17th-Century Pirate 'Corsair' Shipwreck Discovered off Morocco
Wreck-hunters have discovered the remains of a small 17th-century pirate ship, known as a Barbary corsair, in deep water between Spain and Morocco.
The wreck is "the first Algiers corsair found in the Barbary heartland," maritime archaeologist Sean Kingsley, the editor-in-chief of Wreckwatch magazine and a researcher on the find, told Live Science.
The vessel was heavily armed and may have been heading to the Spanish coast to capture and enslave people when it sank, its discoverers said.
But it was carrying a cargo of pots and pans made in the North African city of Algiers, probably so that it could masquerade as a trading vessel.
Florida-based company Odyssey Marine Exploration (OME) located the shipwreck in 2005 during a search for the remains of the 80-gun English warship HMS Sussex, which was lost in the area in 1694.
"As so often happens in searching for a specific shipwreck we found a lot of sites never seen before," Greg Stemm, the founder of OME and the expedition leader, saide in an email.
The 2005 expedition also found the wrecks of ancient Roman and Phoenician ships in the area, Stemm said.
News of the corsair wreck is only being released now, in a new article by Stemm in Wreckwatch, after extensive historical research.
Dread pirates
The Barbary corsair pirates were predominantly Muslims who began operating in the 15th century out of Algiers, which was then part of the Ottoman empire.
Much of the western coastline of North Africa, from modern-day Morocco to Libya, was known as the "Barbary Coast" at the time — a name derived from the Berber people who lived there; and its pirates were a major threat for more than 200 years, preying on ships and conducting slave raids along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts of Europe.
The people captured in the slave raids were held for ransom or sold into the North African slave trade that operated in some Muslim countries until the early 20th century.
But the piratical activities of the Barbary corsairs came to an end in the early 19th century, when the pirates were defeated in the Barbary Wars by the United States, Sweden and the Norman Kingdom of Sicily in southern Italy.
Sunken ship
The corsair wreck lies on the seafloor in the Strait of Gibraltar, at a depth of about 2,700 feet (830 meters).
The ship was about 45 feet (14 m) long, and research indicates it was a tartane — a small ship with triangular lateen sails on two masts that could also be propelled by oars.
Tartanes were used by Barbary pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries, in part because they were often mistaken for fishing vessels, meaning other ships wouldn't suspect pirates were onboard, Kingsley said.
"I've seen tartanes described as 'low-level pirate ships,' which I like,” Kingsley said.
The wreck hunters explored the sunken corsair using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), which revealed the vessel was armed with four large cannons, 10 swivel guns and many muskets for its crew of about 20 pirates.
"The wreck neatly fits the profile of a Barbary corsair in location and character," Kingsley said. "The seas around the Straits of Gibraltar were the pirates' favorite hunting grounds, where a third of all corsair prizes were taken."
Stemm added that the wrecked ship was also equipped with a very rare "spyglass" — an early type of telescope that was revolutionary at the time and had probably been captured from a European ship.
Other artifacts of the wreck support the notion this was a pirate ship laden with stolen goods.
"Throw into the sunken mix a collection of glass liquor bottles made in Belgium or Germany, and tea bowls made in Ottoman Turkey, and the wreck looks highly suspicious," he said. "This was no normal North African coastal trader."

How We Are Saving Wild Florida
Saving our wild Florida is imperative to keeping what we love about the Nature Coast – coastal estuaries, wide open spaces, parks, preserves, farms and ranches – alive and available for us to enjoy now while conserving these lands for our children and grandchildren. As NatureCoaster’s publisher, I am passionate about connecting you with the beauty and energy of our forests, springs, fields and dreams through the written word and images. I hope that this will inspire you to get out and experience the magic of being in nature for yourself. While many of our readers, contributors, and partners work toward this goal, one organization stands out as a leader in the cause: the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation. It all started with a Biologist and a Bear At the onset of the breeding season in May 2010, a two-year-old male Florida black bear known as M34 began his journey from the south-central Florida oak scrub, across swamps, pine forests, and palmetto thickets in search of a mate, amidst central Florida’s development. M34’s nearly 500-mile roundtrip made Joe Guthrie notice. Joe is a wildlife biologist who caught and tagged the young bear in 2009. Joe wondered how wildlife could move through the myriad of roads, fences, and other human development that fragmented the little bear’s environment. Maximus is a baby bear rescued when his mother didn't make it to a wildlife crossing. He will reside at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park for the rest of his life. Image courtesy of Joe Dube. A Conservationist, Photographer, and Filmmaker Joined the Movement In 2012, Joe joined Mallory Lykes-Dimmitt, a conservationist, Carlton Ward, a photographer, and Elam Stoltzfus, a filmmaker for a four-person expedition to experience a 100-day, 1000-mile journey that wildlife would need to traverse to get from the Everglades to Georgia’s Okefenokee swamp. This journey was shared by millions in the film, “The Florida Wildlife Corridor: Everglades to Okeefenokee. Two years later, a second film was made called, “The Forgotten Coast: Return to Wild Florida,” with the same premise of experiencing the challenges of traversing wild lands while skirting human development. This film highlighted Florida’s west coast, including our Nature Coast. The films were shown in parks, at community gatherings, and eventually, they were aired on WTBS, Tampa’s Public television channel, and then nationally on public television. You can watch them on YouTube any time, and the fantastic visuals along with the simple message resonated with audiences. More films were made. Some were under two minutes, some twenty minutes, but all contained the same message, “We have an important mission and you can be a part of it.” The goal of encouraging people to get out and use the corridor became a part of the messaging. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBVREDcGa40 This short film was created to help legislators in Tallahassee understand the importance of a contiguous corridor of natural areas for Florida's wildlife. NatureCoaster was hired to help. NatureCoaster Assists in a Small Florida Wildlife Corridor Film In 2017, I worked with the Florida Wildlife Corridor on a very short film about the tiny black bear population that is isolated in the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. The film was created to help communicate to our legislators about the importance of funding critical linkages to open space. I thought I would be writing and it turned out I was assisting in connecting the organization with local organizations who would be able to help in locations and such. I also manned the table at the film’s screening at the Valerie Theatre in Inverness when a volunteer didn’t show up as expected. It wasn’t a high-paying or glamorous gig, but I learned so much about how groups can work together to influence those who have the power to make change. I learned about how little things influence big decisions, and I learned how our Nature Coast community unites behind a cause. Art is Valuable in Communication A mural was commissioned by the Foundation, created by Kelly Quinn, Art Director and Muralist with Canvas of the Wild at 35 NE 5th Street in Crystal River, that features species native to the local ecosystem, including Florida black bears, roseate spoonbills and, of course, manatees. Image courtesy of the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation. Another reason I believe the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation has made such progress is its recognition of the value of art in communication. A mural campaign has been initiated, with two of those connecting murals in our local communities: Crystal River and Brooksville. “The murals help to connect us with the Corridor,” explains Mallory Lykes-Dimmitt, the Foundation’s CEO. The Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation mural in Brooksville was dedicated in 2023. Image by Diane Bedard. 2021 Brings The Florida Wildlife Corridor Act Several years later, after decades of work from conservationists, scientists, politicians, and many others, the Florida Wildlife Corridor Act was signed into law following unanimous bipartisan support by the Florida legislature on June 29, 2021. This act provided funding for the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation, which held its first summit in September of 2022. Representatives from several land trusts, conservation organizations, the Florida Department of Transportation, legislators, scientists, ranchers, and data scientists gathered to chart a path forward. One of the things that I have really admired about the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation is its attitude that everyone, including businesses, governments, scientists, developers, ranchers and farmers, and community groups want to be part of the solution. This has encouraged large-scale solutions with buy-ins from diverse groups, making a stronger conservation movement. By Working Together, We Can Find Solutions I was invited to the first Florida Wildlife Corridor Summit in Orlando in 2022. At this inaugural event, I rubbed elbows with a diverse group of nature lovers committed to working together to manage Florida’s massive development activity to preserve contiguous green space for our State’s diverse flora and fauna – and humans - to not only survive but thrive. Diverse groups were represented at the first Florida Wildlife Corridor Summit in 2022. Image by Diane Bedard. Multi-generational ranchers, subdivision designers and developers, cinematographers, and artists joined land trust and nature preserve managers, conservationists, biologists, map makers, State legislators, and me. What did we all have in common? A desire to preserve a contiguous tract of 18 million acres of Florida land to provide a safe corridor for our keystone species, like panthers and black bears, and for our lesser known, but just as valuable species like the Florida leafwing butterfly to thrive. It is this organization’s attitude that everyone wants to help that I believe has made them so successful. At times, they seemed to be stepping on other conservation organizations in Florida, but this was not their goal. As of 2019, there were 25 active conservation land trusts, local and regional, in the State of Florida. Each is doing a valuable service by protecting their local lands from development. Still, there is a lot of human development between the conserved lands, which is where wildlife often dies while attempting to move from one protected area to another. https://youtu.be/Ji4O4whuwpY Over time, the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation worked hard to become a unifying organization, championing each land trust’s success vocally, and giving Florida’s conservation movement a place to show what we can do to the whole world! According to the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation, we are a little over halfway there. About the Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation The Florida Wildlife Corridor Foundation partners with organizations and individuals nearly as diverse as the wildlife it aims to protect. By cultivating awareness and action through film, photography, painting, drawing, mapping, storytelling, and expeditions the Florida Corridor Wildlife Foundation works to attain its mission of permanently connecting, protecting, and restoring the 18 million acres that make up this magical and mystical path through Florida. Our State’s long-term economic prosperity and quality of life depend on a healthy and sustainable ecosystem. Using a science-based approach, on-the-ground knowledge of the Corridor, and the support of thousands of followers throughout the state and nation, this organization works to identify and elevate the most pressing threats and opportunities facing the Corridor. I strongly encourage you to get involved. To learn more, visit floridawildlifecorridor.org or follow the organization on Facebook and Instagram. Read the full article

Millions brace for impact as Category 5 Hurricane Milton barrels toward Florida, with evacuation time running out.
Milton regained Category 5 strength Tuesday evening, just a day after becoming one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic basin. It is still expected to be a major hurricane when it reaches Florida's coast.
Millions across Florida are bracing for the potentially catastrophic impact of Hurricane Milton, which threatens to deliver a historically deep and dangerous storm surge along much of Florida's west coast, accompanied by wind gusts exceeding 100 mph in the next 36 hours.
Climate and Average Weather Year Round in 34691 - Holiday FL
Milton regained Category 5 strength Tuesday evening, a day after becoming one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic basin. It is still expected to be a major hurricane when it reaches Florida's coast.
“This is a very serious situation,” the National Hurricane Center warned on Tuesday. “Milton has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central Florida.”
State officials have been working urgently since Monday to evacuate millions from vulnerable coastal areas in what is being called Florida's largest mass evacuation since Hurricane Irma in 2017. Forecasts predict storm surges of 10–15 feet along the central western coast, with devastating waves driven by hurricane-force winds. These levels — far surpassing the damage caused by Hurricane Helene last month — would be the highest seen in over a century in the Tampa Bay region.
“You may think you’ve ‘been through hurricanes before,’” said FOX Weather Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross. “But you didn’t experience the 1921 storm that flooded much of Pinellas County, or the 1848 hurricane that pushed 15 feet of Gulf water where downtown Tampa now stands.”
The Florida National Guard has mobilized 5,000 troops to assist with the storm response, with an additional 3,000 expected to be deployed before landfall. To expedite evacuations, the Florida Department of Transportation has opened the shoulders on Interstate 4 and Interstate 75 for northbound traffic, and tolls have been suspended.
"Before Hurricane Ian hit Southwest Florida, some people were confused, made poor decisions, and tragically lost their lives," warned Bryan Norcross. "Don’t let that happen to you."
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a State of Emergency over the weekend for 51 of the state’s 67 counties, and President Joe Biden approved the state’s pre-landfall emergency declaration on Monday.
Shelters have begun opening, and the state has partnered with Uber to offer free rides to and from shelters for residents seeking refuge from Hurricane Milton. Meanwhile, Atlanta Motor Speedway announced it would open its campgrounds free of charge for evacuees from Florida.
On Tuesday, the first evacuations were ordered on Florida's east coast in St. John's County, including St. Augustine Beach, which is expected to face storm surges from the backside of Milton as it crosses the state.
Devastating winds set to rip through the heart of Florida In addition to the life-threatening storm surge, Hurricane Milton is expected to bring wind speeds exceeding 100 mph near the eyewall as it makes landfall. The Tampa area, in particular, could experience wind gusts of over 95 mph or more at landfall.
Weather Forecast For 35007 - Alabaster AL:
Even after landfall, damaging winds are expected to sweep across the central Florida Peninsula. Hurricane Milton is forecast to retain hurricane strength as it moves along the Atlantic coast, with Hurricane Warnings in place for 11 million people, including the Orlando area and the east coast from the St. Lucie/Martin County line north to Ponte Vedra Beach.
Storm surges are also anticipated along Florida's Atlantic coast, from the Space Coast to the First Coast, affecting cities like Daytona Beach, St. Augustine, and Jacksonville Beach.
Rainfall totals along Milton's path are expected to reach 8-12 inches, with isolated amounts up to 18 inches. The storm also poses a risk of scattered tornadoes, even before landfall.
Schools, airports, and theme parks shut down As Floridians prepare for the storm, widespread closures of schools, businesses, and travel hubs are in effect.
Tampa International Airport (TPA) suspended operations Tuesday morning, while Orlando International Airport (MCO), Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB), Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, and Melbourne Orlando International Airport (MLB) will halt commercial flights starting Wednesday.
Schools and universities across much of the state have canceled classes through at least Thursday. Disney Parks, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld are also closing in anticipation of Hurricane Milton.
The Kennedy Space Center’s visitor complex will remain closed through Thursday.
Race against the clock.
Scars from Hurricane Helene still mark central Florida’s western beaches, just two weeks after the Category 3 storm battered the region with feet of storm surge and hurricane-force winds en route to the Big Bend area.

Sidewalks are lined with piles of debris, remnants of Helene's destruction, now at risk of becoming airborne missiles in Milton’s triple-digit winds or dangerous floating debris amid an even higher storm surge. On Tuesday, an army of dump trucks and bulldozers moved into neighborhoods to clear as much debris as possible, but the task is overwhelming.
“Hundreds of blocks have been decimated,” reported FOX Weather Storm Specialist Mike Seidel from Madeira Beach in Pinellas County, Florida. “They’ve cleared about a block in 45 minutes to an hour, but there are countless more, and time is running out before conditions worsen later Wednesday, certainly by Wednesday night.”
Seidel estimated that it would take another two weeks to clear all the debris. “But we don’t have that luxury,” he warned. “It’s back-to-back storms here in Pinellas County, from Helene to Milton.”
The same situation is unfolding at Bradenton Beach in Manatee County, where streets are strewn with debris and damage from Hurricane Helene, and the area is nearly deserted as the threat from Milton looms.
"This is not our first catastrophe. We have responded to many disasters in the past," Mike Eddins of the Florida State Emergency Response Team told FOX Weather’s Robert Ray. "While we’re accustomed to this, it always takes an emotional toll, especially in a community like this."
youtube
Eddins noted that his team has been on the ground for a week, assisting residents in their recovery from Helene.
"Now, to see these people finally get back on their feet, only to be faced with another setback in the coming days, takes an emotional toll not just on the community, but on my team as well," Eddins said.

Bringing Back Brilliance: Water Damage Restoration in Boca Raton
Boca Raton, nestled along the southeastern coast of Florida, boasts stunning beaches, vibrant communities, and a rich cultural heritage. However, like many coastal regions, Boca Raton is not immune to the challenges posed by water damage. Whether it's from tropical storms, hurricanes, or plumbing mishaps, water intrusion can wreak havoc on homes and businesses. Yet, with effective water damage restoration strategies, residents of Boca Raton can bring back brilliance to their properties and reclaim their spaces from the clutches of water damage.
Understanding the Impact of Water Damage
Water damage can have far-reaching consequences, compromising the structural integrity of buildings, fostering mold growth, and causing irreparable harm to personal belongings. In Boca Raton, where the threat of hurricanes and tropical storms looms large during certain times of the year, residents must grasp the potential ramifications of water intrusion and take proactive measures to address them.
Swift Response and Assessment
Time is of the essence when dealing with water damage. Upon discovering water intrusion, homeowners in Boca Raton must act swiftly to assess the situation, identify the source of water entry, and evaluate the extent of the damage. This initial assessment lays the groundwork for an effective restoration plan and allows homeowners to implement mitigation measures to prevent further deterioration.
Mitigation and Damage Control
Mitigation efforts are crucial in minimizing the impact of water damage. Homeowners should take immediate steps to contain the spread of water, such as shutting off the main water supply and deploying water extraction equipment to remove standing water. By swiftly addressing the issue, homeowners can mitigate damage and prevent secondary issues such as mold growth and structural instability.
Thorough Drying and Dehumidification
Effective drying and dehumidification are essential components of water damage restoration. In Boca Raton's subtropical climate, where humidity levels can soar, thorough drying becomes even more critical to prevent mold proliferation and further damage to the property. Utilizing specialized drying equipment and techniques, homeowners can expedite the drying process and restore the affected areas to their pre-damage condition.
Cleaning and Sanitization
Water damage often leaves behind contaminants and debris that pose health risks to occupants. Proper cleaning and sanitization are paramount to ensure the safety and well-being of residents. Homeowners should employ appropriate cleaning agents and techniques to remove mold, bacteria, and other harmful substances from surfaces, furnishings, and belongings, restoring the property to a clean and sanitary state.
Restoration and Rehabilitation
Once the affected areas are thoroughly dried and cleaned, the restoration process can begin. This may involve repairing damaged structures, replacing compromised materials, and restoring the property to its original condition. Engaging experienced contractors and restoration professionals is essential to ensure the quality and safety of the restoration work and expedite the return to normalcy for homeowners.
Preventive Measures and Preparedness
In addition to addressing immediate damage, homeowners in Boca Raton should also focus on preventive measures to mitigate the risk of future water damage. This may include regular maintenance of plumbing systems, roof inspections, and installation of flood barriers or waterproofing measures. By investing in preventive measures, homeowners can fortify their properties against potential water-related disasters.
Conclusion
Water damage restoration in Boca Raton requires a proactive and multi-faceted approach to mitigate damage, restore properties, and safeguard against future incidents. By understanding the impact of water damage, responding swiftly to incidents, and implementing effective restoration strategies, homeowners can bring back brilliance to their homes and communities. Through a combination of mitigation, thorough drying, cleaning, restoration, and preventive measures, Boca Raton residents can navigate the challenges of water damage with resilience and emerge stronger in the face of adversity.
