Taka is the name of Tonto’s eagle in the 1966 Lone Ranger cartoon series from Format Films made for CBS. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lone_Ranger_(1966_TV_series)) . . I was watching “Curse of the Devil Doll” on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kCKp1X_fXk) the 2nd segment of the 20th episode. Most or all of the episodes in this series fall into the #WeirdWest and/or #Horror category. . . What I find extra interesting about this episode is that the Lone Ranger doesn’t show up so it is up to Tonto and Taka to sort the situation and bring the bad guy to justice. . . If you go searching for Tonto’s bird on Google, you end up with a ton of articles asking why Johnny Depp had a bird on his head. Which it seems like the better question is why Johnny Depp doesn’t always have a bird on his head. But not a ton of info about Taka until you rewatch the episode, careful to listen for the name Tonto calls his bird. Then you find out that Marx Toys made a toy of the eagle, the mold of which was also used by Mattel for their Big Jim series and later for the Masters of the Universe line. . . I had either the Taka or Big Jim eagle. And finding that help me identify some old toys I had as being part of the Marx Safari Adventure toy line. . . Also I found an article in the Village Voice from 1970 where apparently the eagle was a huge mistake and was blamed for the failure of the cartoon series. Which explains why Taka doesn’t show up in other Lone Ranger projects. I haven’t read the whole article yet, just some as I stitched it together in a more readable format for here.
