Very Belated Birthday Gift Fic: "Fighting Dragons with You (Time of my Life)"
This birthday gift for @searchingwardrobes is nearly a month late now, but I had promised it and really didn't want to scrap the thing. Even if it's just a bit of fluffy drabble, I still wanted to give Melanie something.
This little fic takes place sometime in the future of the happy beginning we might have seen post the s6 finale, if the show had stayed in Storybrooke. Part of the idea came from listening to Taylor Swift's "Long Live". I was driving along, and when the lyrics got to "I've had the time of my life, fighting dragons with you..." I could picture an older Emma and Killian still together and happy, looking back on all their adventures and happy they had weathered them together.
The other thing that prompted this was just that I picture you, Melanie, having such a solid, supportive marriage like I tried to envision for CS here. I haven't even met your husband (and sadly I have only met you in person once) but just from what I know, you two seem to have each other's backs so beautifully, and to be such caring and committed partners, like one would hope to find in marriage. So this was meant to be a bit of a birthday tribute to that too. (If that makes any sense!)
Okay, at any rate, here is this little one shot - I hope you enjoy it!! Happy very belated birthday @searchingwardrobes
**Also available on AO3, if that is your preference**
Summary: Several years down the line, Emma and Killian are still living their happy beginning together - reveling in every challenge as long as they can face it together.
by: @snowbellewells
As they came in the door of the house with the white picket fence by the harbor, Killian and Emma Jones were out of breath, disheveled and nearly stumbling with fatigue. Emma could tell easily just how exhausted her husband was, in fact, by the way Killian let the door swing closed behind them without even looking to see it latch carefully as he usually did, and by the way he toed off his boots and left them lying haphazardly in the entry without neatly standing them side by side before plodding straight toward the living room couch. She was right behind him though in the beeline to a comfortable seat, kicking her own shoes off as well and tossing her jacket at the hall tree without even blinking when she missed by a mile.
Emma had to chuckle tiredly as they both let out groans of relief when they collapsed onto the cushions of their well-loved sofa and sank into the cozily plush support, heads falling almost simultaneously to rest on the back next to one another. She let her eyes fall closed for a minute, knowing Killian was doing the same beside her without even looking. Once their breathing slowed to normal, she carefully tried to stretch her twingeing knee and flex her stiff ankle, hating to admit to herself the discomfort that she wouldn’t have felt even five or six years ago. From the corner of her eye as it flicked back open, Emma could see Killian wincing while he gingerly worked his shoulder, and smirked in spite of herself. At least she wasn’t alone in her aches and pains reminding her that she wasn’t 28 anymore.
Even though she was more than a bit winded herself, Emma couldn’t resist resting her head on his arm along the back of the sofa and sifting her hand through Killian’s dark hair, now impressively shot through with silvery-gray strands that somehow made him even more attractive, before she teasingly asked, “Feeling your age there, Babe?”
Killian snorted indignantly, as she had expected, before retorting smartly, “I believe I am doing quite alright for my age, Love. As you well know…” Somehow, despite both of their weary bodies, a twinkle came into his eye that made her flush immediately remembering just how true his words were.
Nevertheless, she hummed low in her throat, cutting her eyes to study him playfully, “If you say so, old man.”
Shaking his head, Killian wrapped both arms around her, pulling her to him abruptly enough to startle a surprised exclamation from her as he rubbed his scruffy cheeks against her neck and collarbones until she squirmed. “Why don’t we discuss this again when an actual, living and fire-breathing dragon has tossed you about?” he chided in a low rumble at her ear.
Emma couldn’t hold onto her jesting scrutiny of him any longer; she was simply too glad that he was alright and all in one piece, though out of breath and his clothes a little singed. She was tingling with adrenaline at their victory and the excitement of fighting together once again, but she would never take for granted both of them coming through a battle unscathed - not after how many time in their lives she has nearly lost him. Her hands came up to cup his face, as she raised it for their foreheads to rest against each other, affection flooding her countenance and replacing the playful mockery. “You’re right, of course,” she whispered sincerely against his lips. “Thank you for being there with me.”
As he was all-too-often able, Killian seemed to grasp what she was thinking - both the elation, and the rush of adrenaline that came from having missed the challenge of facing a foe to save their town, their family and friends, and the spark of danger that had always stoked their simmering chemistry when they faced it head-on and side by side. Winking at her in the sassily knowing way he had perfected long ago, Killian quipped, “Admit it, Lass, you’ve missed the thrill of chasing baddies and fighting for our lives, haven’t you?” His tongue did an obscene sort of run along his lower lip as he awaited her answer, and Emma felt the heat flush across her skin in response, even though she fought to deny his observation.
She reached out to smack his chest good naturedly, already realizing he knew her too well to believe her denial anyway. Still, she tried with a laugh and shake of her head, “Hardly,” she snorted, but then added sheepishly, “Well… maybe a little.”
“Aha!” he crowed, tapping the curve of his hook lightly to the tip of her nose as if to accentuate the point. “I knew it!”
“Stop,” she grumbled, not at all pleased to be so obvious in something that really wasn’t a great opinion to admit.
Killian, sensing her hesitation, sobered quickly and gathered her closer to his chest. “Ah, Love, don’t you worry,” he murmured low against the sensitive soft skin of her shoulder, his words a whispered secret for her alone. “You ought to know I won’t tell another soul. Besides,” here he pulled away just enough to waggle his brows ridiculously at her, making her stomach heat and tingle just as it had the very first time he’d done it - when they were still on opposite sides in another realm and she hadn’t known what to do with the reaction her body already had to him, with or without her conscious permission. “Dashing rapscallion, remember? I’m having the time of my life being back in action. Wouldn’t trade it for anything, dragons and all.”
Emma huffed disbelievingly, amused despite her protests at his words, knowing that as crazy and reckless as it sounded, he meant them completely. And she agreed with him in every fiber of her being - from the Queen of Hearts, to a gigantic snow monster, the Lord of the Dead himself, Peter Pan, and Rumplestiltskin - his having her back had made all the difference. Not just facing fairy tale villains, but in facing down health scares, sheriff re-elections, Henry heading off for college, and the truth of growing older, all of it was made into an adventure because he was with her on the journey.
Studying his face, the creases of crow’s feet accentuating his adoring smile, the curve of his irresistible lips, and the wide open blue of his eyes, Emma still had to pause a moment in wonder. How had a woman to whom no one had ever paid any attention, whom most had never even noticed - whom the one who had, hadn’t hesitated to leave behind - a lost little girl no one had ever wanted - found her way to a life and a union like this? Even after years together, she and Killian were more bonded than ever, even their differences and struggles made them more fiercely devoted as time somehow hurried on. She had found her way into the life she’d always wished for on those sad blue star candles each lonely birthday for years on end. Though she had fought him every step of the way, when she had finally let Killian in, he had more than kept his word; once he’d won her heart, she had ceased to be alone in the world.
“You know it’s true, Emma,” he pressed, the smile on his face clearly seeing and understanding her fond, amazed thoughts.
Smiling back, Emma could only reply hoarsely, “You know, you crazy pirate, as hard as it is for me, I believe you.”
Pressing his lips to her forehead, Killian chuckled - as pleased at her admission and all that they had built as she was. “Even in peace time, wherever we are, Swan, there is never a dull moment with you.”

Your book reviews on Goodreads are hysterical, and whenever I get an email from Goodreads that you've posted one, I have to click on it immediately. Raving or ranting, they make me laugh every time.
Ahaha, thank you! Listen, I read a lot of—how do I put this nicely? Nonsense. Fun nonsense. Entertaining nonsense. Read 'til the end if only to explain the plot to Justin and watch his face as he is forced to listen to me explain the plot nonsense. I enjoy the nonsense. I quite often find myself looking to read the most nonsensical nonsense I can possibly find.
Is all of it well-written? No. Does all of it always make sense? No. Do the characters sometimes read like caricatures rather than real people? You betcha!
And yet, it is so much fun. Like, I enjoy myself a lot with the nonsense and the predictable plots and the sports settings that simply do not make sense. No college athletic department is suspending its star hockey player ON SCHOLARSHIP, NO LESS based on the story of one (1) other student-athlete with no further proof or an investigation and then while he's suspended allow that same star hockey player to continue training with the figure skater whose partner was the one who accused him of the suspendable offense in the first place! IT JUST WOULDN'T HAPPEN. IT'S NOT POSSIBLE. FIGURE SKATING ISN'T AN NCAA SPORT. THE WHOLE THING WAS SO—
I digress.
The point is, as much as there is one, thanks for reading and appreciating my consistent breakdowns over the nonsense I willingly force upon myself with startling regularity.
(If anyone else wants to follow my slow, but sure descent into romance-reading madness. I'm here on Goodreads.)

@searchingwardrobes Oh goodness! I am sorry I have fallen so far behind on my reading and reviewing, but this was a lovely treat to read while I was home not feeling well. I really warmed my heart and brightened my day. I love the glimpses in the quiet moments CS must have shared along the way but we didn’t get to see in canon. This is an incredibly powerful - I’m just stunned and impressed by how much feeling you can put into a single short one shot!
I love that you mentioned the old song “Brandy” (by LookingGlass, one hit wonders, I believe) I tend to like the sad oldies, so I’ve always liked it, but Emma’s reasons why she doesn’t made me look at it in a whole different light. The fact that Killian understands what she has been through, that he was alone and needed a place to belong for so long as well, it equips him so beautifully to comfort her fears in a way that she can trust and believe in. Their moment here is so heartfelt, so gorgeous, and he even turns the words of the song’s refrain into a promise that can soothe her soul: his life, his love, his lady is no longer the sea - but her. I loved how the honesty of this just clenched my heart too: “Killian shakes his head. “Emma, you said once that you and I understand one another. You, like me, were an orphan. What is the one thing all orphans want more than anything else?” She knows the answer to that is home, and they have become that long for home to each other.
This was so, so wonderful!! Thank you for sharing this with us! It’s a new favorite!!! 💞
I'm back!!! After months and months of creative exhaustion and writer's block, this story came to me one night when I couldn't sleep. It's just a little one shot of pillow talk in Camelot that's a little fluffy, a tiny bit angsty, and a whole lot of tenderness. I hope you all enjoy it!
Rated T
Killian wished for the first time for those garish artificial lights of Storybrooke. As Emma said, he was becoming a 21st century man, and he had come to enjoy the ability to see his beloved in all her glory, even after the sun went down. Here in Camelot, however, he had to rely on his sense of touch alone to map the marks on Emma he had come to know so well.
“You and I, we understand each other,” Emma had said once, and the longer they were together, the more they saw it to be true. Though many a woman had warmed his bed, he still felt self-conscious the first time Emma saw the scars that riddled his body, yet she had smiled in that knowing way she had, and had cheekily said, “let me show you mine.”
His thumb now grazed the puckered one on her shoulder, a form of punishment by a foster father using the tip of his cigar. He nudged her hair aside with his nose, then lightly brushed his lips across the faint white line behind her right ear, caused by a broken beer bottle.
“I thought I ducked in time,” Emma had chuckled when she told him the story, “until I felt the trickle of blood dripping down my neck.”
He knew what it was to make light of a person’s past, as if childhood slavery was just one of those things that happens sometimes. There was nothing normal about it, however, just as there was nothing normal about Emma living in an alleyway at the age of ten ducking from beer brawls.
Emma shifted in his arms with a contented sigh. He wished she could sleep, but since the darkness wouldn’t allow herself that reprieve, at least she could find solace in his embrace. “You silence the voices in my head,” she had told him, pressing her nose to his collarbone. If that was the case, he would not leave her side, though the sleeping arrangements hadn’t made her father very happy at first.
Killian’s fingers danced along the jagged scars along her upper back, the newest ones, from when a skip she was chasing pushed her into a plate glass window. That story elicited a shrug and bragging rights that she only missed a few days of work. Bravado – he understood that defense mechanism as well.
They really did understand one another.
Emma reached around for his arm and pulled his hand down to lace his fingers with hers. She pressed their joined hands to her chest, and he noticed the slightest change in her bearing. An almost imperceptible stiffening, and did her pulse just kick up a notch? She shifted again, this time as if she were uncomfortable.
“Are you alright, love?”
Emma released his hand, and using her magic, she lit the candles in the room. Then she rolled over to face him, her hands fluttering, as if she didn’t know whether to touch him or not. She finally balled them up in the sheet that covered her, pulling it up to her chin.
“Do you know the song ‘Brandy’?”
Killian chuckled. “You know my only knowledge of this realm’s music is you and Henry. Right now your lad is educating me on something called punk? Apparently, it was a favorite of his father’s.”
Emma rolled her eyes. “Oh yeah, Neal loved that stuff. I prefer the classics.”
“Like those beetle people?”
“The Beatles, Killian, and yes. Also Motown, Elvis, Creedence Clearwater Revival. I don’t know why, I just always liked the old stuff.”
“And this song? ‘Brandy’? Is by one of these singing groups?”
“Uh, no, but it's kind of the same genre, I guess. I don’t know even know who sings it, actually. I thought maybe you’d heard it at Granny’s or something. It’s about this girl and a sailor, so . . . “
“Ah.” He nodded, encouraging her to go on. He was glad she’d lit the candles, though he still couldn’t see her well. Well enough, however, to see the furrow of her brow and the way her lips turned down. This was obviously about more than a song. “Most sailors I know prefer rum, though. Brandy is a little high brow for our modest tastes.”
Emma rolled her eyes, which was precisely what he’d been going for. “Brandy is a woman. She lives by the sea and serves drinks to sailors. In a tavern, I guess.”
“Aptly named.”
Emma adjusted her pillow beneath her head and rolled over. She continued the story gazing up at the ceiling instead of looking at him.
“The song tells the story about her and the man she falls in love with. He’s a sailor, and he loves her, but always leaves her.”
Killian is beginning to see where this is going. He shifts closer to her, propping his head up on his blunted arm so he can look down at her as she speaks. With his hand, he strokes her arm gently.
“The chorus,” Emma continues, “is what the man always says to her: Brandy, you’re a fine girl. What a good wife you would be, but my life, my love, my lady is the sea.”
There are many things Killian could say. The first thought that comes to his mind is that the man in the song is either an idiot or a complete cad who most likely has a girl in every port. He’s known the type. People probably assume he’s the type, but he was always careful that his one-night stands had the same expectations he did. He actively avoided women who would be a “good wife.” Not every sailor had good form, however. He could explain all of that to Emma; tell her that the song is unfortunately a common tale, but it’s never been his.
He knows, however, that none of those things are what Emma needs right now. So he waits, without moving, his hand still caressing her arm. Emma releases a puff of angry breath before speaking again.
“I’ve always hated that song.”
“Emma, love,” Killian says gently, shifting onto his back and reaching for her, “come here.”
She comes to him a bit shyly, and he smiles at her gently as he cups her face with his hand. In her gaze, he can see hesitation. Fear. He doesn’t know if it’s the darkness whispering doubts, or if it’s her same old insecurities, but this is one battle he knows how to help her fight.
“My life,” he says, kissing her cheek, “my love,” he kisses her nose, “my lady,” he kisses her forehead, then pulls back so he can gaze into her eyes, “is you, Emma.”
Her eyes well up with tears, and a hesitant smile teases the corners of her mouth. “The Jolly Roger was your home for so long. You had nothing holding you back. Nothing tying you down.”
Killian shakes his head. “Emma, you said once that you and I understand one another. You, like me, were an orphan. What is the one thing all orphans want more than anything else?”
“A home,” Emma breathes without hesitation.
Killian nods, then kisses her fiercely, pulling her to himself, his hand tangling in her hair, pouring into his kiss all his hopes and dreams for their future. When they part, breathless, Emma presses her forehead to his, her smile finally full and joyous.
“So I didn’t freak you out when I mentioned that white picket fence?”
Killian tucks her against him, wrapping his arms fully around her. As he kisses the top of her head, he thinks of the real estate ads he and Henry have been looking at, one house in particular that looks fit for a princess, with a view of the sea.
“Not at all, love. I want that too.”
Emma snuggles further into his embrace, her hand splayed on his chest, right over his heart.
“Good,” she says, with that edge of smugness he’s always found so endearing.
He tries to stay awake, for her sake, but the warm, flickering light of the candles, combined with the softness of her in his arms, lulls him more than the ocean waves. Just as sleep pulls him under, he murmurs against her hair.
“You’re my home now, Emma. My life, my love, my lady.”

The Role of Daddy Charming--A birthday gift for @jrob64
The Role of Daddy Charming
Rating: PG
Relationship: Daddy Charming and Captain Swan
Summary: 4x2 “deleted scene”. David Nolan had played many roles in his life, but by far the one he's found most important was that of “dad”. The fact that he hadn’t been able to be there for Emma throughout the first 28 years of her life was one of his greatest regrets, so when he noticed the infamous Captain Hook’s interest in his daughter–and even more concerning, her returning that interest–he was determined to intervene. That is, of course, until she was trapped behind an ice wall, and David saw just how deeply and sincerely Killian Jones truly loved her.

It's finally done! I'm sorry your birthday gift is 11 days late @jrob64, but I hope you've at least enjoyed the little snippets I posted on discord as I wrote this! Happy belated birthday!
And without further ado....
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Throughout his life, David Nolan had played many roles. He’d been a son, a brother, a shepherd, a prince, a vet tech, a sheriff’s deputy, but by far, the roles he took most seriously were his roles as husband and father.
If there’s one thing he’d known all his life, it was that he wanted to be a better father than he’d had. He wanted to be present in his children’s lives. He’d vowed never to abandon them.
And so it was the greatest regret of his life that he’d done just that mere minutes after his daughter was born.
Granted, he was forced into the action; it was necessary to protect Emma and give her her best chance. Still, the shame and heartbreak of that decision had haunted him for the past twenty-nine years.
Surprisingly, during the first curse he’d felt it still, even if he hadn’t known what it was. More often than he cared to recall, he’d had vague dreams of the black knights, of the wardrobe, of being ripped from someone vitally important to him. The gloom and near despair of those dreams hung over him like a thundercloud. He’d woken feeling–knowing–that he wasn’t enough, that he’d failed at the most important task of his life.
Once he’d regained his memories and once he realized Emma was back in his life, he’d vowed to make up for lost time, to be the father she’d always needed, to protect her at all costs.
And so it was, when he sat at his kitchen table silently sipping his coffee and staring sightlessly out the window on the morning after the incident at the ice wall, he felt relief…but also helplessness. He’d almost lost her. Again.
Snow came up behind him, wrapped an arm around his shoulder and kissed his cheek before taking a seat next to him.
“That’s quite the bleak look on your face,” she whispered. Elsa was, after all, presumably still asleep behind the curtain they’d draped in front of the sofa to give her a bit of privacy. “Yesterday really shook you up, didn’t it?”
He blew out a long breath. “She came this close to freezing to death on my watch, Snow.”
She took his hand and squeezed it. “But she didn’t. From all I’ve heard, you were magnificent. Took charge and found a way to save her.”
He chuckled humorlessly. “I was terrified, but Killian…Killian was, if anything, even worse. Never seen a man so completely panicked.”
“He loves her,” she said simply, a radiant smile on her face. “I wouldn’t have believed it when we first met him in the Enchanted Forest, but he’s a good man, and he truly loves her.”
“Yeah, I’m starting to get that impression,” David agreed. “Did you know I gave him that ‘What are your intentions with my daughter?’ speech yesterday before…well…everything?”
“Really? What did he say?”
“First he gave me hell for being old-fashioned, and then he told me he wouldn’t risk his life for someone he considered loot. And if there was still any doubt in my mind before the ice wall incident, his reaction removed it. Whatever else I could say about him, I know he loves her.”
Snow sipped her coffee. “Maybe you should tell him that. Give him your blessing, if you will.”
David grimaced. He may be–grudgingly–willing to admit it to his wife in the privacy of their own kitchen, but admitting it to Hook’s face…well, he wasn’t sure. “Yeah, maybe when I see him again,” he hedged.
“Perfect,” Snow said. “You’ll probably have the opportunity any minute, whenever Emma and Hook get up.”
“What?!”
“He stayed the night with her,” Snow said with a grin. “You didn’t know?”
As if to confirm Snow’s statements, Emma and Killian emerged together from the loft. David felt his innate protective dad instincts flared to life. If Hook had taken advantage of Emma in her vulnerable post-nearly-freezing-to-death state…
“Remember what we just talked about. He loves her,” Snow murmured only loud enough for him to hear.
David let out a long breath. She was right. Reacting badly now would likely only make things worse. “Fine,” he murmured back.
“Morning!” Snow called sunnily to the couple entering the kitchen, as well as Elsa who had just emerged from behind her curtain. “Anyone want breakfast?”
“Thanks, but I’ve got to get to the station,” Emma said, “I’m sure the phones were blowing up last night with calls about the ice wall.”
“I also must decline,” Killian said, scratching behind his ear. “I should…get back to Granny’s.”
“See you later for lunch?” Emma asked, looking up at Hook with an open–and what David thought was rather nauseatingly besotted–look. At his answer in the affirmative, she headed out.
Snow nudged David, and he rolled his eyes. No time like the present, he supposed. “Let me give you a lift back to town, Hook,” he said, “I’m headed that direction anyway.”
Hook gave him a wary look, and for a moment, David hoped he was about to decline the offer.
No such luck.
“I’d appreciate it, mate.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The first minute of their drive was passed in silence. Killian side-eyed David uncomfortably, wondering when the questions–or probably more precisely, the accusations–would start.
His first inclination was to rile the man up further with sly grins and insinuations about what went on in the Charming’s loft the night before–after all his dashing rapscallion persona was a clock he’d worn as a shield for more years than he could count–but he quickly dismissed it.
This was Swan’s father. If he truly wished to have a relationship with her–and he did; he wished for a relationship lasting roughly in the neighborhood of forever–it wouldn’t do to antagonize her father. There was also the fact that he genuinely liked the man, and so…
“You know nothing…untoward…happened last night,” Killian said.
David glanced at him before turning back to the road with a grimace. “Didn’t ask. Don’t want to know.”
“Nevertheless,” Killian continued, “Your daughter and I certainly have more respect for you and Snow than to…engage in certain activities…underneath your very nose, not to mention the fact that her lad slept not ten feet from us.”
“Like I said, I didn’t ask,” David repeated, although Killian noted the way the other man’s face relaxed slightly at the reassurance.
“She was still cold,” Killian continued, somehow feeling the need to continue his justification. “She asked for me to hold her, and I couldn’t refuse. After coming so bloody close to losing her…”
David pulled into a parking spot in front of Granny’s but didn’t yet kill the engine. The look he gave Killian this time was sympathetic, understanding. “Almost losing the woman you love does things to a man.”
“Aye,” Killian agreed. “It was the same feeling of dread, of helplessness, as when the Crocodile crushed Milah’s heart in front of me. If it had happened again….”
David placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. “It didn’t,” he said firmly. “I’ve been trying to remind myself of that all day. It didn’t. You didn’t lose your love and I didn’t lose my daughter.”
There was a long silence, in which Killian wondered if he ought to simply exit the vehicle. He’d just reached for the door handle to do so when David spoke again, this time looking determinedly out the front window, rather than at him.
“There is….something I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Aye?”
“That conversation we started to have yesterday, right before everything went to hell…” he continued, “look, I think I was wrong to ever question your intentions.”
“There’s no need to–” Killian began.
“I think there is,” David replied, finally turning toward to him. “It’s been obvious for a while that you love Emma, and it’s not a love that’s going away anytime soon.”
“It’s not a love that’s going away ever,” Killian said firmly.
“Yeah, I’m inclined to believe that” David said. “Anyway, if there ever had been any question about your feelings and intentions, yesterday got rid of them. I saw how willing you were to do anything to save her. I supposed what I’m trying to say is…I apologize for ever doubting you.”
Killian’s eyes widened. Of all the things he’d expected the prince to say to him “I apologize” was rather far down on the list. “Apology accepted, although it is wholly unnecessary. As someone who does truly love her, I’m pleased she has a father who cares enough to be a touch over-protective.”
David gave a quick, decisive nod. “I won’t be old fashioned enough to give you my blessing,” he said, “but…I won’t oppose your relationship.”
“That means a great deal to me,” Killian said, “and I know it would mean a lot to Swan as well.”
“Yeah, well,” David said, “just so we’re clear, if you ever hurt her, I’ll run you through with my sword.”
Killian nodded. “Mate, if I ever hurt her, I’d let you do it with my own.”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Later that night, Emma was vegging on the couch when her dad finally made it home. After tossing his jacket onto the coat rack, he joined her, gave her a quick hug and kissed the top of her head. She was slowly but surely getting used to this casual affection from her parents, and it always gave her such a warm, fuzzy, loved feeling.
“Crazy day, huh?” he asked wryly.
Emma chuckled. “I guess that depends on what you’re comparing it to. For Storybrooke it was ho hum.”
It had certainly been a busy day. As she’d expected, they’d had more calls than she could count about the ice wall and the snow monster–or whatever it had been–that had crashed through the town yesterday. While she and her dad had both been working, they’d been so busy with calls and patrols, they’d barely had a chance to exchange a word all day.
“I guess you’re right about that,” David laughed. “Any day that doesn’t involve a new villain, monster or crisis is a win around here.”
They lapsed into silence for several moments before Emma spoke again, “Killian told me about your conversation this morning.”
David gave her a wary look. “Before you say anything, I do know you’re a grown woman who can make her own decisions.”
She grinned. “That’s what Killian said at lunch when I started ranting about you treating me like a teenager. Nothing happened last night, by the way.”
“I know. Killian told me.”
“Dad,” she said, and her heart turned over at the joy on his face at her use of the word. “I just….I just want to thank you for, you know, caring and doing whatever you had to to save me.”
“No thanks necessary,” he said. “You’re my daughter. I’m always, always going to do everything in my power to help you, no matter the situation.”
She felt the tears come to her eyes. “I think I’m finally starting to realize that. Sorry it’s taken so long. It’s just…I’m not used to having a dad, someone in my corner no matter what.”
Pain came into his eyes at that, and Emma realized how her words had come across. “I’m not blaming you,” she said quickly. “I know you did what you had to to give me my best chance.”
“Still,” David said, “I wish more than anything that I’d been able to be the father you needed and deserved from the beginning.”
“I wish that too,” she murmured, almost under her breath, “but the past is the past. You’re here now, and that means everything.”
“And I always will be,” David vowed with a decisive nod.
They lapsed into another silence, broken only by a few soft whimpers from baby Neal as Mary Margaret worked to put him down for the night–or at least as much of the night as he was willing to sleep at any one stretch.
“You know, I wasn’t the only one working frantically to save you last night,” David said slowly.
Emma felt her heart stutter and then soar as she thought of the man to whom her father was referring. “I know. Killian told me he’d been worried about me too.”
David blew out a long breath. “Worried is an understatement. He was absolutely frantic. Emma, that man loves you.”
Emma felt the butterflies, that swooping half-excited, half-terrified feeling one gets when she falls head over heels. She would have to be blind not to see that Killian had fallen in love with her, and she had the sneaking suspicion that somewhere along the way she’d fallen in love with him as well. Was she ready to admit it? She wasn’t sure. That level of vulnerability was scary as hell.
“Yeah, maybe so,” she hedged, trying to make her voice as even as possible, “and I…I…appreciate it.”
David gave her a long look. “Emma, I know it’s hard for you to trust. I know it’s hard for you to let yourself believe, and I will have your back one hundred percent whatever you do, but for what it’s worth, I’d give him a chance if I were you.”
“So does that mean you think he’s good enough for me?” Emma teased, uncomfortably aware of the momentous nature of the topic at hand and feeling the need to lighten the mood..
David chuckled. “You’re my daughter. No one’s good enough for you, but I suppose if you have to be with someone, he’ll do.”

Ohhhhhhh, I LOVE this one SOOOOO MUCH!!!
MC Fic Rec: Until We Meet Again
By @searchingwardrobes | Rating: M
As a joke, Liam Jones pays a gypsy to show 15 year old Killian his true love in her magic mirror. When Killian looks in the mirror, he falls through realms and time until coming face to face with a 15 year old Emma Swan. Because I'm obsessed with younger versions of Killian meeting younger versions of Emma. Complete This is one of my favorite CS fanfictions and one that is so nostalgic for me since I credit this fic with getting me into the world of CS fanfics and I don't see this fic getting recommended enough. There's just something about these lieutenant duckling fics that I'm an absolute sucker for! This fic is a mix of an enchanted forest au and a modern au, but since it mostly takes place in the land with no magic, I classify it as the latter.

Captain Swan Event
Hello, CS crew!! I come today with an event idea that has been tossed around in the discord server I run. (originally used for a different event >> CSMM) Okay, the new event (Captain Swan Co-Storytellers Collaboration) would consist of groups of 3-4 people working together to write a captain swan story. This is not a one person writes one part and passes on the document and so on until it reaches its end. No, this would be the ultimate team effort in an ensemble of amazing writers! Of course there are details to be ironed out but I wanted to know if anyone here was interested to join. I will share the form to get an idea of who is interested and for a way to contact anyone that wants to join in on the fun. As soon as I can I will reach out to you.
ENSEMBLE FORM
Gonna tag some people I know and I'm sorry if I don't tag everyone. If possible reblog. Thank you lovelies!

CSSNS23 IS A GO!!!!!
Alright y’all!!!! Get ready!!!! Sounds like there’s still PLENTY of interest in another year of the Captain Swan Supernatural Summer!!! I have to admit, I’m AMAZED AND SOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!
THANK Y’ALL SO MUCH!!!!!
So here are the deets...
Sign ups will be open from February 20- March 1.
Get To Know Me’s will start dropping in late April or early May.
Posting Dates will be in July, stretching into August if needed.
For those new shipmates not familiar with the Captain Swan Supernatural Summer, this is an event I created back in 2018 to address the woeful lack of Werewolf Killian fics. And we have succeeded many times over!!! The event is open to everyone. The only requirement is the fic or artwork has to be CS focused and supernatural in nature. In past years we’ve had werewolf, vampire, fae, selkie, soulmate, shapeshifter, witch, ghost, and many, many others!!
All of the past years fics can be found on ao3 here.
Any fic length is fine, from a 100 word Drabble to a 250,000 word epic MC. Any rating is fine. Any type of artwork is fine, from using traditional mediums of paint and drawing, to digital artwork to videos to gifs. Artists can elect to do their own original artwork and/or they can be paired with a fic writer to do artwork for the fic being written. And we certainly hope to have enough artists sign up that we can pair every author with an artist that wants to be paired. So please! SPREAD THE WORD!!!
Signups open a week from tomorrow, and this post will be reblogged daily on this blog as well as this years mods’ blogs in order for the most people to see the announcement!!
Any questions, you can leave an ask here, or get in touch with me or one of our other mods- @kmomof4 @winterbaby89 @jrob64 @ultraluckycatnd @stahlop - either on Tumblr or discord.
Come join us!!! It’s gonna be another great SUPERNATURAL SUMMER!!!!
Tagging all former participants to help spread the word!!! Under the cut unless Tumblr ate it.

Captain Swan Christmas Reruns presents: The Christmas Wish
Written by: @searchingwardrobes
Recommended by: @snowbellewells
Summary: Emma leaned forward, closed her eyes, and a wish bubbled up unbidden from the depths of her heart. "I wish I could just have a simple, domestic life. Is that even in the cards for me?" Breath left her on an exhale just as the wish floated through her mind, and the candle blew out. The "answer" to her wish had to be some kind of trick, however. After all, it wasn’t as if anything in the vision she received could ever in a million years be real. It was ridiculous. Captain Hook, the father of three driving a minivan? Impossible.
Rated G for Hallmark movie levels of fluff and Christmas feels
What we love: It’s like a Hallmark Christmas movie you can reread and enjoy whenever you want. I love how Melanie plays with the idea of a wish coming true - if Emma is willing to believe in it - and the various fairy tale characters playing their parts for the story to unfold. I like how it goes back to around the 3b time frame of the show, but then diverges and takes its own path from there. Plus, there are all the fun clever nods that readers will recognize, and a wonderfully cheery happy ending.

So glad to hear from you, babe!!! And glad you’re doing better!!!!
I'm Back . . .
If you missed my post about my problems with my hand, you can read it here. Basically, I was in a hand brace for a month, and I couldn't type or write by hand or do my hand embroidery. It was very sad for me without my favorite hobbies! Even scrolling online was painful and difficult. "Why don't you just dictate your writing?" People would ask. Yeah, no. I am nowhere near as eloquent in speech as in writing. It just doesn't work for me.
Anyways, long story short, the hand specialist said I had tendonitis in my thumb from overuse. By the time I was cleared from the hand brace, I left for a week's vacation with my kids. Now I'm back, brace free! However, I'm also doing physical therapy to ensure this doesn't happen again. I have some soreness today from the exercises she's having me do, but the pain is nowhere what it was before.
I also have to pace myself with anything that uses my hands. No more marathon writing sessions or embroidering for hours while everyone else watches a football game. Pooh. So, I will be updating my fics and (hopefully) posting some new stuff, but it will be slow. (Slower than before, you ask? Haha, unfortunately, yes.) I also will be back tomorrow posting my songs. Those don't take a lot of effort.
Tagging people who may care? lol

Summary: This fic was originally posted to my Fluffy Fridays collection sometime around season 6. At the time, it was a "future fic", but now it is more of a slight canon divergence. With the Black Fairy defeated and the final battle won, Storybrooke is enjoying it's happily ever after and trying to make new memories. Emma has some exciting news for Killian.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Independence Day
CS Genre: Future Fic
Spring slowly sizzled into summer—a particularly hot and humid summer in Storybrooke that had Emma grateful that they had indeed decided to stay in the Land Without Magic, a place where air conditioners were a thing.
Ever since the Black Fairy was defeated a few months ago, she and Killian had responded to far more “cat stuck in a tree” or “Leroy double parked in front of Granny’s” calls than “weird, fairy tale villain intent on world domination just destroyed something” calls.
In fact, they’d had no calls about fairy tale villains. It seemed Storybrooke had finally settled down into a peaceful, sleepy little town, with its requisite cast of eccentric characters.
It had never been the kind of life Emma had imagined she would lead—sheriff in a small town where everyone knows everyone else, married to her true love and so happy she thought she might die from it. But though it might not be the life she’d expected for herself, it was a life she loved with every fiber in her being.
Even when Regina decided to institute regular town meetings to discuss town business. (Seriously, they really were turning into Stars Hollow.) It was at one such meeting about a month ago, that the whole big production had been decided on.
“Now that we’re not, you know, fighting villains every other day,” Leroy had said when Regina called on him to speak, “I think we need to start participating in normal society things. The 4th of July is coming up. Let’s do it up right. Parade, fireworks, the whole shebang.”
Killian leaned over to Emma. “Perhaps I’m missing something love, but what exactly is the significance of the 4th day of July, and why would it call for an unusual amount of festivity?”
Emma smirked, so glad to get back to the business of enlightening Killian about the modern world rather than, you know, trying not to die or trying to keep him from dying. “It’s Independence Day in the United States, which is technically the country we live in. Lots of celebrating goes on that day.”
He’d, as usual, wanted to pepper her with about a million questions. Seriously, her husband wanted to know everything about everything. Usually, Emma dealt with it by telling him to go look it up on the “magic box”, aka Internet, but that wasn’t exactly practical during a town meeting. Seriously, Regina was as strict about “no talking!” in her meetings as the most demanding teacher.
“Shhh!,” Emma had said as various members of the town began brainstorming ideas for the best (and, honestly the first) 4th of July Storybrooke had ever celebrated. “You can look it up later.”
In the end they had decided to go with, as Leroy put it, the whole patriotic “shebang”. There would be a parade through the main street of town in the morning—complete with the Storybrooke high school band and various prominent citizens dressed in their Enchanted Forest finest. Emma wasn’t sure exactly what their Enchanted Forest attire had to do with the 4th of July, but she’d long since learned not to question these kind of decisions. It only led to confusion and headaches. Oh so many headaches.
(And to be honest, as the meeting was really ramping up, Emma realized kind of vaguely that she’d been having more headaches lately…along with way more nausea at weird times…and moments where she felt faint…and so much exhaustion she felt like she could barely get out of bed some mornings. Maybe she should make an appointment with Dr. Whale to see what was going on with her, but she thought she’d give it a few more weeks. After all, she’d been under a lot of stress since….well, basically since she moved to Storybrooke, and these weird symptoms were probably nothing more than her body sloughing off the stress and trying to get used to this strange new phenomenon known as “peace”.)
Anyway, the festivities would continue with a town picnic around noon and then fireworks as night fell.
And so it was that Henry and Killian spread out a blanket on the hill overlooking town on the evening of the 4th of July. Emma set her picnic basket on the blanket, and then sat down beside it, reaching for the ginger ale she always had at the ready lately. With a small, secret smile, she put a hand on her flat stomach, both excited and terrified about the news she’d received just the day before.
“And you’re sure we’re quite safe, here, love?” Killian asked as he sat beside her. “I must admit to being more than a little uneasy at the thought of the dwarfs setting off explosive devices for our amusement. It seems like a terrible idea.”
They’d talked about fireworks as soon as they’d returned from the town meeting back in June, and Henry had been amazed that Killian had never seen a fireworks display. “Are you serious?” Henry asked. “You’ve never seen fireworks? Fireworks have been around for like…ever. I know they were a thing in the Enchanted Forest. I saw them in my storybook—during Cinderella’s wedding!”
Killian shrugged. “Oh aye,” he’d said, “I’d heard of them, of course, but as a slave I’d not had much occasion to observe them. And then once I’d become a pirate…well, I was far more interested in causing the explosions than viewing them.”
“But fireworks are way better than just explosions!” Henry had assured. “They’re colorful and sparkly. Sometimes they have special designs. Some of them light up the sky, and others are like…little bursts of bright light and sound. And fireworks displays always have a grand finale and it’s just…I can’t explain it, but it’s awesome!”
“How precisely do they work?” Killian asked. “One lights a fuse and there is an explosion, aye, that I understand, but how do such explosions result in different formations and colors?”
“They just…do,” Henry said, with a little shrug. “I don’t know how it works. I just know it’s amazing.”
“I believe I shall consult Mr. Google, then, lad,” Killian said. “I find it far preferable to understand the mechanisms of my entertainment.”
Of course he did. Emma should have known. It had been two weeks after they’d moved in together before they could have their first family movie night because Killian insisted on researching what movies were, how they were made, how they were projected on screen, and how thin, circular discs inserted in a machine could cause said movies to appear on the “moving picture box”.
Her husband was a full-fledged nerd. A hot one, for sure, but a nerd nonetheless.
“Yes, Killian,” Emma said, coming back to the present and laying her head on her husband’s shoulder. “I’m sure everything is totally safe. Leroy’s got everything organized. Just relax and enjoy the show.”
“I shall attempt to do so,” Killian said, “but I fail to see how colorful lights can elicit as much excitement as you and the lad…ooooooh!”
Emma giggled as the first firework—a large one that changed color from red to white to blue, lit up the Storybrooke night sky. Killian looked up at the display in wonder, his eyes wide as saucers, a soft, boyish smile draping his face.
Sometimes she looked up at him and it just overwhelmed her all over again how much she loved him. Now was one of those times. She felt the tears come to her eyes, and Killian looked down at her in concern. As usual, he could sense her moods.
“Is all well, Swan?” he asked in concern, reaching up to catch the single tear that fell from her eye.
“It’s more than alright, Killian,” Emma said. “It’s perfect. All of this is perfect. I just love you so much, and I love our life together, and I don’t know what I ever did to deserve it, but life is just about perfect right now.”
He smiled tenderly, and leaned in to kiss her, but just before their lips connected, another firework went off, and Killian turned back to the light display. Emma smiled, laying her head once again on his shoulder as Henry wandered off to find Violet and watch the show with her.
The fireworks went on and on, and as they moved closer to the grand finale, Emma heard one of the dwarfs (she thought it was Happy’s job?) start the music. It had been decided that they would end the fireworks display with the 1812 overture, complete with the big finale coming during the cannon fire in the music.
Of course, as soon as it had been decided, Killian had gone to the library and pestered Belle for any information she could give him about the piece of music.
“The customs of this land are incomprehensible, love,” Killian had said that night as he helped her make dinner. “Why is it customary for this ‘1812 Overture’ to be played at celebrations of this country’s founding? The founding did not happen in 1812, but a generation before. What’s more, the piece was written to commemorate an event that has nothing to do with the United States. That Tchaikovsky fellow wrote the piece to commemorate the moment the Russians defeated Napoleon in his attempts to take over Russia. (Incidentally, is it only me, love, or does this Napoleon sound significantly like the Crocodile? Small in stature, lust for power, dreams of world domination…)”
“I really don’t know why the 1812 is so popular,” Emma said as she carefully pulled a casserole from the oven. “It just…is.”
“And it’s full of nationalistic anachronisms,” Killian had continued.
“What’s full of…what?” Henry asked, filching a roll from the bread dish and sitting at the table.
Emma rolled her eyes. “Your step-dad was about to explain about all the nationalistic anachronisms (whatever those are) in ‘The 1812 Overture’.”
“Quite so,” Killian said. “The piece features the French national anthem, La Marseillaise, for example, but in 1812, the song had been banned by Napoleon (the total ponce). Furthermore, the piece utilizes the Russian anthem ‘God Save the Tsar’ near the end, but it had not yet been written as of 1812. Not much of a historian, this Tchaikovsky.”
Henry groaned. “Mom, I think we need to ban him from the library. I already have to suffer through history lessons in school. Don’t need them when I get home, too.”
A particularly loud volley of fireworks brought Emma back to the present.
“So, are you enjoying your first 4th of July?” Emma asked.
“It’s been quite enjoyable, Swan,” Killian said, “but then any day I get to spend with you and the lad is.”
Emma’s nerves began dancing within her stomach (or was that just the nausea again). The moment was just about here. As soon as she’d learned the news from Whale, she’d decided she’d tell Killian just at the climax of the fireworks show. She wanted to make this moment special.
She just hoped he was as excited about the news as she was. They hadn’t talked much about it. This wasn’t something they’d planned; it had just sort of…happened. What if this wasn’t what he wanted?
“Anything the matter, Swan?” Killian asked just as the cannon began to boom in the music.
“No,” Emma said, taking a deep breath. “Something’s actually pretty great. At least I hope you think it is. I mean, I do, but we haven’t talked about it and…”
“Swan,” Killian said, looking more concerned than ever, “out with it, love.”
Emma took a deep breath, and then leaned in and whispered in his ear. “Killian, in about 7 ½ months you’re going to be a daddy again.”
His eyes got round again, as he sat up abruptly. “A father? I’m to be a father? You’re with child?”
She smiled tremulously. “Yeah, Whale thinks I’m about 6 weeks along. Are you…are you happy about it? I mean I know we haven’t really discussed it and this is a surprise and…”
He cut her off with a swift, passionate kiss, his hand moving to rest on her still flat belly. When he pulled back, there were tears in his eyes. “How can you even ask that, Swan? Of bloody course I’m happy. A baby! A product of our love! I do believe my life is now absolutely perfect!”
Emma leaned over and kissed him again, the tears streaming from her eyes as overhead the fireworks celebrated right along with the Savior and her Pirate.
