On no particular Thursday morning, an old man perched on top of a building.
A gorgeous one, surely. Bright dawn untouched by clouds, albeit occasional jetlines streaking through blue. Often in times of youth, the man would gaze up at the sky from his mother’s garden. He wondered how it must feel to reach out and stick his hands through those thick, rolling clouds of the sunset. Maybe they were soft, like spun candy floss. Soft shades of dusty pink, just like the the roses that climbed the brick of that humble English cottage. It seemed like there were always fresh boquets adorning a new corner of the house; his mother’s signature. Someday, he would have his own cottage… a garden. He would match the shades of the sky, tuck them away, like living paint swatches, as if the sun never really had to set when he was home. He could freeze time, painted along the walls of his home in healthy petals…
No time for that now.
Momentarily, he felt the tips of his fingers ache. The years had worn away like cracked and peeling paint, leaving no room for the likes of flowers and swaying grass he so often thought of. There was always work to be done. Today was no different.
Laying on his stomach, he carefully steadied the rifle and settled on his target. The streets of Berlin lay comfortably three stories below, cobblestone sidewalks glittering in the morning sun. All too familiar, countless times before he had spent days like this.
But something felt different. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it. Perhaps he hadn’t slept well, perhaps the extra cup of coffee that morning was making his chest flutter. Even at this age, he had never before felt winded climbing a few flights of stairs. Absurd. Time must surely be catching up to him. He cracked a small smile. Shifting his weight, he steadied the target, trained hands focused and steady. He slowly rested a finger against the trigger.
Shaded cafe tables lined the pavement. A short politician, seated at the foot of the adjacent building, reading the newspaper; blissfully unaware to the world…..
But something was wrong. His arm felt weak. There was a slight tingling slowly treading it’s way down the shoulder. The more he ignored it, the more prominent it became.
Until he knew.
But it was already too late.
He rolled over in pain, managing to weakly smash the hidden belt button with his thumb. Breath short, he slowly sidled against the brick, one hand over his chest, one searching for the handheld transmitter. Locating it in his breast pocket, he gripped it close to a sweating face, and spoke in rough German, “Bitte schicken sie einen arzt. Ich habe einen herzinfarkt erlebt.”
The opportunity for the shot had been missed. A first for him, he hadn’t blundered a shot in over forty years.
No matter; it would have to be resolved another time. The boy would understand… of course he would.
Time passed. Maybe one hour. Perhaps two. Eventually the sound of sirens echoed in the distance from below the rooftop. He kept eyes on the industrial roof door, focusing on steady breathing, and counting backwards from one hundred. By the time it was thrust open, he had lost count of how much time had passed. The sun was approaching peak now. Three men helped him to his feet, and six steady hands guided him down three floors to safety in a stretch of minutes he couldn’t quite recall.
The ambulance was warm, smelling of cloth and antiseptic.

Twelve days later, he had recovered well enough to be transported by train back to the orphanage. The boy had wasted no time flying out to the hospital, as well as devising an agenda tailored for maximum recovery, complete with a personal dietician, exercise, daily routines, check ups, and as much rest as possible for the next foreseeable six months.
But things were still frustrating. Completing mundane tasks left him winded. The old coffee habit surrendered, he was now forced to explore a bleak section of decaffienated teas left for him during breakfast.
The weeks were slow and quiet. To minimize stress, the detective insisted on the swift halt of any work for the man until he was well enough. Of course he did. After a few weeks of this new routine, the old man felt well enough to carry a lawn chair outside near the brick of the orphanage to enjoy the sun. He planted himself firmly in a well lit spot with a glass of lemonade, somewhere outside the eastern wing. There wasn’t much to do, except relax.
He noticed this side of the building possessed an exceptional amount of weeds, and dead grass. Dusty soil extended out into the lawn, leaving patches of bald spots where his chair lay.
He sat for another few minutes, frowning, before folding the chair up and decidedly moving back inside.
The next day he was back. Garden recliner unfolded. He stared at empty dirt.
For a third day. And a fourth.
By the time he had spent a week grimacing in the direction of trampled garden boxes and dandelions, he knew what had to be done. There was no question.
Sandals, gloves, sunhat……shovel in hand. He lifted his foot to bury the spade into the earth, scooping mounds of parched and rock ridden soil out of the way. He made sure to sure to rest when he felt dizziness approaching. He had barely started his work when he realized he had exterted himself enough for one day. The efforts contributed had barely dented the expanse which was to be covered.
He was back the next day…….and the next, accomplishing small victories at a time. The weather was warmer now; trees began to bloom around the orphanage as mid-spring made it’s way forward. A few children gathered in groups to watch the man toil on occasion, some fetching him lemonade or handkerchiefs as he required them. A few weeks later, the side of the building was primed with fresh soil and newly built borders. Now the real work began.
He started with roses, a shade of pink much like the ones his mother used to care for. A small selection of gorgeous tea hybrids, each sprouting hundreds of blooms per bush. He unwrapped plastic from bare stalks, and dug gloved hands into soft, fragrant soil. It was therapeutic. Almost as though this relieved more stress than any breathing exercise could manage. Even more exciting, he realized, was the idea of planning a garden. Which flowers to plant where, the possibility of a patio, perhaps a fountain, definitely a wildflower section. By noon, he had envisioned and constructed a rough sketch that would cover each side of the orphanage.
How could he have wasted all this time running around London, pointing a gun, when there was so much to be done here? He scolded himself after recognizing now just how much he had neglected this residence, as it was home to so many: to himself, to those running it, and most importantly, to the children. The youths who, doubtlessly, would eventually lend hands build the future of this world. Who else, more than they, deserved a beautiful place to call home?
For the tougher parts: laying brick, moving rocks, and transporting filler materials, a small team of landscapers were hired. Occasionally on weekends, the young man would visit for tea, in which they took the day off and spent it conversing, or playing chess. The cases were growing harder. At seventeen, the young man had begun to appear paler, more exhausted as weeks ran by. He seemed pleasantly surprised by the assassin’s newfound project, lips splitting into small smiles here and there as he wrapped his hands around tea, and prodding questions when applicable. The project was hardly closed to finished, but the young detective appeared to find relief in the visible improvement of the old man’s health.
As months rolled by, the man slowly realized that despite his pride, and a handful of assistants, this was simply too much work to take on himself. A few thousand dollars would have to do the trick. A team of landscapers were brought, and for a short week, the orphanage was bustling with trucks, greenskeepers rushing to and fro with wheelbarrows, small magnolia and apple trees strategically planted, the foundation for a courtyard laid. He had made sure to incorporate a rose garden, which would be cared for by a groundskeeper, in which every child chose a unique rose from an extensive list, to call their own.
The man would supervise, periodically pointing fingers, or giving instructions according to arrangements made. By the time things had calmed around the establishment mid-May, he allowed himself to settle back and look around him. The stretch of property was almost unrecognizable. Standing by the window, the weight of how much purpose he had fulfilled suddenly overwhelmed his senses. He felt his eyes grow hot, as a few wet streaks fell from weathered cheeks. A handkerchief was quickly pulled from his pocket to remedy the damage. He heard a sound behind him and quickly spun around.
“You asked of me?” The young man quietly watching him from the doorway, his expression suspended in muted curiosity.
“So I did,” The man replied, tucking the handcloth back into place, “Please, come with me. There is something I would like to show you.”
The boy followed him outside, strolling past the courtyard to a raised garden bed, three levels tiered with stone. The soil was completely empty. Wasting no time, the old inventor pulled two sets of gloves and a hand trowel from somewhere on his person, and placed them directly into the younger’s hands. This startled the detective, who only blankly took the material and stared with absurd question.
“Allow me to demonstrate.” The man chuckled, and pulled on gloves of his own, while disappearing behind a shed, only to return pushing a wheelbarrow, burdened with potted vegetation. The young man was still standing there, apearing dumbfounded, as if he were just handed the holy grail, and was unsure of what to do next. The elder knelt beside the lowest tier, from the barrow. He waved for the boy to come closer, as the young detective seemed to finally arrive at his senses, slowly donning his own pair of gloves and stepping forward. The older man pointed to the soil, flicking dirt from his fingers.
“You’ll need to dig at least fifteen inches in.”
The youth nodded blankly, and held the trowel upright like an oversized spoon. Nimble hands that had never known the pains of labor. He stuck the instrument into the soil with finality, shoveling out a small chasm. The man pointed his arm into the hole, to measure the length with his forearm.
“Good, now place this upright, and I’ll fill the rest.” They covered the hole and buried the greenery into the soil. The elder pointed to the boy’s hands, which were awkwardly smashing the dirt downward around the roots, “Make sure to leave air, the roots need to be able to breathe. Loosen that up a little. Good.”
After a few more, the detective gained a bit more confidence, gaining precision and efficiency. They finished after the collection of plants had been exhausted. There was something new about the two working alongside one another. They had always spent time together, surely. Both had always made time to see one another: spend lunch, work in silence, or travel out of country side by side….
But somehow, this was different. They plunged hands into soft crumbling soil, the feeling of fresh earth and tender sprouting roots. This was what life was supposed to feel like. Growth and devotion. The old man felt nothing short of pride as the boy peeled off filthy gloves, and they silently stood to regard their creation. And if the youth had noticed a glint in the man’s eyes, it would just have to do. The elder cleared his throat before speaking.
“This is yours now. I expect you to take as much care as you do in all aspects of your life. Please do not forget.”
He could feel the detective boring holes into the side of his head with what must have been an expression of bewilderment. Trying to make sense of things, he only faced the garden again, faintly nodding.
