Artist and designer Es Devlin awarded Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT
New Post has been published on https://sunalei.org/news/artist-and-designer-es-devlin-awarded-eugene-mcdermott-award-in-the-arts-at-mit/
Artist and designer Es Devlin awarded Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT
Artist and designer Es Devlin is the recipient of the 2025 Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT. The $100,000 prize, to be awarded at a gala in her honor, also includes an artist residency at MIT in spring 2025, during which Es Devlin will present her work in a lecture open to the public on May 1, 2025.
Devlin’s work explores biodiversity, linguistic diversity, and collective AI-generated poetry, all areas that also are being explored within the MIT community. She is known for public art and installations at major museums such as the Tate Modern, kinetic stage designs for the Metropolitan Opera, the Super Bowl, and the Olympics, as well as monumental stage sculptures for large-scale stadium concerts.
“I am always most energized by works I have not yet made, so I am immensely grateful to have this trust and investment in ideas I’ve yet to conceive,” says Devlin. “I’m honored to receive an award that has been granted to so many of my heroes, and look forward to collaborating closely with the brilliant minds at MIT.”

2025 McDermott Announcement Video: Arts at MIT
“We look forward to presenting Es Devlin with MIT’s highest award in the arts. Her work will be an inspiration for our students studying the visual arts, theater, media, and design. Her interest in AI and the arts dovetails with a major initiative at MIT to address the societal impact of GenAI [generative artificial intelligence],” says MIT vice provost and Ford International Professor of History Philip S. Khoury. “With a new performing arts center opening this winter and a campus-wide arts festival taking place this spring, there could not be a better moment to expose MIT’s creative community to Es Devlin’s extraordinary artistic practice.”
The Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT recognizes innovative artists working in any field or cross-disciplinary activity. The $100,000 prize represents an investment in the recipient’s future creative work, rather than a prize for a particular project or lifetime of achievement. The official announcement was made at the Council for the Arts at MIT’s 51st annual meeting on Oct. 24. Since it was established in 1974, the award has been bestowed upon 38 individuals who work in performing, visual, and media arts, as well as authors, art historians, and patrons of the arts. Past recipients include Santiago Calatrava, Gustavo Dudamel, Olafur Eliasson, Robert Lepage, Audra McDonald, Suzan-Lori Parks, Bill Viola, and Pamela Z, among others.
A distinctive feature of the award is a short residency at MIT, which includes a public presentation of the artist’s work, substantial interaction with students and faculty, and a gala that convenes national and international leaders in the arts. The goal of the residency is to provide the recipient with unparalleled access to the creative energy and cutting-edge research at the Institute and to develop mutually enlightening relationships in the MIT community.
The Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT was established in 1974 by Margaret McDermott (1912-2018) in honor of her husband, Eugene McDermott (1899-1973), a co-founder of Texas Instruments and longtime friend and benefactor of MIT. The award is presented by the Council for the Arts at MIT.
The award is bestowed upon individuals whose artistic trajectory and body of work have achieved the highest distinction in their field and indicate they will remain leaders for years to come. The McDermott Award reflects MIT’s commitment to risk-taking, problem-solving, and connecting creative minds across disciplines.
Es Devlin, born in London in 1971, views an audience as a temporary society and often invites public participation in communal choral works. Her canvas ranges from public sculptures and installations at Tate Modern, V&A, Serpentine, Imperial War Museum, and Lincoln Center, to kinetic stage designs at the Royal Opera House, the National Theatre, and the Metropolitan Opera, as well as Olympic ceremonies, Super Bowl halftime shows, and monumental illuminated stage sculptures for large-scale stadium concerts.
Devlin is the subject of a major monographic book, “An Atlas of Es Devlin,” described by Thames and Hudson as their most intricate and sculptural publication to date, and a retrospective exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York. In 2020, she became the first female architect of the U.K. Pavilion at a World Expo, conceiving a building which used AI to co-author poetry with visitors on its 20-meter diameter facade. Her practice was the subject of the 2015 Netflix documentary series “Abstract: The Art of Design.” She is a fellow of the Royal Academy of Music, University of the Arts London, and a Royal Designer for Industry at the Royal Society of Arts. She has been awarded the London Design Medal, three Olivier Awards, a Tony Award, an Ivor Novello Award, doctorates from the Universities of Bristol and Kent, and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire award.

Sports Illustrated 1973: The Triple Threat of Secretariat and Owner Penny Chenery Tweedy
In 1973, the world of sports witnessed an extraordinary feat—one that transcended the racetrack and captured the imagination of millions. At the heart of this story was Secretariat, the chestnut thoroughbred whose dominance on the track made him a legend, and his owner, Penny Chenery Tweedy, whose vision and determination helped make history. Sports Illustrated recognized this monumental achievement, dedicating a memorable cover story to the Triple Crown-winning horse and his trailblazing owner. This coverage immortalized their journey in the annals of sports history.
Secretariat: The Horse of a Lifetime
Secretariat’s story is one of unparalleled athleticism and sheer will. Born on March 30, 1970, at Meadow Stable in Virginia, Secretariat quickly showed signs of greatness. Trained by Lucien Laurin and ridden by jockey Ron Turcotte, he was known for his powerful build, speed, and striking chestnut coat. But it was his performance during the 1973 Triple Crown that solidified his status as one of the greatest racehorses of all time.
The Triple Crown, consisting of the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont Stakes, had not been won since Citation’s victory in 1948. The pressure was immense, but Secretariat proved more than capable. He won the Kentucky Derby in a record time of 1:59 2/5, a mark that still stands today. He then took the Preakness Stakes with another record-breaking run. But it was in the Belmont Stakes that Secretariat’s legend was truly forged.
On June 9, 1973, Secretariat delivered what many consider the greatest performance in the history of horse racing. He won the Belmont Stakes by an astounding 31 lengths, shattering the record for the fastest 1.5 miles ever run on dirt—2:24 flat. The image of Secretariat pulling away from the field, his powerful stride unmatched, remains one of the most iconic moments in sports history.
Penny Chenery Tweedy: The Woman Behind the Legend
While Secretariat was the star on the track, his success would not have been possible without the determination and leadership of his owner, Penny Chenery Tweedy. In an era when the world of horse racing was dominated by men, Chenery stood out as a pioneer. Taking over the management of her father’s Meadow Stable after his health declined, Chenery faced skepticism and resistance, but she was undeterred.
Chenery’s faith in Secretariat was unwavering. She made bold decisions, from choosing the right trainer and jockey to negotiating syndication deals that would ensure the horse’s legacy long after his racing days were over. Her belief in Secretariat’s potential and her willingness to challenge the status quo made her a trailblazer in the sport.
Sports Illustrated’s coverage of Secretariat’s Triple Crown victory in 1973 was not just a celebration of the horse’s achievements, but also of Chenery’s remarkable leadership. The magazine highlighted the unique bond between Chenery and Secretariat, as well as her role in navigating the challenges that came with managing a champion racehorse.
The Legacy: A Moment Frozen in Time
The 1973 Sports Illustrated cover featuring Secretariat and Penny Chenery Tweedy is more than just a piece of sports memorabilia; it is a snapshot of a historic moment in American sports. The image of Secretariat, powerful and regal, with Chenery by his side, represents the pinnacle of success in horse racing. It is a testament to the extraordinary talent of one horse and the unshakable resolve of one woman.
Secretariat’s legacy has endured for decades. His records still stand, and his name remains synonymous with greatness. Penny Chenery Tweedy continued to be a prominent figure in horse racing, advocating for the sport and the well-being of its athletes. She passed away in 2017, but her impact on the sport remains profound.
The story of Secretariat and Penny Chenery Tweedy is one of triumph against the odds, a tale of a legendary horse and the woman who believed in him. Sports Illustrated’s 1973 coverage captured this story for the world to see, ensuring that the legacy of Secretariat and Chenery would be remembered for generations to come.

From Orchestral Grandeur to Techno-Thrills: Exploring "Cybersymphony" by Leyla Romanova Leyla Romanova’s debut in the world of music for film scores is an unbelievable breakthrough. By “Cybersymphony” she pays homage to the extraordinary achievement of Christopher Nolan, though the resulting sound shape is entirely new and just as impressive and novel as his. Did you know that "Cybersymphony", which is 7 minutes long, is just like a journey through the beat and melody of trance music? Romanova's hybrid of the orchestral classical and modern electronic music gives her music an atmospheric texture, which is at once and entirely fresh. It is obvious that Romanova had been, and still was, spectacular at her job just by looking at her. This song both figuratively and literally pulls you in and takes you on a journey that requires no images to portray a vivid movie. The harder the beat gets, the more distorted the synths and you dance without any resistance. [caption id="attachment_55167" align="alignnone" width="1334"] It is obvious that Romanova had been, and still was, spectacular at her job just by looking at her.[/caption] What differentiates this performance from others is its non-verbal story-telling narration. Romanova's line is interwoven with what we call narrative level, the scenes of monumental battles, entreating musings, and mankind's deepest values. A skill of a composer to convey many feelings without using a single word is a real evidence. Romanova uncovered why she likes Christopher Nolan's pictures and decided to music for the track was consistent with this narration approach. It can be argued that Cybersymphony is a perfect fit for Nolan's masterpiece of cinema since it illustrates the drama, tension, and ingenuity of creative mastering. After each release anticipate Romanova's growth and new feats in the movie realm. In the end of the "Cybersymphony" she becomes very famous and she can only become part of a group of great movie score composers soon. Listen to CYBERSYMPHONY below https://open.spotify.com/album/4ZQUY1aGHiJQHYKkIGsPI9 Follow Leyla Romanova on Facebook Youtube Instagram

Record-Breaking Champions Shine at Monumental Marathon
Tumblr media
  Monumental Races Rewrite History
New Course Records Set in Marathon and 5K In an extraordinary display of athleticism and determination, the 16th annual CNO Financial Indianapolis Monumental Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K took over downtown Indianapolis this morning, attracting a massive crowd of nearly 15,000 participants. The event left its mark on history with not one, but three new course records, while 19 remarkable athletes achieved the unofficial Olympic Team Trials - Marathon standard.
New Marathon Champions Triumph
In the heart-pounding Men's Marathon, Lyle O'Brien from Boulder, Colorado, emerged as the victor, crossing the finish line in a stunning 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 41 seconds. Notably, O'Brien's performance bested the previous course record set in 2021 by almost a minute. On the women's side, Rachel Hannah, hailing from Post Elgin, Ontario, showcased her extraordinary prowess. She broke the women's course record, finishing with a time of 2 hours, 35 minutes, and 17 seconds, an achievement that left the 2019 record of 2 hours, 35 minutes, and 36 seconds in the dust.
Monumental 5K Smashes Records
The Monumental 5K witnessed a smashing new record in the women's division. Mackenzie Callahan, a Boulder, Colorado native, clinched the 2023 title in 16 minutes and 3 seconds. Her performance outshone the previous record of 16 minutes and 18 seconds, which had remained untouched for seven years.
Monumental Champions and Their Victories
- Men's Champion: Lyle O'Brien of Boulder, Colorado, seized the top position with a new course record, completing the race in 2:15:41. Mason Jones of Titusville, Florida, followed closely in second place at 2:15:59, and Brian Masterson from Seattle secured third place, with a time of 2:16:04. - Women's Champion: Rachel Hannah of Post Elgin, Ontario, made history with her new course record time of 2:35:17. Elizabeth Bigelow from Twin Falls, Idaho, finished second at 2:35:33, while Lucy Dobbs of Indianapolis claimed third place, clocking in at 2:36:39.
Half Marathon Excellence
- Men's Champion: Thomas George of Lafayette, Colorado, led the pack, clinching the top spot in the Half Marathon with a winning time of 1:03:18. Brandon Garnica of Provo, Utah, and Charles Sweeney of Boulder, Colorado, closely followed with times of 1:03:24 and 1:03:33, respectively. - Women's Champion: Katie Izzo of San Diego, California, stole the show in the Women's Half Marathon, breaking the tape in 1:10:45. Jeralyn Poe from Flagstaff, Arizona, came in second, just two seconds behind, at 1:10:47, while Marybeth Chelanga from Colorado Springs, Colorado, took third place with a time of 1:10:59.
Speed Records in 5K
- Men's Champion: Asher Propst of Noblesville, Indiana, secured the title with a swift 14:47 finish. - Women's Champion: Mackenzie Callahan of Boulder, Colorado, further solidified her reign by setting a new course record of 16:05.

station eleven pt. 4
Discussion Points:
    - “The mention of Arthur aside, he realized this was an extraordinary development. If there were newspapers now, what else might be possible? In the old days he’d taken quite a few red-eye flights between New York and Los Angeles, and there was a moment in the flight when the rising sunlight spread from easy to west over the landscape, dawn reflected in rivers and lakes thirty thousand feet below his window, and although of course he know it was all a matter of time zones, that it was always night and always morning somewhere on earth, in those moments he’d harbored a secret pleasure in the though that the world was waking up. He hoped for more newspapers in the years that followed, but none came.” (Von Mandel 264)
- This is when a frequent trader in Year 19 brings Clark the New Petosky newspaper that contains Francois’ interview with Kirsten Raymonde. In this interview, Kirsten references the night she saw Arthur die as a child. This is a monumental piece of information for Clark, since everyone he knew in the old world is gone and this is his one tie to it now. I love this section in particular because this section introduces Clark’s life after the flu and details his years of acceptance in solitude before he meets the Symphony. This section wonderfully shows the moment in which Clark felt more normal again and allowed to have hope for the first time because of it, even if it was unrealistic. For a character like Clark, this is wonderful to see.
     - “The Symphony was performing on a bridge a few blocks from the library, the caravans parked off to the side. Francois heard the first notes, the cacophony of musicians practicing their sections and tuning up. August was playing the same two measures over and over, frowning. Charlie was studying the score. Earlier, a few townspeople had carried benches down the hill from the town hall, arranged now in rows facing the bay. Most of the benches were occupied, the adults talking among themselves or watching the musicians, the children spellbound by the instruments...At some undetectable cue, the musicians stopped practicing and tuning and talking among themselves, took their places with their backs to the water, and fell silent. A hush came over the assembled crown. The conductor stepped forward in the stillness, smiled at the audience and bowed, turned without a word to face the musicians and the bay. A seagull glided overhead. The conductor raised her baton.” (Von Mandel)
- This is my favorite selection from the Symphony’s time at the airport because it’s a beautifully descriptive moment of serenity in a post-flu world of solitude and pain. Though the Symphony is spreading joy everywhere they travel, this moment feels particularly wonderful because it comes in a moment of rejoice, where friends are made and found again and the world feels a little more safe. These moments are scarce in this world, so this moment feels healing for everyone involved. Additionally, the imagery of this scene is very real, like every Orchestra concert I’ve ever been in. For a moment, you’re able to forget the circumstances with how real this moment is.
Discussion Questions:
1. Airplanes are the unifying thread between everyone who found themselves living in the airport, especially Clark and Elizabeth. In the way that planes transport things and people to a new place, everyone’s sudden abandonment at the airport was symbolic of the arrival of the post-flu world. Airplanes also exist as beacons of hope in this chapter for new beginnings, though this is not usually met with a good outcome. For the passenger aboard the quarantined plane or the pilot who went on a scouting run, there plea for newness is met with disaster; however, the passengers aboard the plane heading to LA are of an indeterminate outcome.
2. Jeevan’s story was the most surprising to me, but likely only because we know and hear so little about it. Jeevan, who was always looking for a purpose, found his purpose in starting a family and helping others by furthering his medical skills. Jeevan adapts well to this new world because he was determined to survive and found reasons to keep going, not so different from Clark. In section 7, we learn that Clark has lived well into his elderly years in the airport, having never left. Though Clark has friends in his community at the airport, he finds that his motivation for living is creating the museum of the past to memorialize it.
3. The Museum of Civilization is so important to everyone because it provides a healthy opportunity to look upon the past and remember it. For those who remember the past, it’s an opportunity to reminisce on their favorite things. For those who don’t remember/didn’t live during the old world, it’s an opportunity to learn about and experience things that were unlike anything they know now and provide perspective into history. I don’t think I would include anything different in a Museum of Civilization now; the most important things to include are electronics, tools, and everyday inventions.
4. In a way, the decision to search for the missing members of the group is wise, though it is not very practical. As the Symphony is very close and is like a family, it makes sense that they would find it necessary to not leave one behind. I think this choice is wise because there is survival in numbers and it also communicates the bond of the group and that the norm is that no one gets left behind. However, it might not be the smartest decision to venture into territory where the prophet’s men might be lurking in search of the lost members. I would have done what the Symphony did and looked for my group, there is little I wouldn’t do to save someone. I think money is the most sacrificial thing for someone’s safety, though I would have a hard time sacrificing education.

The Velvet Underground’s 30 greatest songs – ranked!
Tumblr media
30. Ride Into the Sun (1969)The Velvets recorded two versions of Ride Into the Sun: a fabulous 1969 instrumental laden with fuzz guitar and a hushed 1970 vocal take backed by organ. Somewhere between the two lies one of their great lost songs; Lou Reed’s disappointingly flat 1972 solo version doesn’t do it justice at all.
29. Run Run Run (1967)For all the shock engendered by the lyrics of Heroin and I’m Waiting for My Man, the most malevolent-sounding track on the debut album might be Run Run Run, a powerful R&B groove lent a gripping darkness by Reed’s noisy guitar playing and the screw-you-I-take-drugs sneer of his vocals.
28. Beginning to See the Light (1969)The title suggests awakening, the melody is bright, but the lyrics are dark and bitter. They may have been directed at John Cale, who played on an initial version of the song, which was subsequently re-recorded after Reed sacked him, against the wishes of his bandmates. A ferocious 1969 live version amps up the tension.
27. Foggy Notion (1969)Reed was a lifelong doo-wop fan. His passion usually found its expression when the Velvet Underground recorded backing vocals for their ballads – as on Candy Says – but the tough, rocking Foggy Notion went a stage further, gleefully stealing a chunk of the Solitaires’ 1955 single Later for You Baby.
26. The Gift (1968)In which the band set a two-chord grind that may, or may not, have been based on their instrumental Booker T in one channel and a blackly comic Reed short story read by Cale in the other. “If you’re a mad fiend like we are, you’ll listen to them both together,” offered the producer, Tom Wilson.
25. Guess I’m Falling in Love (1967)Recorded at the White Light/White Heat sessions, but never completed, the April 1967 live recording of Guess I’m Falling in Love – taped at the Gymnasium in New York – will more than suffice. It boasts three chords, a distinct rhythm and blues influence, Reed in streetwise, so-what punk mode and explosive guitar solos somehow potentiated by the rough sound quality.
24. Temptation Inside Your Heart (1968)“It was not Mein Kampf – my struggle,” the guitarist Sterling Morrison once reflected of the Velvet Underground’s career. “It was fun.” A delightful late Cale-era outtake that inadvertently captured Morrison, Cale and Reed’s giggly backchat as they recorded the backing vocals, Temptation Inside Your Heart bears that assessment out.
Tumblr media
23. New Age (1970)New Age comes in two varieties. Take your pick from the world-weary, small-hours rumination found on 1969: The Velvet Underground Live, or the more epic studio version that the Velvets biographer Victor Bockris suggested was “an attempt to present some encouraging statements to a confused audience as the 70s began”. Both are superb.
22. After Hours (1969)The Velvets’ eponymous 1969 album ends, improbably, with the drummer, Moe Tucker, singing a song that could have dated from the pre-rock era. The twist is that her childlike voice and the cute melody conceals an almost unbearably sad song, ostensibly a celebration of small-hours boozing, but filled with longing and regret.
21. I Can’t Stand It (1969)Amid the Velvets’ songs about drugs and drag queens lurked the plaintive sound of Reed pining for his college sweetheart, Shelley Albin, the subject of Pale Blue Eyes, I Found a Reason and I Can’t Stand It. The latter’s cocky strut is disrupted by a desperate lyrical plea: “If Shelley would just come back, it’d be all right.”
20. The Black Angel’s Death Song (1967)There is something folky and vaguely Dylan-esque at the heart of The Black Angel’s Death Song, but by the time Cale had finished with it – alternately strafing it with screeching, insistent viola and hissing into the microphone in lieu of a chorus – it sounded, and still sounds, unique.
19. I Found a Reason (1970)It is one of the ironies of the Velvet Underground that the most forward-thinking, groundbreaking band of their era could occasionally sound like old-fashioned rock’n’roll revivalists. Buried on side two of Loaded was one of the loveliest of Lou Reed’s loving homages to doo-wop, complete with spoken-word section.
18. Some Kinda Love (1969)Musically straightforward, sensual in tone, Some Kinda Love is a complex business, part seduction soundtrack, part refusal to be hemmed in by standard categories of sexuality – “no kinds of love are better than others … the possibilities are endless / and for me to miss one / would seem to be groundless”. Killer line: “Between thought and expression lies a lifetime.”
17. European Son (1967)European Son isn’t a song so much as an eruption. It sounds like a band overturning the established order of rock’n’roll, almost literally: after two brief verses, it bursts into thrilling frantic chaos with a verbatim crash, like the contents of an upended table hitting the floor.
16. Rock & Roll (1970)It is hard to see Loaded’s driving, joyous hymn to music’s redemptive power – “her life was saved by rock and roll” – as anything other than disguised autobiography on the part of Reed. The suggestion that music will endure “despite all the amputations”, meanwhile, seems to look forward to his departure from the Velvet Underground.
15. Candy Says (1969)No one else in 1969 was writing songs remotely like Candy Says, a stunning, tender pen portrait of the transgender Warhol superstar Candy Darling set to a gentle doo-wop inspired backing. Its melancholy seems to presage the note Darling wrote on her deathbed in 1974: “I had no desire for life left … I am just so bored by everything.”
Tumblr media
14. Sunday Morning (1967)Sunday Morning was written at the behest of Wilson. He wanted a single that might conceivably get on the radio; he got a haunting, melancholy sigh of a song, its battered wistfulness and undercurrent of paranoia – “watch out, the world’s behind you” – the perfect encapsulation of morning-after regret.
13. What Goes On (1969)Morrison maintained that the studio incarnation of What Goes On wasn’t a patch on the live versions the band performed with Cale on organ. Maybe, but the studio incarnation featuring Cale’s replacement, Doug Yule, is great. It prickles with nervous energy, Reed’s guitar playing is amazing, its churning coda takes up half the song and it still feels too short.
12. Femme Fatale (1967)Apparently provoked by the damaged, doomed Warhol superstar Edie Sedgwick – with whom Cale had a brief affair – Femme Fatale is as beautiful and fragile as its inspiration. The story of a wary, ruined former suitor warning others off the titular anti-heroine is lent a chilly edge by Nico’s delivery.
11. I Heard Her Call My Name (1968)In the Velvets’ early days, Reed purported to be “the fastest guitarist alive”. A berserk claim, but his Ornette Coleman-inspired solos on I Heard Her Call My Name are some of the most extraordinary and viscerally exciting in rock history, frequently atonal, spiked with ear-splitting feedback and pregnant pauses.
10. Ocean (1969)The Velvet Underground recorded Ocean several times – one version is supposed to feature the return of Cale on organ – but never released it in their lifetime, which seems extraordinary. It is among the greatest of their later songs, its atmosphere beautiful, the epic ebb and flow of its sound completely immersive.
9. I’m Waiting for the Man (1967)An unvarnished lyrical depiction of scoring drugs tied to music on which Reed’s rock’n’roll smarts and Cale’s background in minimalist classical music – the pounding, one-chord piano part – meld in a kind of relentless perfection. Amusingly, there is now a pharmacy at the song’s fabled location of Lexington 125.
8. I’ll Be Your Mirror (1967)A song about Reed’s affair with Nico that could just as easily be about Andy Warhol’s approach to art, I’ll Be Your Mirror is one of those Velvet Underground tracks that makes their initial commercial failure seem baffling. How could a pop song as wonderful as this fail to attract attention? Nico and Morrison on stage at the New York Society for Clinical Psychiatry annual dinner in 1966.
7. White Light/White Heat (1968)A delirious paean to amphetamine, its subject reflected in the lyrics – “I surely do love to watch that stuff tip itself in” – and the turbulent, distorted rush of its sound. The band appear to be barely in control as it careers along; the chaotic finale, where Cale finally loses his grip on the bass line, is just fantastic.
6. Heroin (1967)Heroin was the deal-breaker at early Velvets gigs, provoking a “howl of bewilderment and outrage”. The shock of its subject matter has dulled with time, but its surges from folky lament to sonic riot still sound breathtaking. Oddly sweet moment: Reed’s chuckle as Tucker loses her place amid the maelstrom and suddenly stops playing.
Tumblr media
5. Pale Blue Eyes (1969)“High energy does not necessarily mean fast,” Reed once argued. “High energy has to do with heart.” Hushed, limpidly beautiful and almost unbearably sad, Pale Blue Eyes’ depiction of a strained, adulterous relationship proves his point. In its own vulnerable way, it is as powerful as anything the Velvet Underground recorded.
4. Sweet Jane (1970)Sweet Jane started life as a ballad – see the versions recorded live at the Matrix in San Francisco in 1969 – but, sped and toughened up, it became as succinct and perfect a rock’n’roll song as has ever been written, based around one of the greatest riffs of all time.
3. Venus in Furs (1967)For a band who inspired so much other music, the Velvet Underground’s catalogue is remarkably rich with songs that still sound like nothing else; they were as inimitable as they were influential. Venus in Furs is a case in point: umpteen artists were galvanised by its dark, austere atmosphere; none succeeded in replicating it.
2. Sister Ray (1968)A monumental journey into hitherto-uncharted musical territory, where a primitive garage-rock riff meets Hubert Selby-inspired lyrics and improvisation that sounds like a psychological drama playing out between Reed and Cale, all at skull-splitting volume. Fifty-three years later, it is without peer for white-knuckle intensity.
1. All Tomorrow’s Parties (1967)Ninety per cent of the Velvet Underground’s oeuvre consists of no-further-questions classics. The astonishingly high standard of almost everything they did makes picking their “best” song a matter of personal preference, rather than qualitative judgment. So let’s go for Warhol’s favourite, on which the sour and sweet aspects of their debut album entwine faultlessly. The melody is exquisite; the music monolithic and unrelenting, powered by Cale’s hammering piano and Tucker’s stately drums; Nico’s performance perfectly inhabits the lyrics, which turn a depiction of a woman choosing what dress to wear into a meditation on emptiness and regret. It is original and utterly masterly: the Velvet Underground in a nutshell.
