the only time i’ve ever mentioned mononoke on this blog is to enthuse about #formativeinfluences as though my childhood matters to anyone but me and i’m glad i finally have a practical real-world reason to reference it

Christopher Reeve died on October 10th 2004. The above text selection is taken from his collection of essays, Nothing is Impossible: Reflections on a New life. Below is a still from his speaking appearance at the 1996 Democratic National Convention in which he forcefully advocated for science, medical research and social programs that actually extended the notion of family values, of the American family, to everyone. His speech was not without controversy of course,.There are many activists who think his advocacy focused too much on narratives of suffering and curing, and too narrow of a vision of the quality of life. I don't think that's entirely Fair. As the above quote from his his essay collection demonstrates, even the most famous and privileged individuals who have disabilities, are not immune from the amount of structural barriers and challenges to travel and inclusion. For as much philosophical hand winging as his advocacy for medical advancements and curing caused, his foundation did and still does a tremendous amount of work in terms of accessibility grants. Physical therapy fellowships and lobbying for accessible spaces and independent living arrangements. And he was open about the challenges he faced in everyday life as a way of shining a light on those existing barriers for people not as economically privileged is he was. I don't blame him for relentlessly pursuing regaining his ability to walk and live physically independently. I was 9 years old in August of 1996. I had never seen a wheelchair user command an audience. And I had never even considered one could continue directing, acting producing, writing while using a wheelchair . I think about how effective he and his platform could be the current political climate alongside the Relentless Heroes and heroines of adapt and other advocacy group., reminding everyone of the human cost of cutbacks and a lack of purposeful inclusion. I miss seeing him the act in a new project. Watch some of his work today, dare to dream. and make it into some kind of reality. #christopherreeve #advocacy #formativeinfluence #rip #christopheranddanareevefoundation #nothingisimpossible #dnc1996
