Toilet seals for sanitary facilities

Wax ring

The simplest of all toilet seals is the wax ring. This type of seal has been around for quite some time and is still a good choice under the right circumstances. If the flange is 6mm above floor level, as it should be, a wax ring is a reliable option, although many plumbers don't use this seal as much anymore because there are now better options.

Wax ring with sleeve

The wax ring with sleeve is a very reliable seal for a toilet, even though it can be messy. This type of wax ring comes in many different styles, from extra thick to several sizes that fit 7.5 cm and 10 cm drains.

If you have a normal height toilet flange, you can use a regular wax ring with a sleeve. If your flange is at floor level or slightly below, you can use an extra-thick wax ring. If the flange is less than 6 mm below floor level, you should use a flange extension to increase the height of the flange, or remove and replace the old floor flange and adjust it to the correct height.

Wax ring with felt

Wax rings with felt are designed for wall-hung toilets. The felt helps keep the wax in place to ensure a good seal. Felt fusible rings are also used for urinals, they are just smaller fusible rings.

Sponge seals

Sponge gaskets are typically used as an alternative to felt wax rings, meaning they are mainly used for wall-hung toilets and urinals. These sponge seals can also be used for floor-mounted toilets when specified. Sponge gaskets come in many different thicknesses, so you can choose the thickness that is right for your application.

Waxless toilet bowl gaskets

For those who are tired of wax rings, there are a few types of wax-free gaskets. They have a special rubber gasket that fits on the bottom of the toilet, and then a deep gasket flange that goes into the drain pipe and is sealed by a leak-proof O-ring that prevents the bottom flange from splashing and rotting.

The O-ring not only prevents water from backing up, but also prevents waste gas odors from leaking back into the bathroom. Fluidmaster manufactures such a waxless ring that can be fitted to 7.5 cm or 10 cm drains.

Waxless foam gasket

This is a soft, treated foam that can do one thing that is not recommended for wax gaskets: It can stack. These gaskets are large enough to seal a toilet with a flange height of 1 cm above the floor to 1 cm below the floor.

If more height is required, the foam gaskets can be stacked with ease. Unlike most other types of gaskets, foam gaskets will keep a good seal even if the toilet wobbles. This type of seal allows you to seat the toilet multiple times, unlike wax rings that break once and need to be replaced.
