American to English translation for fic
So I read and write fanfic, as do lots of others, and I've noticed that when it comes to British shows or movies, Americanisms or American terms crop up often. It's mostly because most don't know we have specific terms for things in the UK, and I've seen references here and there before, but I've decided to write one of my own. Feel free to add to it tho! I'm gonna put it up on Ao3 too and any additions, I'll reference the tumblr and link them on Ao3 too.
AO3 link is here!!
Anyway, here we go I guess.
Some Americanisms to English-isms
Gas = fuel/petrol/diesel (we tend to specify the type of fuel the vehicle uses, diesel vehicle or petrol vehicle for example)
Gas station = petrol/fuel station
Gas court = petrol/fuel court, or sometimes forecourt (not often with this one tho)
License plate = registration plate/reg
Diner = cafe
Fast-food = takeaway (this is sort of interchangeable. McDonald's is called fast food, a meal from a pizza place that delivers is takeaway)
Motel = hotel
Side-note: We tend to use specific named hotel chains like Premier Inn (or Prem-Inn for short) or Holiday Inn or Travelodge. We also have Britannia Hotels and several others. If the fic is based in a specific place, local hotels or famous ones may be better options. For example, in Liverpool, we have The Shankly or Adelphi.
Cab = taxi or black hac for a specific type of taxi.
Side-note: These are what you see in BBC Sherlock, for example, and are a UK staple. They're less popular or common-place nowadays but there are dedicated taxi companies that use them. There's on in my town that operates until 4pm each day. They are also usually more expensive than a car taxi but they have oodles of space and you can have a pram/buggy kept upright rather than folded-down in them which is brilliant.
Cop = police officer
Side note: more informal, colloquial terms include "copper", "the fuzz", "tit-head" (because of the nipple hat okay, just look up the hat, it's hilarious), "bobby", "rozzer" (pronounced r-o-z-er not Row-zer), and "the bill" (there's an actual show called this btw. It can be a good reference for anyone writing crime fic in UK). There's more but those are the most common. Older terms do include "peelers" and "old bill".
Second side-note: the police have a whole host of terms, colloquial and slang that can be a great thing to include in fic, which I'll link a glossary of here. It's not all UK centric but cross-country policing is a thing so that may just be a boon imho. Also the short-hand acroynmns used are useful so here's a link to the Metropolitan Police glossary of those too!
Patrolman = constable or police constable
Antenna = aerial or TV aerial
Fall (season) = autumn
Bill = banknote or specifically "tenner", "fiver", "twenny" (not "twenty"). We don't have single banknotes like a dollar bill. We have pound coins
Dimes, nickels, etc = pound coin, two-pound coin, fifty-pence, penny, two-pence, five-pence, ten-pence, twenty-pence (link here about the coin currency)
Drug store = chemist or pharmacy
Optometrist = optician
Primary care physician = GP (general practitioner) here's a link about UK medical terms for doctors etc
Side-note: here's a link about medical terminologies etc between American and UK
Social security number = national insurance number
Liquor store = off-license or, specifically, Bargain Booze™
Liquor = spirits (usually)
Store = shop
Target, Walmart, etc = honestly, it's probably gonna be Tesco, ASDA, Morrisons, ALDI or Lidl
Superstore = supermarket
Shopping cart = shopping trolley or just "trolley"
Yard-sale = car-boot/car-bootie/car-boot sale
Attorney = barrister or solicitor (solicitors you go to for legal help, barristers tend to be involved in actual court matters, like a the Crown Prosecution Service), here's a link that explains it better
Janitor = caretaker
French-fries = chips (although McDonald's French-fries are just that, French-fries)
Intersection = crossroad
Highway/freeway = motorway
Interstate = usually an A-road or a motorway, we don't really have interstates here)
Overpass = flyover
Turnpike = toll motorway
Windshield = windscreen
Trunk of a car = boot or car boot
Hood of a car = bonnet or car bonnet
Truck = lorry
Sedan = saloon car
Blowout = puncture or flat tyre
Pavement = road
Sidewalk = path
Subway = underground (like the London Underground)
Drapes = curtains (though we do use "drapes" we tend to say "curtains" more)
Pacifier = dummy or "dodo" or "dodi"
Diaper = nappie or a pull-up (if its like underwear for toddlers)
Baby crib = baby cot (though we do use "crib", we tend to say "cot" more)
Baby carriage/pushchair/stroller = pram or buggy (more specific type tho, here's a link about the differences)
Trash/garbage can = bin, dustbin, rubbish bin
Garbage/trash collector = binman/binmen
Mail = post
Mailman = postman
Mailbox = postbox
The movies = cinema or pictures
Movie = film (less common nowadays with influence of Americanisms but I still use "film" and a lot of people my age and older do too (25+)
First floor = ground floor okay, it's the ground floor because it's on ground level
Sneakers = unless they're Converse, it's probably just "trainers"
Baggage = luggage
Purse (as in the bag) = handbag, or "purse" but that tends to be the thing you put your money and cards in then put in your handbag
Vacuum cleaner = hoover or a specific brand like Henry Hoover™, which you'll find we tend to just call Henry (though I have a John Lewis hoover I got from George, ASDA that I've named 'George' and yes, I do say "I need to use George in a bit to hoover" regularly)
Sweater = jumper or, if it buttons up it's a cardigan or cardi
Closet = wardrobe
Elevator = lift
Call collect = reverse charges
Schools = we have primary/infants (11yrs)and secondary/high school (11-16yo) with some high schools have sixth-form college (16-18yo) or actual independent colleges for the same ages
College = university
Semester = term
Vacation = holiday
Kindergarten = nursey/reception
Flashlight = torch
Wrench = spanner
Backyard = garden
Cookie = biscuits
Chips = crisps (like Walkers™ or Lays™ in the States)
Pants = trousers
Cottoncandy = candyfloss
Dude = bloke/fella/mate
John Doe = John Smith
Exhausted (tired) = knackered
Cell phone = mobile
Cell data = mobile data/4G/5G
Bathroom/restroom = loo/toilet (informal term "bog")
Thanks = cheers
Soccer = football
Y'all = "you lot"
Fuck off/hit the road/go away = bugger off
Some slang phrases too
Bits and bobs = stuff, usually random
Take the mick/mickey = making fun of someone or over-exaggerating
Bob's your uncle = there you go, basically
Bog standard = typical, run of the mill kind of deal
Gutted = feel upset, disappointed
Dull as dishwater = basically really, really fuckin boring
Chinwag = basically "shooting the breeze" or just having a talk/chat
.
If you have any others that you think of or want added, reblog and add em! Tags too if you'd prefer but reblogs would be easier ☺️

Chapter 18: Turn The Page
New York City || September 1988
So you walk into this restaurant All strung out from the road And you feel the eyes upon you As you're shakin' off the cold You pretend it doesn't bother you But you just want to explode
-- “Turn The Page,” Bob Seger (1971) [click here to listen]
Claire Fraser took a long drink from the glass of water beside the bathroom sink. Closed her eyes. Counted five deep breaths.
Bob Seger’s voice flowed through the tiny portable radio that she and Jamie took everywhere on the road.
Here I am, on the road again There I am, up on the stage There I go playin' the star again There I go, turn the page
She opened her eyes. Listened to the man sing so passionately, so desperately, about his exhaustion and heartbreak from living in the spotlight. Touring relentlessly. Feeling displaced in his own life.
“Claire?”
Jamie poked his head around the door, humming along with the song.
Not for the first time, Claire was grateful that the tour had wildly exceeded all expectations – the private plane instead of tour buses; limos to and from the gig; and hotel suites that were so large they typically had two bathrooms.
Not that they minded sharing, of course – but living on top of each other could be hard sometimes. On nights like these, she needed her own space.
And now, Jamie met her eyes in the mirror.
Enjoyed his surprise.
“What…you…”
She turned to face him. Took a moment to admire him in all black – the dress shirt that she had ironed for him this morning, black jeans, black belt with silver studs, boots. The leather jacket whose inside pocket she tucked a love note into every morning.
She raised her arms. “What do you think?”
The red dress wasn’t something she had intended to buy, that afternoon in Miami when the band needed a few hours with Colum to discuss the European leg of next year’s tour (“the leg owed to the fans, after the shit Jamie pulled last year before he got clean,” he had reminded them). She had kindly suggested to Charlotte and Molly – Angus’ groupie girlfriends – that rather than spend another afternoon inside, they explore the shopping mall attached to the hotel. Jamie had insisted that one of the roadies go with them, to deal with any photographers or aggressive fans – but Claire had only smiled and said that it would be fine.
She had been correct, of course. It was such a breath of fresh air to walk up and down the long corridors, eat Cuban sandwiches in the food court, browse the selections in the department stores and specialty boutiques. Anonymous. To interact with sales clerks not as the wife/girlfriend of the biggest rock musicians in the world – but simply as three women having a nice afternoon out together.
And, truth be told, it was good to get some time with Charlotte and Molly. They asked – respectfully – about her relationship with Jamie, and she in turn asked – respectfully – about their relationship with Angus. Watched them tear up when Charlotte started talking about the uncertainty before them when the tour ended, and when Molly wondered whether they would ever be enough.
Not quite knowing what to say, Claire absently pulled through a clearance rack – and then…
“Ohmygod Claire!” Molly exclaimed. “You have to try that one on!”
Startled, Claire focused on the sleeveless, ankle-length red dress.
“Jamie will freak when he sees that on you!” Charlotte smiled, shifting an armful of lingerie to look closer.
Claire pursed her lips. Thinking.
“Come on, Claire! You need to look like the rockstar wife you are.” Molly grabbed the dress. “Let’s go try it on. Come on!”
Initially she had only wanted to placate Molly. But when she saw herself in the dressing room mirror, she immediately knew how Jamie would react.
Three weeks later, she was correct.
She swirled slightly, enjoying the feel of the fabric swishing around her calves. The bite of cold air on her bare chest and belly. And the incredulous look on Jamie’s face, eyes dark.
“It’s very…red,” he stammered. “Are you wearing a bra?”
She rolled her eyes. “It’s our first event as a couple. And as husband and wife. We need to make a splash.”
He swallowed. Stepped closer to take her elbows, thumbs stroking the soft skin.
“I suppose. Every man will have his eyes on you tonight.”
She shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. I’ll only feel yours.”
His eyes darkened. “I like knowing, that at any time tonight, I can just do this…” One hand trailed across the fabric of the dress, over her breast, until it reached the strip of exposed skin spanning her neck to her navel. “And then this…” His thumb edged under the flap, teasing the underside of her breast, in the way he knew would drive her absolutely crazy.
Her lips parted. His eyes locked on hers – taking in the red tones sweeping her eyes and cheeks, and her scarlet lipstick, and the silver hoops hanging in her ears.
“Can we just stay here tonight?” he asked softly, not exactly joking.
She shook her head. “Jamie, Lou fucking Reed came to the show at Madison Square Garden last night and not only insisted on meeting you and complimenting your music, he invited us to his party tonight. He’s had his own addiction issues, he’s not a dummy. And we’ve talked about this, we can’t avoid parties forever. It will be good for all those people to see you.”
He removed his thumb from her breast, and bridged the gap between them to lean his forehead against hers. Without words, their hands found each other, twining and grasping.
As was their habit now, he pressed their thumbs together. The C she had tattooed at the base of his thumb, mingling with the J he had tattooed at the base of her thumb.
“It’s going to be so hard, Claire. Not that I don’t want to see people, or show you off, or help you get to know them.” He swallowed. “I’ve been to these kinds of parties before. Huge open bar. Waitresses in low cut dresses handing around trays of drugs like it was a tray of snacks. People doing lines on the tables. People…fucking in the bathroom.”
She swallowed. “I’ll stay with you the whole time. You can be my excuse to stop talking to someone if it gets too awkward. Or to say no, if something like that is offered to you. You know I don’t care, right?”
He nodded. Hands shaking.
“Do you want to call Raymond?”
He shook his head. “Not right now. Tomorrow, definitely. Let me see how I get through this. Maybe we agree on a few points for tonight?”
“Anything. I love you.”
He smiled. “OK. I’ve got gum in my pocket – that will keep us from getting too thirsty. And if we need something to drink, we’ll ask for club soda, and we’ll watch the drink poured in front of us. I don’t care if it’s awkward. I can’t trust.”
She released one hand from his grip, and slid it into the back pocket of his jeans. “Got it. And you know it’s easier if we touch, right? Hold my hand. Put your hand on my hip. I don’t care. I’ll be right there with you. And you’ll be right there for me.”
He stepped closer, and she parted her legs, and he stood between them. Pressing her hips against the bathroom counter.
“If we get separated, Jamie, I promise I’ll stay true to my sobriety, and to you.”
“I promise the same. I only want you.”
“I’ll touch my letter on you. Will you?”
“Yes,” he swallowed. Kissing the arch of her eyebrow. “That will help. But let’s also agree on a signal, if one of us feels need for love. And the need to go.”
She rubbed the tip of her nose against his. Breath so warm on his lips. “How about…” She tapped the center of his chest. “Touch here. Close to your heart. That’s where I feel need, when I want to love you. Is that where you feel it, too?”
“Yes,” he breathed. “It pools here. Like fire. God, I need to kiss you, Claire. Please let me kiss you.”
She turned her face away, smiling. “I don’t want you to smudge my lipstick. And I want you to hold that thought all night, Jamie. Hold on to that pool of fire. Can you do that for me?”
She felt his smile against her jaw. “Gonna be so, so good when we get back here,” he growled.
“I know, baby. It will keep us strong and true tonight. I love you.”
He pulled back a bit. Raised her hand to his lips. Kissed her wedding ring.
“I love you, Dr. Mrs. Fraser.”
She smiled. “I love you, you idiot. Come on. The limo should be waiting.”

RobStar Week 2024, Day 4 - Downtime
(Summer vibes here we go.)
---
The summer sun was out and not too hot. Crime was taking a lull. There was nothing pressing that he had to work on, no reports, nothing to inventory or re-order for Tower supplies, no paperwork to file.
So Robin had invited himself along on Starfire's trip to the mall, turning it into a bit of an impromptu date.
They bought cinnamon sticks from a vendor in the food court and sat under the skylight, yellow sun streaming down on them and warming the otherwise cool air of the mall.
"This is nice," he sighed, sneaking an arm around her waist in contentment.
"Indeed," she agreed. "It has been too long since we just did the hanging out together."
Robin munched on a stick until there was enough left to just pop in his mouth and swallow, then leaned back on the short wall with one hand. "What's left on the list?" he asked.
Starfire pursed her lip, staring into the distance blankly as she mentally ran over her tasks. "There is a new vampire suspense novel that I wished to purchase for Raven," she said. "And then I wished to see if the new Rachel Tanner album is out." She set the empty cup down, twining her fingers sheepishly. "And then... perhaps..." she trailed, blushing a cute shade of pink, "...since you are here... I may try on some dresses at the Gold Gala?"
Robin's brain quit functioning for about two seconds and then he cleared his throat loudly, averting his face and feeling heat rush to his cheeks. "Uh, sure Star," he squeaked. "Whatever you want."
She giggled and gave him a peck on the cheek. "I do so love how flustered you get," she teased.
"What?" he grumbled, crossing his arms. "You're gorgeous and it does things to me."
"And it is adorable." Starfire rose to her feet, grabbing up the cup and stepping the three feet to the trashcan to dump it. Then she held out her hand, a gentle, affectionate look on her face.
Robin ducked his eyes again, but reached up to take her hand, letting her pull him up. He moved immediately into her personal space, wrapping an arm around her waist again and keeping her close to his side.
Wordlessly, with an unspoken signal, they began making their way across the food court.
This was... comfortable, Robin thought, leaning his head a bit into her shoulder. He loved moments like this with her, moments where he could forget all the pressures and worries of hero life and just be normal.
If he closed his eyes, blocked everything out, he could pretend they were just two regular kids having a date.
The hustle and bustle of civilians in the mall around him settled into him like pleasant white noise, lulling him into a sense of calm and peace.
-TT-
He let Starfire pull him from shop to shop, because of course they didn't only visit the bookstore and the music shop, her endless curiosity had her dragging him into multiple other shops because something caught her eye, and he watched her press her face and hands up to the glass of windows or squee over a cute plush toy or watch in fascination as a clerk demonstrate how to make the bar soaps she sold.
God, she was pretty.
They'd been dating almost a year and his heart still thudded to a stop at the sight of her, very evident when she finally led them into the formal dresswear shop and began sampling merchandise for him.
Dark sapphire blue was definitely her color, he decided, as he gaped slack-jawed at her, at the shapely form-fitting sparkly number with the leg slit up to there that was like a sledgehammer to his brain, making him incoherent jelly.
When he finally wiped the drool away and collected himself, he bought it for her while she was distracted with another section, admiring the strappy sandals that were currently on sale.
Not too long afterwards, he held her hand as multiple shopping bags bounced between them, the sunlight tickling on the back of his neck, pleasant and warm. They walked along the sidewalk, leaving the shopping complex, enjoying the summer air and the quiet and each other's company.
He slid his eyes towards her, shyly, heart warming at how calm and happy she looked.
"I had a good time," he told her, speaking up and breaking the comfortable silence.
"I as well," she murmured. "Thank you," she said. "I am glad you chose to be with me."
Warmth and happiness bubbled under his sternum at the words, and he wanted to say something super cheesy in return, something about how he would choose to be with her every single day if she'd let him.
But instead he just enjoyed her vibrant presence, and their footsteps tapping on the pavement, the quiet waft of the sea-tinged breeze and the pleasant sunlight and said nothing.

Photo Booth
Universe: Resident Evil

Pairing: Stepbro!Leon S. Kennedy x Reader
Warnings: Not many, just the fact that Leon is your stepbrother and he is .5 of a little shit. Otherwise, this is a good, old fashioned fluff piece.
a/n: Hihi hello hello :) I've been trying to claw my way out of depression for a while, but here's some cute Leon content in the meantime!
@lipglossanon !! thank you for being such a wonderful writer, honestly reading you has been really inspiring as of late! and your characterization of the Leons you have are among my very favorite.
It not my best work by any means, but I hope anyone reading this enjoys <3
--
The liminal space of a mall was the place where you could see through a person, like light through glass. You'd get to see what stores they prefer to go to, what mall food they like to eat (or if they can't), what they buy vs what they don't.
Or sometimes, as is the case with you and your weird, pseudo-freudian stepbrother-boyfriend Leon, you just get boba and mess around.
There were other things you'd like to do with him, sure. Sometimes you two would catch a movie- or fuck each other until you're both sensitive and whimpering (as young lovers often do). Really depended on the day.
But it was earlier in the morning and it was a free, clear Saturday, in the haze of a temperate spring. And, the last couple of days were kind of stressful. Keeping up separate social lives, exams, dealing with your shared parents- sometimes just being apart from each other was okay.
You were starting to suspect something in Leon. You didn't know what it was, really. Everything was in a haze with him- truer emotions he always hid behind something snarky and barbed. And since you could never really get an accurate read on him, you could only try to squint in the dark and decipher the signs in front of you.
Still, something foundational was shifting. And there was a strange feeling in your stomach that had been there all morning, and it wasn't bad, per se; but it was constant and unusual. You sipped on your boba and started chewing.
You and Leon were both sitting on public benches. The time was before most of the retail shops started setting up, only the food court was open. You laid your head on Leon's shoulder and closed your eyes while you both soaked in the sun's warmth.
The mall was bright and quiet, not many were there yet. You still felt a bit sleepy, but it didn't seem like Leon minded resting either. There was a difference in the emotions you feel someone going through when you rest your head on their shoulder- and the way Leon's was giving into the weight of your head spelled relaxation. The both of you spent a bit of your morning like this. You lifted your head and glanced at how the sunlight reflected off of Leon's golden hair. How it also cut a shadow at the curve of his jaw.
"You wanna walk around?" You asked with your voice low, not wanting to disrupt the quiet, alive whirring of the building. Leon looked at you, smiled a bit and nodded his head before getting up.
When you caught up to pace with him, you decided to annoy him and cross pinkies. He retaliated by taking hold of your entire hand, and you tried not to make a big deal about it. Your heart was starting to beat really fast, though.
You thought he would let go after a couple of seconds. He didn't.
Exiting the first floor common area to the escalators surrounding it, you both enjoyed the warmth of a second floor perch. Leon hasn't let go of your hand yet, but you were joking around about other people you were seeing at the mall, or the vaguely strange sale ads you'd see posted on windows.
It was light, conversation felt easy for once.
And then Leon saw something, and you watched the way his eyes captured a glint of absolute mischief.
Your eyes followed the laser point focus of his- and oh.
Oh.
A photo booth.
And before you knew it, the distance between you and the box was already halved from Leon practically yanking your arm off. It didn't hurt, so all you could do was laugh.
Walking up to it, Leon already got his wallet out and was feeding the machine bills. You decided to slip in and look around inside. All photo booths look different- this one was pretty new and sparkly.
Not long after, Leon swept the curtains and stepped in with a mean smirk. You got yourself ready, trying to make yourself look alright while Leon selected to start through the menu.
You always felt a weird sort of anxiety in photo booths. They never gave anybody enough time to actually prepare for a photo, but Leon was already doing someth- "Hey-!"
He quickly stepped behind you, caged you in his arms, gave two hand horns, and made such a twisted face he actually did kind of resemble the devil, because in his heart of hearts, Leon S. Kennedy was a dork.
You decided that if he was going to suffocate you with all the muscle he was trying to show off, you were going to get a picture of biting it.
The bite wasn't too hard, but the quick noise that Leon gave was mostly out of being startled anyways. He quickly retaliated by flicking your arm before posing for the next-
"Let's do a nicer one," you interject, quietly and quickly. You both prepare and in time, you're smiling together while Leon has his arm draped over your shoulders. It all happened so quickly and concisely that the warm feeling you got in your stomach from all the affectionate, silly, friendly contact was delayed.
The countdown started again. Leon almost shoved you in front of him, but instead of putting his arms over your chest and neck and face, (being annoying about it), he placed them gently over your waist. And then when the camera flashed, he was kissing your cheek.
You turned around in his arms, not really caring about the photos anymore. But he was the one that leaned down and kissed you gingerly, and with meaning. His lips were always so soft and smooth against yours-
The camera flashed. You two were together a little longer, and then you both separated. It was a few long seconds where time just stopped, and you could swear that if you opened the curtain and tried to find one of the rare morning pedestrians of the mall, they would be left unmoving.
But all you could do was look at Leon. It didn't help that he was so pretty. But there was this weird flash of emotion in his eyes, that same one you couldn't read and he wasn't looking away-
The camera flash made you both jump a little, and then Leon gave a quiet, nervous laugh to himself that sparked yours. He looked at you again, an upward pull of his lips that didn't seem too mean anymore. "Better get those photos,"
"Yeah," you offer back, already leaving the booth. He followed you, and not long after, the booth started to give out a noise before producing two copies of the same strip. Leon quickly snatched them before you could even hope to grab them, and he held them out of your view after that.
"Leon," He was snickering. That pretty smile he hasn't dropped for 5 minutes now has had its teasing quality reapplied. Irritation quickly bubbles back up in your throat.
"Ugh, Leon, you-" He does that little shit older brother thing where he lets the strip creep just into your reach before yanking it away a couple of times, but he doesn't do it too much. He gives you one of the copies after starting to giggle at you.
You shake your head, ready to be embarrassed at your own face or maybe even his, and- well, the first photo has you laughing. Your head is tilted backward and your eyes are closed, and the laughs pour out of your throat like smooth wine.
"Leon you're such a dork,-"
"Oh ok! And we're not gonna talk about the absolutely feral thing latching itself to my arm-,"
"Noo~, we're not," You interrupt teasingly, and you take a look back at the pictures. The air swiftly changes from playful, easy and teasing to meaningful, endearing- kind of tense in a way. Leon looked beautiful, and you looked nice too, and now you just noticed that Leon is right behind you actively gauging your reaction.
The third photo was almost too sweet and intimate to look at publicly, and you could feel the tips of your ears start to heat up. Leon's face is mostly obscured, sure, but the way you react to why it's obscured is so sweet and genuine it kind of embarrasses you. Your lips try to hide a smile and your eyes are cast downward and away from Leon- low, but not closed. One of your arms rests on the lean coils of muscle wrapped around your center, while the other reaches up for your hand to rest on his head.
The fourth makes you inhale a little sharper, and you can now feel the high part of your cheekbones heat with your ears. Leon's chin is resting on your shoulder now, and you can't even imagine the shit-eating grin he must be wearing on his face. Well, both of your faces can't be seen by the camera, if that's any consolation to your poor, heated skin- you might melt ice at this point.
You don't know why it has you so weirdly dizzy, but maybe it's the way Leon looks so boyish, almost soft kissing you. His head is so slightly tilted, and the way his body curls around yours is just so engaged-
The fifth one is sweet in a different way. It makes your heart instantly crackle and spark for hope, which any sort of tired rationality your dopamine abused brain has left is probably screaming at.
There's that fear in your chest, but there's no denying the fact that there's a light glimmering in Leon's sea glass eyes that you haven't seen from him too many times.
It's a look that makes your entire body feel warm, like your skin is being pricked by needles. At this point, you've stopped looking at the photos altogether and buried your face in your hands. It makes Leon's chin lift off your shoulder, and you hear a chuckle come from him, but nothing sarcastic.
"C'mon, stores are opening soon, weirdo," And when he says that you realize that there's warmth behind his words. You lift your head and look at him, and he's scratching his nose but- is he blushing too? Oh.
Oh.
He is.
Probably not as scorching hot as you, but still. He starts walking, you start walking with him. And then, he takes your hand like that entire thing just didn't happen, and you find that you can't really stop smiling. Even if you reduce it to the smallest pull of your lips, it's still on your face for a while longer.

last minute shopping - eddie munson holiday blurb
I work retail and this popped in my head while refolding a graphic tee table and it's truly just a bunch of fluf and eddie being a cute boi
~ enjoy and happy holidays ~
word count: 1.2k
The holidays. A time focused around family, the reason for the season, cozy sweaters and hot cocoa. Twinkling lights couldn't be missed for miles as every house had some sort of big bulk convenience store decoration. No need for 'frosted windows in a can', oh no, Hawkins was seeing a very white Christmas with snow fall never ending and the chill of the wind cutting through every jacket and parka leaving no survivors behind. The joy was like an electric buzz in the air, only one thing could diminish the feeling.
The Starcourt Mall.
Eddie wasn't the best planner, never had been. Despite this year trying his best to be on top of the holidays he still had yet to get something for Uncle Wayne. With Christmas Day only two days away, it was a scramble for the perfect gift and it was absolute hell trying to get anywhere in the mall.
He could try The Gap? Nah, too pricey.
Maybe a gift certificate to Scoops Ahoy? But when would Wayne ever find the time to use it? He's always working.
Eddie sighed in frustration, running a hand through his mop of curls. He took a moment to look around the area, peeking over the heads of bustling mothers herding their kids to meet Santa, dads sitting on benches with shopping bags galore, teenagers running around the food court with their Orange Julius's sloshing all over the place. This was a nightmare. Slim pickings. Would Wayne be upset over a hand drawn card?
He was near giving up when he spotted Macy's on the far end. It was a department store, and while it seemed busy, it wasn't as congested as the inner workings of the mall. He squeezed his way through and slid through a sliver of space in between two groups of families; one included a mother scolding her husband for losing their credit card, the other group had a child crying over not getting the remote control car on the front table. Eddie pursed his lips, so glad he wasn't in that stage of life just yet.
There seemed to be never ending options for Eddie to look through, he wondered why he hadn't stopped in in the first place. It also made this decision much more difficult. He knew that he would definitely be walking out with something, no doubt, but genuinely the starting point slowly began to stump him and he felt his once eager energy depleting. A three pack of ties? When did Wayne dress up? A mug? Sure, lets add to the hundreds of them adorning the trailer wall. Maybe a fancy glass set? Even if the glasses were on sale, it was definitely out of Eddie's comfort range of spending.
"Well the sign says fifty percent off!"
A screech from an older woman pulled Eddie out of his daze and his attention turned to the scene on his right.
"Ma'am, I understand your frustration, however the sign details specifically to the gift sets. This sweater is on the table, but is signed for thirty percent off."
Eddie shifted his gaze from the woman, red in the face, almost matching her Christmas red sweater, to you. You stood behind a counter, not currently in use to ring up customers, but he noticed a stack of scarves next to you. He assumed you'd been cleaning up. You wore emerald green, very festive, and an elf hat to match. Despite your professional aura, the bell on the end of hat could almost send him into a fit of giggles every time your head even moved an inch.
"I'd be more than happy to show you-" you started, before being interrupted.
"You can show me to your manager! This is false advertising!" the women shouted, drawing a few more eyes into encounter.
"Ma'am, I'll have to ask you to keep from yelling in the store," you responded, face void of emotion. "If you would let me-"
"I'll yell if I want to! This is a free country!"
Eddie watched you take a deep breath, before picking a landline off the counter. You typed quietly while the woman continued her banter. You faked a smile to her before speaking again. "Hi, hey Ron, it's Y/n! Yeah, yeah, doing good, hey listen, would you mind sending security down to gifts? I have a disgruntled customer who refuses to listen. Awesome, thanks so much!"
The womens jaw dropped as you placed the phone back to the receiver, Eddie snickering quietly at this interaction.
"Who do you think you are!" the woman shouted, feigning a hand to her chest dramatically. "Do you know who I am?"
You smiled and shook your head, folding your hands on the counter. "No, ma'am, I don't! However I am the manager of this department and am asking you to remove yourself before security gets here."
The woman stared dumbfounded, slowly backing up from your bubble. Eddie stared in wonder at the interaction, and if he was honestly, completed turned on by your dominance.
"Merry Christmas!" you smiled, waving as the woman moved away from the scene.
Eddie noticed security at the end of the walkway and he shook his head, laughing slightly. Finding the nerve to walk up to you, he leaned softly against the counter and looked to the way in which the Grinch had left. "I think that was better than any of those movies playing in the theater right now."
You looked to him when he had approached, and smirked a bit at his words. "I try. Gotta keep some sort of sanity in this place."
"I get it, it's a madhouse in here," Eddie nodded, giving his best smile before extending his hand. "Eddie."
Your smirk simmered into a smile and you shook his hand back, nodding. "Y/n."
"Well, Y/n, I'm wondering if you might be of some use to me," he said, straightening back up.
"Oh?" you questioned, crossing your arms.
"Yeah, I mean, you are the manager of this department," Eddie said. "I'm in the works for the perfect gift."
"Ah," you nodded, stepping out from around the counter and glancing around your section. "Mom? Sibling? Girlfriend?"
Eddie stifled a laugh and he slowly followed beside you. "Uh, no mom. No siblings. And no girlfriend."
Your face erupted in pink and you stumbled over your words. "Oh, um, I'm sorry, I just assumed-"
"Hey, hey," Eddie grinned. "All good here. I'm shopping for my uncle, wanna try to find him something nice. Not much of a budget but I figured I'd find something on sale."
You felt your panic subside and sat a cool hand against your cheek, the heat subsiding. "Well, I'm sure we can find something perfect for him! Maybe something for you? Doesn't hurt to treat yourself sometimes."
Eddie pursed his lips a little bit and dug his hands in his pockets, following slightly behind you. He watched the way the bell of your hat jingled with every step you took. You arms slightly swayed when you walked, and you barely made a sound when taking a step. He began to notice the little things, and started to quietly thank the stars he'd came into the mall after all.
"I think I already have."

Tit for Tat: Nontraditional Offerings
I have a personal rule when petitioning a deity or spirit or ancestor to help me accomplish a thing. The bigger the ask, the bigger the offering. Whatever we offer, it’s a sacrifice.
Of course I do the usual things; flowers, favored food, particular alcohols and beverages, tobacco, incense. All of these things may be welcomed, but I believe that when I’m petitioning a deity or spirit to do a bigger task or to guide me on deeper work, my offering shouldn’t be low effort if I expect them to work on my behalf. My assumption is that deities too get bored with sameness, and if I’m trying to get their attention, I need to offer something that will delight them or intrigue them.
That isn’t to say that small offerings aren’t effective, but if I’m petitioning Athena to help me see justice in a court case, for example, I want her to know I’m serious and that I’m willing to dig deep to have her on my side. I’m pulling out all stops to get her to help me, commensurate to my ability to provide offerings. In other words, if all I’m able to do is buy Athena a bunch of grocery store flowers, that’s enough because that’s the best I can do. But if I’m able take that further and grow and nurture a garden of flowers dedicated to her, I’m going to do that, because I want her to see me making an effort. I want her to know that this petition is important to me and I’m willing to work to get her help.
Big effort offerings don’t have to cost a lot of money and they don’t have to be ostentatious. We’re not talking about sacrificing babies and we’re not emptying our bank accounts. The amount of effort is the point here, and our willingness to go beyond the typical is what we’re aiming for. I think long term commitment is important too.
One of my favorite offerings to Hekate is a yearly donation to Coyote Project. 10% of every sale of my Coyote candles goes to them to help educate and impact legislation on coyote killing contests in the United States. Dogs are sacred to her and according to Apollonius of Rhodes, the barking of hounds signaled that she was near. Ovid tells us that black dogs were sacrificed to her, but I don’t offer animal sacrifices, and it feels appropriate to make offerings to her instead to protect this species of canine. I also make food donations to my local animal shelter monthly. A key aspect of these donations for me, is that I commit to ongoing support to the Coyote Project and my local shelter indefinitely rather than just once.
A few years ago someone asked me what an appropriate offering would be to Hera to help with some marital issues. Rather than offer the typical flowers and incense, I suggested they give up something. I suggested they give up cigarettes or alcohol or some other vice. It’s a unconventional offering, but it works two-fold: she’d be giving up something detrimental to her health and maybe to her relationship, and she’d also be treating her own body as an offering. In other words, her body becomes a temple to Hera.
Here are other offerings to consider that go beyond the wine, flowers, incense routine.
Commit to a fitness or health regime.
Volunteer in your community.
Prepare a dumb (silent) supper.
Learn a new skill and practice it in their honor.
Write a poem, play, or music as offering.
Spend time learning about them.
Prepare a ritual wine or mead and use it in your offerings.
Make art depicting them.
Sing songs or recite their hymns.
Make revelry and dance and laugh and howl at the moon.
Grow a garden of plants dedicated to your deity.
Give up something, i.e. soda, liquor, excess spending, red meat, unhealthy relationships.
Clean a local park or stream.
Commit to prayer or meditation everyday.
Dedicate a perfume or scent to them and wear it daily or during ritual.
Practice nature stewardship.
Make a pilgrimage to sacred sites.
Build a dedicated altar outside.
Ritually clean your altar space regularly.
Take a ritual bath and anoint yourself with perfumes and oils.
Donate time or money to charities.
This isn’t an exhaustive list; there are many other ways of honoring and petitioning deity. And offering doesn’t end at the stage where you’re asking for something; it’s just good manners to make an offering of thanks once the petition is granted.
