completely unrelated to any fic but i feel very compelled to share this as i have been experimenting with it and thinking about it all day very seriously. please bear with me. i need to share this i think it's hilarious. and i really hope no one else already knew it because i sure didn't and i never would've even spared a thought about it if not for a very accidental thing a While back. this is going to be long, i apologise. if i could add a functional read more below, i would.

so! frozen chests! we all know frozen chests, presumably. i mean there aren't heaps of them but i assume that generally everyone has stumbled across at least one, at some point. and i also assume everyone has either had a pyro character on the team that they swapped to, or had to grab one so they could melt that chest out of its ice, right? .... because you need pyro to melt the ice, right?... well, no, apparently not.

there are different kinds of ice encountered in exploration i just want to clarify that before anyone misunderstands what i am saying. what i am saying will apply to ordinary frozen chests and the icicles that drop on your head in dragonspine. it will NOT work on frozen boars, the special snow piles in dragonspine, or the special ice in dragonspine. i am talking about frozen chests in a hunk of ordinary ice that can be found both inside and outisde of dragonspine's map. also, it has to be noted that icicles will be affected by a few extra things than what works on frozen chests - that's what i observed, anyway.

according to my tests (and they're hardly Super thorough when it comes to actual frozen chests, because there are only a limited number you can stumble across on a "100%" map. it's a minor miracle i was able to test even to this extent, frankly) all we need to melt/shatter the ice is a combination of two things: suitable element and sufficient force. i'm not sure if it's considered poise damage or impulse type in the nitty gritty details, but when i say "sufficient force" i believe it's connected to one or both of those. i'm not exactly well versed on the details to that extent, so uh... take that with a grain of salt, but i'm pretty sure it's on the right track. the concept of a "weighty" attack.

the elements in terms of what works best to least best is, roughly, as follows: pyro > hydro/electro > geo/anemo > dendro/cryo (physical is also entirely ineffective. certain characters' skills may be unusually effective for their element in rare cases, but most are pretty equal.)

i tested out all the characters in my roster (traveler aside, sorry traveler, i was getting tired without changing your elements to test your skills also) on icicles to compare them, found the above pattern in element effectiveness, and then tested my theory whenever i stumbled across a frozen chest. things such as bow characters' charged attacks will work on dragonspine icicles - if they're hydro or electro they'll deplete them by around 50% as long as you're not too far away. but a charged bow shot does nothing to a frozen chest. that's how i figured out a certain amount of "weight" is required for it to work. i suspect that quite a lot of characters are still able to do this, though.

the characters and skills i know to be effective include childe's stance change and riptide (burst/slash riptides should both be effective), kazuha's infused plunge (even if it's only infused with cryo), xingqiu's skill, raiden's skill. i think zhongli's pillar shockwave also works, but that was the one i saw least clearly at the time.

... this all started because of one time a while ago when i saw a frozen chest, went to grab it, and a whopperflower assaulted me. a riptide later and the ice was gone. i was extremely confused. it was only today that i found a few well hidden frozen chests i'd missed that i could test on after much experimenting on the icicles.

the only reason i can think about is that the ice of frozen chests is, for whatever reason, programmed to work under elemental reactions and not set conditions. as in, unlike the special ice in dragonspine.

basically what this means is that abyss mage shields and frozen chest ice are script-wise the same thing LMAO

For what it's worth, these are the Visions that I would give my CMCs. In case that helps explain my thought processes on how Visions are bestowed/gifted/granted.

Beatriz would have a Dendro Catalyst. She traveled halfway across the world to study in an effort to find a cure for her insomnia. She wants to learn more about chemistry and medicine so that she can help others. Naturally she's going to have her head in the books, so tomes make sense for her weapon.

Jiwon would have a Pyro Polearm! He's very passionate about his work, and he's just like an eager puppy when out in public. He's constantly striving to improve his acting and singing, and I think that burning passion lends itself well to Pyro. Polearm because it's elegant and he's a rich boy. Also he's tall and muscular lol

Sae-eun would have an Anemo Sword! Right now she feels trapped by her father's expectations, but Yoosung helps her find the bit of freedom she needs to express herself. And once she feels comfortable... she is a whirlwind. She isn't studying what she wants to quite yet, but a little push will definitely bring her closer to that freedom she seeks. She gets a Sword because you can't be Saejoong's kid without having a little bit of main character energy. Lol

Rose would have an Electro Bow. Rose is unwaveringly loyal, perhaps to a fault. They are always working hard to try to prove themselves, to be helpful, to be useful. I think "I'd follow you to the ends of the earth, just to see you smile" is a form of eternity in and of itself. They change and grow, but that's just part of life! They get a bow because Rose is not the main character type; they're happy to be a support, working from the sidelines.

Ariella would have a Hydro Polearm! Hydro is the element of justice, and that's the logical choice for Miss "autistic sense of justice so severe it sometimes causes her physical pain." Also she's a lawyer haha. She gets a polearm, but specifically the trident polearm with a longer middle prong, because upside-down (i.e. when she plunges) it looks like the scales of justice! Also a trident makes sense because she loves the ocean ~ Never leave her alone with the twins in an aquarium. They will never leave.

Cho Hee would have a Cryo Polearm! Beneath her glitter, sequins, and chiffon, she's quite lonely. She's never felt supported and had to suppress her existence for a long time in her stifling household. While she does her best to make others smile and to live freely now, those wounds and her trauma still linger, making it difficult for her to truly trust others. She's also VERY strong and has a black belt in taekwondo, so she gets a polearm.

Hinata would have an Anemo Bow! Hinata's dream of becoming an idol helped her escape a life she didn't want, a life chosen by her overbearing parents. She's had her ups and downs, but even at her lowest points, she never abandoned that dream. She wants to live life on her own terms, and nobody will chain her down. I think a Bow makes sense, because the cupid-esque look would bolster her angelic image 🤭 also there's a joke to be made about a Rika MC with good enough eyesight to use a bow

Aoi would have a Cryo Catalyst. Aoi is someone who is admired by many, but known by few. Being a model has earned them many fans, but nobody knows the "true" Aoi. They're very skilled at putting on masks, and he adjusts his aura and image to whatever each photoshoot requires. She is far lonelier than she lets on. "Aoi" isn't even their real name; it's a stage name. He gets a Catalyst but specifically one of those floating jewel types, because she knows what it feels like to be a "treasure" that is only adored for its luster and not for substance.

RIP to Geo and Claymores. My characters are too silly and scrawny.

I almost gave Cho Hee a claymore, but is that flashy enough? I'm still debating. Strong women make me go brrrrr

Initial thoughts on the Natlan characters now that I've had the day to simmer on them

Disclaimer: I am white. I figured I should make that clear. I just want to get my thoughts out there.

In general, I think the more modern look is very unique and something we haven't seen in Genshin Impact before, but they do feel kind of safe. They're very vibrant too, which fits all the color we've seen from the Natlan previews. Unlike a lot of the Fontaine designs initially there's few I actively dislike, but perhaps they'll grow on me, like many characters have. They just sorely need some melanin given the cultures Natlan takes inspiration from.

Ranking each character we've seen individually based on my initial impressions, from best to worst, under the cut (pictures included).

1. Xilonen

Out of everyone in the teaser she immediately caught my eye. The jaguar (or possibly other big cat) theming (as well as being a proper catgirl) and image of her lounging in a tree, bathing in sunlight gives off a sense of power. Kind of like a real big cat! But you guys probably know I tend to like the tall women a lot.

2. Mavuika

I think a lot of people, myself included, expected the Pyro Archon to be a Himeko expy and/or light-skinned. And well, she seems to be both of those. The leaks of the Pyro Archon in a conquistador outfit did have me worried given real world history, but I'm very relieved to see that isn't the case.

Seeing her in a bodysuit when I first opened YouTube did have me puzzled at first, but seeing the full outfit really brings it together. Hoyo does put a lot of research into things, so I'm interested to see any analyses on her design, too!

And the sunglasses are peak. From what I've seen it's a controversial design element, but I think it really adds to her character. She really seems like a friendly archon all around. I wonder how "war" plays into all of this.

She's also the first archon without dark or white hair--it's just straight up red. Which makes me hope she'll change up the common tropes archons tend to have (please i don't want the two archons plotline for the 4th nation in a row). is really I really liked the flame hair concepts from her leaked designs, so it's nice to see we still got that in some form here.

3. Kinich

Kinich has a pretty cohesive design, and the color palette is pretty pleasing to look at, too. But I can definitely see the Xiao comparisons. I hope his personality makes him stand out from him.

The most perplexing thing about him though is how his design focuses a lot around pixels--Ajaw is a pixel dragon. The Sumeru Dendro characters do have their computer/tech themes (Alhaitham and Nahida especially, the latter of which is Irminsul's avatar), but this seems a little...much. Even when considering Natlan characters have more modern designs.

Taking the "Teyvat is a simulation" theory (and similar) in mind, I feel like Ajaw is going to play into that. Or they're just a pixel dragon because Hoyo thought it would be cool.

4. Mualani

Her design makes me think she was originally designed with a darker skin tone, but late in the development process someone told the designer to make her skin lighter, so we got the tan she has today.

Honestly her and Kinich are pretty close, probably interchangeable. But the main thing that bothers me are the orange highlights on her hair. They're a little off-putting.

But overall, I think her design is cute! As a character I get the impression she's going to be chill. Like "girl next door" vibes.

5. Iansan

I really don't have much to say given we've seen her before, and I didn't have much to say back then either. I do hope they give her a good amount of focus given she is a Teyvat Travail character, and I think they will, given it's a pattern they haven't broken. But Hoyo does like breaking patterns... I'd rather be optimistic, though.

Iansan is, however, the first character on this list we don't know the element for. I remember thinking initially she would be Geo, but now we know of two Geo characters, surely they won't have three Geos in the Pyro Nation, right?

I think she's most likely to be Pyro, but I've seen people throw around Electro too since I heard she's named after a lightning spirit. It would make sense--she has a lot of purple in her design. But I'd like to throw out my wild guess that she's Dendro. Why? Well, her eyes are the Dendro green, and if she isn't, then it's impossible for every element to be represented by a Teyvat Travail character. And I highly doubt Pulcinella is going to be Dendro.

6. Ororon

yeah that sure is a genshin character. cool cape though.

He's probably important given he's with Capitano of all people. Maybe he's a Fatuus, but I don't see any Fatui symbol on him. It would be nice to have more playable Fatui.

One thing I'm noticing just now is that he has heterochromia. Hoyo doesn't give out heterochromia willy-nilly. Definitely a mysterious character for sure.

As for element I'm pretty sure he's Anemo with how prominent teal is in his design. If that's true, he'll be our first tall Anemo man! Only took four years...

I am curious about his name, though. It every other language his name is Olorun. I wonder if the misspelling in English is intentional, or if it was just a localization error.

7. Kachina

She's cute...but that's really all she has going for her. I will say, though, the big fluffy ears are unique.

8. Citlali

The only reason she's at this spot is because of what we've seen of her personality so far. I can't think of a particularly hot-tempered female character in Genshin, and I think she might fulfill that niche.

But her design... I think the main thing that bogs it down is the dull pink color used for her hair. With the light skin tone she has it's kind of clashing. It's nice to see another character get colored eyelashes, at least.

I...really don't know how to put my dislike of her design in words. I don't think she's the worst design in Genshin, but she's far down there.

9. Chasca

I'll be honest she just feels like Natlan Clorinde. She stands out from her as a distinct character, but they still give off the same vibe.

I like her design better than Citlali, I will give her that. She just feels kind of boring compared to everyone else.

There are a few small details that are neat--the shoulder mole, textured eyebrows, elf ears... But yeah. She'd really have to impress me to make me want to pull her.

So yeah, those are my thoughts. I think this will be fun to look back on later down the line, when Natlan's story is done and we've gotten to know these characters better.

I am excited to see where the story goes, but honestly I'm more excited for the exploration than anything else. It looks super fun, and I can't wait to finally get my hands on the Saurians.

jokes on you, I'd eat crystalflies all the fucking time, way more than Tofu, I'd go out of my way to eat those lil buggers. They were like hard candies! Loved them. good texture. y u m. Almond tofu was only cause Morax refused to let me live off Liyues crystalfly population. (Dad plz Im a bird, birds eat bugs its toooooootaalyy fine I swear)

And because I know ppl will ask: They didnt have much of a flavor. Crystalflies rly do work like their core stack in game- Once theyre dead they loose most elemental traces, so there wasnt alot to taste.

At best they had very subtle flavors of their original elements. and none of those are rly comparable to direct real world flavors to my memory. Cryo ones would do the cool mint thing, but very subtle and not actually tasting like mint, pyro ones were a bit warm (like actual temperature, not heat in flavor), geo, dendro, and anemo ones were earthy in slightly different ways (yes dendro was grassy. Subtle but distinct Grass flavor(tm)). And do I even need to say the hydro ones just. Tasted like water. If you could even notice it? They were overall sweet ofc, again like candy. But I cannot pinpoint any specific real world flavor.

I use hard caramels w/ a really good apple creme filling to fill them in irl tho. That was primarily because hard candies are apparently really hard to find in my area for some reason, but they make the brain go hella brr, absolute perfect texture tbh. I'd honestly say the sweetness of caramel is neutral enough to be a stand in for the Main Flavor(tm) of crystalflies, everything else previously mentioned were SUPER subtle flavors, things hard to notice unless you've eaten hundreds of them as I had in this tl.

I dunno why mortals didnt eat them honestly. Maybe they just never thought of it. I do think I convinced the traveler and Tartaglia to at least try them at some point. Not that I remember what they thought of it.

Tartaglia would just echo Morax's food lectures any time I was eating them.. Not because he didnt want me eating them but because Morax basically told him to do exactly that if I tried to "dodge proper meals with those damned crystal cores"

Well I’m obviously gonna go with Genshin elements lol. I’d say I resonate most with Anemo. Tbh I aspire to be like Kazuha bc I’d love to just go with the flow, he seems like he just lets stuff roll off his shoulders pretty easily and he seems more at peace for it. That and playing music on leaves obv lol 🍃 🍁

I want to say dendro because it's the element I'd love to have but when it comes to something that represents me... maybe pyro? there's a sort of passion and cheer, I think it's because I feel like I could befriend the Pyro Liyue girls aaahahahh (Hutao, Xiangling, Yanfei, Xinyan). If not pyro, then maybe Geo?

Tbh I think slimes have tentacle potential? Different slimes different abilities. Electro slimes will give slight zaps for additional stimulation; hydro are basic ones (for beginner monsterfuckers skjksk), cryo and pyro are the ones that are not recommended because you'll either get stuck in ice or get set on fire. Dendro,,, I think these have rose-like thorns? Need to be careful with those

with slimes, i think hydro and cryo would probably be my choice of poison. hydro seems most tame, i agree, simply just wet tentacles. (kind of like osial, if you'd like to go there too.) i have a feeling i have thing for temp play, so obviously i'm impartial to the cryo slimes. the idea of cryo and pyro slimes at once seems pretty appealing too... the most obvious contrast of elements. i don't even want to think about the pain the dendro ones could cause >.<

i think heeseung would have a geo vision!! rex lapis gave noelle her vision when he saw how hard she worked to become a knight and to ningguang because she used to live in poverty and worked her ass off. we all know heeseung's an extremely hard worker so i think he'd have a geo vision. as for weapon, i think he'd be a sword wielder !!

for jay definitely pyro :')) jay has a lot of passion (sometimes an explosive amount !!) and he would definitely be gifted a pyro vision. diluc got his vision as he climbed the ranks and put his all into what he did, and amber got her vision when she wanted to push forward and do more for the world, and i feel like jay is such a driven individual like them. for a weapon, i feel like he'd be a claymore wielder like diluc 🥵

jake :D ELECTRO !! now hear me out...... razor got his vision because he wanted to protect his pack, and i think jake is just someone who has so much love for the people around him and would die to protect the people closest to him ♡ i think he'd use a sword — something in-range and comfortable for him to use !

jungwon is def hydro vision to me. childe got his vision when he fell into the abyss and made it out, so the hydro archon rlly saw his ambition to make it through. if you watched iland, jungwon was so COMPOSED most of the time like he toughed it out so well, and being the youngest leader when your group has more older members is difficult but he's a tank :')) as for his weapon, i think he'd also be a catalyst user because thinking of jungwon just manipulate the hydro element is Very Cool to me #kokomismaid

riki is also pyro for sure !! he has so much passion for performance and puts his everything into what he does :')) he stepped up to leadership roles during iland despite his age and even though he burned out and nearly gave up, he pushed through and made it to the second round even though he was in ground a lot. during the second part he didn't make it in the top 7 for a while but kept working his hardest <33 as for weapon i think he'd be a polearm wielder !!

Dendro Albedo? Now that’s a concept. He actually really suits it because of his interest in life. His skill is literally a flower;;; but it’s sort of fitting it’s not a real flower, with him being artificial n all. A beautiful creation, perhaps even more magnificent than a real flower, but it could never hope to be real. Hm. Maybe Geo really is the perfect element for him.

That’s amazing !! I’ve recently from a friend of mine, if you were kinda nerdy, you would usually have a mythology or history fixation phase while you were growing up - I was sort of both but Egypt always has a special place in my heart. When I first saw him - oh my god I was so happy. I was like YES SOMETHING INSPIRED BY ANUBIS LETS GO !! And Cyno as well from all the leaks I’ve seen about specifically his personality is shaping up to be one of my favourites in the game. (Don��t even get me started on that kit leak, I would’ve preferred to see it in game but still I’m very excited to play him he looks so fun)

I’m so worried I won’t be able to get Scara if Cyno decides to be stubborn and take up all my pulls to get him. Apparently he really isn’t that far away and I’m a f2p so I am;;; in pain. But even if I don’t get him, these characters will all likely get a rerun because of how short the banners will be. Esp Cyno and Nilou - they’re definitely getting a rerun soon. I’m sad about Tighnari though, I don’t think they should’ve announced he’d be on the standard so quickly. And he’s such a good character too. Sigh. I’ll just have to pray that he’ll ruin my pity at some point or come home in a ten pull with the five star.
