Nancy Ames is an American folk singer and songwriter. Ames was born in Washington, D.C., the granddaughter of Ricardo Joaquín Alfaro, who served as President of Panama from 1931 to 1932. A folk singer with a partially Spanish language repertoire, Ames was signed to Liberty Records. The A side of her first single was entitled "Bonsoir Cher, ("Goodnight Dear") and the B side was "Cucurrucucú paloma".She broke the top 100 twice in 1966 with "He Wore the Green Beret", side A, and "War is a Card Game", side B. These were her answer songs to Staff Sgt. Barry Sadler's "Ballad of the Green Berets".

twelve hour love story

Around 11:30PM, New Years Eve, I am faced with a choice: should I leave you behind? Delete the unopened messages, throw away the cowboy comfort and my pink bolo tie...

... the ocean in a bottle and a coffee cup, trading finger tattoos and giggling at ourselves. I don’t remember a single thing we talked about that night, but I remember taking a phone call and half expecting you’d leave. You did not.

I should have left you alone in the hotel lobby - sitting cross legged with your wide eyes. But you followed me with a guarded kindness.

I call you a dreamer. You call me the devil, with a perfect halo tapping your headboard, over and over... You watch me like a fire. You touch me like a legend. And you tell me that you love me. Maybe to absolve your guilt - I don’t know, 

but you spilt the very last bottle, and it came pouring out of my mouth - “I love you, too”. 

I don’t even get a chance to figure out if it were make believe. I feel hungrily unsatisfied; insatiable. I am knocking at your door, and sometimes, in dreams, I hear you answer. Are you dreaming of me, too? Will it stop when I know the answer? When I write the poem? When I finish the song?

I knock twice more. I echo ‘we can’t’.

We've taken a lot of father-daughter portraits with Voyageur over the years but this remains one of my favourites.⁠ ⁠ When my show GlobalVillage was on CBC Radio, we did a feature on an Ottawa multicultural band called Galitcha, lead by Kuljit Sodhi. We met at various festivals and conferences and he is absolutely the loveliest person you'd ever want to meet. So gentle and quiet and smiling that you'd never guess that he's a madman on the dhol drum or a serious tango dancer but he IS those things! AND a civil engineering technologist!⁠ ⁠ He first encountered Voyageur at the 2007 OCFF (now FolkMusicOntario) conference and he completely connected with the guitar and its mission. One year ago, my friend and incredible artist Alysha Brilla agreed to be my official mentor, as part of an artist training mentorship grant I successfully received from Ontario Arts Council. As an independent artist-entrepreneur, Alysha taught me a lot about the business and marketing aspect of the music industry.

This picture is from when we were both official showcase artists at the Folk Alliance International music conference in Kansas City - which would not have happened for me had Alysha not shown me how to apply.

A year later, I am so honoured to be opening for Alysha’s ‘Rooted’ album release concert this Friday Sept 29, at Starlight Waterloo. 8 years ago, I co-wrote and directed a full length musical also titled ‘Rooted.’ Living and loving life in Kitchener-Waterloo and the world comes full circle.

I will be singing my ancestor songs then dancing my heart out to your new pieces Alysha. Thank you for opening your world to me and giving me a hand up. I’m a critic while you’re an optimist. I’m judgemental while you are generous of spirit. Please keep influencing me :P

We both know the world trains women to compete and tear each other down, but instead we are a dream team, challenging oppression thru art, while being femme, fierce and fearless.
