Madlena was never the type to have just one favorite, but rather a series of favorites she went through claiming one to be her favorite over the other at any given day...or if her brother Luka tried to take a toy she wasn’t playing with, then it became her absolute favorite and how dare he! But her rotating favorites were as followed: a handcrafted Croatian doll from Zagreb her tata gave her from one of his trips to the capital, dressed in the traditional garments of her culture, a ballerina doll with long legs, a pink tutu and a gold crown, Beauty and the Beast snow globe Mateo brought her back from his trip to Paris (with a visit to Disneyland Paris) but forgot which princess was her favorite, a hand painted matryoshka doll from her mother’s childhood and the holiday favorite given to Madlena when she danced the part of young Clara in the local ballet performance of The Nutcracker, a nutcracker. 

But even with all those toys there was one favorite game that only came around once a year during Christmas. It was a game from her father’s childhood, all the children would gather around and stack walnuts in groups of three; two on the bottom and one on top. Then they would flick a fourth from a distance trying to knock over the group of three. It was simple but it was one of her favorite games to play.

Tata Ivan had a private tutor for Mateo, Luka, Lucija and Madlena teaching the children English when they were young, but Madlena was probably the most annoying out of all of them when it came to repeating certain phrases. From what she has been told and what little she was able to remember, the Mary Poppins of an English tutor, all the way from Manchester, England, was somewhat of a role model for the youngest Croatian. Also the reason she attempted an English accent that probably to this day will make Mia cringe. But one phrase Madlena repeated as a child was one coined by her tutor and one that no one wanted to hear again, but it truly was, “PERFECTLY SPLENDID!” A phrase that will slip past her lips every now and then, accompanied with the attempted English accent of course.

What had started with an innocent and anything but scary conversation on the holiday at hand, Halloween, would quickly turn into something else. Madlena stood by the boats with her arms crossed against her chest. Her shoulders were hunched forward and she constantly tapped her feet on the ground whenever the cool breeze blew in her direction. Still, she smiled through the cold wind and went on about a favorite topic, Disney. “You should see Disneyland Paris during the holidays. In October, there are pumpkins everywhere and they have a parade with lights and —” 

The Croatian’s words were abruptly cut off when someone covered in a white sheet had pushed their way through the line of people waiting for the boat ride all to yell, “BOO!” and reach out to grab the unsuspecting princess. Now, as much as Madlena would like to claim nothing scared her, that couldn’t have been further from the truth. In reality, everything scared her. Even seconds after the attempted scare her delayed reaction was to step back in fright and reach for the blonde princess who wasn’t there, because Arianna wasn’t anywhere near Madlena as of late. So, Cathal was going to be the person she clung to, quickly wrapping her arms around him. A clingy hug that came out of instinct and if the person in white had come back around the Irish prince would more than likely be pushed d in front of Madlena to save herself. But for now she just looked up to the prince with an apologetic grin. “If I saw it coming I wouldn’t have been scared, obviously.” She gave one final squeeze of her arms around him before releasing him from the embrace.  “I wasn’t even scared, I just was...startled.” Because that obviously wasn’t a synonym or anything, nope.
