This is all going to sound ridiculously dramatic, but I need to talk about my feelings about Veilguard somewhere and this is the only void I have to scream into. Spoilers ahead.

Disclaimer: I haven't played the game yet, and I'm not sure I will. That may be disqualifying in the eyes of some, and that's fine. I'm not here to shit on it endlessly. From what I've heard, it's a fun game, and it has its fans, and that's not a bad thing in my opinion.

I view Dragon Age games like an anthology. Though there may be similarities in gameplay between them, the setting and tone is often vastly different. That in mind, I don't think you have to love all Dragon Age games equally. Each one has their flaws, which are more or less glaring to you depending on your personal tastes. Usually, people find their favourite, and nothing will surpass it. For me, that was Inquisition.

So, I knew that Veilguard wasn't going to set my heart on fire. To me, all it needed to do was be a decent game set in the world I love. It could even be total shit--which, frankly, I expected after ten years of dev hell and high rates of turnover. Really, I only had One Fear for the game:

And it did that. Offscreen, via letters.

The destruction of Southern Thedas has also destroyed my love for the series, because I can't face going back to any of the previous games without the thought in my mind that this'll all be gone in a decade or so, so what's the point?

I thought I'd grieve and settle into a headcanon with time, but it's been well over a month and every time I think of Dragon Age, I think of the fact that everything feels pointless, now. I'm even struggling to write, my favourite past-time of the last five years. It's overwhelmed my love for the series to the point where I don't even know if I love it any more. (I said this would be ridiculously dramatic.)

To be clear, this isn't even Veilguard's fault, really. It's a (shockingly) minor detail in what is otherwise an apparently-fun game. I don't want Veilguard fans to feel bad the same way Inquisition haters make me feel. I'm not asking how you could love this thing, I'm asking how can I love this thing?

Maybe I need more time, maybe that's it for me. Maybe this screed will help a bit. Maybe they will retcon it.

In fact, they ought to. I don't know if this is optimistic or pessimistic, but I can't see a future for the series unless they at least partially retcon this decision. I no longer have any interest in anything Bioware creates. There is no point getting invested.

And I think that's part of why I don't want to play Veilguard. Wait ten years, and this could all be ash too.

random headcanon: Eight hears "rhetorical" as "Rat Oracle" and believes that rhetorical questions are the result a psychic rat possessing people and asking stupid questions to mess with people.

When she hears "that was rhetorical", she interprets it as "that was the omnipotent rat oracle that we have to live with momentarily taking control of my brain. just a normal thursday."

She doesn't bring it up after asking Marina about the Rat Oracle, and her "feigned" confusion indicated to Eight that you shouldn't acknowledge the Rat Oracle until you get mind controlled, so nobody knows that she spends her days thinking that the supreme power on the surface is a psychic rat.
