#621: theres one guy called Darmuid Early, who is described as "The LeBron James of Excel", and has won the Excel Esports championships (FMWC). he noticed that he was the only person in his workplace who could use excel well and he capitalised on this. now he has a data firm and has written 67 books on spreadsheets! he spent two days in australia helping someone turn a monthly 40-hour task into a 2-minute job. he gave a seminar in trinidad helping turn a 3-day process into 4 minutes. he has a whole website just flexing his accomplishments. when asked in an interview whether hes popular he says he has lots of freinds at work. when asked do you get any fan mail, he replies "yes. well, i get a lot of LinkedIn connection requests."

oh yeah by the way, he was given $1000 for stopping a fan with his tongue. a most random accomplishment.

這是兩個禮拜前看到的東西，ESPN 轉播 Financial Modeling World Cup (FMWC)，一個比 Microsoft Excel 的競賽：「The World Excel Championship is being broadcast on ESPN and it’s absolutely wild」。 看 wiki 的資料，FMWC 是從 2020 年開始辦的比賽，然後沒什麼意外的 Microsoft 是贊助商… 要注意 Excel Esports 這隻英國戰隊跟 Microsoft Excel 就沒有關係了，只是名稱剛好有 Excel 這個詞；Excel Esports 戰隊主打的是 LoL、Fortnite 與 VALORANT 這幾個比較廣為人知的電子競技項目。 目前看起來 FMWC Open 2022 會在今年 Q4 辦，到時候應該會再冒出一些新聞…

some of the reblogs i am getting are making me think this might be useful, so here's some tips for people using windows 10 who maybe are unfamiliar with some of the shortcuts

the more commonly known ones that people assume are obvious are that alt+tab lets you switch between windows, ctrl+z is undo, ctrl+y is redo

the easiest way to find anything, including settings, is to just hit the windows key on your keyboard to open the start menu and then type it

so if you hit the windows key and type 'clipboard' the clipboard settings will pop right up

which is handy because my first tip is to enable clipboard history

now instead of just hitting ctrl+x to cut, ctrl+c to copy, and ctrl+v to paste whatever you cut/copied last, you can also hit win+v. that will let you choose which thing to paste of the things you've recently cut or copied

hitting print screen will copy a screenshot of your whole desktop to your clipboard, which you can paste into paint if you want. or you can hit shift+win+s to activate the snipping tool and only screenshot a selected portion of the screen. it gets copied into your clipboard, or you can hit the notification that pops up in the notification center to save it. if you hit the shortcut and change your mind about screenshotting just hit esc to leave the selection screen without clogging up your clipboard.

if you want to use the print screen key to select just part of the screen by default, hit win and search for 'ease of access keyboard settings'. one of the options is to change the print screen shortcut.

win+. (that's a period/full stop) or win+; will bring up an emoji picker that includes kaomojis ( •̀ ω •́ )✧

if you hit the button for task view on your toolbar or else hit win+tab you can add virtual desktops

if you make one for serious business and one for dicking around, you can easily switch between them using ctrl+win+left/right

win+up will maximize a program and win+down will minimize it. win+left/right will make the window take up the left or right side of the screen

win+d will either hide all your windows and show the desktop or bring your windows back up (only the ones you had open when you hit win+d)

there's probably more but either i don't use them often enough to care or else i use them so much it doesn't occur to me that anyone would need to be told

The Pixel 4's Radar Technology Is About to Go Mainstream

The Pixel 4's Soli radar technology has returned in the form of an open-source API.

Google just quietly revealed an open-source API standard called Ripple based on the company’s Soli radar technology. Radar was partly responsible for the Google Pixel 4's most gimmicky features, but it’s also how Google tracks sleep in the the newest Nest Hub, and it opens the door for really interesting use cases.

The API is for devices with frequency-modulated continuous-wave (or FMWC) sensors, which are also being used in gadgets like the sleep-tracking smart bulbs that Sengled announced at CES.

Google’s ATAP division, which also worked on Soli, is behind this launch. Automaker Ford and Blumio, a company working on blood pressure-monitoring sensors, are the first consumer brands to hop on board with Ripple. Ford told The Verge it plans to test Ripple’s use as “advanced exterior radars” for its Co-Pilot360 driver-assist technology. Component makers like Texas Instruments, Infineon, and NXP have also signed on to help develop for it.

Curiously, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the trade organization behind CES, is driving the push to get companies on board. The CTA offers a bulk of documentation on getting started with Ripple, which means industry-wide adoption is possible.

Opening Ripple up to other developers is exciting since this is a relatively non-invasive technology that can be used in interesting ways. It took a while for Google to figure that out, however. When Google launched the Pixel 4 with Soli radar baked inside, it flopped because it wasn’t the right venue for the technology. All the radar did in the Pixel was enable you to hands-free shuffle through music and quickly unlock the device. It wasn’t game-changing in the least.

Soli made more sense in the second-generation Nest Hub, where Google uses it to enable sleep-tracking from a non-wearable device. The radar can detect how deeply you sleep and even help determine if you snore. It can also be used to pick up on how people move around a room or how many people are in a building.

Ripple’s other major appeal is that the radar-tracking technology doesn’t rely on a microphone or camera to detect movement, so it’s an easier sell for companies who want to make products that are more privacy-minded. Ivan Poupyrev, Google ATAP’S director of engineering, billed it as a technology that can help solve “critical use cases in a privacy-respecting way.”

Amazon has also adopted radar-based tracking, even receiving the go-ahead from the FCC to make its own bedside device. It’s unclear whether any companies will use radar to better serve you ads, but anything is possible.

ROXAS BOULEVARD, Manila, March 2 -- The Philippine Navy (PN) concluded the two-day Western Pacific Naval Symposium International Fleet Review (WPNS-IFR) Final Planning Conference held Thursday, February 27 at the Diamond Hotel in Manila.

The  planning conference led by the Fleet-Marine Warfare Center (FMWC) of the Naval Education, Training, and Doctrine Command (NETDC0 was attended by representatives coming from 17 participating countries, different Philippine government agencies and non-government partners.

It aimed to finalize the planning for the WPNS-IFR, confirm the concept of the IFR Plan and related activities, synchronize the planning of the different Phases of Execution, and resolve issues and concerns of all parties related to the conduct of WPNS IFR scheduled this May 2020 to be hosted by the Philippines.

NETDC commander, Rear Adm. Loumer Bernabe urged  attendees active involvement and participation addint that the PN is proud to host the Fleet Review that serves as a testament to the cooperation and camaraderie inspired by the shared aspiration of a free and safe Western Pacific. He also underscorded  the theme for this year’s WPNS which focuses on shared ocean governance. 

During the two day meeting the participants discussed the Finalized Working Group Outbrief  where questions were answered by Fleet-Marine Ready Force commander and Naval Task Group-IFR head Commo. Toribio Adaci and  FMWC director, Capt. Richard David presented the PN-level Task Organization for the WPNS-IFR.

Naval Inspector General and concurrent Chief of Naval Staff in acting capacity, Rear Adm. Sean Anthony Villa, lauded the attendees for meeting the objectives of the event. He reminded all attendees of having the “4Cs” – Cooperation, Coordination, Collaboration, and Commitment – that ensured the success of this event and the smooth conduct of the WPNS-IFR proper. (PN)
