Food Styling, Flawed ones, Learning series from 2010 Image: Strawberries and Cream. What is the story you want to portray with the image you have in mind? Are we selling this product? Is it some special day? Is it a portfolio? What is your focus point? When you can answer these questions, all other issues fill fall into place. Keep in mind the story, it should be simple. The story you want to tell will help you build your hero food, determine the setting and atmosphere for the shot. The focal point should be identified by the viewer, that's the pop or the separation of the hero in the image. Remember to keep the image clean, simple, more elements distract. Less is best. Food Styling, Flawed ones, Learning series from 2010 Image: Roast Chicken Leg Flaw- The chicken is overcooked, dry( ideal to eat, but not ideal for a shoot, for styling you never really cook the meat at all, learnt it after seeing the outcome of this shoot) The marinade and roast colour is too dark. I didn't use artificial colour, being a chef firstly, I used natural ingredients, now I work with combining soy, sugar and torching it instead of cooking and sometimes even applying shoe polish for that glazed look. Styled food was never meant to eat. There are so many unwritten rules for food styling.. You never eat food meant for styling, it's clearly unsafe. Have a plan, Be prepared. I can’t emphasize this enough. You will need a lot of tissue absorbent papers from my prev experiences. The quality of the items you purchase for the shoot will directly impact the appearance of your final image output, so be extremely picky about choosing products for photography.
