Influencer Feature: Leah Kanda (@FoodiesKe)
Tumblr media
Leah Kanda is foodie blogger who is passionate about the Kenyan food scene. Keeping in line with this month鈥檚 Nairobi Restaurant Week theme, we had a chat with her about her blog www.foodies.co.ke & her experience as an Influencer. This is what she had to say:
Wildfire: What inspired you to start your blog?
Leah: Back in campus, my friends & I would complain about how all the articles and reviews of restaurants in Nairobi tended to lean more towards the high-end eateries which were out of our pockets reach at the time. No one was doing reviews of ordinary places with great and affordable food. Further still, there seemed to be very little documentation when it came to the street food culture in Nairobi and around Kenya in general. I figured, if there wasn鈥檛 anybody doing it, why shouldn鈥檛 I? 聽That鈥檚 how Foodies Kenya found its bearing. 聽
Wildfire: Describe your typical day as a blogger?
Leah: I do have a day job that takes up my entire 8-5pm; so I have to devote my after work hours and my entire weekends to creating, sorting and planning out the content I intend to share. It鈥檚 a bit of a struggle sometimes but I find the challenge of juggling in between two different worlds exciting; almost like having a secret affair.
Wildfire: Are you selective about the brands you work with?
Leah: Extremely so; I am a sucker for authenticity. As such, I tend to work with brands that somehow reflect the values I project. It鈥檚 not easy at all being choosy as a creative, but I feel that in the long run, it will pay off.
Wildfire: Has the opportunity to work with brands changed the way you blog and post?
Leah: In some instances, yes; because I have to ensure my content falls in line with what the client requires. I have to maintain this tricky balance between being authentic and making sure that the client鈥檚 message is passed & the client is happy. Most times you have to go outside your comfort zone and step up your game in order to achieve this.
Wildfire: What鈥檚 the dream brand you would love to work with?
Leah: I would say Magical Kenya because there鈥檚 no greater feeling of accomplishment that getting to sell the beauty of your country to the rest of the world.
Wildfire: When you work with brands, how do you ensure that you remain authentic?
Leah: Like I said earlier, by choosing to partner or work with those brands that reflect my values and interests; I avoid the trap of getting lost in between.
Wildfire: What mistakes have you seen bloggers making while partnering with brands?
Leah: I have observed many bloggers diluting their content just to suit a certain brand. I find this to be suicidal to one鈥檚 own brand because you water down and compromise your work鈥檚 quality for the sake of a brand that may not stick around after the contract is over. However difficult it may be, sometimes it鈥檚 best to say no to brands that force you to stray from content and quality which your audience is used to.
Wildfire: Do you think there is still a role for blogs or do you see everything moving to more visual channels like Instagram?
Leah: Yes, I do think there is still a huge role for blogs. In the same way that physical libraries still exist and thrive despite the onset and growth of digital platforms, there will always be an audience that prefers this medium to more visual and playful channels. 聽Besides, I tend to think rather than compete, these channels complement each other. 聽
Wildfire: What are your future plans for the blog?
Leah: For the longest time, I have dreamt of doing a tour to document the local cuisines of various communities across Kenya. This is a project that I am keen on undertaking this year. Other than that, I plan on collaborating with other creatives to bring diversity in terms of the content shared on the blog.
Wildfire: Do you have any tips for fellow content creators?
Leah: Consistency, consistency and some more consistency. When it comes to content creation, you have the lead position in shaping and nurturing the direction of your audience鈥檚 expectation. As such, you can鈥檛 afford to have the sort of hot one minute, cold the next kind of mentality. The best way to grow is to be consistent in the kind of content you create and share. 聽
Are you a brand that is interested in working with Leah or other foodie influencers? Wildfire has experience in developing powerful and engaging influencer-led campaigns. Get in touch with us at [email protected].

Casual Bite Cafe and Coffee shop - westlands. Such a lovely little spot. The coffee is great. It's a thin array but the Baritas / waiters know their coffee. Brenda was her name. She answered our questions with excellent mastery. She was against me taking a ristretto - (Retrained Espresso) haha. According to her, it is so strong it will melt your throat yet it is half the quantity of a normal shot of espresso. 馃槀 #coffee #espresso #nairobicafes #coffeeculture #westlandscafes #nairobicaffeine @foodieske (at Casual Bite Cafe & Coffee House)
