and I never heard him say anything nice about a fucking student.”
You’re put off by the obscenity. Further, upended by his history with Lloyd. What does that have to do with anything?
“You know, he’s all about self-discipline but you get a few scotches down his gullet and he’s like an open book. Also…” he raises a finger, “leaves his phone unlocked.”
You try not to let that suspicion turn to panic. He can’t know. Even if he did, it’s not your fault. He should be talking with Hansen, not you. He’s the one abusing his position.
“You let him fuck you in his car,” he sits up and laughs, his hand on his stomach, “looking at you, I never would’ve guessed.”
“What? How–”
“I mean, he was hitting it from quite the angle so I don’t blame you for not noticing the phone in his front pocket…”
“No.”
“Yes,” he cackles. “Listen, sweetie, it’s not the first time it’s happened. Some girls just don’t have anything else to offer, so who am I to be mad if they use what they got.”
“I’m not– I’m not like that. He made me–”
“Oh, I’m sure the promise of an A plus helped,” he scoffs as he lets his hand drift down his stomach, “so what can a scholarship get me?”
He gropes himself through his russet coloured pants. Your throat constricts as you clutch your purse tight in your lap. You’re rigid, alight in horror and shame. Of course Lloyd didn’t walk away without something.
“I’ve waited twenty years for this,” he plants his feet.
“No, I’m not– I’m not doing this again.”
You stand and Drysdale rips his hand away from his crotch, snapping his fingers, “with that video, I could take you to the review board and have you kicked out. Not only that, all your credits would be invalidated.”
You swallow and wince. No, this can’t be happening. Again. You’re stronger than this. You’re worth more than these men’s dicks.
“So, sweetie pie,” he reaches forward and takes his phone off his desk, “we’re gonna make a nice little video for Hansen and show him how it’s really done.”
You shudder and hug yourself, “I…” your throat is dry, your heart hollow. What other choice do you have? You’ll lose everything. “I’ll do it, but no video. Please.”
“My rules. I am the dean and you are… the slutty coed.” He tuts, “mmm, classic Pornhub fodder.” He taps the screen of his phone, “let’s go. Get your clothes off.”
He aims the lens at you. You look at the floor. You can’t move.
“Please, turn it off.”
“Get your fucking clothes off,” he repeats, “I want to remind that fuckface what he’s missing out on.”
You dig your nails into the back of your arms then let go. You keep your head down as you lift the strap of your purse over your head and throw it in the chair behind you. You unzip your coat and shrug it off. The room rings in your ear and blurs in your vision. Your breaths are shallow and painful. Your skin is buzzing.
Your coat falls and you pull down the straps of the denim dress you wear over a flowered blouse. You shimmy it past your waist and peek up for just a minute. Drysdale bites his thumb as he records you.
You quickly tear away your gaze and continue. You unbutton the blouse and turn as you fight to free your wrists from the cuffs. Goosebumps speckle over your skin. You close your eyes and ball your hands before pushing your fingers wide. You touch the top of your stockings.
“You can leave those on, cheeks.”
You gulp and retract your hands. You pause and turn back to face the desk.
“Tits out, ass out, go on.”
No wonder he’s tight with Lloyd. Birds of a feather. You reach back to undo your bra and sling it onto the chair. You hook your thumbs in your panties and step out of them.
“I always liked an extra helping,” Drysdale taunts, “her cups overfloweth… is that Shakespeare?”
You don’t answer. You fight the urge to hide behind your arms. You raise your head. You have a morsel of dignity left in you.
“Come here,” he demands, “I wanna fuck those tits.”
You cringe but obey. If Lloyd taught you anything it was to just get it over with. You round the desk as he opens his fly. He pulls himself out above the zipper, playing with himself, rolling his thumb over his tip as he growls.
“Knees, baby, I’m sure you know the drill,” he snickers. You get down as he wiggles his dick in your direction, “push those things together.” You grab your chest and smush it together. He taps your tits with his tip and laughs, enjoying his mocking.
He guides himself down under your tits and slides between. He cups a hand around yours as he refocuses the phone on you. He rocks the chair back, moving his pelvis as he slowly starts to thrust. He groans at the friction. You clench your jaw tight, dreaming of biting off the end of his overinflated worm.
His breath hitches as he fucks faster, the bottom of his wolly sweater rolling up his muscles stomach. You could just punch him right there. You could grab him by his balls and twist. No, that would only assure you of your scholarly doom.
“Look at me,” he demands.
You snap your eyes open as he shoves the phone in your face. You shy away but he keeps fucking, turning the lens down towards your tits. He gives a breathy laugh and it trickles into a moan. Weak and pathetic.
“Shit, yeah, that’s good,” he groans, “give it a kiss, baby.”
You grit back your disgust. You bend your neck and kiss his tip as it pokes through.
“With tongue.”
You force your tongue out as his tip pops up again and you swirl around it, planting a sloppy kiss on the salty flesh. He twitches and hisses. He pulls his hand away from yours and grips the chair.
“That’s good, get up,” he snarls, “turn around.”
You suck in a chestful of air and do as he says. You get to your feet and turn away. He grabs your hips and rolls closer.
“Bend over.”
You bend and rest your elbows on the edge of the desk. He angles you down into his lap, your body stretched between the two. He rubs his dick against your ass, once more tapping. He kneads the flesh. You shake your head as he tilts you further down.
He prods at your cunt and you can’t help but clench. He pushes against your entrance, tight and burning as he grunts, bulling his way past the resistance with a slap against your thigh. He latches onto your hip and pulls you down another inch.
“It’s all you. You just gotta fuck that scholarship outta me.”
You bite your lip and force yourself to take him. You hip down until you reach your limit but before you can pull back up, he grabs on and holds you in place.
“More.”
You sink your teeth in deeper, urging yourself lower until it’s unbearable. You take him in fully and let out a shaky breath through your nose. You raise your ass as he lets you go. He lets out a raspy noise and you repeat the motion. You keep your motion mechanical and slow, trying to adjust.
“Faster. I wanna see you jiggle.”
You roll your eyes and claw at your arm, arms crossed over the desk as you rock your weight over him. The flesh claps loudly as his chair squeaks with each descent. He groans and gulps, hand wandering over your flesh, along your thighs, across your ass, up your back.
“Fuck, look at her go,” he snarks, “you work that dick. Just like that.”
You close your eyes and let the scowl mar your features. You speed up. He’s almost there. You can feel the tension, you can hear it in his voice.
“Ah,” he pinches you meanly, “stop!”
You try to keep going but he pushes you off of him. He growls and the chair jars as he sits up. You puff and peek around your shoulder at him.
“I’m cumming in your fucking mouth,” he cradles his balls, half-keeled over. “Open the fuck up before I blow–”
You get back to your knees and glare at him. You won’t falter. You have nothing over these men but that. You lean your head back and open your mouth. He lets himself go and holds the camera over you.
“Well, not gonna finish itself.”
You grab him, roughly, and he grunts. A warning. You ease up and stroke him, placing your mouth by his tip.
“Look into the camera, cheeks.”
You glare at the camera, you hope it can catch the sheer loathing radiating from you. You stroke him, squeezing harder and harder until he spasms and mewls. He spurts all over, missing your mouth and streaking up the bridge of your noises and across your brow, a few strings over your cheek.
He gasps and clings to the chair as if he might slip out of it, the camera drooping with his arm. You let him go and wipe your slimy hand. You stand and snatch a tissue from the box on his desk and wipe the mess from your face. His heavy breaths fill the silence.
“Can I go?” You ask flatly.
“I got nothing else for you,” he spits out.
You refuse to look at him as you dress. He chuckles. You fight not to turn around and throw every single thing on his desk at him. You hate him. You hate Lloyd. But more, you hate yourself.
“Congratulations,” he says as you pick up your purse, “did I mention, paperwork went through yesterday.”
You whip around and stare at him. You quake with anger, eyes hot with unspent tears.
“Hey, even I got deadlines. Had to make the call last week.”
You take a step back. What the fuck? You stumble away, ready to scream, ready to strangle this man. For now, you’ll settle for never having to see him again.

Cracks knuckles.
Alright team. Let's talk the next few months.
The short version is I'm going to have a basic version for v0.3 out by mid-September. The current plan is to finish work on it through June, finish privately testing it by mid-August, and then do a closed playtest with Patreon supporters through the rest of August. I'll make any further adjustments, playtest one more round if needed, and then throw it out to The People!
This is going to be a more compact initial release than previous versions. The version of the game to release will be through about level 21 (out of 100 levels). Unlike V0.2, though, it will be playable at release - no waiting to learn how to make enemies. There are several reasons for this smaller release, but the most important is changeability: this way, instead of needing full years to adjust everything I've made if something about the base game is completely off course, it'll only take a month or so. Quicker turnaround for adjustments!
I'll be sitting down to do a sort of psuedo-Q&A on Friday, June 28 on my Twitch at 7 PM EST- playing some Kingdom Hearts, answering questions as they come up, talking about what I've been up to and longer-term plans. If there's anything in this post that you don't understand or want elaboration on, send an ask, and I'll answer it on that stream!
Some of the big changes you can expect in V0.3, under a cut for brevity (some of the details and names may be subject to change still!):
Combat Stats. You know, in retrospect, there was no good reason to not use KH's existing ATK/DEF/MAG stats and just directly translate abilities using them. The new version has the actual stats used in KH games connected to the more roleplay-oriented Stats from previous versions - e.g. ATK being connected to Body - but ultimately separated in terms of usage.
Sword, Shield, Staff. This will appear in very basic form in this version, to be elaborated on once the core game has been adequately playtested. I've wanted to include the chance to "choose your path" since day 1, but could never find a way to integrate it; the addition of Combat Stats provided a clean opportunity to try it out!
Dice. This was something that got brought up relatively early on in the Discord, but at the time I didn't have the experience to handle it. Now I do! Attacks have a more standardized pattern and there's no longer going to be a situation where you can hit and do 0 damage. Not unless you intentionally do some really bad numbers. I can't stop you from that.
Job Classes -> Job Paths. There was a consistent issue in the first two versions, where the intent of job classes - to be loose guidelines rather than strict classes, with lots of mixing and matching - was unclear. They've been re-contextualized as sets of Abilities, with one feature being a prerequisite to the next. My hope is that this will allow people to view them closer to as intended, on top of some other interesting things that have opened up to do with them.
MP. I really wanted to stick to KH1-style MP because I love the low numbers and wanted so badly to make them work. But ultimately, the MP numbers from KH2 and KH3 were easier to deal with. There's just no #/5 equivalent to 12/100.
Hordes. Yes I've reworked them again. I'm so happy with them this time though!! I think I finally struck a balance to make it both quick and large. Hopefully. Playtesting permits.
Memories. Will finally be a full part of the game! There'll be ~5 options minimum at time of initial publishing. I'd REALLY like to get it up to 7 for that sweet sweet number symbolism, but that won't be a priority for this initial release.
Leveling. There will be a way to calculate the EXP for level ups, and that leveling is simpler to understand.
And other stuff! Some of it in too early stages to talk about for this release, some of it is just formatting, some of it is hard to explain quickly.
I will not be updating monthly, because after trying to make myself do that for several years now, I'm forced to accept that I'm not capable of doing so on a for-fun project. But I will make a concerted effort to be more present here and to keep everyone appraised of the Big milestones, like when I open up playtesting for patrons.
Thank you all so much for your patience, as always! <3

With its world-class training institutes and state-of-the-art facilities, Delhi offers aspiring pilots an opportunity like no other. But with so many options available, how do you choose the best pilot training institute in Delhi? Don't worry - we've got you covered! In this blog post, we will guide you through the eligibility criteria, duration of training, required exams, and most importantly, introduce you to the best pilot training institute in Delhi - CEA Aviation. So fasten your seatbelts and get ready for an exciting journey into the world of aviation!
Eligibility for Pilot Training In Delhi
To embark on the journey of becoming a pilot, there are certain eligibility criteria that you need to fulfill. You must be at least 17 years old to begin your pilot training in Delhi. This ensures that you have reached the legal age required for obtaining a private pilot license.
In addition to the age requirement, aspiring pilots must have completed their higher secondary education or equivalent, with physics and mathematics as subjects. These subjects form the foundation of aviation theory and understanding them is crucial for successful pilot training.
Furthermore, candidates need to possess a Class-I medical certificate issued by an authorized aviation medical examiner. This comprehensive medical examination assesses various aspects such as vision, hearing, cardiovascular health, and overall physical fitness.
Apart from these prerequisites, having good communication skills and a strong command of the English language is essential since it is widely used in aviation communication globally.
Remember that each flight school or institute may have its own specific eligibility requirements. It's important to thoroughly research and understand the prerequisites before applying for any pilot training program in Delhi.
Duration of Pilot Training In Delhi
When it comes to pursuing a career in aviation, pilot training is a crucial step. Many aspiring pilots dream of flying high in the skies and making a mark in the aviation industry. If you are considering pilot training in Delhi, one important aspect to consider is the duration of the course. The duration of pilot training can vary depending on various factors such as the type of license you want to obtain (private or commercial), your availability for training, and your dedication towards completing the course. Generally, pilot training programs can range from several months to a couple of years.
In Delhi, there are institutes that offer comprehensive pilot training courses designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary for flying an aircraft safely. These courses typically cover subjects like meteorology, navigation, flight planning, aerodynamics, communication procedures, and aircraft systems.
During the initial stages of pilot training, students undergo ground school where they learn about aviation regulations and principles. They also have simulator sessions to practice their skills before taking actual flights. Once they have gained sufficient knowledge and experience through these initial phases, they progress to flying actual aircraft under the guidance of experienced instructors.
It's worth noting that while some individuals may complete their pilot training within a shorter period by opting for full-time courses or intensive programs; others may choose part-time options that allow them more flexibility but extend their overall duration.
Ultimately, the duration of your pilot training will depend on factors unique to you including your commitment level, time availability, and previous aviation experience if any.
Nevertheless, it’s important not only to focus solely on completing your program quickly, but also strive for excellence in understanding all aspects related to piloting an aircraft.
As they say, "the sky's the limit" when it comes to pilot training in Delhi!
Which age is best for pilot training in Delhi?
This is a common question among aspiring pilots. While there is no specific age limit for starting pilot training, it is recommended to begin your training at a younger age.
Many aviation academies and institutes in Delhi offer pilot training courses for individuals above the age of 17. The reason why starting young is beneficial lies in the fact that it allows more time for gaining experience and mastering the necessary skills required to become a successful pilot.
Starting your pilot training at an early age also gives you ample time to accumulate flight hours, which are crucial for obtaining higher-level licenses and certifications. Additionally, younger individuals tend to have better adaptability and learning capabilities, making it easier for them to grasp complex concepts related to flying.
However, this doesn't mean that older individuals cannot pursue their dreams of becoming pilots. Many people choose to change careers or follow their passion later in life. As long as you meet the eligibility criteria set by aviation authorities and possess good physical health, you can begin your pilot training journey at any age.
The best age for pilot training depends on individual circumstances and goals. It's important to consider factors like personal motivation, financial resources, and commitment before embarking on this fulfilling career path.
Which exam is required for pilot training?
To pursue a career in aviation and become a pilot, aspiring candidates need to clear certain exams that are mandatory for pilot training. These exams assess the candidate's knowledge, aptitude, and suitability for flying an aircraft. One of the primary exams required for pilot training is the written examination conducted by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in India.
The DGCA exam consists of multiple-choice questions covering various subjects such as air regulations, meteorology, navigation, aircraft systems, and general aviation knowledge. It tests the candidate's understanding of these concepts and their ability to apply them in real-life scenarios. Clearing this exam is essential to proceed further in pilot training.
Apart from the DGCA exam, there may be additional entrance tests or interviews conducted by individual flight schools or institutions offering pilot training programs. These assessments aim to evaluate a candidate's overall abilities including their communication skills, problem-solving capabilities, and decision-making aptitude.
It is important for aspiring pilots to prepare diligently for these exams through proper study materials and guidance from experienced instructors. Gaining thorough knowledge about aviation-related topics along with regular practice will increase your chances of success in clearing these examinations.
Remember that successfully passing these exams is just one step towards becoming a licensed pilot. The journey doesn't end here; it opens doors to practical flight training where you'll gain hands-on experience under professional guidance. So buckle up! Prepare well and ace those examinations on your way to soaring high as a skilled aviator!

One of the key aspects is the reputation and track record of the institute. Look for an institute that has a proven history of producing successful pilots who have gone on to have successful careers in aviation.

Melissa couldn't believe she was doing this.
If anyone found out that in her spare time, she'd taken to branching out of her circle, in an attempted cooking class with strangers as some form of release, she was sure she'd never live it down. In all honesty, her therapist Carla had been on at her to attempt to do more with her life than the persistent need to work. Melissa wasn't sure if it was because it'd been bred into her since she was a child, but she worked like a damn mule horse.
This was meant to lighten the spirit, or whatever.
The buzz around the room had her checking over her shoulder as she looked at the other partners preparing and setting up their stations. It was amusing, really, how she seemed to dive headfirst into everything, regardless of the potential pitfalls that might accompany it. That had been the recent outcome of her transgressions. Yet, Melissa couldn't deny that it'd been hard, she was always planning. Always preparing.
Tonight was just about being present outside of paperwork and intermediaries.
Her closest friends were strangers, and she felt conflicted about most people. Which meant that trust had never been on the table, not for a long time. She found it in people like Ayaz, Johnathan, Benjamin, and Vidal.
But all related back to work, it was a sad sight, truly.
Still, having arrived late, part of Melissa had hoped she wouldn't be afforded a partner. Socialising was fine with those she deemed appropriate company but outside of that, she found little conversation to be had with those outside of their world. However, when she heard the approaching feet and her name across the room, she stiffened. She hadn't turned to look, but dread curled into her stomach as she sighed.
"Great," she muttered, before quickly eating her words.
A knowing smile tugged at her lips, eyes finding the Shiraz before they settled upon the semi-familiar face of blonde hair, and starling blue eyes. Not a face she'd forget easily. Cece Hathaway. Clearly, Cece was prepared for the evening ahead of time, unlike Melissa who'd turned up with the basics that had been listed. Albeit, the best products there were to offer, in true Melissa Lin fashion.
"How could I forget," she offered. "I never forget a woman so well dressed. Not in a man's world, anyway."
Melissa actually remembered that particular brunch, for once there had been an easy conversation, it had flowed like a smooth river. Point A to point B with no issues. In all honesty, she probably should've followed up. But London was known for dragging people into the never-ending cycle of work and nothing else. "Cece, it's good to see you again," Melissa offered one of her cold smiles, unsure if she knew what warmth looked like anymore.
Still, she moved over to make space for the other woman.
"I see you came prepared, and I'm glad you did." She shot another glance around the room. "They all seem a little serious to you for a beginners class?"
The instructor – or rather, the head chef, as he preferred to be called from the looks of the pride he held as he spoke to the room– captured Melissa's attention with a snap. The way the room fell silent reminded her a little too much of people's reactions to Rutherford's elite when they walked into the room. Her brows pulled together with a lick of confusion, as she shot a side glance to Cece.
Last year's classes? Melissa's face twisted into one of bewildered bemusement. She hadn't expected there to be prerequisites for a beginner's class. This was not a beginner's class. "Popcorn sounds good right about now," Melissa remarked with a chuckle, raising her glass in a silent toast. "With wine in hand, they'll be lucky the kitchen doesn't go up in flames?"
@msmelissalin Event: A Beginner Advanced Baking Class: Chocolate Soufflé Dated: 20th of March, 2024 Location: The Avenue Cookery School, Fulham
She was turning over new leaves. Yes, since getting back home to London, Cece had decided, a new year a new Cece. What did she have on the cards tonight? A cooking class. She was finally going to make Adam his favorite dessert: Chocolate Soufflé. Though, it did seem a bit ambitious for a beginner class, but she was sure the instructor wouldn't give them anything they couldn't handle. "Hi, hello! I'm here for the Chocolate Please Don't Deflate class." She let out a tiny chortle. That had been a good one. Alas, it got lost on whoever was checking her in, "Bench Six, you'll be cooking with Melissa tonight." A partner? How jolly. She never liked to drink alone and she'd brought an entire bottle of Shiraz with her, "Thank you."
After walking over to her bench, she started setting up, wanting to make sure everything was ready and poured for when her partner showed up. She'd been told drinking would be okay. She was going to need it to. With all this recent blackmail business she needed an out and tonight that was a nice oak-y red and a hopefully sturdy soufflé. Humming to herself, Cece didn't realise that her partner had shown up till, she was twirling around with two glasses in hand. "Oh perfect this is for you!" Wait a second. She knew this woman. Melissa Lin. Sure, she'd heard about her dealings, but she wasn't talking about that. "Oh, it's Melissa right? I'm not sure if you remember me, but you joined me for brunch one afternoon. We had a delightful conversation about Diors latest line.."
Snap, snap. She found her eyes widening as the instructor (correction: head chef) walked into the room and got their attention with the snap of his fingers (not exactly the most polite---) She was snapped back into silence. "Welcome Chefs," cute, "today, we will build upon the lessons from last year and venture into the realm of mastering the infamous chocolate Soufflé…" wait.. last year's classes. Was there pre-reqs to beginners classes nowadays? Pulling a face, Cece leaned in closer to Melissa, "well I don't know about you, but the last thing I cooked successfully was microwave popcorn, so this should be.. fun." At least there was wine.

My biggest issue with this article is that it completely bypasses the issue of partisanship, particularly in America, and basically amounts to "focus on the heartland and make more alliances". It ignores the issues of race and gender and I'm rather irritated by it, even though I don't really disagree with it.
In a recent address at Ditchley Park, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair described today’s moment as a global inflection point, a time akin to the early post-World War II years or after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, when Western nations had to rethink and remake our policies both foreign and domestic.
In Blair’s words: “We need a new plan, a way of looking at the world, to make sense of it and how best to pursue the advancement of its people…Western democracies need a new project that gives direction, inspires hope, and is a credible explanation of the way the world is changing and how we succeed within it.”
He is right. We do need a new plan.
We need to define and enlist allies in a shared global agenda to strengthen our national economies and democracies. To equip ourselves with the economic strength and political will to maintain a democratic rules-based order while checking authoritarian interests. In this new moment of clarity and confrontation, we must demonstrate that our democratic systems deliver more in the form of both political freedoms and economic opportunity than strongman states—states that foster corruption at home, destroy basic rights, build dependency, and employ tools of coercion abroad.
We must also be honest about our own domestic challenges. In the United States, United Kingdom, and across Europe, faltering heartland regions and their alienated, angry, and anxious residents are a prime driver of populist movements, particularly anti-democratic right-wing variants. These support a new nativism and advocate retreat from the international community. They are movements that support the rise of an authoritarian to “fix things.” Meeting these internal threats to our own democracies is a prerequisite for confronting the authoritarian challenge abroad.
Today’s urgent challenge differs from earlier inflection points. This is because yawning economic inequalities within Western democracies are today a primary driver of polarizing populist movements, fueling distrust and seeding instability in our democratic governance systems. The wealthy few reap more, the middle class is hollowing out, and the poor bear the brunt of change, whether from globalization, climate change, or soaring inflation and cost of living.
Particularly dangerous are the economic gaps between residents of thriving global city regions and the increasingly angry, alienated residents of communities left behind by economic change. Arguably the implications of the growing divide were not fully grasped by Tony Blair in the United Kingdom or a succession of U.S. leaders over the last three decades. But the evidence of this divide has been growing for years, from the ailing factory towns of the American Midwest to the hollowed industrial centers of England’s North. Many of those living in regions experiencing relative economic decline responded to these conditions with support for anti-democratic populists, those who threatened to dismantle democratic governments from within.
During the last global inflection point Blair mentions in his Ditchley address—what philosopher and economist Francis Fukuyama billed the “end of history”—the Berlin Wall fell, the Cold War ended, and we saw the rise and opening to the West of both China and Russia (or so we thought). It seemed for an historical moment as if all nations could work together to nurture economic opportunity and freedom across the globe.
Later with the United States and many other nations reeling from the fallout of the Great Recession and the global financial crisis, the election of President Barack Obama was embraced around the world, suggesting renewed hope that the United States under his leadership could join with allies to again constructively to address many emerging challenges. Given the high expectations among many, particularly in Europe, it seemed possible that the time was right to forge new agreements and protocols on how we would work together to solve shared and global challenges around big topics: international security, climate change, terrorism, the stability of the financial and trading systems, health and education, civil and women’s rights, and the free flow of information.
But Obama got politically dragged down at home and found few kindred spirits among leaders abroad, including in Europe. The economic freefall of the working class, combined with the apparent exoneration of the global financial elite, contributed to public resentments and the rise of populist movements threatening democracy in countries of the West. Ultimately, Obama’s foreign policy contributed to our current weaknesses with China, Syria, and other countries, as it looked like a further retreat from U.S. leadership in global system.
As a result, a rising China ended up dashing Western hopes it would integrate with the West and democratize, as evidence has grown that not only was it not really joining in Western norms and our economic and political order, while economically benefitting from it, but rather had designs on how to supplant them. Finally, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine put an exclamation point on the obliterated Western hopes that it too could be trusted to join the family of nations.
Today it is increasingly clear that we are not going to forge new universal global agreements about how best to “run the world.” The postwar global institutions are being weakened in part by countries that do not want to play by these rules and in part by populists at home. These include Donald Trump, along with Boris Johnson until his recent comeuppance in Britain, Marine Le Pen in France, and now Georgia Meloni in Italy, who all wish to undermine these rules and the influence of the “globalists.”
And we cannot use the old playbooks to win the new competition. In this new pitched battle, containment—the strategy that won the Cold War—is not an option. As Blair points out, unlike prior inflection points, today the “East is on par with the West” in terms of economic clout. China is too big, influential, and a tightly integrated part of the global economy and polity to simply isolate it and wait for the inevitable collapse.
Today’s contest can only be won by strengthening the hand of democracies and free people, strengthening the influence and numbers of those who want to play by an open rules-based and freedom-valuing regime, and enlisting in the struggle and linking arms with countries on the fence between the two systems, by offering a better and more attractive alternative.
Blair offers a similar diagnosis, but his proposed remedies are not up to the ambition of his call for a new “plan” for the West. He looks chiefly to the power of new and emerging technologies to solve a host of global challenges from raising living standards to improving health care to tackling climate change. Technology drives progress, but this is a very “top-down” approach, an expectation that miracle technologies from on high will save us all. We maintain that the work needs to begin from the ground up.
We propose to address the root causes of anti-democratic movements at home and abroad, and a new strategic foundation for democratic strength and unity abroad.
First, to heal our politics at home and douse the embers of anxiety and resentment that can be easily fanned to engulf our democracies, we must forge a more broadly shared economic condition. This entails closing yawning economic opportunity gaps that feed frustration, encourage nostalgia, and pull back from international collaboration. Part of this objective must be to empower as well as to rebuild the communities that have missed out. Everyone needs a stake if these local and global challenges are to be met, and everyone needs to feel in control of their own future.
It starts locally with national leaders helping to catalyze and support locally owned, operated, and governed economic rejuvenation efforts. Democracy and market economies thrive when more people have more opportunity to contribute and reap the benefits. The project for leaders of Western democracies is to get busy learning how to listen to, respect, connect with, and deliver for the working classes, particularly in the politically potent industrial heartland regions that are hotbeds of resentment and unrest.
Closing economic divides is also an urgent international project. As we are learning in our initiative to accelerate economic change in industrial regions, there is a convergence of interest and shared urgency in closing economic gulfs for the political benefits of social and political “peace” and cohesion. We need to take “what works” locally and spread and share effective approaches on a grander scale and with our allies. As international partners, we can learn from and assist each other in how to do this work well.
As we have documented, there are paths to new prosperity among the similarly situated industrial regions of the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe, including manufacturing communities that have lost their economic anchors. We have learned that communities that have turned an economic corner build on their identity, who they are, what they make and produce, but take it into the future and diversify. They leverage the assets they have, and fashion and execute their own strategic vision and blueprint for economic change.
Some innovate and seed new businesses in emerging sectors by leveraging universities and research institutions. Others become the most highly trained and best educated communities. Some embrace a globalized world and build out export industries, fashion new international entanglements, and welcome new immigrants. Still others grow their own green and blue sustainable economies based on clean energy and smart water solutions. Other community success paths are found by building on unique history, arts and cultural assets, or natural locations on the water or in the mountains, or otherwise developing community amenities that offer a rich quality of life and place.
Perhaps more important is what we have learned about how local and national leaders can best aid this transformation. First by meeting heartland residents with respect, understanding, and seeing things as residents of struggling regions do: the degraded downtowns, the loss of young people, the disappearance of important institutions. By not patronizing residents, talking down to them, or telling them they need to change or what they need to do. Change cannot be “done to” community residents. A new vision for the future and plan to get there must be locally owned and operated.
This work is an important priority for the West, but it has mostly to do with the domestic challenge of preserving our own democracy from threats within. We also need a new foreign policy and a more aggressive and effective international development, trade, investment, and engagement agenda to counter authoritarians and strengthen the hand of the democratic alliance.
A robust “ally-shoring” plan is the lead element of this new affirmative foreign policy. One that works to strengthen our Western economies, shore up and expand our alliances, and make a winning offer to “on-the-fence” countries to work and benefit with us versus the corrupting and dependency building development assistance “offers” emanating from China in particular. Ally-shoring also mitigates supply chain dependencies by limiting exposure of critical supply chains, where we do not want to be over-reliant on rogue regimes, open to espionage and piracy, or to have our dependencies used as a tool of political coercion. Today we see clearly how dependencies on Russia’s oil, gas, and grain, and China’s use of everything from personal protective equipment to critical minerals, both threaten consumers and markets.
A new alliance clearly needs to start with democracies around the world that want to work together and strengthen an open and free rules-based world order, as well as our economies, and by extension our political and (when needed) military influence. President Joe Biden has begun to try and jumpstart this type of effort with his series of democracy summits.
While starting with democracies, as Ash Jain and Matthew Kroenig argue in their recent excellent proposal for new trade strategy for democracies, we also need to include near-democracies, such as Vietnam, that are major economic partners, that we want to entice to move more in our direction, and that will agree to certain clear norms for open rules-based economic relations and development. We also need lots of partners in the developing world if we are to keep the collective benefits of highly efficient global supply chains, including those implicating lower cost producers. These countries benefit in turn through economic growth, rising living standards, and movement up the value-added food chain.
These two paths—revitalizing our industrial heartlands and ally-shoring—will not solve all our world’s problems, but they are the right place to start. This is the way that our democratic values and institutions must save the day (again). As Blair rightly says, this is a political and economic crossroads for the world order and perhaps especially for those countries who after the end of the Cold War thought that these moments were behind us. We thought that history—at least in that sense—was at an end. But as real and proxy wars rage on, it is clear it is not.
As Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson remind us, both global and domestic democracies are on a “narrow path” and the future is not guaranteed, neither at home nor throughout the world. Which is why we in the West need a new plan.

i am not reblogging this post from OP (posted 2 days ago, with 4,400 notes and counting) because i know that often people are just making their own vent posts on their blogs and maybe don’t expect them to circulate widely outside of their small tumblr circle! and i don’t mean to like, jump on someone who is just commenting on something and then going on with their life. but i feel like i keep seeing versions of this sentiment on leftist twitter too and i really think it is a gross misrepresentation of the bill that passed earlier this month - which is due in part to social media’s intense focus on the “stimulus check” part of the bill. but the bill was not called “the stimulus check” act! it was called “The American Rescue Plan” and it was specifically geared towards providing desperately-needed relief to the American middle & working classes. the $1400 direct payments to individuals was just one small portion of the bill. here are the far more important parts:
in addition to receiving a $1400 direct payment themselves, individuals with children receive an additional $1400 check for each dependent
college students who are still listed as dependents on their parents’ tax forms (typically so they can retain health insurance benefits under the ACA) can more easily claim stimulus money - which is huge for college kids who may be helping to financially support immediate or extended family members
unemployment benefits have been extended from March 31, 2021 (their original expiration date) to September 6, 2021
unemployment benefits will be supplemented with a $300 weekly payment (ie $300 on top of what people are receiving from their state government)
unemployment benefits received in 2020-21 are tax-exempt (a retroactive change that means people who are unemployed won’t receive a surprise tax bill counting their unemployment money as “income”)
a substantial tax credit for employers who offer paid sick leave and paid family leave benefits (ie creating a direct incentive for employers to authorize emergency paid leave)
15% increase in food stamp benefits and extension of eligibility
child and family tax credit benefits!!!! this is the part that people are describing as one of the most significant anti-poverty initiatives in American history. families are eligible for a tax credit of $3600 for each child under the age of 6 and $3000 for each child between 6-18. people can also claim a child and dependent care credit with a maximum benefit of $4000 for one eligible dependent and up to $8000 for two or more. it also expands the earned income tax credit and lowers the age limit to 19. dems also pushed to get at least 50% of the tax credit money to people this year instead of making them wait for their 2021 tax return. this calculator allows you to calculate how much families will receive. if you make $50,000 a year and have four children, you will receive $13,200 through the child tax credit alone, paid out in monthly payments of $1,100 from July to December 2021 + an additional $6,600 lump-sum payment when you file your 2021 tax return early next year. there are also some additional dependent-related tax credits things that I don’t fully understand but that seem to indicate people are eligible for even more money.
forgiven student loan debt is made tax-free (a necessary prerequisite for future efforts to cancel/forgive student loan debt)
huge expansion of grant benefits to small businesses, including $28.6 billion specifically for bars and restaurants; $15 billion for low-interest, long-term replayment emergency disaster loans; and $7 billion more for the paycheck protection program (which can only be used on payroll expenses and makes it possible for small businesses to keep workers on payroll even if they are operating at lower capacity). you can describe this as “for the economy only” if you want, but I sure feel like it will alleviate a whole lot of human suffering by allowing people to keep their jobs & paychecks even if their workplaces remain partially shut down. my dad is a small business owner and has been able to keep his entire staff on payroll through the entire pandemic. the bill also includes billions for airlines and concert venues, which will again! means people won’t lose their jobs!! plus it allocates $175 million to fund a Community Navigator Program that reaches out to eligible businesses and helps guide them through the application process—ie making it possible for small businesses to actually take receive these benefits.
$350 billion to state, local, and tribal governments
$130 billion for K-12 schools to improve ventilation, reduce class sizes, purchase PPE for employees and students, and hire support staff; of this money, 20% must be dedicated to programs designed to counteract “learning loss” from students who missed school during the pandemic
$40 billion for colleges and universities, at least $20 billion of which must go to emergency grants to students (our university has been giving regular emergency grants throughout the pandemic to students to help cover rent, unexpected medical expenses, costs related to family emergencies or lost family income, tuition bills that they suddenly can’t pay, fees associated with wifi or purchasing tech equipment so they can learn virtually)
a HUGE amount of money four housing benefits!!!! i keep seeing people yelling about how $1400 won’t cover their rent but THAT’S WHAT THE RENTAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS ARE FOR. $21.6 billion in rent and utility assistance, paid directly to states and local governments so they can disburse it to eligible households!!! plus $5 billion to Section 8 housing (which “must go to those who are or were recently homeless, as well as individuals who are escaping from domestic violence, sexual assualt, or human trafficking”).
$5 billion to support state and local programs for homeless and at-risk individuals (can be used for rental assistance, homelessness prevention services, and counseling; can also be used to purchase properties that will be turned into permanent shelters or affordable housing for people who are homeless). plus an additional $120 for housing counseling.
$4.5 billion earmarked for a special assistance program that helps low-income households cover costs of heating and cooling and $500 million to cover water costs
$750 million in housing assistance for tribes and native Hawaiians (who are also eligible for other benefits through the rental assistance and direct tribal government grants described above)
and then BILLIONS of dollars to support FEMA, the Veterans Affairs’ healthcare system, the CDC, and state, local, and territorial public health departments for all things related to: COVID testing, contact tracing, vaccine production and distribution, vaccine outreach, PPE, and public health education. this includes (among many, MANY other things), $5.4 billion to the Indian Health Services (division of the Department of Health and Human Services that specifically provides health services to Native people and tribal territories), $200 million for nursing loan repayment programs, $80 million for mental health training, $3.5 billion in block grants specifically geared towards community mental health programs and substance abuse/prevention/treatment programs
$86 billion for a rescue package for pension funds (esp union-sponsored pension funds) that are on the verge of collapse - collectively covering 10.7 million workers.
billions of dollars for public transit programs (and sure, public transit is important to the economy, but access to regular, reliable, affordable, and safe public transit is HUGELY important to human health and well-being! it is how many people esp in urban areas access grocery stores, health care, their jobs, childcare facilities, etc.
$10.4 billion for agriculture, of which $5 billion is specifically earmarked for socially disadvantaged farmworkers. to quote wikipedia: “Experts identified the relief bill as the single most important piece of legislation for African-American framers since the Civil Rights Act of 1964.”
tons of money to fund 100% of premiums for COBRA (health insurance for people who have unexpectedly lost or had to leave their jobs) through October 2021. COBRA is hella expensive and experts estimate that 2.2 million people will need to enroll for COBRA benefits in 2021. there are also various provisions that expand Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (a program targeted at uninsured children in families who don’t qualify for Medicaid but may not be able to afford adequate healthcare coverage. it also fixes some things with the ACA that could’ve led to people getting surprise bills due to fluctuating income or unexpected changes in employment status.
i am SO OVER the so-called ‘progressive’ rhetoric that no good can ever come from the government, or that all politicians (dems or republicans) are basically the same level of evil and incompetent, or that ~mutual aid~ (ie small payments made between individuals in a community) is the only thing we can count on or should count on in times of crisis. no!!!! fuck no!!!! like mutual aid is great but America is an INSANELY WEALTHY country and it is such bullshit to act like we can’t or shouldn’t expect our government to take care of the people who live here. and i am also just GRAHARRGHGHH at people who are completely disengaged from politics offering their jaded and hyper-cynical hot takes on things they don’t! actually! know! anything! about!!!!!!! and in the process making other people increasingly jaded and cynical about the possibility of electing a government that actually prioritizes the needs & well-being of its citizenry!!!
ugh i’m just TIRED of leftist political cynicism y’all especially when it comes from people who have absolutely no understanding of how much WORK it takes to make huge things like the American Rescue Act happen (work that includes not just the immediate negotiation of the bill but also the years of organizing & voter recruitment work it took to get a narrow democratic majority in the senate so that we could pass things like this!!!!). I’M DONE WITH BEING CYNICAL!!!! i feel, in a totally earnest and unjaded way, that it’s absolutely incredible that dems were able to write, negotiate, and pass this bill, and i feel so so so relieved to be currently living under an administration that is flawed in many ways but is at least actually and earnestly TRYING to reckon with unprecedented “suffering in an actual human scale” (to quote OP) and is even using this crisis as an opportunity to advance major anti-poverty initiatives that will have a LASTING IMPACT on actual human lives. as opposed to our previous administration, which was made up of thousands of people who woke up every single day and asked themselves “what can I do today to further dehumanize & inflict needless suffering upon millions of people?”
PHEW!!!! SORRY!!!! JUST HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS I GUESS!!!!!!!!
#i went into this thinking i was going to be very measured and calm#but actually i'm pretty pissed off#people fire off their hot takes and thousands of people read them and it's so! fucking! infuriating!!!#no government is ever gonna be perfect! certainly ours still has a shit-ton of problems!!!!!#but i hate the 'only option is to fully disengage & say fuck it' attitude#esp when then thousands of people read it and accept it as truth#long post

Owl House rewatch thoughts
* Hard to say from what little we see of her, but I think Luz' mom might have been less worried about her daughter reading fantasy and more about the "multiple incidents of bringing uncontained live animals and explosives to school" thing.
* If Eda considers Luz' Azura book as being only useful as kindling, it means she's not inclined to view human books as something she can make snails on. Considering how unique her portal to the human realm is treated, where did Amity get her Azura books? I've seen people suggest the author travels between realms, but if that were the case, Amity would've been able to get the latest volume from a local store rather than needing to borrow Luz' copy.
* Suggestions for other species that escaped from the Boiling Isles: the platypus and peacock mantis shrimp.
* "Weak nerd arms" ok really identifying with Luz here.
* Really love this take on Chosen One stories. Because yes, there is an appeal in being told you're special, you're unique in the best possible way, but ultimately this is a story about people who aren't "special" so much as outcasts who do their best with the situation they're in. Which is something that a lot more people can aspire to be.
* The fact that this was a set scheme(as the multiple fake maps would indicate) rather than a trap specifically designed for Luz indicates that even people who've spent their lives on the Boiling Isles would be drawn to the idea of being a magical chosen one. I bet Amity's not the only one to have an interest in fantasy literature around here.
* Oh wow Amity's first appearance outside the credits is . . . something. It's easy to forget just how far she grew in one season.
* Eda's not a *bad* teacher, so much as she has yet to learn that teaching requires expanding on a concept you introduce and explaining your reasoning. "Here is what you can learn from tasting snow" instead of just "here, taste these different kinds of snow"
* Hm. For someone who despairs at the concept of the school teaching blind obedience, her teaching style kinda relies on it. Bit of a hypocrite there, Eda.
* Gonna be honest, the first time I watched this and King mentioned Eda sneaking a drink of elixir, I thought it was going to turn out to be a magic-looking flask.
* It seems slightly odd that King's apparently known Eda for a while but didn't have any idea of the curse. Maybe she was just REALLY good about keeping up with her elixirs pre-series.
* Really like the metaphor for a chronic illness that's kept under control by medication.
* If the Emperor's Coven provides access to all forms of magic, you'd think others aspiring for a spot would be permitted a multi-track education at Hexside. That might be why none of them seem to be that impressive at magic when they're supposed to be the "best of the best" -- even if they have *access* to all forms of magic, they've only had training in one specific field during the bulk of their education.
* lbr, Lilith's cheating was worse because at least Eda told Luz what she was doing.
* You'd think Willow and Gus might have caught on that Luz didn't have permission for them to come over when she told them to hide from Eda.
* It's nice that Eda realizes raising a kid with a "screw the rules" mindset will result in a kid who breaks her rules sometimes. Cleaning up the mess she caused is really the correct punishment for Luz; directly dealing with the consequences of her actions but otherwise considering it a lesson learned.
* Reading to kids in the library is an A+ way to shift Amity from "Jerk" to "Jerk with a heart of gold" territory.
* Prediction: At some point, Luz will return to the human world (probably only briefly but Eda won't know at the time) and Eda will come across the "Coping with empty nest syndrome" book Luz got her from the library. She'll cry. King will cry. Hooty will cry. Every viewer will cry.
* Pretty sure that, given what the world is like, if any of them ended up questioned about their actions during the body swap episode, they could just say "Oh yeah I was body swapped that day. What'd I get up to?" and everyone would consider this a perfectly logical explanation for them acting out-of-character.
* HC that Hexside is fully aware some illusion-track students skip class by having an illusion of themselves attend in their place, but they figure a student maintaining a decent replica of themselves for the duration of the class period requires enough effort to count as a form of class participation, so they just let everyone think they're getting away with it.
* Gus and Willow are really ride-or-die friends. Always nice to have.
* Probably some of the mystery appeal will be gone from the Human Appreciation Society once a legit human is just attending classes on a regular basis; being able to get definitive answers to questions rather than spending your time speculating would cut back on the draw.
* I love all the details they include on this show -- a lot of other shows would just stick in scribbles while panning past pictures instead of writing out all of Eda's incident reports.
* The pallisman is a neat concept; sort of like a mix of a wand and a familiar, a magical control that will have opinions of its own.
* Given Bat Queen apparently has enough of, um, a biological aspect to have kids, I wonder if that means Owlbert is capable of laying eggs. Or having eggs with another owl/pallisman if the male pronouns are anything to go by.
* I mean even Phineas and Ferb didn't question Perry laying an egg when he uses male pronouns so could go either way in terms of what Disney would allow.
* Reading the book fair signs, it looks like sci-fi is a popular genre in the Boiling Isles. Makes sense, since what we'd consider Fantasy would be more contemporary/urban fantasy to them.
* Getting the vibe that someone on staff had a less-than-amicable experience co-writing with a friend to inspire this one. And/or experience with shitty contracts.
* The Hexside requirements also required knowledge of basic runes, but given Luz apparently had no issue with that I'm guessing she just picked those up offscreen.
* "I've seen worse" is the ideal admissions response tbh. Like . . . she pulled off the required spells and the headmaster has seen decades of students' awkward first attempts. It probably counts as a good day when no one's admissions test resulted in needing to bring in someone from the Construction Track to repair the building.
* It's very reminiscent of D&D that the majority of the cast has the response of "This is clearly a trap. Let's check it out!"
* You'd think that carnival fortune tellers wouldn't have the same appeal in a world where it's something you study at school. Unless it's viewed the same way as those "magic" shows they have sometimes where the tricks all involve chemical reactions.
* Kinda surprised a school that teaches kids fire spells doesn't have some kind of fire suppression system in place.
* Hrm. Guessing the mind guardian went back and undid their own damage offscreen; otherwise they'd have had to go re-do the repairs before leaving.
* Good they had the wifi and charging cable coming through the portal to explain why Luz' phone still has service and the battery's not long dead.
* Luz, how have you survived this long with your instinct for pushing buttons. The same as the rest of humanity in a world full of buttons, I suppose.
* Probably if they thought about it, the best criteria for picking Grom royalty would be less who's the most skilled at magic and more who has the most low-key fears. . . . nvm, having a Stay-Puft incident would cause them to reasonably scrap that approach. Maybe appointing someone who obsesses over grades would have better odds of producing a relatively-simple-to-combat exam paper.
* I'm thinking the letters are written by Eda, who doesn't intend anything sinister by it so much as being the type to cover her bases when pulling off a scam and realizing Luz' mother would need some evidence to indicate her daughter was safely at camp.
* The band-aids clearly have some healing spell built-in, considering they've been used to heal inanimate objects.
* someone on the writing staff has a long-standing rant about Quidditch they've been holding back on.
* I know that normally the humor in the cut from "she's finally growing up." to Luz planning the heist would be that she's doing something that sensible adults would consider to be a bad idea, but if Eda saw her just then she'd wipe away a tear of pride and go "Her first self-planned heist! They grow up so fast!"
* Eda's the one who talks about cheating at stuff, but Lilith has a habit of playing *dirty*.
* I would like to say I appreciate them going with a more serious credit sequence because it was disconcerting with Star Vs when a dark ending was followed by "I THINK EARTH'S A REALLY GREAT PLACE"
* Lilith may have made a 30-years-late attempt to redeem herself, but I really don't trust her. I don't quite want her dead, but she DID spend decades trying to force her sister to join the Emperor's Coven as a prerequisite for curing her curse.

Course Registration
Last Thursday, I registered for my fall 2021 courses. It’s crazy to think that by the time I start those courses I will be a junior and halfway through my time at Smith. Course registration was a bit different this semester as we just transitioned to Workday from BannerWeb. In the old system, you needed a registration code from your advisor and had to manually enter five-digit codes for each course. With the new system, your advisor directly lifts the hold on your account after your advising meeting. You can read more about advising at Smith here. In Workday, you build your planned schedule in advance of registration. When the actual registration window opens, it is as simple and clicking the orange “Start Registration” button under your saved schedule. The new process is super easy and thus didn’t really warrant a whole post.
One aspect of registration that remains the same as in past semesters, but that was new to me was the process of submitting Course Eligibility Waivers (also known as the JOT override form). This form is required for courses that are either full or exclusively do registration by permission/waitlist. Furthermore, the form is necessary in cases where you don’t meet an eligibility requirement (prerequisite, major, class year, etc.), but can justify why you should be allowed to enroll. The form opens on, or just before, the first day of registration and can be found in the academics section of Workday. It’s not clear how much you are supposed to write, but I definitely took the process of outlining my prerequisites and academic/career interests seriously. For my engineering course, which is enrolled by instructor permission only, I was fortunately approved within just a few days. (I submitted the form on Monday and was approved on Thursday). I also submitted an override form for an elective but am still waiting to hear back about it. For some of the more official information about course registration, click here. You can also read about my experience with Five College registration here.
As for Workday, I honestly don’t really know what it is. For my entire time at Smith, Workday has been used to manage various aspects of being a Smith employee or student worker. Specifically, Workday is where we submit hours, set up direct deposit, and download tax documents. Furthermore, Workday is where on-campus jobs are posted. You can read more about on-campus jobs here. With the new academics section of Workday, you can also view your academic record.
The most fun part of the registration process is looking through the course offerings. While this can be done directly in Workday, I still prefer to use Course Search as it’s much easier to read the course descriptions. On the other hand, Workday allows you to filter classes by meeting pattern (day and time block). I suspect that the course search functionality of Workday will improve in future semesters.
In addition to looking at course offerings for next semester, it’s often useful to consider past and future semesters. Specifically, if a particular course that you are excited about is only offered every other fall it may be worth prioritizing over a course that is consistently offered every semester. In addition to the aforementioned course search tools, the actual course catalog can be a good resource. Beyond general trends, you can sometimes get more detailed information about what will be offered the following semester. As an example, in the presentation of the engineering major, they shared a list of the planned courses for spring 2022. I know that seems a long way off, but that information played a key role in my course selections for fall 2021. Furthermore, just by asking my advisor, I was able to get a list of spring 2022 computer science electives.
I know that this may all sound overwhelming (multiple websites and having to think a year out), but believe me, it’s so much fun exploring the course offerings. While the information about BannerWeb is now obsolete, here is some advice that I wrote specifically for first-years. The one aspect of course registration that is not so fun is trying to deal with schedule conflicts.

“Wet Sugar” [Part 19 of 30]
youtube
Summary: Erik teaches Yani a lesson and change is in the air...
NSFW. Mature Audience. Smut.
"Sunshine & the rain Sunshine & the rain I'm feelin that pressure, now, now I'm feelin that same old round and round I can't go forward
I need a boost to catapult me high feels like the come up is way too tight chokin and squeezin' my life, every time"
Joi—"Sunshine & The Rain"
Yani knew Erik watched her from the security cams when she left for the night. She made sure to walk in front of all visible optics in case Neal was lurking for her too. Huntsman commenting on her relationship with Erik frightened her. Did Klaue know about it too?
The thought worried her all night when she slept at Leona's apartment. When she arrived back at the compound to cook breakfast and prep for the dinner meal, she stayed in the front house the entire time. It wasn't until the men left for the day to explore island bars that she even took a bit of time to walk down to the cove to relax. Erik was gone with the men. She had hoped that he could stay behind with her, but he made a point of driving the others into town. She asked him to pick up bottled water and extra batteries just in case they needed them.
The sky was even grayer when the men returned late in the evening. She ignored them all, including Erik. The standing freezer had an abundance of nickel-sized scallops and prosciutto. Yani cooked thin spaghetti noodles with fish sauce and fresh garlic with the scallops and tossed together an Italian salad with the thin slices of cured ham. This particular crew wasn't particular or even cared for dessert, so she watched them eat her food and quickly cleaned up after them when they were done.
She heard Erik talking to the others in the front house den. He was encouraging the men to leave early in the morning before the storm arrived, but the captain of the boat had trepidations about sailing back to Florida. Erik mentioned Puerto Rico but there was grumbling. The point became moot when one of the men turned up the view screen and the weather report was dire. The storm had grown and would pass by the island sooner than originally predicted.
The men would stay longer.
Erik sent her a text.
Go home and don't come back here until I tell you. Get to safety with your family.
She quickly texted him back.
If it gets bad, the safest place here is under the middle house. There is a large crawlspace there right under the kitchen window outside. The panic room is only for you. No one else.
Hug the baby for me.
Yani put together a to-go plate for herself and slipped away from the grounds without the men noticing.
Her Aunt and cousins made plans to stay in a shelter and she packed up pull-ups and baby food for Sydette and a small clothing bag for herself. Piling blankets in her car, she drove herself, Sydette and Twyla to the church shelter they had used since she was a child. It was better to be safe than sorry, and the other islanders who thought the same were already hunkering down for the night. As a child she had survived a Category 3 storm, so she was only slightly anxious with a Category 2 on the way.
The entire night she listened to prayers, a short sermon from the Pastor, and soft whispers from all around her as they all waited to see what the next day would bring. She dozed off around two in the morning but was abruptly woken up with Sydette clutched in her embrace as the wind howled outside the church. It was seven in the morning but darkness surrounded them.
Yani sat up and looked at Leona and Twyla.
"How bad is it?" she asked.
"We were lucky. The hurricane died down and didn't even come near us. Right now we are getting the tail end of a strong tropical storm. Praise God. Them say it'll pass through by evening," Leona said.
Yani exhaled with relief.
She changed Sydette's pull up and cleaned her hands with hand sanitizer before opening up a jar of baby food.
"We should go home," Twyla said.
"I think we should stay until we know for sure it is safe," Leona said.
Yani checked her cell. Erik sent a few texts while she was asleep. It looked like he was awake all night by the number of messages he left for her and the baby. She texted him back letting him know her family's plan to stay at the church longer. She was glad that their cell phones still worked.
Food was served throughout the day and by early evening, the winds had died away leaving a summer rain and the winking of sun rays peeking through the last of the clouded sky. She packed up her things and drove back to Leona's.
There was a time-sensitive notification in her emails that jumped out at her as she contacted relatives in the states to let them know they were okay. Although cell service worked on the island, it was crackly and hard to hear when they tried calling overseas.
The email was from the University.
A nursing student had dropped out of the early summer track for three online classes and Yani was offered the spot because of her high entry test scores. She accepted quickly and took a deep breath. She was going to start school sooner than expected. It meant she could qualify for three prerequisites for the newly created nurse/midwife track she wanted to get into. It also meant she had a shot at entering the accelerated program that was opening the following Spring.
It was happening.
Her career goals were coming to fruition.
Yani took a moment sitting in front of her Aunt's desktop computer in the living room. She touched her chest and felt her heart pounding. As long as she kept up her grades she would succeed. Gratefulness swelled inside of her. The time Erik gave her to relax and do some self-study on her own made her feel confident accepting the early start. She could do this. For herself and her baby.
She grabbed her phone.
"Killmonger."
"You and the baby good?"
Hearing his voice made her eyes water. She was glad she didn't face chat him.
"We're fine. Back at Auntie's. Killmonger…I get to start school early."
"Yeah?"
She spilled out her good news and Twyla walked in on her and saw the joy on her face. Her cousin's hand rubbing her back at the news made Yani feel happy.
School would start in a week.
She was ready.
###
Erik didn't allow Yani to return to the compound until the mercs had left.
He baked her a cake to congratulate her on her early start for school, and he damn near ran to her car when she pulled onto the property with the baby. His hand gripped her neck so tight once he had her in his arms. He didn't allow Sydette to leave his side once he had her back with him. The mercs leaving along with the storm made the compound feel light and free again.
Watching Yani eat the cake he made while feeding some to Sydette calmed his nerves. Their first night back together had them all cuddled together in one bed, and he spent the rest of the week spoiling Yani with fancy food, back rubs, foot massages and nights out with her friends while he looked after the baby.
Her last night going out before she started her classes found him cooking oxtails the way Leona showed him how to do it and attempting to make a decent batch of stew peas and rice. Sydette ran around him in the kitchen of Klaue's main house while Yani got showered for her evening of fun. He made the food for Yani's return because she was always starving after a late night out.
Packing the food up into the fridge, he gathered Sydette's overnight bag and carried the baby into the master bedroom.
"Aye Sweet Pea, say bye-bye to Mama. Kiss!" Yani said holding out her hands for Sydette.
Draped in a fluffy white bathrobe and face unmade, Erik watched Yani give smooches all over Sydette's face.
"Be a good girl for Twyla," she said.
"Be back," he said.
Taking Sydette away from her, Erik drove to Leona's and handed the baby over to Twyla. By the time he made it back to the compound, Yani had on her make-up and her clothes…
"The fuck you wearing?"
She stood in front of the master bedroom vanity mirror primping and smoothing oil onto her platinum-colored hair. Face beat like a Boss Bitch, her eyes dragged away from her own visage and gazed at him.
"What you mean?"
"Bend over."
Yani leaned forward slightly and the short form-fitting white shirt she was wearing like a mini dress raised up and he could see the underside of her ass cheeks clear as day.
"Nah…nah…put some pants on or get something else on—"
"Serious?"
She sucked her teeth at him.
"You ain't got no panties on—"
"Yes, I do."
She lifted up the dress higher and he saw silky white boy shorts.
Erik twisted up his lips. He didn't want to be that dude. He didn't want to sound or look like an insecure pooh butt. Women could wear what they wanted. He appreciated women who dressed sexy and were confident in that sexiness.
However…
"Yani, these niggas be ruthless in the club. Why you gotta have so much ass out? You know they gonna push up on you…I can see your cheeks, girl—"
"Barely. Just tell me you don't wahn mi grindin' on niggas—"
"I don't want you grindin' on niggas with that dress on."
"I'm not changing clothes."
She put her hand on her hip and her eyes challenged him to say different.
He fell back and watched her slip on her heels and grab her small purse.
"Who's picking you up?"
"Lesonne. I'm catching a cab back if I get tired early…stop trippin'. It's really not that short…"
His eyes dragged down to her thighs. He could see the tops of them. The dress shirt flared out on the sides hanging low enough to cover her hips, but the cut still showed a lot from the front and back.
Let her show off in peace.
The click-clack of her silver heels on the tiled floor broke him out of his thoughts of making her stay home with him. He seriously thought of going with her, but she was so bubbly gossiping with her girlfriends that he had to figure out why he was so agitated about a dress. A stupid dress he would've lusted over himself had he seen her in a club with it on. He would've been one of the men pushing up on her if he didn't know her.
She checked her phone.
"They're on their way," she said.
He followed her up to the main gate of the compound, and the longer they walked with her ahead of him, the more time he had to look at her hips twisting as she walked, her thighs all out teasing him. Erik felt that gnawing need to control what was happening. He reached out and stroked the right curve off her ass.
"Don't have them dudes—"
She brushed his hand away from her body.
His eyes narrowed and he pulled her arm back toward him.
"Are you listening to me?"
"I'll be a good girl."
She said the words, but the twist of her lips told him otherwise. He reached behind her and slapped her ass. Hard.
"Ow!"
She punched him in his chest.
"I'll be up waiting for you."
"I may not be back until early tomorrow."
Now he was really irritated.
"So what was the point of me taking Sydette to your Aunt's? We were supposed to have a grown- up night together before you start school—"
"I told you that I wasn't sure when I would be back—"
"You said no later than one or two."
"Well, it may be later than that—"
"So we not fucking?"
She checked her cell and fixed the thin white belt that cinched her waist.
"We'll see how I feel when I get back."
She rubbed his arm and turned around to show him her backside. Jiggling her cheeks, she giggled at him with her teasing.
"See, now you're being mean," he said.
He took his flat palm and smacked the shit out of her rump. She yelped and rubbed her ass.
"Save that for when I get—"
He yanked her panties down and slapped her vulva.
"Killmonger!"
Her hands tried to block his.
"Take them off."
"They're going to be here—"
"Take them off."
They heard Lesonne's car roll to the front of the gate, music blaring, tires screeching to a halt. Yani's phone vibrated in her purse. She pulled it out.
"Tell her you'll be out in a minute," he whispered.
Her fingers swiped her phone screen and she put her cell back in her purse.
"Panties."
Yani stepped out of her tiny boy shorts and held them. He moved up against her and traced his finger along her lips, the red matte lipstick rich on her mouth. He bent down and kissed her, serving her his warm tongue and he felt her body go limp against his.
Slipping two fingers between her legs, he separated her folds. She tugged on the bulge in his jeans. Inserting his fingers into her pussy, he thrust in and out slowly making her squirm. Her hand made his dick lift up so that it pointed at her.
"You wore that dress just to fuck with me," he whispered.
Her eyes were glassy and her pussy was dripping. The sticky fluid from her body made squishy sounds. He kept manipulating her folds until her legs shook. She vacillated between biting her lips, staring down at his fingers, and closing her eyes as he varied the depth and speed of his digits inside of her.
"Erik…fuck…"
"You come home at a decent hour so I can get in all this. Hear?"
Yani bit her lips as she tried to stifle the tiny groans coming from her mouth.
"I should fuck you right now, right here," he said.
"They're waiting…"
"So."
"Huuhnnn…"
Her hands rested against his chest, her warm fingers, pushing him back.
Hooking his fingers, Erik tapped on her walls and let his thumb flick over her clit.
"I should pick you up and let you slide down this dick. Fuck you standing up—"
"Stop!"
Yani removed his fingers from her slit and stepped away from him.
"Let me get going. I'll let you have it all when I get back."
He spun her around and pushed her against the gate. Dropping to his knees he pulled her soft ass cheeks apart and shoved his entire face into her pussy lips.
He heard Yani's hands slam against the metal gate bracing herself and she pushed her backside out giving him even more access to her private parts. Sliding his tongue along her outer labia, he licked his bottom lip that was wet with saliva.
He heard faint sounds escape her mouth as she tried to keep quiet as her friends waited on the other side of the gate. Shoving his tongue deep inside of her, Yani rocked her hips back to smash her ass into his face and he loved it. He gripped his dick through his pants and squeezed his balls to keep himself from cumming. He wanted to be knee-deep in her walls when he did that.
Removing his tongue, he let Yani's ass strike his face, getting his beard drenched with her sweet fluids. He had her soaking wet. It was time to make her pussy submit. Erik became a flurry of fingers and wet tongue kissing as he licked her engorged labia like icing off a cake. Bathing her pussy with his saliva, he dragged his tongue along all the sensitive parts that made her melt in his mouth.
"Daddy gon' chop this peach up when you get back."
He felt the heavy throbbing weight between his legs and before the surge from his balls could overtake him, Yani shuddered while his lips sucked on her clit, her release making her plump vulva spasm.
"Pussy sloppy, baby…"
He licked up all the excess juices that poured from her and kissed her folds gently, his full lips pressing against her skin, still feeling the slight spasms from the tail end of her orgasm.
"Watch yourself," he said.
She pulled her panties back on while he stood up and adjusted his dick. He was so horny for her.
"Just gonna leave Daddy like this?"
She rolled her eyes and he opened the gate for her.
His erection grew more rigid as he watched her walk away from him and get into the car.
Such a tease.
###
Erik surveyed some gun schematics on his laptop. It was nearing midnight and he was restless. He had tried to watch porn earlier, but none of the women he saw online excited him enough to rub one out. All he had eyes for was Yani and that mini dress. He took out some weed he got from Kendall and rolled a tight one. The baby wasn't there so he felt cool about indulging.
His cell buzzed and when he checked it, there were a series of pictures that Yani sent him. A few group shots with her friends, but a few with men at the club posing with her crew, and sure enough, that fucking dress was doing too much.
He went back to looking at gun designs and another text blew up his phone.
A video.
Yani and her girls dancing, but Yani was winding on some Rasta looking clown who was pressed up against her.
"See, this the shit I was talking about," he grumbled.
It didn't matter. He was going to use up a whole bottle of lube when she came home. A long drag on his herb had him toasted. Shit was potent as fuck.
The clip was only a minute long but long enough to let him know she was buzzing and showing off. Her girlfriends were egging her on and just as tipsy and feisty as she was.
He texted her.
Slow your roll, Ma. For real.
You not my daddy, lol!
She sent him more pictures, trying her best to be provocative. He didn't fall for it.
It wasn't until he saw a thirty-second video clip of another man grinding on her and patting her vulva through her dress that he jumped off the couch.
###
"We run tings. Tings nuh run we!"
The Flourgon song made Yani's hips dip, and she watched the crowd dance while she sipped on her apple martini in the V.I.P. section she reserved for her friends. It was ladies' night, and this particular club was a diverse mix of locals and white tourists. She liked the booth they were set up in. They could see what was happening around the club, but other patrons couldn't see what they were doing.
All of her friends were happy for her, and she was cutting up in the club with them, feeling powerful and ready to take on the world. Bottle service was popping and she was given extra drinks for free because of her connection to Kendall who had performed there the previous weekend.
The music switched to R&B and Yani followed her friends onto the floor and they became ridiculous with their dancing. She kicked off her heels and swung them in her hand as she downed shots and sang off-key to the music with her girls.
She took out her cell and took more video shots to send to Erik. She posted two pictures on her social media page of the group shots she had in their V.I.P. booth. On her way back to her section, she stopped by the bar to order hot wings and potato poppers to snack on and soak up the liquor in her belly.
Stepping near her booth, Lesonne tugged on her arm.
"Is that your man?"
Yani was confused by the question until she saw Erik bee-lining his way toward her. His lips were tight when he reached her group.
"There she is, Miz fatness."
The gruff island voice startled Yani as a man she had danced with earlier rubbed up against her, his hand sliding around her waist, his locs falling against her cheek.
In front of Erik.
Her man's eyes lowered to stare at the stranger's hand and Yani moved up on the single step that led to her booth to separate herself from the man. Her friends filed behind her, their eyes taking in the whole scene.
"What are you doing here?" she asked.
Erik shoved past the other man, his shoulder knocking him aside.
"Aye!"
"Fuck you want?" Erik said.
The stranger looked Erik up and down, and what he saw made him move along without another word.
Yani's friends stood away from them, leaning against the railing that separated their section. They looked out onto the dance floor. The tone of Erik's voice made Yani nervous.
"Why yuh here?"
She eased him into a corner of their section where no one on the floor could see them too well. But her friends could hear everything.
"You tryna be too cute. That's why I'm here. Got niggas touching your pussy in public—"
Yani heard her friend Milah let out an "Ooh…I knew it."
His eyes were on her dress again.
"Please. Don't make a scene, man. Not here. We're having a good time. You didn't need to come down here to tell me that. Coulda texted—"
"Nah, you wanted this attention."
His eyes were blazing. She caught a whiff of weed from his breath.
Lesonne placed a shot glass into Erik's hand.
"Drink up. It's a celebration," Lesonne said.
Erik tossed back the tequila and Yani moved over to the railing to watch the crowd and divert Erik's attention. She was shocked when she felt his palm strike under her ass. He pressed up against her and let his hands grip the railing, trapping her there. His hot breath tickled her ear as he leaned in to whisper.
"Didn't I tell you to watch yourself before you left? You think I was playing?"
"It was nothin'."
His hand reached down and clutched at her mound.
"He had his hand on you like this. Bitch, I can feel how fat your puss is through this dress. You let that nigga touch my shit."
Yani's eyes darted to the side. All four of her friends had their eyes glued to the dance floor, but she knew their ears were stinging from Erik's words.
"Let's talk about this at home—"
"No."
His voice was raspy against her ear.
"You tryna get fucked in the club?"
Now he was getting loud. She tried to turn around but he kept her in place, his groin shoved hard against her ass. She turned her head and his lips met hers. He wasn't gentle with her mouth, but he was gentle with his hips rocking into her. He dropped his right hand down and wiggled his fingers under the front of her dress and slipped them down her panties. The stimulation from his fingers across her plump clit had her mewling and pushing back against him. The blood in her body thrummed hot as his tongue slid against hers. No matter what happened between them, his kisses always disarmed her.
Her head dropped forward when his fingers sunk into her pussy.
"This what you wanted?"
"Ooh."
He was digging deep.
"I saw you out there dancing. All this big ass out in the open…"
Her friends pretended not to notice, but they could hear everything. Even her wet folds being assailed by his hand.
Erik removed his hand from her slit for a few seconds, and she felt him unzip his pants and lift up the back of her dress. She gripped her fingers around the railing. Two of her friends slipped away to the dance floor. The other two stood rooted, heads facing forward. Erik yanked her panties down to her knees.
Her skin felt tingly and once she felt him lining his glans against her opening, she accepted what she had done. She wanted to incite his ardor. She wanted to flaunt her body to get him enflamed for her. She wanted him begging for her pussy. At home.
But no.
He drove all the way across the island, walked into this club so he could-
"Fuck, Killmonger!"
His dick stretched out her opening, and from the angle he entered her, the head of his dick tugged down on her clit and the sensation shot out a hot ripple of pleasure up to her nipples and down to her toes.
From the floor, if anyone looked up, they would simply look like a couple hugged up watching the action. Erik kept his hands gripped on her waist as he rocked into her.
"Fucking slut."
His words slurred in her ear.
"Look at your friends. Making them watch Daddy fuck you like this."
Her eyes flicked over to glance at Milah and Lesonne who stayed behind. Milah's eyes were brazen and aroused watching Yani get pounded in public. Her eyes trailed down Yani's body until she was staring at Erik's dick pumping in and out of her.
"Shit, Yani. Yuh nasty. Him beating up that pum pum," Milah said.
Erik dragged her over to the back of the VIP section and away from her friends, his dick still rooted deep within her. He grabbed her arms to balance himself and really started to thrust. Yani chewed on her lips trying to keep quiet, but a few cries got out, drowned by the loud bass thudding throughout the club. Her balance was thrown off when he released her arms and she reached out to hold onto the wall.
Erik yanked her underwear back up as he pulled out.
"Be still."
She whimpered as he placed his erection between her thighs and jerked off his load into her panties. He swallowed the grunts in his throat as the last of his semen spilled out.
"Pull your panties back up," he said.
Yani did as she was told, her soaked underwear sticking to her vulva. She smoothed down her dress and still felt the thumping of her clit. She turned to face him and he zipped up his pants.
"Let somebody touch my shit now, girl."
He looked at her friends who avoided eye contact with both of them and left her standing there. They watched him move through the crowd, his swagger so acute that Yani had to pour herself a glass of champagne and gulp it down.
Panties filled with cum and a face filled with embarrassment, Yani said nothing to Milah or Lesonne.
###
Erik was reading in bed when Yani returned to the compound. He'd been at the house for over an hour before she came back.
She showered and crawled onto the bed next to him. He ignored her, even though she was butt naked. After a time, he put the book on the nightstand and looked at her.
"Rest of the night was cool?"
"Yeah."
His eyes tried not to stare at her body too much, but he couldn't help it. Her face looked pouty. He pinched one of her nipples.
"You fucked me in front of my friends."
"So. They didn't look bothered by it. They say something?"
"Not really."
"You need to apologize to me."
"For what?"
"Making me come out there. I had shit to do here. But you got out of pocket. Stole some work time from me."
Her fingers stroked his naked chest tracing the skin between his keloids.
"I'm sorry."
"Nah. Not like that. You know what I want."
He pulled the covers back from his body and lifted up his dick. Her fingers clasped it and she lowered her head and wrapped her lips around it.
"Damn," he hissed.
Once she had him standing at attention, her fingers slipped between her legs and she fondled her clit.
"Get it ready for me. You got some making up to do."
Her mouth sucked and licked up and down the sides of his length and he groaned from her loving tongue swiping against his balls. He reached for the lube next to his book and slathered his dick with it.
"Turn around. Sideways," he directed her.
He tilted his hips to the left slightly and Yani lowered her ass, her fingers holding open her labia.
"Slide down Daddy's dick, baby."
She was on her hands and knees and he had the pleasure of watching her entire side view as she bounced on his dick. His left hand rested on her ass cheek.
"I'm sorry, Daddy."
"Show me."
Her breasts jiggled and he reached over to play with her big nipple. She had a steady rhythm.
"You gon' let some other nigga touch my pussy again?"
Her lips curled up and she shook her head vigorously when he started thrusting up into her.
"What? I didn't hear you."
Her hand reached back and touched his side.
"Ooomph…Daddy!"
He was stretching her out real good.
"Answer me."
He slapped her backside. She leaned down on her elbows and pressed her face into the mattress. That wouldn't do. He grabbed her arm and pulled her to face him. She plucked on her nipples and pushed her breasts together for him. Her pussy was squeezing him while he let her do most of the work. He slapped the side of her hip and her eyes shot open.
"You betta answer me—"
"I won't let no one touch my pussy…just you…just you."
"This pussy is so good…you liked it when Daddy fucked you at the club, huh?"
"Yeah."
"You liked your friends watching me dick you down, huh?"
Her pussy clenched around him.
"Yeah, you liked that shit. You liked them seeing what you get all the time. Daddy's big dick all in your fat pussy."
She was wailing as she bounced on his dick. He played with her nipple and watched his thickness split her good. He lifted up and held her back, widening his thighs so he could get his balls all up in her ass. He held her in that position for a long time, punishing her folds until she was begging him to let her cum.
"Don't you ever let me catch you with some other man's hand on this pussy. Hear me?"
"Yeah!"
Erik pulled out and pushed her onto her stomach. He climbed on top of her and inserted his dick once more. He gave her slow thrusts until her fingers were clawing the pillows.
"Cum on me, Yani."
She screamed his name and fell apart on his dick. He didn't wait for her to finish as he sped up his pace and then pulled her on her knees so he could watch her rock back onto his length.
"Had all my cum in your panties…"
"Yeah…"
"You liked that, didn't you?"
"Yeah."
He groaned out loud.
"Cum in me, Daddy."
"Whatchu want Daddy to do? Tell me again…"
"Cum in my pussy…"
"…fill your pussy up?"
"Make a big mess, Daddy…"
"Like I did at the club?"
"Yeah."
"Wet your pussy up like I did those panties?"
"Please—"
"Tell me—"
"I want you to wet my pussy up. Make a big mess like you put in my panties—"
"That's what you want?"
"Yeah."
"You like it when I make you sloppy—"
"Yeah."
"Give you a big cream pie—"
"Mmmhmmm."
"Ah shit-!"
It never failed. Talking to her while watching the sexy dimpling in her ass, her thighs striking his, it never took long for him to let go whenever he was ready. He ejaculated, the tight pulling on his balls letting him know he had emptied out another huge load.
He stayed in her pussy for the rest of the night, fucking her until she fell asleep in his arms. The bottle of lube was empty like he thought it would be.
###
Erik worked hard to get a workable mock-up of the weapons he wanted to convert with the vibranium. He found it hard to concentrate for the last few weeks because he and Yani had both been busy. Sex was infrequent, and she was gone from the compound a lot. He thought her online classes would keep her close, but it actually took her away. She started a study group with a few other online students on the island and met with them three times a week. Her courses were time-consuming and her energy was spent on assignments, getting high grades on her quizzes and tests, and caring for Sydette. She was mentally drained by the end of the day and was often knocked out by the time he joined her in bed at night.
He felt displaced.
Their life had been perfect, but now he was losing her to school.
When her midterm rolled around and they were easing into August, she dropped some news on him that upset him. The apartment she was going to share with her roommate was available and the leasing agent wanted her and her roommate to take it right away or risk losing it to another tenant. She wanted to move out right away. Her roommate was ready to get the apartment too.
She told him while he took out braids from Sydette's hair on the porch.
Yani was going to settle on the other side of the island with the baby, leaving him at the compound alone.
As always, when it rained, it poured.
While Yani went out for several days with her roommate to buy furniture and cookware for her new apartment, he received word from Klaue: he was coming back to St. Thomas.
Early.

Am I Ordained To Marry?
One standard requesting people position to us during training is on the off chance that they are assigned to marry. Scarcely any weeks sooner, a sister progressed toward me to ask regarding if she was alloted to marry. I approached regarding for what legitimate explanation she suspected so a ton. She conveyed, her pastor set them up that it is written in Matthew 19:12 that few individuals were made to be eunuchs and in light of everything, only one out of each odd individual is depended on to marry. Moreover, in the end she was worried by virtue of the diagram of disappointments she had experienced in her affiliations. Right when I saw whether they were comparably arranged how to isolate between the two get-togethers she said that was the explanation she came to ask me. I said she should have gone to her priest to ask regardless she said she would not considering how they were more amped up for the measure of spirits they had won to Christ than their own arrangements Ordination certificate .
Her enthusiastic refusal to go to her pastor for counsel was a verifiable sign that she had encountered a few bits of disappointment. I don't have the foggiest thought the measure of people are in an equal condition today. All I know is that someone will be freed from this bondage today.
Before I region the middle issue, let me uncover to you that Christianity is a sensible relationship. The very God that says he that wins a soul is skilled in like manner says marriage should be respected by all, and the marriage bed kept unadulterated, for God will censure the reprobate and all the expressly off-base, (Hebrew 13:4 NIV). The appearing of holding down make adults in house of prayer from marriage since you would uphold not to lose them to various splendid places or redirect them from agreeably captivating in refuge movement is lopsided and vomited for the improvement you need. Marriage is an honor before God. It gives miracle to God. Anyone that prerequisites to marry should be asked before they begin to challenge themselves obviously under your establishment.
My course is that while mentioning that they continue winning spirits they should in like manner be guided on the right strategy to find the right kind of life colleague and the right technique to marry. Urge them to let their marriage become at any rate a to the social occasion rather than short. If no one anyway you could look after 1,000 spirits, let you and your assistant partake in relationship with search after 10,000 spirits.
Matthew 19:12 says: '' For there are some eunuchs, who were so considered from their mother's waist: and there are some eunuchs, who were made eunuchs of men; and there are eunuchs, who have made themselves eunuchs for the achievement of the space of paradise. He that can get it let him get it.''
The above favored framing clearly portrays the three classes of eunuchs. Our place of supplement here will be on those considered eunuchs from their mothers' stomach. The other two are those obliged into it and those that injury up being so by their choice.
Unequivocally when God made man in His image and similarity, He declared that he should go into the world and increase. That affirmation is for you and me. The rule maintained way to deal with oversee achieve this advancement is to marry really and keep the private bed heavenly. You needn't play with an extraordinary master to mumble into your ears that the open entryway has appeared at marry. The standards are there in the book of sanctified compositions. That isn't our fixation until extra warning at any rate.
Take model from Abraham, the father of conviction. He didn't need any longing to see whether his childhood Isaac, required a mate or not. All he required was head recognition drawn from the Word of God. God let him know during his consider that through him the earth will be populated with His new period of youngsters. He settled it in his mind to get a partner for Isaac to make that calling and reason happen precisely true to form. At the selected time, he sent his star, Eleazar to go to his individual to get a partner for Isaac. You know the rest of the story in Genesis section 24.
God engineered man with all the features expected to play out all that He anticipates that him should do on earth in addition a producer won't put his things in the business place without the inbuilt features to work. Signs of pubescence, sexual sentiments and strong interest towards the other sex are a few pointers that you are alloted to marry. Correctly when His due season is close, He begins to show His longings your spirit for ahead transmission to these sluggish sexual anticipated outcomes in you and suddenly you will mix to certain store toward that way. The brilliant book says, '' it is God who works in us both to will and to do of his excellent happiness'', Philippians 2:13. Marriage is one of the supportive things that give bliss to God. Unequivocally when you start feeling the inclination or capacity to get hitched just perceive God has begun this exceptional work in you. Anybody that has this affinity or need to marry is one of those God has alloted to marry. There's nothing more to it!
To change into an eunuch or to marry is your choice. God has given you the over the top decision to pick it. He won't pick or power any one on you. Witness Paul chose not to marry since he expected to use his life to serve God and not in light of the fact that God said he should not. His case should not change into a standard to prevent people from fulfilling God's inspiration for their lives. He even castigated anyone that can't suffer it to marry rather than burning-through in hurting. If you choose to continue with a presence of ideals or choose to marry as you have required, God is content with you. Set forth an endeavor not to allow past frustrations weaken you or make you start feeling that it is conceivable that you are among the picked eunuchs. You are allocated! If things are not working incredibly, find what you have not been progressing agreeably, keep changing and working on yourself so God can connect you with the right kind of mate.
In any case, it doesn't mean you should race into anyone since God has willed it so for you. There is period to find the right kind of life partner and there is the ideal open door for planning. My stake here is to disclose to you that these signs put you in the class God has decided to marry. You do have a spot with the get-together of those made eunuchs from their mother's stomach.
Watchmen should pay uncommon mind to these signs in their children and wards. Definitely when these signs begin to show up, it is an indication to watchmen to fire setting up their youths or wards for the going with an extraordinary time. Sadly, various guardians and gatekeepers around these adolescents don't routinely set them up on time, and from time to time they misdirect them through wrong information. We owe the pushing toward age this duty as watchmen. The people who miss the mark at this level of supporting reliably consider it contemplating the way that late lines take certifiable marvelous time.
Those made eunuchs from their mother's waist don't have and will never will in general get hitched considering the way that they don't have the features in them. I don't mean those debilitated by illness, contaminations and diseases like down conditions, torment or loss of improvement. These are sound and virile individuals who are threatening to the site of the other sexual course. They never have any kind finishes towards the other sex regardless, when they are both stripped in a secret room.
Whether or not we choose to marry, remain single or brought into the world debilitated, it doesn't make us rats or better before God. He recognizes we generally speaking also, at any rate it will fulfill Him to see us fulfill His longings for us. I have watched out for the issues before you. The onus is beginning at now on you to pick what you need. Teacher Paul chose not to marry since it was his choice. Evangelist Peter didn't separate from his venerated one considering God's work, yet God recalled that them all. Pick your case without assistance from some other person.

Hello! I'm trying to type my little sister who's recently emerged from a hard time with some unexpected personal development. We're all pretty smart in our family, but when she was about four years old, she just... sort of taught herself how to read? She says she followed the letters with her eyes when we read her stories, and over time a system of observed patterns emerged in her mind and she just knew how reading works. Throughout her childhood, that's how things continued: whatever she (*1)
set her mind to, she'd be really good at it really quickly - but it never worked if she wasn't truly interested in it and saw the long-term benefits of investing in a skill. For example, as the oldest sister I was always very responsible and in tune with my siblings' feelings, whereas she's had to learn that there can be benefits to 'fitting in' and being accommodating. Her teenage years were, I think, very hard for her, as social connections at school drew back from her and I moved away (*2)
from home to attend college. She retreated into her own mind and suddenly fell from overachiever status to barely passing classes, sometimes she'd even skip going at all - not because she didn't care, but because something must have really stressed her so severely as to make her abandon her 'natural' values of learning and being good at things, even those that mattered to her outside of school (the piano, e.g.). Then, after barely graduating high school, she's had a couple of years of what (*3)
I can only describe as radical self development. She's lively, open to her family members and has few, but really strong bonds with good friends. She's kind of obsessed with giving her life meaning through the pursuit of her artistic visions, and understanding how the universe truly works. Her ultimate goal is to go into astrophysics, and she's rigorous about exercising and taking long walks, and actively seeks out people to talk about her wild visions and concepts so as not to fall into (*4)
self isolation, which she says she despises because it made her waste so much time. So while I'm definitely happy she's so open and reflected these days, I'm worried something similar is actually happening: she's currently forced to go through some really taxing college classes that do not interest her very much, but are mandatory for her further pursuit into physics. She missed a lot of stuff at high school, but won't just take her time to revise some of those basic concepts, instead (*5)
beating herself up about not being at least as good as everyone else. This has been going on for about half a year now. I'm afraid the combination with this psychological aspect has led to some atypical avoidance behaviour: she spends a lot of time procrastinating by researching completely unrelated topics, spending hours cooking or cleaning or just doing, well, nothing really. This is uncharacteristic for her and I'm really worried she will fall into some kind of hole again. She has (*6)
made a plan to pass those not so fun classes on her way to greater things, but she just won't get her act in order and sit down and do it! Perhaps MBTI could offer some insight: is she looping or in the grip, and is there anyway this concerned sister can help? I'm anxious to see her thrive again, and she just doesn't seem like herself by living from moment to the next without any overarching structure. Thank you!!
-------
Hi anon, there is a lot here, much of which is not useful for MBTI, so I would recommend you read through the FAQ in full. For example, childhood behavior is in my opinion not very useful (what you provided is more just a sign of intelligence).
I also, and this is not coming from an MBTI standpoint, advise you to scale back considerably in your efforts. You can (and should) talk to your sister. You can (and should) express your concerns and offer to help in whatever way you can. And to be fair I don’t know your sister and she might be receptive to you taking an unsolicited hands on approach. She might also think you’re overbearing and overstepping and wishes you’d let her figure her shit out in peace on her own (I sure would, especially at that age, and probably would have said as much too), which is why I advise talking to her, asking her what she needs, and if she says she’s fine and she’s not immediately endangering herself and others you say “okay, I’m here for you if you need me” and mind your own business.
That was all somewhat harsh but I say this from two positions, both as the eldest sister of four and as a physics major who had some similar issues to your sister: your behavior is not universal older sibling behavior and may be unwelcome, and while I do regret in a general way not going back and fixing some basics I fucked up while I was depressed, I still graduated with an undergraduate degree and passable GPA and have done fairly well for myself since. My graduate program included people who outright failed out of college the first time around and had to retake everything at a state school. She’ll be fine, and it is typically my opinion that someone will grow more as a person by letting them figure their own shit out and learn how to ask for help than from someone coming in and doing what they think is the right response.
Which brings me to the next point, namely her high school behavior could be just withdrawing under stress. It could also be depression or something that looks like it (bipolar type II, for example), and that’s something that is life-long and chronic. This isn’t uncharacteristic; she’s done it before in high school, she’s doing something , and the best action you can take is gently bringing that up and recommending she perhaps work on addressing this pattern, in whatever form that ends up taking.
What I’m trying to get at is MBTI is a pseudoscience that I really like and which I think can be useful, but if you actually want to help someone, ask them what they need. If you suspect they’re lying and in danger (that they’re suicidal or self-harming or dealing with addiction) then you should intervene but otherwise you can’t help someone who doesn’t want it. Make it clear you care about them and are worried and then let them handle it how they wish to handle it.
With all that in mind there’s not much to use here when it comes to typing. She sounds like a very intelligent person who for whatever reason has had periods when she was very unmotivated and undisciplined. The feelings of being behind or frustrated are pretty common for college students, particularly if she’s at a competitive college and has always been pretty bright and not prone to studying super hard. Not liking the boring prerequisites may be type related but it’s also just a matter of maturity, to push through dull obligations.
If you want to type her, the most important thing is getting a solid baseline of behavior, and I think because she’s been in such a state of flux over the past few years that will be very difficult. If you want to help her, express your concern to her, feel free to give advice, and listen to what she says, even if you don’t like it.
#mbti#i may have projected a lot on this one since i relate pretty hard to the sister#i did very well in high school but i had some similar struggles in college#and if someone were trying to be this hands on to me i'd have HATED it#Anonymous

『 LANDON LIBOIRON ❙ GENDERQUEER 』 ⟿ looks like ETHAN DIGBY is here for THEIR SECOND year as a VISUAL ART GRAD student. HE is 27 years old & known to be DEDICATED, HONEST, STUBBORN & PESSIMISTIC. They’re living in NOLAND, so if you’re there, watch out for them. ⬳ drew. twenty-two. est. he/him. ethan’s pinterest
trivia:
he really likes white cholate & hot chocolate, often eating handfuls of white chocolate baking discs regardless of the time of day.
visual art major --- tends to stray towards sculptures and installation pieces, though he does have a love for bob ross style landscape pieces. draws a lot of inspiration from older art, and many of his pieces are designed to look worn-out and as though they are missing pieces.
perpetually exhausted --- for all his love of schedules, he has never managed to consistently get enough sleep and though he loves tea, that never seems to have enough of an impact to truly wake him up ---- a.k.a he is a yawn prone little fuck
doesn’t quite believe the local legends, though he doesn’t dismiss them outright either. the statue by wishing tree has, however, made it into several of his works ---- statues seem to have her facial features without him ever meaning to and he will swear to anyone that asks that in sophomore year of his bachelor’s degree he woke up one morning to her face staring at him from amongst the trees on a painting he had been working on. he will hesitantly add that it’s possible that he had just been thinking of her while half asleep, though ethan doesn’t really believe that
currently working as a TA for some of the freshman art classes, as well as overseeing the use of the different art studios from time to time.
doesn’t believe in labels --- and that’s corny as hell, but he just wants to be able to be whoever he is in the moment and has had some harsher reactions when he uses umbrella terms, so he just refuses to label himself. relationship-wise it’s a whole different issue, he floats from one major relationship to another and often times will cycle back to one that’s already gone sour.
has recently started going to a therapist to talk about some of the issues he has processing emotions and his fear of change ---- it’s been helping but he’s still very much on the verge of flight mode and will run away from situations that demand any real sort of emotional input from him on occasion.
personality:
he is cynical, despite a desire to believe the best in people and the world - he has seen too much of the darker side of the world to ever truly believe it ---- this is reflected not only in his interactions with people ( he is open about expressing doubt and disbelief, he won’t believe a word you say, and he overanalyzes promises / invitations / declarations of love ) but also in his art and aesthetic which veers towards the dark and damned, a lot of his work is themed around broken things
stubborn as a mule ---- once he gets an idea in his mind, it can be hard to change his mind with logical arguments though an emotional appeal will have a better chance ---- he’s very set in his ways and struggles with questioning why things are the way they are, insisting that somethings should just be. loathes change and isn’t afraid to express this dislike --- tends to eat the same foods, wear the same clothes, go to the same places ---- despite a childhood dislike of routine, he finds it comforting nowadays, it feels safe.
loyal as all hell, you can hurt him a million times and he will still struggle to walk away and a genuine apology will win him back in an instant. he struggles to cut ties, even with those that he knows aren’t the best for him and has only successfully done so when it is possible for him to do so in a swift and permanent way. in most cases, he will eventually find his way back to those that he knows.
friendly but not overly so --- he has no issue approaching people if he needs something, but he’s not generally one to approach you just to “chat” b/c he’s not big on small talk in general and honestly? he’d never say it but if he doesn’t know you, he doesn’t really give a damn how your day went or how you feel about the weather or current events. if he drinks, he becomes a little more sociable in that matter, but that often drifts into “ethan is going to info-dump about whatever has his interest in the moment and the only way to stop him is to like physically place something in / on his mouth” territory which is a whole different level of awkward.
backstory:
growing up in a household where routine took priority, ethan spent a long time feel stifled by his parent’s demands that everything turned out perfectly ---- the neverending need to do things at just the right time, in just the right way. it was like fitting into a sweater that was just a tad too small, wrong in a way that is hard to explain
it’s in high school that he meets a true kindred spirit in the form of his art teacher ---- he helps ethan to realize his need for freedom and self-expression, and embraces his abilities in a way that he had always been afraid to. it’s a change that his parents are disapproving of, trying to reroute their son’s future to one of the paths that they would have approved of. but for once, he allows himself to rebel.
and after graduation, he leaves. running to new york, where he throws himself into the art scene head first without any real plans. for two years, he works multiple jobs as he cycles through sketchy roommates in his shitty apartment and equally shitty life partners, trying to discover things about himself that he hadn’t known before.
he’s still figuring some of that out, unsure of how to label his gender or his sexuality --- wishing more than anything that he could just be, a desire that he has long held onto since childhood that’s coming back to haunt them at last.
that’s not the only thing that’s caught up with them as of late, the digby’s finally managing to track him down in new york and showing up at his apartment two years after he initially ran off. they came with open minds and a burning desire to see their son do something other than work minimum wage jobs and live in run-down apartments. they were quiet and subdued in a way that they never had been.
it took six months for them to convince him to enroll in college, and he eventually chose to attend radcliffe with an undeclared major. it was far enough from his hometown that his parents couldn’t reasonably drive up too often, but close enough that he could go home if he had wanted. a three-hour drive in the best traffic.
the distance proved to be the right amount --- though his parents certainly seemed to pop up over the first three months with containers of food and worries that their child would have run off, they eventually learned to trust him. and slowly, the wounds healed ---- ethan wouldn’t say that they’re close but they’ve learned to respect each other’s boundaries.
and he’s never seen them more proud than at graduation, except maybe when he told them that he was going to apply to grad school. it wasn’t the path that they had planned for ethan, but they had learned to be enthusiastic about his success, about his dreams and about his art.
doing his master’s degree - it’s been weird. being here is weird for him in general, he still misses new york even though it was a whole different kind of existence ---- he misses the stability of going to work everyday and being completely independent. here, he has to rely on his professors and classmates, he has people that expect him to check in with them and there’s more socialization --- mostly because he’s been trying to do better with that.
connections:
good / bad influence: okay so traditionally, i think these would be separate connections but i think in this case, it’s more convoluted than that. for all of ethan running away from the environment his parents made, he’s very much stuck to those rules and expectations --- i would love for someone to start to break him out of that --- encourage him to party and drink and live life, and it doesn’t all have to be bad, it can be good too. you know, them bringing him to parties and him learning actually valuable lessons from it --- idk open to talking about their potential influence on each other, i think it could be fun
frenemies ( onesided or not ): i think a lot of ethan’s trust issues are a projection mechanism because he knows that in some ways that he can’t be trusted --- so i wld love for someone who they act like best friends when they’re together and then ethan just ... talks smack about them and doesn’t keep their secrets ( and maybe they do the same?? )
exes ( of all types / genders / whatever ): this one, my dear ethan, has gotten around a bit --- maybe they hooked up and now it’s awkward ---- maybe they dated for a while and keep circling back to each other despite knowing that they’re bad for each other ( a la unmiss you by clara mae ) ---- maybe they dated for a while and now they never talk so when they do see each other it’s just ... awkward as hell ---- open to literally anything with this one guys
art buddies: just two pals, palling around --- only prerequisite is that your character has some sort of interest in an art ( writing, theatre, music, film, etc etc ) --- and hey maybe they don’t get along but they put up a united front against the STEM majors who mock their choices in major?
other: open to discussing dormates, coworkers, current love interests and literally anything else that you can think of --- does your character need someone over 21 to buy them alcohol? call ethan. for real tho, hit me up and let’s come up with some stuff!

The Family Values Case For Abortion
Abortion and contraception are the greatest force for family values we have available. Family planning gives parents more predictability over their lives, leading to better outcomes for their children. Ironically, those who pride the importance of family the most are the least likely to use these tools to make a stable family. This shows a failure to adapt one’s morality to the world in which they inhabit.
Stable families do not occur on accident, nor are they created by accidents. They are the result of hard work between people looking to improve their futures. Given the amount of time and effort this requires, they must be entered into voluntarily and thoughtfully, or not at all. Basing a relationship around a child, who cannot contribute to this endeavor, and then expecting the proper conditions for childrearing to develop afterwards, is putting the cart before the horse.
With that in mind, the morality around creating families should reflect the best interests of any children being raised within them. This means ensuring that the family unit is in place before it takes on children. To pursue this goal, I propose two moral principles of reproduction:
1. 1. If someone is not actively seeking children, they must take precaution to prevent pregnancy.
2. 2. If a woman becomes pregnant by accident; or does not have a family in which to raise the child, she has a moral duty to abort the pregnancy.
On Trust
It can be difficult to speak of moral duties within a liberal framework. There are few situations in which only one decision is considered valid and all others are considered immoral.
However, the belief that parents must work in the best interests of their children appears to be axiomatic among most (if not all) of the world’s cultures. To most people, the best interest of the child is allowing them to thrive in the environment they will find themselves during adulthood and beyond. The way in which the family is structured is (ideally) meant to acclimate the child to these various conditions.[1]
In high-trust societies, the most secure way of maintaining or improving your social standing is by building longstanding relationships with other people. People who can trust those around them are better able to predict their own futures. This leads to a more secure environment, where swords can be turned into plowshares. In times of trouble, people can pool their resources to prevent damages and help others get back on their feet. Under such circumstances, large social structures can be created through consent rather than mere coercion. This model is as true of a small village as it is for a nation-state.
History of the Nuclear Family
The family structures that have developed and shown the most resilience in high-trust conditions are variations on the nuclear family. Many conservative moralists believe that the nuclear family (or the sanctity of marriage, depending on the version) is the backbone upon which every other part of society relies. I do not deny the nuclear family’s profound importance in our society. After all, my thesis is meant to adapt the practice to the modern era. I also understand where such an argument comes from. Since children are raised in families, and those children go on to perpetuate society, it is easy to see families as building blocks for society.
Despite this, I must emphasize that conditions of trust with the wider society are a prerequisite for a nuclear family, and not the other way around. If all a society had to do to convert itself from a low-trust to a high-trust system was to promote the practice, then we would expect it to spread to all societies on earth. The prevalence of practices such as arranged marriages and polygamy in much of the world shows that this is not the case. Where high-trust societies are found, variations on the nuclear family tend to develop naturally.
This becomes relevant when discussing how to promote successful family models. Traditionally, this was done by forcing couples together into families at the earliest opportunity. Whether or not they would be a good match for each other, let alone up to the task of raising children, was not the primary concern. Where this was not done through forced marriage, social norms such as abstinence before marriage and that pregnant women should marry their child’s father served to direct young people towards the institution. Within it, prohibitions on practices such as sodomy, contraception, and abortion meant that pregnancies occurred frequently and unexpectedly. When such norms are adhered to, family planning is not possible, meaning most children will be accidents.
This social system is designed to prioritize the quantity of children over the quality of their rearing. If your stated goal is to be fruitful and multiply in the name of some religion or ideology, then adhering to it makes sense. Such reasoning is not meant for the benefit of the children or even the parents. It exists to use the resulting children to spread whichever meme motivates the behavior. The logic is internally consistent, but by its design, is not in the best interest of the children being produced. If this reasoning is acceptable to its supporters, then dissuading them is outside the scope of this essay. However, it cannot be argued that creating children for a larger purpose they cannot freely choose promotes any enlightened form of family values.
The biggest flaw of the system, however, is that it seeks to create stability without allowing potential parents the autonomy that allows them to build trust. Any marriage based on lust rather than logic can be expected to fail.
This problem was done away with the creation of teenager as a separate stage of development. By allowing partial autonomy in certain matters, teens can work through their worst impulses before they would have serious effects on their futures. By allowing them to make and learn from mistakes, their future decisions become more informed. When your peers have all gone through this process, your entire society becomes more trustworthy. These high-trust conditions are what make the nuclear family possible and desirable, all without the need of rigid social norms. In the short time this has been accepted, it has proven a better guide to the young than conservative moralizing ever had.
Family Planning
The new trust afforded towards the young has translated into more trust for adults. This has developed into the idea that what goes on in the bedroom of consenting adults should not be interfered with. Because this has become a cliché, it is worth noting that this state of affairs is historically unprecedented for those outside the upper class. As such, it has not had the time to be intellectually explored to the same degree as the old system.
One example of this is how sexual freedom and the freedom to plan a family are conflated. This is a result of relying on traditional modes of thought. Before the advent of contraception, this conflation made sense. However, modern advances have separated sex from reproduction. Our philosophy should adapt to this development.
Abortion and the Family
Abortion is both always present and a lingering taboo. Most people will acknowledge its availability as good or at least necessary. However, when a woman considers whether to terminate her own unwanted pregnancy, it is treated as a matter of grave importance.
This duality is embodied by the position of someone who is pro-choice but would never terminate an unwanted pregnancy of their own. The reasons for this are hardly discussed before a pregnancy. However, mothers-to-be often develop a gut feeling that they have a moral duty to the fetus, even if they had never wanted a child. This should stand out as odd coming from someone who is pro-choice. The idea that parents have an unconditional obligation to their unborn children is the cornerstone of the pro-life argument against abortion. If these women feel their moral duty to their fetuses is logically founded, then any defense of abortion is a failure to protect children. The fact that every year, hundreds of thousands of women in America come to the same logically inconsistent conclusion shows that the new morality has yet to be fully accepted.
While the desire to protect one’s fetus may be an innate part of pregnancy, it is not always moral. This desire is an evolutionary holdover from before we could plan our families. It reflects a time when any given child had a slim chance of reaching adulthood and propagating the species. Under those circumstances, having as many kids as you could was not a matter of morality, but one of social security. Humans, having the longest childhoods of any animal species, have the most to lose when their children die. Therefore, accepting any pregnancy that came a woman’s way was a necessity.
Accidents Happen (But They Shouldn’t)
Spelling out the psychology behind these decisions makes them all the more jarring in the modern world. The march of medical technology has made infant mortality a negligible concern for the first time in history. We now have the stability to prepare our lives for any children we raise. I find it troubling that this fact has not been fully accepted.
If this were fully internalized, Americans would not live in a society where half their peers exist on accident. Each of these people has an early childhood that their parents (or parent, in some instances) had to cobble together in a few months. Considering the importance of the first four years to childhood development, this instability cannot be understated. How much stress does this cause the parents? More importantly, how much do those stressed out parents adversely affect the newborn child?
These questions all assume that the parent(s) are putting their best effort into childrearing. That is not always the case, especially with fathers. While it takes two to tango, potential fathers do not have the same biological urge to protect the fetus they helped to make as mothers. If a man creates an unwanted pregnancy, and he is pro-choice (or is anti-abortion and a hypocrite), it follows that he would want the woman to have an abortion. If this conflicts with the mother’s desire to birth the fetus and raise the child, the man has no recourse to take. If he abandons the mother and child, he will forever be considered a deadbeat father. In addition, he can and most likely will be forced to pay child support for the next 18 years, a practice which can financially cripple the man while failing to provide the child with the support of a second parent. Rather than ruin their reputations and finances, most men choose to stay together despite the disagreement. While this provides the child with a second parent, it does not eliminate the difference in values which created the dilemma. The father will still feel that he is dedicating his time to a child he did not want to create. This will reflect poorly to the mother, who will feel that he is not pulling his weight in the family. As the child ages, they will begin to pick up on this simmering resentment, which they will probably blame on their own existence, creating psychological wounds which may never heal.
These situations and the lost potential they cause are each a preventable tragedy. As such, they should be presented and discussed through this lens. I find it distasteful to romanticize those who govern their lives around the fact that someone once failed to pull out. Just as bad are those who insist they or others marry their partner in pregnancy for the sole benefit of giving the child two parents. These beliefs are products of an antiquated age which the modern world forgot.
What is Life?
The sense of duty that mothers feel towards their fetuses cannot be erased, but if needed, it can be combatted by appealing to the best interest of all relevant parties.
The first step towards this is to determine who the relevant parties are. It goes without saying that a mother is a relevant party to her own pregnancy. In cases where the father is socially or financially responsible for the raising of the potential child, he should be considered a party to this matter.
The point that is the hardest to pin down is whether the fetus itself is a relevant party in the situation (and if so, at what point). To answer this, many fields of thought have proposed starting points for when life begins. If it can be proven that the organism/fetus/baby is human, it follows that it should be protected as other humans are. By establishing when this happens, it would follow that it is when the organism/fetus/baby crosses the Rubicon into our moral community.
In the Overton Window of American society, these answers range from life beginning at conception to life beginning at birth. Most people believe that life begins at some point during pregnancy. I find most of these positions to be lacking in substance.
To explain why consensus is so hard to find on this issue, we should step back from ideology and look at the question of when life begins through the lens of biology. From this approach, the only starting point for life is the abiogenesis some 3.5 billion years ago. All of the world’s life exists from an unbroken chain of that first source. Nowhere in the timeline between abiogenesis and any human currently alive is there a point where their ancestors weren’t living organisms. Using this as our criteria, every living thing that holds human DNA is itself human. Not only does this cover all fetuses, it also extends to the sperm and eggs that combine to create them. Such a broad definition of life may be scientifically correct, but it is unfit for purpose in the present question on morality. If this were taken seriously, every time a man masturbates would be an act of genocide wiping out millions of lives. Similarly, every time a woman menstruates, she would be inflicting climate change on the ovulating eggs, since her uterus is the only natural environment they can survive in. No reasonable moral Rubicon should accuse everyone of reproductive age of homicide.
Since it is now shown that the question of when life begins is a proxy for the question of when someone joins our moral community, I will be focusing on the question of the moral Rubicon.
The belief that life begins at conception takes the idea that anything containing human DNA is human but narrows the definition to the products of two people procreating. Since this only happens during conception, this becomes their starting point for human life. It is worth noting that the definition above does not originate with the argument itself, but was introduced later as DNA became widely understood. Its origins are with the Catholic Church, who believed that all their congregants must follow the commandment to “be fruitful and multiply”. Since conception creates a potential Christian, any attempt to terminate the pregnancy sets back what they consider to be their holy mission. While this reasoning is no longer explicit, it has been widely adopted by the Abrahamic Religions as a way of protecting future children (and therefore expanding their potential congregations). This belief is an extension of the traditionalist view of marriage and family. As such, it gives little regard for the individuals who are affected by its notion of the greater good. The system’s proponents have tried to reconcile this contradiction by personifying the unborn. This has led to mixed results. This standard is based on and requires an outside force to root out the individual’s reproductive control, with no concern for either parent or the child. As such, it cannot coexist with any society based on individual rights and freedoms.
The most common standard of when someone joins our moral community is that it occurs at some point during the pregnancy. In America, the standard for when this happens is at the end of the second trimester. Other nations use a variety of cut-off dates. The reason for the various dates is that zygote/fetal development is a largely amorphous process. While there are many descriptions of developments on a weekly basis, none on these change the fact that a fetus functions as an organ within the woman’s body, rather than an independent lifeform. Attempts to categorize stages of pregnancy such as the trimester system exist purely for the health of the mother. For this reason, using it as the standard of American legal precedent, as in Roe v. Wade[2], is entirely arbitrary. Such a standard exists to be easily understood, not to be logically defended. I recognize the role of this ruling and others like it in providing access to safe abortions. However, this moral Rubicon does not hold up to philosophical or biological scrutiny. For this reason, it is the least defensible of these categories.
The last standard is that the fetus does not join our moral community until it is born. While this seems outlandish to many Americans, it is already the standard used in various countries, including our northern neighbor. The reasoning behind this standard is largely the same as for allowing abortion at all; A pregnancy is a personal matter which outside forces have no right to control. Even if one believes that the unborn have some moral weight, this is outweighed by the mother’s right to bodily autonomy. Therefore, this position states that abortion should be available at all times with the same readiness that current law provides to early pregnancies.
My Moral Rubicon
Given the way these standards are laid out, you might expect me to say which of these Moral Rubicons are correct. Given my earlier criticism of Conservative moralizing on the family, you might expect me to say that fetuses have no moral worth until their birth. While I support the idea that abortion should be available at all times during a pregnancy, I do not believe that a zygote/fetus only has moral worth after birth.
My standard for when a zygote/fetus enters our moral community is whether the mother intends to raise it as a member of our moral community (i.e. give birth).
If the mother chose to become pregnant and wishes to raise the child, then she and those around her will consider the future child to be part of their moral community as soon as they are aware of it. In this case, the Moral Rubicon happens at the earliest point where its existence can be known, which is conception. This is why pregnant and expectant mothers are given a long list of prohibitions for the protection of their unborn. When one accepts guardianship over the baby on board, they willingly change their behavior for their child’s sake.
Contrast this with an unexpected and/or unwanted pregnancy. If the mother has no desire to bring the pregnancy to term, her autonomy over her body means she should not be forced to do so. If a child is not and will never come to term, it is not part of our moral community.
These two standards exist because of how differently people react to pregnancies depending on circumstance. The idea of a mother overjoyed to raise her child in a loving family is a far cry from discovering she was impregnated by her rapist. Acting as if the moral relationship between the mother and child is the same in both scenarios is an absurd oversimplification.
These absurdities are avoided by basing the Moral Rubicon on the intentions of the mother. The fetus is one of us the first time their mother falls in love with them (or when they are born, whichever is sooner). A love-based standard of moral worth would protect bodily autonomy while recognizing the value of future persons.[3]
As for policy, I advocate for the removal of all restrictions on abortion. When accepting bodily autonomy as a goal, you cannot create a cutoff point at which one’s body exists to serve a life outside their moral community. When a person requests an abortion, this would be their justification.
The Consensual Family
A moral family exists for the benefit of its members. The details of this change depending on the morality of those running it. As discussed earlier, in most places at most times in history, the father was the ruler of the family. His centralized power meant that the effectiveness of the family was measured by his success. This was created by the belief (and fact) that order and obedience were the surest traits for success in premodern societies.
As the trait which brings the most success moves from obedience to openness to change, families have adapted by giving their members more autonomy. The effectiveness of the family is now measured in its benefit to its individual members. If those members don’t have their interests served, they have the means of leaving it. If a spouse feels their partner has not pulled their weight, they may divorce them. When children outgrow the benefits of living with their parents, they are free to make their own way. They have no obligation to serve their parents, despite the immense costs their parents put into raising them. In the case of minors, the state will take over their guardianship if the family is abusing or neglecting them. The goal of such systems is that family is a consensual arrangement.
This goal of informed consent should be expanded to the creation of children. Just as the mother should have final word on controlling her body, the father must have a say in his relationship to the products of his body. At present, the time when the mother can sever legal ties to her potential offspring extends from copulation to when her society deems the fetus to be part of their moral community. The window for men starts and ends with ejaculation. The only foolproof way for them to avoid the responsibility of raising an accidental child is to not have sex in a vagina. This works about as well as promoting abstinence always does(n’t). Such a standard makes no sense in an age where sex and reproduction have been decoupled. In practical terms, the father must be made aware of the birth of his child well in advance. If he did not intend to reproduce, he must have legal recourse to sever his responsibility to the child before it is born. Without such protections, men are as liable for unwanted pregnancies as women in societies which believe that life begins at conception.
Making informed consent a cornerstone of the family has benefits beyond control of parental duties. The informed consent of parents serves the best interests of their children. Even though minors are not capable of providing it themselves, being raised in such an environment means their familial relations exist from a point of trust rather than one of obedience. Just as bans on arranged marriage and access to divorce increase trust between spouses, a policy of deliberate reproduction, as well as child protection laws strengthen trust between parent and child. When equipping a child for life in a high-trust society, the ability to trust in others is one of the most important skills they can have. Therefore, creating the environment for this behavior should be a top priority.[4]
The existence of informed consent between spouses does not guarantee trust between them and their children. Such conditions require that the creation of the child be as intentional as the creation of marriage. If mutual trust is a cornerstone of our society and being born on accident irrevocably damages their ability to trust others, then bringing a person into the world on accident is inherently immoral. If the parents had the means of preventing this but didn’t, it is a selfish act as well. Any deviation is a failure of parenting.
Afterword
This idea begs the question of where the Accidents among us fit into this moral framework. My fear is that this will be compared to the Conservative moralizing I denounced. While I too seek stable families for children’s growth, my reasoning is adapted to the reality of ever-present contraception. It is based on the benefit of individuals rather than the collective or a higher power. These individuals are judged on their character and actions, not how they fit into a greater framework.
This blank slate of moral standing applies to accidents as to anyone else. They come into the world untainted by their parent’s mistakes. As such, the child shares neither their shame nor esteem. This is true even if the mistake in question led to their existence. Passing the guilt of parents onto their children is not only meanspirited, it undermines the Liberal framework my thesis is based on. As such, I oppose any moral distinction between accidents and others.
Another accusation I expect to hear is that I believe that it would be better that a currently living accident were never born. This argument is moot. As discussed above, I believe that children unwanted by their mothers do not enter our moral community until they are born. If they are aborted, they have no rights or interests to protect. Conflating the moral worth of those outside the moral community with those who have entered it is to misunderstand the concept. Those outside the community have no human rights, and we act in their interest at our leisure. When one enters the community, they gain those human rights, as befits any human. However, that does not mean that their human rights retroactively apply before that point.
To illustrate the point, I propose a scenario. Hypothetically, if a person had a dog which they treated like any dog, and then it was magically turned into a human with human intelligence, would the owner be at fault for treating a human like an animal? If the new human remembered being treated like a dog, would it be logical for them to be bitter about their previous treatment? In both cases, the answer is no. Humans and animals are treated by different moral standards because humans are sentient, and animals are not. If an animal somehow entered the moral community of humans, they would be entitled to the human rights of anyone else.[5] At the same time, people who interacted with the dog before the transformation cannot be at fault for putting it in the logical moral category. Provided the former dog is treated as an equal of other humans, no wrong has been committed.
Dogs, like the fetus discussed above, are not part of our moral community. Their interests, if considered at all, are subservient to those of humans. These facts are irrelevant to what they might become later on.
Anyone who crosses the moral Rubicon holds the same inalienable moral worth as any human. What they were or how they were treated before doesn’t matter. My belief that the fetus in question should have been aborted has no bearing on whether or not the person it grows up to be would be better off unborn. I would never hold that as a default position, even if I somehow knew a person was an accident before meeting them.
Footnotes
[1] The families that develop in any given environment are those whose children are best able to perpetuate its values. The process by which society settles on a system has just as much to do with natural selection as it does with deliberate moralizing.
[2] Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973).
[3] This should not be conflated with the legal status of unborn children.
[4] One obvious scenario where parents cannot provide informed consent to childrearing is if one or both parents are too young to give informed consent. In such cases, childrearing cannot be in the benefit of the child involved. Therefore, minors should not be entrusted with the raising of children. This is the same logic used to bar them from voting. If you are not mentally equipped to be one decision-maker among millions in your nation, how can you be entrusted to be one decision-maker among two (at best) controlling the life of a fellow minor? Such arrangements only exist because puberty does not correlate with the age of consent. No one seriously believes that minors are capable of childrearing, only that they are stuck in their situation. If it is recognized to be detrimental for all parties, it should not be created in the first place.
[5] It is worth noting the reverse situation is not true. In stories where people are turned into animals, they are typically marked as separate from other animals and treated as a human wherever possible. Despite the absurdity of the scenario, various traditions come to the same idea. This shows the permanence of the moral Rubicon. Once a person enters it, they are part of the moral community no matter what.
