2017 things im grateful for:

getting into college and all the help from my teachers like mr. c :-) and hopefully getting some scholarships! and also surviving junior year it was a time

becoming better friends with a lot of people! like my lunch squad with melk man and chunk and tara but also my friend group thats been the Core of sarah and jennie and cassie and my friends who have been dispersed in the winds of college like astra and casp and eli. also foolia gets her own shout out

the music! like seeing pvris live and getting into brockhampton and sufjan stevens and making a lot of good music @ districts/regions and such

my leadership positions in band/choir for giving me a sense of purpose and helping both lose my mind and also give me a lot of calm and confidence

my trip to spain for being painfully lonely yet beautiful i wish i appreciated it more but hey! i read a whole book series there and realized that i have to be there for myself or at least know how to function cause loneliness doesnt go away easy

the poems i wrote this year! i only wrote like one actual poem in 2016 and im proud of the 8 or so i refined this year and i think i’ll submit them to adagio this year !!! also adagio itself i really love being in it despite only having done editing stuff so far

and lastly im grateful for the sense of change that 2018 brings i feel like that i finally have some control over my life! like getting new glasses which i did do this year too. theres a huge sense of scary and foreboding but positive change coming with college approaching :-0

5 Reasons I’m better than you because I’m Mexican and speak Spanish

La primera:  I can cry in Spanish and English

La segunda:  I can breathe in Spanish and English

La tercera:  I can eat in Spanish and English

La cuarta: I can dream in Spanish and English

La quinta: …… OK so by now you’ve noticed i’m just messing with you and i really am not better at all so ha don’t be so triggered by the title  :))

La Comida:

  Yes yes yes, Mexican food is without a doubt the most delicious food I have ever tried (says me in a totally not biased tone at all) . And if the first thing that popped into your head was taco bell and burritos…. Get out.  I’m talking about REAL Mexican food!!!

  The list goes on and on but  there will be a future post on food so let’s just focus on what everyone knows… TACOS. They are by far my favorite mexican dish, specially street tacos. Those tacos you get from sketchy stands in LA at 10:00 pm.. Those are made with real love right there. Ooooh get me some taquitos al pastor with green salsa, onion, cilantro, a sangria, then I’ll know our friendship is real.

La Musica:

  Okay let’s get some things straight here. Just like there’s different music genres in english, for some unknown reason people forget that these genres also exist in other countries/ languages  one of them being spanish. There is indeed hip hop in spanish, pop, rock, alternative. However the music  most of us grew up with are probably nortenas, mariachi and cumbias. When it comes to music, because we’re dealing with the spanish language here, we listen to many different types of music. But nothing beats your tio singing a Vicente Fernandez song to your tia while drunk, and the rest of your family laughing or crying in the background am I right?

Los Apodos:

  What mexican family doesn’t have at least one family member with a cute nickname? Every single soul in my family has a nickname! Let me introduce them to you;

Dad: pita

Mom: wiwi, wiwilicious, chacalito

Sister: foolia, dali, dalilita

Brother: queso, maquiboo, pecas, quesofoo

Me: barbie, barbecur, nalgis, perro, yito, barbara

Nephew: pillin, pollin

Niece: makuko, pukis, flaca, makukito, kuko

Niece #2: pelis, picos, lil doggy, peli rojitta, piquiquis

  These are basically our names at home and what family friends might call you. Everywhere I go I’m introduced as Barbie not Anabarbara so people seriously think that’s my real name. The funniest event has to be at a volunteering event. My name tag said Barbie and the entire day I was asked if that was my real name, you should’ve seen how disappointed they were when I told them the awful truth haha.

Spanglish:

  What’s funnier than looking at people’s faces while you and your spanish speaking friends use spanish and english at the same time. For example, if you forget a word in english no worries just say it in spanish and vise versa. I mean come on tell me you haven’t done this and teased your friends who have no idea what you’re saying.

Osea como que it’s pretty hard to believe que nunca lo has hecho ;)
