It had been a while since Ford walked into Merlotte's and spent an honest good evening there.
In the last two years since vampires had been discovered, he knew to stay away from the place—most places, actually, where a high volume of humans could be found. It was relatively easy considering he didn't need to grocery shop and any sort of social activity could be done at vampire bars or hotels that had kept themselves relatively contained under the guise of exclusivity. But before vampires became part of the global lexicon, he'd pop into neighborhood places like Merlotte's every so often. If only to remember what it was like to be human, even though it took feigning a disgusting glass of grape wine to sit through.
Around these parts, they say some things never change, but he knew better than that. When you've been alive for as long as he has, on the surface, all the algae on the swamp is just as murky-green—the hicks are still hicks. Underneath it, though, are layers of sediment and rock, spongy peat that soaks everything up—the hicks always find something new to complain about, keeping humans right at the very edge of evolving to a higher intelligence than what they're capable of.
Only every now and then in Bon Temps did someone come in and threaten to throttle all those years of grimy bog. Somebody who thought differently. And someone who wasn't afraid to speak their mind. The way the girl spoke to Mrs. Fortenberry like a mother berating a child (maybe a touch more cruel than that, honestly) told Ford a few things: One, that she was that very girl who dared to throttle, and two, she had a functioning enough brain to debate. Those combined, he had to guess she wasn't from around here.
(Not that he would fully know, since everyone in Merlotte's was a new face to him. Except Mrs. Fortenberry's, who seemed to simultaneously age and stay looking the same. She could potentially rival vampires one day...)
He wasn't much of a talker—not even amongst his own kind—so when the girl didn't just give him a half-hearted chuckle and a polite smile before walking away, he realized the hole he'd dug himself into. Not because she'd snapped at him—that, he could handle. But because she seemed apologetic about it, and was now the first person in Merlotte's to acknowledge him despite the fact he'd been sitting here for about half an hour.
He adjusted his hat, but kept his face low. Ford wasn't necessarily trying to hide he was a vampire, because that was the sort of thing you couldn't miss these days. He was pale and stoic and didn't other vampires have that kind of dark aura to them? (He wasn't 100% certain. That was just something his dumb sister Soleil, also a vampire, once told him.) But he felt somewhat self-conscious now, her eyes on him. And her smile, even if it was a forced one, glowed. She was so... human.
"A girl named Tara? No, ain't seen her." The bar had been relatively empty for the last half hour. Maybe others could sense he was a vampire, but what was more likely was that at this hour, everyone who would be sitting at the bar had stumbled to the pool tables or at other booths to comingle. Everybody knew somebody around here. He looked up at her behind the brim of his cap, a raggedy Smith Ferry and Farm hat, a relic from his family business.
"I'll take a Tru Blood."
a woman condemned to a life in bon temps. that’s what jeannie oh felt like, at least. she was a prisoner in the small, northeastern louisiana town that her father had moved to after years in shreveport. she was a prisoner because she blew up her figure skating career, and her mother couldn’t stand to look at her because she hadn’t gone on to the olympics (and stopped the gravy train). she was a prisoner because she was stuck living in her dad’s house with her annoying stepmother and admittedly pretty cute but disruptive toddler half-sister. she was stuck in a merlotte’s uniform with its tiny shorts and skin-tight t-shirt because she had been fired from the local big lots for being smartmouthed with the customers. all those things combined made her nigh insufferable, and she wanted to inflict her emotional pain on everyone that crossed her path.
sam merlotte refused to fire her despite many people advising him to—he took pity on her childish dramatics, believing it to come from a place of hurt and responded that jeannie was just a kid despite being twenty-four—and she couldn’t stand most of the people that walked through the restaurant’s doors. she only had two or three coworkers she could actually tolerate, and most customers begged the hostess not to seat them in jeannie’s section since she would no doubt somehow offend them. they offended her by not being the glamorous, cold people she knew back up north when she was still skating.
in short: everyone in bon temps was a stupid hick and she hated this fucking town!
then, of course, there were the murders. jeannie somehow kept the thought that they were lucky to leave bon temps even if it was through death to herself, though that was the only thing she kept to herself. a masterclass in self-restraint, she thought. it seemed every table that night just had to voice their thoughts on the victims and their supposed killers—they were sluts; that’s what they get for fangbangin’; that was why you could never trust a vampire; boy those fellowship of the sun people on tv know what they’re talkin’ ‘bout.
it was all so annoying. out of sense to be a contrarian rather than a vampire rights activist, jeannie fought with anyone she heard talking about the subject. in her opinion, vampires at least had the advantage of being interesting. everyone else in town had lived small, quiet lives that no one could envy. not like jeannie, worldly skater who had actually been to europe before and, at one time, owned a burberry purse.
clearly, no matter what she could say, it would all fall on deaf ears. no one actually cared about her opinion, despite how strongly she proclaimed it. “oh, whatever.” jeannie rolled her eyes, clutching onto the refill pitcher of water in her hands. she wanted to dump it in maxine fortenberry’s lap. “as if a vampire don’t have better things to do than pick off miss catfish bon temps pageant runner-ups all night. i don’t know what you’re so afraid of either, miss fortenberry. vampires wouldn’t even look twice at your old, wrinkled neck.”
with that, jeannie left the table without refilling maxine’s glass, ignoring the older woman’s protests about being mighty thirsty. instead, she returned to the bar and slammed the tray down on the bartop before she caught the gravelly voice speaking to her. slowly, she turned to the man and gave him an irritated sneer. “what’s it to you?”
still, it had been a long time since someone called her smart. most people just called her a bitch. sighing, jeannie decided that he would be the one customer that she was nice to today. putting her hands on the counter, she glanced down at the sink before she attempted to give him a pleasant smile. “some people don’t have a lick of sense, and they all happen to live here.” she looked around the table and didn’t see any drinks or food in front of him. “are you waiting to be served or somethin’? normally, tara takes care of all this up here, but she’s got an attitude worse than mine.” rather, she rivaled jeannie on the matter, but that was what made them get along most of the time: mutual hatred for the public.
#someotherdog#c. ford#ford x jeannie#ford x jeannie 001#okay i made it so that they were strangers and#that this was ford's first time at merlotte's at least since vamps became a Thing?#i hope this works!!!!#i'm already excited for their dynamic#as always i stan ur writing and#true blood is <333 i am so glad we're embracing it#so hot queue hurting my feelings

Tyler Perry Dedicates Sound Stage To Diahann Carroll At His Studios' Star-Studded Grand Opening + Beyonce Flaunts Her Curves In Sparkly Lemon Colored Gown
Tyler Perry celebrated the grand opening of his Tyler Perry Studios and all the YBF stars aligned for the gala. Deets on Tyler dedicating a sound studio to the late Diahann Carroll, Beyonce serving up fierce lemonade realness, plus all the celebs who hit the carpet inside…
Yesterday, Tyler Perry celebrated the opening of his Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta, which is the first black-owned major film studio. Yep. Tyler is making some real boss moves in the industry and several of your faves came out to show him support.
The actor/director/writer unveiled his state-of-the-art Tyler Perry Studios, which sit on 330-acres. The mega studio has already hosted big projects like his MADEA films along with AMC’s “Walking Dead” and Marvel’s blockbuster hit Black Panther. It’s considered one of the largest production studios in the country with 12 soundstages, 40 buildings on-site that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and more than 200 acres of green space.
One of those soundstages has been dedicated to legendary actress Diahann Carroll, who passed away on Friday following a long bout with cancer. Tyler hopped on Instagram to pay tribute to the “Julia” actress, sharing how he had previously planned to pay tribute to the iconic actress before her passing.
”In less than 24 hours I was scheduled to dedicate a sound stage at my new studio to Diahann Carroll,” he wrote. “As I sat reviewing her video tribute, I got a request to call her daughter when she told me of her Mother’s passing. I did what I could to try and comfort her in this difficult time, but I know no words could soothe, however I prayed that it would."
He said Stage 5 in Tyler Perry Studios will forever hold the legacy Diahann Carroll left behind.
”I know you will live on in our hearts, but I’m so glad to know that your name will live on at Stage 5 at Tyler Perry Studios. Thank you for letting me honor you, and thank you for lending your legend to my studio to inspire generations to come. Rest well, as I know you are traveling to heaven on a first class cloud. You wouldn’t have had it any other way. God bless you. Love to your family.”

In less than 24 hours I was scheduled to dedicate a sound stage at my new studio to Diahann Carroll. As I sat reviewing her video tribute, I got a request to call her daughter when she told me of her Mother’s passing. I did what I could to try and comfort her in this difficult time, but I know no words could soothe, however I prayed that it would. I hung up the phone and sat back for a moment and was about to be overcome with sadness. Just as that was about to happen, I received a wave of gratitude. I was so thankful in my soul because I got to be on the planet at the same time as this barrier breaking, race shattering, mythical beauty, that will forever be Diahann Carroll. Thank you Ms. Carroll for how you showed the world that black people are special, strong, beautiful and powerful. I know you will live on in our hearts, but I’m so glad to know that your name will live on at Stage 5 at Tyler Perry Studios. Thank you for letting me honor you, and thank you for lending your legend to my studio to inspire generations to come. Rest well, as I know you are traveling to heaven on a first class cloud. You wouldn’t have had it any other way. God bless you. Love to your family.

When I tell you all of us Harlem folk were so happy to see each other at the grand opening of #TylerPerryStudios it’s an understatement! @diddy said look at us & I had to say AMEN because we go way back to him driving a Jetta & me living at 3647 Broadway! @terrellish is my #StyleChild who I’ve mentored since he was 25 & he’s also a Harlemite who has worked with Puff, it was a full circle moment! It was an auspicious occasion, as the photos & stories come out about this weekend, here’s the theme in advance, DARE TO DREAM BIG, EXTRAVAGANTLY & LAVISHLY! RIP #diahanncarroll your soundstage is a dream realized, gone but never forgotten!

Last year @tylerperry came on #Bevelations @radioandysxm & we had an absolute blast (as we always do)! He told me about the magnificent studio he was building, he was so proud that parts of #BlackPanther were filmed there! He was most proud that a Black man from NOLA now owned one of the largest film studios in the world & it was housed on former Confederate land! He promised me that when the studio opened I would be invited & viola had a seat (a really prime one) at the table! Last night was one of the highlights of my year, it was a divine balm to what is ailing many of us Black folk in the face of a racist regime! As @ledisi so beautifully sang last night (with no rehearsal) #WeRiseUp

1969 Dodge Dart GTS: Over Four Decades with the Talley Family
Sometimes Mopar Muscle feature cars are hiding in plain sight. That was the case with this rare A-Body, owned by John and Charlotte Talley, who split time living in Missouri where they grew up and Southern California where they’re active members of the Drifters Car Club of Southern California. And by hiding in plain sight, I mean I’m a member of the same club and have admired their 1969 Dodge Dart GTS (GT Sport) 383 four-speed convertible, a car John bought brand new from the Jimmy Mitchell Motors in Aurora, Missouri, in 1972 after it had served time for three years as one of the dealership’s demo cars.
John comes from a Mopar-owning family and his first car was a 1965 Plymouth Satellite with a 383 automatic that would barely run, bought for $250, that required a self-tune-up performed at the selling dealer. John gave the car to his twin brother and purchased another Belvedere, a 1964 convertible.
While working at a filling station in Kansas City, he saw a 1969 Dodge Dart GTS convertible, a bright yellow one, while on his lunch hour and stopped in to take a look. “Believe it or not,” says John, “the salesman wouldn’t let me take it for a spin without my dad since I was only 16. In retrospect, I understand why. So I called my dad and started talking about the car getting ready to ask him if he’d come to take a look at it with me when he started to laugh. He had already seen and driven the car and said, ‘I don’t think I’d let your brother have it, but I think you’re responsible enough not to kill yourself in it.’ I have to admit, I may have run the car a few times a little too hard, but I always had sense enough to know where and when to do it.” That was 45 years ago.
Back in the early 1970s, the Talley family was all-in for Mopars. John’s dad, Big Jim, had a four-speed 1967 Chrysler 300 with a 440. His mom, Wyanda, drove a 1969 Plymouth station wagon with a 383. After moving past the 1965 Belvedere, John’s twin brother Jim acquired a 1970 Challenger RT Convertible with a 440. John’s younger brother, Jack, owned a 1969 Dodge Super Bee with a 383. John’s sister Debra, not to be left out, drove a 1967 Charger with a 383 while his other sister Jeannie, drove a 1964 Dodge Dart convertible with a Slant-Six engine. Driving by the Talley house one would have thought it was a Chrysler-Dodge dealership.
When John went to license the car in 1972, he found that it had never been titled. It was a special order for an Aurora, Missouri, car dealership, which he later found out was Jimmy Mitchell Motors. John visited the dealership several years ago, but they had been sold and relocated to a new location and had no records that far back.
From 1972 to 1976 John put over 100,000 miles on the car, and in 1976, he married his high school sweetheart Charlotte (that’s John and Charlotte in the archive photo in their matching striped shirts). The family became their priority, and the car was relegated to the garage. Moving to new homes, the car moved with them. Charlotte threatened to sell it several times until they could afford to get homes with multiple garages, so the car didn’t sit outside. “My daughter even ratted me out once,” says John. “I took her for a ride and another car came up beside me. I got on it a little bit with her in the car. As soon as we got home she told her mom, ‘Daddy’s car went vroom, vroom.’ That ended those leisurely rides with the daughter. My son is still waiting on me, as he wants me to kick the bucket, so he can inherit the car and smoke the tires off it.”
Eventually, the car went to John’s parents’ home, where my dad had a large garage in a little town called Missouri City, Missouri, along the Missouri River where they lived for many years. Their home had never flooded, even though the river had risen over the years, but never got as high as the house, at least not till 1993. “The water not only flooded the house and garage, but for four days it was under water,” recalls John. It was the worst flood in generations. So, when we pulled it out, it was time to get it restored.”
John’s first stop was to Kearney, Missouri, to a guy by the name of Chris Wilkerson. He was a Chevy specialist and has quite a fine collection himself. But he had never done a Mopar and took it as a challenge to do it. Because of the B9 stamped on the radiator support bracket, Chris thought it was originally painted Dark Blue Poly, which was at variance with the trim tag, clearly showing the Y2 code for Yellow. When the car was restored there was no evidence that the car was ever anything other than Y2 Yellow. (On the day of our photo shoot, fellow Drifters’ member Mark Fletcher explained to John the B9 on the radiator support had nothing to do with the paint code.) For the longest time John figured that the car might’ve been some sort of special order, but such was not the case. Since Chris worked for Ford Motor Company in Claycomo, Missouri, he worked on John’s Dart in his spare time along with his other projects. The car was finished a year later, in 1994.
The car is part of Galen Govier’s A-Body Registry. Govier verified that it is 1 of 34 1969 Dodge Dart GTS 383 convertibles with a four-speed transmission. John’s 383 was rebuilt at the time of the restoration, bored 0.060 over and is now equipped with an Edelbrock intake and Holley carburetor. The dual-point distributor was changed out for electronic ignition. John notes that the 906 heads have been reworked with hardened valves. Headers are TTI and the exhaust is 26-inch with turbo-flex mufflers. Transmission is stock 833 four-speed with a Hurst shifter. The Dart’s rear end is a stock 8.75-inch Sure-Grip with a 3.23:1 final drive ratio. Stopping power comes from the optional front disc brakes with drums on the rear end. The car now wears 14-inch Rallye Wheels that came from a 1970 A-Body. The interior is stock and was restored at the same time as the exterior, post-flood.
The car holds many great memories for the Talleys over the past 46 years, with the car now approaching its 50th birthday. “I taught my wife how to drive it as she didn’t have a car of her own, and she continued to drive it to school a couple years after I graduated.”
Since being restored, John and Charlotte have put roughly 18,000 miles on the car. They’ve attended many cruises and shows since we belong to a few car clubs, my first in Springfield, Missouri, called Route 66 Mopar Club. I’ve been with the club many years and still belong. “But I decided to complete a much desired item on my bucket list,” says John. “That was to drive my car from the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, where our home was located until this year, to Murrieta, California, to our daughter’s home, which is also our home now. So, two years ago, I set out to drive the 1,648 miles from Missouri to California. It was great driving down some of old Route 66 that remains. The car’s only hiccup was some bad gas in Winslow, Arizona. After a couple of bottles of STP gas treatment and a fill up in Flagstaff, Arizona, the Dart ran great.”
The car now has its home in Murrieta, California, in his daughter’s garage. He has now joined two additional car clubs in Southern California, the Drifters Car Club in Murrieta and the San Diego Mopar Club. The Talleys have found out that Southern California is the place to be with car shows all-year long. “We won’t forget our ties to our Route 66 Club in Missouri as they are our car family and some truly great people. But, we have met some great car people here too and consider them our family also. Car club families are some of the most caring people and the best of the best. We are excited about this new chapter in our lives to begin making more shows and cruises.”
John notes that their Dart has more sentimental value than anything, and we can never replace it. At about the time this story comes out, the couple will have been married for 42 years. And this Dart has been a part of their life the entire time together, the little Dart has been an integral part of the journey. They dated when John bought the car, it was with them as they got married, raised three children, and is part of their new life in Southern California. For more than four decades, this car has truly been a member of their family. Not many Mopar enthusiasts can make that claim and is what makes this car so special.
But what binds the couple together with the car is what Charlotte did for John to celebrate his 50th birthday. “I had been asking for a model of my car for many years and thought for sure I was getting one when Christmas came around,” says John. “But instead I received a hardtop similar to my car. Charlotte said she looked everywhere and made many calls, but they just didn’t have a convertible like my car. I was pleased with it and never thought another thing about it. However, I had no idea she had actually bought two of the hardtops, one to give me and the other to send to a place on the east coast called, Bosch’s Garage. She had located a guy by the name of David Best, and he had agreed for her to ship him the car along with pictures of my car including the engine, trunk, inside interior and outside of the entire car. She monitored the progress of the car via emails and right before my 50th birthday in August he shipped her the car. She had a big party at the house, and the last gift being the replica of the Dart, right down to the stripes on the factory-correct matching Y2 Yellow color. He had even created a magazine laid in the front passenger seat that had my name on it; naturally, it was Mopar Muscle. It even has my exact license plates. It was the best birthday and the best present I’ve ever received, and I’ll never forget it.”
