The Mirror Trees
“Run!" yelled Rogon the Rhino as he charged down the narrow jungle path.
The eight Chima warriors ran and flew down the trail, flanked on either side by the strange plant life of the Outlands. Behind them a swarm of Bats filled the sky, their leather-like wings flapping and their shrieks piercing the air. Now and then, a handful of the Bats would dive, forcing the heroes to duck for cover.
When the Bats had first appeared, Eris and a reluctant Razar had flown up to try and drive them off. But there were dozens and dozens of the new enemies to contend with, and the Eagle and Raven were quickly forced back.
"Look for a cave we can hide in," said Bladvic the Bear.
He was a big fan of caves, since they were dark and cool and great for sleeping.
"Bats love caves," Eris reminded him. "We would be trapped in there."
Worriz ducked as a Bat's spear flew past him. "What if we split up and scatter?" he suggested. "We might be able to confuse them long enough to get away."
"There are too many of them, my friend," said Razar. "Even divided, there would be ten bats for each one of us."
"He's right," said Eris. "We can't beat them with the normal tactics. We need a new strategy, or a new weapon, or faster wings and feet!"
"That's your brilliant plan?" Cragger grumbled as he jumped over a snapping Predator Plant's jaws. "Run faster'? I thought Eagles were supposed to be experts at coming up with strategies."
"We are!" insisted Eris. "Just not while under attack."
"Guys, there's no time for arguing!" Laval exclaimed. "We have to do something before those Bats chase us off a cliff!"
Rogon tore through some bushes, the others close behind. Just ahead of them was a small clearing with grove of trees. But the closer the heroes got, the more they realized that the trees were unusual. They were rather short and had shiny, silver leaves that seemed to be made of metal. And the leaves were cupped so that they looked like upside-down bowls.
Let's get under those trees," cried Laval. "Maybe they will give us some protection."
The eight heroes took cover. Gorzan examined one of the leaves and was amazed to find that he could see his reflection in it.
"Hey," he exclaimed. "I can see myself. Groovy!"
"So can I," said Razar, running a clawed hand through his feathers. "And I look goooood."
"They're coming," Laval interrupted. "Get ready."
"They're coming, get ready, they're coming, get ready, they're coming, get ready”
"We heard you the first time!" Cragger snapped.
"That wasn't me." said Laval. "Those are echoes, but I don't know where they're coming from.
Laval looked up through some of the branches on the shiny tree. Yes, the black cloud of Bats was heading their way. Then, right before his eyes, something strange happened. The Bats dove toward the trees in a tight formation, but as they got close, they started flying in crazy patterns and doing loops.
Over the next few minutes, each Bat attack ended the same way: Just before the Bats reached the treetops, they would start acting confused and scatter.
“What's going on here?" asked Cragger, his words echoing all around. "They're acting like they have been out in the sun too long."
"I don't know," said Laval. "It doesn't make any sense. First, they're chasing us, and then as soon as we went under these trees-"
“Yeah, the trees," said Razar, his eyes on the leaves. “Mavbe they don't like seeing themselves in these little mirrors, yes? They have faces even a mother Bat wouldn’t love."
High above, the Bats were shrieking in what sounded like anger. Razar cocked his head and said, "Wait a second. Bats don't see well, do they? So they couldn't see themselves in the leaves, no matter how ugly they are."
“That's right!" Eris cried excitedly. "Bats don't rely on their eyes-they use sonar to find their way around."
“Sonar?" asked Cragger. "What's that?"
“The Bats are using sound waves as their 'eyes,' Eris explained. "When they cry out, the sounds bounce off objects so they can tell where things are."
“Of course,” said Laval. “If the leaves are bouncing the Bats' cries around the same way they made our voices echo, it could be making their sonar 'blind'!"
Eris looked up through the branches. High above, the Bats were getting ready for another attack. "I have an idea,” she said. "Everyone grab as many leaves as you can."
"What good will that do?" asked Worriz.
"Just trust me," Eris insisted, handing out the shiny leaves to her friends. "All set?" she asked. "Now, run -and throw those leaves!"
The eight heroes dashed out from beneath the trees. Immediately, the Bats went into a dive. But before they could reach their targets, Eris and the others started throwing the leaves high into the air until it looked like a silver rainstorm going from the ground up to the sky.
Already too close, the Bats suddenly found themselves with no idea where to go as the cloud of leaves messed up their sonar.
Bats collided with one another, slammed into trees, and some even flew upside down as the leaves fluttered down to the ground. By the time the Bats could "see" again, Laval and the others were long gone.
Once the friends were out of danger, they stopped to catch their breath.
"Whew," said Gorzan. “I guess that's one time the strange things in the Outlands helped us. Good thing these groovy trees were there.”
“Yeah.” Laval nodded. "And it's a good thing Eris figured out what to do with those leaves, otherwise we might have been stuck there forever. Looks like Eagles are the masters of strategy after all, huh, Cragger?”
Cragger grumbled but then nodded his head in agreement. "Yeah, I guess you're right."
Eris smiled. "Thanks. But, it looks like my plan didn’t just work at distracting the Bats." She pointed toward Razar. The Raven was holding up one of the mirror leaves, staring at his reflection in the shiny surface.
Eris giggled. “I think those leaves have a secret power over Ravens, too."
"What can I say, my friend?" Razar grinned at his reflection. "If I'm looking good, I'm looking good."

An Essay on X-Men’s Krakoa Era
Reflecting on the Krakoan Era, it's challenging to express my overall feelings, especially considering its anticlimactic conclusion. Nevertheless, documenting my thoughts now might help me see if my perspective changes in the future.
Few comics have thrilled me like HoX/PoX did. Each issue was a whirlwind of excitement, and the peak moments remain unmatched within the era. While I have favorite individual issues, such as S.W.O.R.D. #3, Hickman's introduction to the Krakoan Era stands out as a near-unparalleled body of work.
Dawn of X was inconsistent. Despite high hopes for Hickman's solo run, there were significant highs and lows. Issues like X-Men #4, #7, and #11 stood out, but others, like X-Men #3, were disappointing. Hickman's run mainly laid groundwork for other writers, which, though not bad, wasn't what I anticipated.
Brisson’s New Mutants was forgettable, only serving to introduce the Goblin Queen, who later became vital in Ayala’s run. Hill's Fallen Angels had high concepts but lacked character depth, leading to its early cancellation, though it did set the stage for Wells’ Hellions.
Howard’s Excalibur, mainly setting up the X of Swords crossover, felt like it was biding time until the event. Duggan’s Marauders, especially post-issue #21, also failed to impress. Percy’s X-Force and Wolverine, spanning the entire era, suffered from a lack of editorial direction, though they might be viewed more favorably in the future.
The six initial titles were serviceable but often underwhelming. The collaborative effort behind the launch masked many of their weaknesses. In the second wave, Duggan’s Cable, William’s X-Factor, and Wells’ Hellions were standout titles, making the loss of X-Factor particularly disappointing.
Reign of X felt like a reset post-X of Swords, with Ewing's S.W.O.R.D. launching strong despite crossover disruptions. Ayala’s New Mutants consistently delivered, but her Children of the Atom was lackluster. Spurrier’s contributions were solid and crucial to the era.
Howard’s post-crossover work lost my interest, and her X-Corp series failed to captivate. The first Hellfire Gala was a storytelling highlight, while Ewing’s Guardians of the Galaxy crossover added value to the era’s narrative.
The lead-up to Hickman’s Inferno saw cancellations like William’s X-Factor for the Trial of Magneto, which didn’t align with Inferno as intended. Inferno itself was a fitting end to Hickman’s run, setting the stage for Gillen’s rise.
Gillen’s Immortal, Ewing’s Red, and LaValle’s Sabretooth series were post-Hickman highlights. Gillen’s Immortal distilled his earlier work, while Ewing and Spurrier continued building on their respective stories.
Duggan’s era was mixed; his Cable run was excellent, and early X-Men issues were strong, but later work suffered due to crossover interruptions and inconsistent quality. The A.X.E. event, while a capstone to Gillen’s Eternals, disrupted Duggan’s X-Men narrative with little to no consequences to the Krakoan Era.
The final phase, Fall of X, included many filler issues but also some gems. Spurrier’s work with Kurt and Ewing’s strong finish stood out. Overall, despite the bloat, 61% of the nearly 725 issues from the Krakoan Era remain cherished.
In terms of the overall lore and mythos of Krakoa, it's still dubious whether it had a significant impact. Few characters really stood out, as the era was driven more by plot than by character development. Historically, the X-Men have thrived on rich character narratives that created a soap opera effect. However, this era focused more on showcasing what characters could do rather than exploring their interpersonal relationships, which were deeply underdeveloped.
Standout characters like Professor X, Destiny, Emma Frost, and Magneto, primarily members of the Quiet Council, were given prominence, while 90% of the rest of the X-Men were underutilized. This is disappointing, as the era's format seemed perfect for deep character-driven stories. Characters like Jean Grey, Hellion, Cyclops, and Legion, among others, had opportunities for development that fell flat. The era lacked consistent and balanced character narration and plot development that made earlier X-Men stories compelling, marking one of its weakest points.
As we move forward to the next era, "From the Ashes," the general sentiment I believe is emblimised across the fandom is mixed cautious, optimism and excitement. Fans hope for a return to the tight, cohesive storytelling that characterized the best of the Krakoan Era, with a renewed focus on character development and innovative plots. The hope is that the lessons learned from the highs and lows of the past years will guide the creative teams to deliver stories that resonate deeply with the readers, balancing epic narratives with intimate character moments.
Krakoa Forever.

Last Song I Listened To:
"You" by Tennyson! it's a sweet little song and i use it for my qpr-in-my-series playlist. "What's the point of that? I could be pressing flowers with you. Savor all this time rather than fret all afternoon. Take me from my thoughts, now would be riper than limes in June." so soft.
Last Book I Read:
The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle is the last book i finished. phenomenal book. absolutely wonderful on a craft level. It pushes the reader to question the role of a black main character in an american horror, pushes the reader to question what constitutes horror is for black americans, and in that push answers your question for you, delicately, carefully. Deserves all the praise it got. Recontextualizes one of the most racist lovecraft stories and shows the character of Black Tom's humanity even as Black Tom tries to leave humanity behind. also. sentence level? so fucking good. down to the sentence it's so good.
I'm currently in the middle of like 15 books but off the top of my head
Witch King by Martha Wells
Dreadgod by Will Wight
To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis
On the Shoulders of Titans by Andrew Rowe
The Future Is Disabled by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha which feels more like a manifesto than anything else so im not really getting as much out of it bc disabled people on tumblr have been talking about the contents of this manifesto since 2015 or earlier
The League of Gentlewomen Witches by India Holton
The Last Sun by K.D. Edwards
Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl by Andrea Lawlor
Way of the Hunter by Samer Rabadi
Female Masculinity by Jack Halberstam
Coming up, I'm doing a buddy read soon of The Black Shoals: Offshore Formations of Black and Native Studies by Tiffany Lethabo King with @markeyverse and a buddy read of The Cooking Gene: A Journey of African American Culinary History in the Old South by Michael W. Twitty with @toopunkrockforshul and a book club read of When the Angels Left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb
Last Thing I Watched:
Star Trek: The Next Generation. I simply don't Watch things these days, unless we count youtube, in which I have watched Drawfee's "Driving from Washington to Mexico for Charity" to cope with grief bc omg you do not need your brain for that. it's comforting. and also my roommate is obsessed with Azerbaijani Village Cooking Videos and points out different foods and how like the ones he grew up with they are and how they differ from Georgian and Russian preparation and consumption and he tells me the names of the food and what they taste like. so we watch that almost every night if i dont fall asleep first.
Current Obsession:
my own work tbh. my poetry, my fiction, my paintings. trying to get better. i suppose outside of that. hm. my interest is turning toward gay nuns as of yesterday with a Realization of christian religious trauma being more real than i thought. im looking at "Immodest Acts", "Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence", "Scorched Grace: A Sister Holiday Mystery", and im hoping "Sisters of Sorrow" is gay bc if its not what the fuck are you doing. but i cant delve into them all yet nor buy them yet. and im trying to prioritize my TBR.
i'm also reading eco-justice poetry/nonfiction, afrofuturist, transformative justice, disabled, and solarpunk literature for my solarpunk wip

i have images for every archetype on the list now, but i lost track of time and ended up staying up way too late. oops.
Don't worry about having missed the submission window or something like that! No matter how many submissions I get, i'll figure out some way to make it work. and once i decide when to stop taking submissions, i'll be sure to make it clear to everyone when that will be ahead of time.
here's the current list, by the way! key: bold: someone has specifically submitted it and it will not be deleted except in special cases italic: i put it in myself and there is the chance it will be deleted to make the number of entrants more convienent Since i copypasted it the formatting may be messed up a bit. sorry.
there's also a document where i keep this info and more up-to-date so check that out

Capture Memorable Moments with an Audio Guest Book in Laval and Montreal
What Is an Audio Guest Book?
An audio guest book is a service where guests can leave recorded voice messages. It typically features a vintage-style telephone or modern recording device set up at the event, where guests pick up the receiver, speak into it, and leave a message. These messages are saved and compiled for the event host to keep as a personal, audible memory. From heartfelt tributes to funny stories and best wishes, an Audio Guest Book Laval captures the true essence of each guest’s experience.
Audio guest books have become increasingly popular in Laval and Montreal, adding an exclusive, modern flair to events. By using an audio guest book, event hosts can give guests a unique experience that not only lets them express themselves freely but also allows the host to enjoy the replay of those memories in a way that written messages can’t offer.
Why Choose an Audio Guest Book for Your Laval or Montreal Event?
Choosing an audio guest book for your event in Laval or Montreal can bring multiple benefits to both you and your guests. Here’s why:
Adds a Personal Touch: Traditional guest books may lack the depth of emotion that can come through in a voice. In an audio guest book, each voice inflection, laugh, or tear-filled message can be heard and felt, making the memories much more vivid and heartfelt.

How an Audio Guest Book Works
For those planning an event in Laval or Montreal, incorporating an audio guest book is straightforward. It starts with selecting a provider that offers an easy-to-use audio recording system, such as a vintage phone or an interactive tablet with a recording app.
Set Up the Station: At the event, the audio guest book setup typically includes a phone or recording device, placed in an accessible area with clear signage or instructions. Guests simply pick up the receiver and leave their message. Some setups even allow guests to leave more than one message, perfect for those who might want to share a funny memory and a heartfelt wish.
Encourage Guests to Participate: Guests can be shy at first, so make it fun and inviting. Place a little reminder near the audio guest book encouraging them to share a memory, offer a piece of advice, or give their best wishes.
Receive Your Compiled Messages: After the event, the provider will compile all messages into an audio file or digital format for you to keep. These recordings are often enhanced or edited to optimize audio quality.
Choosing the Right Audio Guest Book Service in Laval and Montreal
For a truly memorable experience, it’s essential to select a reliable audio guest book service provider in Laval or Montreal. Look for a company with a reputation for quality and ease of use, ensuring the setup is intuitive for guests of all ages. Professional service providers will often provide customization options, allowing you to personalize the audio guest book experience with custom prompts, specific phone models, or even visual touches to match your event’s theme.

The Ballad of Black Tom | Victor LaValle
This novella is a retelling of H. P. Lovecraft’s story “The Horror at Red Hook.” I have not personally read the Lovecraft story but what I can say is that this is a tight 149 page atmospheric cosmic horror story. If you're looking for a creepy story that you can read or listen to quickly, I'd recommend it.
I did listen to the audiobook and was entertained that the narrator also does the Murderbot diaries.

For other Duel Terminal Synchros that use pre-ARC-V text format, Vylons, and Lavals seem to have the most remaining, 2 for each. Vylons, and Lavals also have Xyz Monsters that use the pre-ARC-V text format, which means they are likely to get reprinted.
Lavals got some of their cards reprinted as part of Selection 10, so they might be delayed a bit further.
Flamvells, X-Sabers, and Allies of Justice both have 1 Synchro with pre-ARC-V text format.
