Parental!Edwin one-shot: A Growing Family
Summary: Ed and Winry’s son needs some comforting after seeing a nightmare. (Canon!verse)
A/N: So here’s the fic I promised writing! This was inspired by the wonderful fan art I’ve seen on this website, for example @persnickety-doodles‘s adorable comic (from which I took that one part, I hope you won’t mind!) and @colonelhotstuff‘s beautiful parental Edwin art, especially this. I HC that Alan and Emma’s age difference in reality is only 2 years but I’m changing it to 3 for the sake of this fic here :P Once again, please enjoy and review!
Words: 1000+
Warnings: implied *ahem* things happening before the beginning of this fic. (Nothing explicit)
Genre: f-l-u-f-f
“Damn kid. I’m too exhausted to have more than one round these days because I’m running after him 16 hours a day,” Ed cursed as he came down from his bliss, arms and legs tightly wrapped around Winry. She rolled her eyes and pushed his shoulder slightly.
“What a romantic thing to say right after making love to your wife. Usually people say stuff like ‘I love you’ and such afterwards. Besides, you’re not the one carrying a human inside you.”
“I don’t see what you are complaining about, you seemed to enjoy…”
“Ed!”
“Fiiine. Silly, of course I love you.” Ed hurried to add, knowing better than to annoy his 5-months pregnant wife. “And I love the little bean inside you. Your body is absolutely incredible for being create something like that!”
“Who knew babies could make you such a big sap?” Winry asked, secretly pleased by the compliment, and kissed Ed’s jaw. He gave her a fake annoyed look before she continued: “Anyway, my incredible body is saying that it needs sleep now. Could you please give me some space? Your leg is freezing cold.”
“Aww, Winry,” Ed pouted but moved farther from her. He pulled his boxers and T-shirt back on and laid down again, making sure his leg wasn’t touching hers. A few minutes later, just when he was about to fall asleep, he heard Winry whispering something.
“Shh, not right now, baby.”
She reached for Ed’s hand that was resting on her side and put it on her stomach. This wasn’t the first time Winry did this; usually it happened when the baby was wiggling uncomfortably, not allowing her mother to sleep. For some reason, it always calmed down when Ed’s hands touched the belly.
“Please, let mommy sleep, little wiggle monster,” Ed said with a sleepy voice, drawing circles on her skin lazily.
“She’s gonna be worse than Alan.” Winry yawned, snuggling closer to Ed and closing her eyes happily now that the baby stopped kicking.
“I hope he’ll sleep soundly tonight,” Ed murmured before falling asleep, his hand still on Winry’s stomach.
Ed probably shouldn’t have said that aloud, because only an hour later, an upset little boy jumped into his parents’ bed. His cheeks were wet from tears, and his hair was sticking to all directions due to his thrashing around in his bed.
“Alan? Is that you?” Ed asked, startled after being woken up so abruptly.
“Mmm.”
“What’s the matter baby?” Ed sat up and took a closer look at his son. “Didn’t we decide that you would try to learn to sleep in your own bed because there’s no space in this bed when the new baby arrives?” Truth to be told, Ed and Winry had tried to make their almost 3-year-old son sleep in his own bed for a long while, but more often than not, they still found him between them when they woke up in the morning.
“I-I had a bad dream,” the little boy confessed, still sobbing slightly.
“Oh. What was it about? Do you remember?” the worried father asked, rubbing Alan’s back. He knew all about awful nightmares, having basically lived in one for years, and there was no way he’d have the heart to tell his son to go back to his bed after that.
“Some big, bad guy took me away from you and mama.” Alan sobbed against Ed’s shirt.
“My squirt, I’m gonna make sure that will never happen in real life,” Ed promised and pulled his son into a hug.
“Will you stop caring about me when the baby is here?” Alan asked, genuine worry in his voice, his hands gripping Ed’s T-shirt tightly.
Oh, so that was what this was really about. This he could fix, Ed thought.
“Listen, the baby might need a lot of attention at first because it can’t do anything on its own, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love you just as much. You’re a big boy already and we know you can do a lot of things on your own, right?”
“Right.”
“You know… I had to grow up without my parents, with only uncle Al by my side. I would never let you go through the same. We are right here, and we are not going anywhere. We love you. Never forget that.”
“Thanks, daddy.” Alan sounded a lot happier already.
Ed grinned at him and tickled him slightly. “No problem, squirt.”
“Dad?” the boy asked after a moment of silence. “Is it gonna be a boy or a girl?”
“We don’t know for sure yet, but my guess is you’re getting a baby sister.”
“I’m gonna teach her to make foil automail!”
“I’m sure she’s gonna love it.” Ed said and ruffled Alan’s hair affectionately.
Suddenly they heard a sleepy voice from under the covers: “Why are you guys talking in the middle of the night?”
“Whoops. Guess we woke up mama,” Alan said, putting a hand on his mouth in embarrassment.
“Alan had a nightmare, so I allowed him to join us.”
“Aww, are you OK, honey?” Winry asked and pulled the boy closer to him.
“Yes, mama,” he said and nuzzled against her chest.
“That’s good to hear. You’re a brave boy. Ouch!” Winry flinched suddenly and put a hand on her baby bump.
“Is something wrong, Winry?” Ed asked, immediately alarmed by her reaction.
“No, I don’t think so. The little one just wanted to let us know she exists too.” She smiled.
“Feisty even before having born… That’s a real Elric,” Ed chuckled. “Alan, do you want to feel how much your sister is kicking?”
He took Alan’s hand and brought it to Winry’s stomach.
“There she is…”
“Dad, how did she get there?” the boy asked suddenly.
“Um, you see…” Ed’s face heated dangerously and he had no idea what to say. He had been afraid this question might pop out sooner rather than later, but he still wasn’t prepared to answer it.
“I think that’s a story for another time,” Winry smiled and kissed her son’s forehead lightly before telling him to go back to sleep.
