Tasked with designing a ‘new neighbourhood local’ within a double-fronted terrace on Melbourne’s iconic Gertrude Street, Bergman & Co. sought to create a unique identity for the hospitality venue, differentiated from its established neighbours. A key tenet in achieving this vision was to create bespoke elements to bring Poodle’s imaginative interior identity to life.

As life partner to Bergman & Co. director Wendy Bergman, Paul Grummisch of Please Please Please became a key collaborator, developing and executing an expansive collection of signature ‘Poodle’ pieces.

Drawing on the much-loved character of Fitzroy and the clients‘ Italian heritage, the design team developed a narrative around authenticity, effortlessness, and nostalgia. References to the classic Italian diner were interwoven with hints at the 20th century Aussie-Italian suburban experience.

Trent Jansen Studio + Johnny Nargoodah, Ngumu Janka Warnti Collection

The Walmajarri phrase ‘Ngumu Jangka Warnti’ meaning ‘whole lot from rubbish’, is the title of a furniture collaboration between Nyikina man and saddler, Johnny Nargoodah, and furniture/object designer, Trent Jansen. 

The collection began with a trip to the local scrap metal yard, in a vague search for anything interesting. Johnny and Trent salvaged a selection of discarded aluminium mesh and used this found metal as the starting point for experimentation. The duo designed these pieces as they made them, starting with a mesh substrate cut vaguely in the shape of a chair, and together beat the material with hammers, concrete blocks and tree stumps until it took on a form that they both liked. This beaten geometry was then softened by laminating New Zealand saddle leather to skin the mesh, masking its geometry and softening its idiosyncratic undulations.

Johnny and Trent created their designs remotely, developing a collaborative ‘sketch exchange’ system to ferry prototype designs between Johnny’s home in Fitzroy Crossing in Western Australia, and Trent’s on the south-east coast of NSW.

Flowers Vasette, Urban Blooms

Flowers Vasette created ‘Arch of Celebration / Arch of Resilience’ for ‘Urban Blooms’ – a project in partnership with the City of Melbourne’s Recovery Fund to celebrate the reopening of Victoria post lockdown in November 2020. 

This project was developed in collaboration between the creative teams at Flowers Vasette with their growers, suppliers, and several other businesses significantly impacted by drought and bushfires, and Covid in the recent years.

Flowers Vasette worked from 11.30pm to 5am over four consecutive nights to create and install this magnificent structure, which features over 1300 stems of natives, foliage and flowers installed on an impressive 18 metre linear archway. Showtech constructed, engineered and installed the impressive scaffold, standing in front of the Flinders Street Station archway. 

The project is the largest architectural floristry activation in the City of Melbourne’s history. 

Mud Australia + APY Art Centre Collective, Mud x APY

2020 marked the beginning of Mud Australia’s partnership with APY Art Centre Collective – a group of 10 Indigenous-owned and governed enterprises that work with a united vision on strategic collaborative projects.

Mud Australia partnered with artists from the collective to produce 30 hand painted Mud ceramics that sold out within 10 minutes.  

This ongoing partnership endeavours to help bring work and industry to the remote communities of the APY lands. 80% of all sales go directly to the artists, with 20% being reinvested into not-for-profit projects handled by the APY Art Centre Collective.

Style Session X Poco Uno

We recently had the pleasure of working with Ash from Poco Uno in our recent Style Session in our Manly Wedding Venue.Ash utilised the beachfront views of our rooftop space to create one incredible setting - one of the best yet! 

In our interview to find out more about the style & about her, this is what we learnt: 

1.       How long have you been in the styling industry? What do you love about it? I’ve been in the design & styling industry since 2012 across both of my businesses Poco Uno & Electric Eyes Homewares. If it’s not styling someones wedding, it’s styling an event, or styling someones home. I try to always include my own designed pieces into each job, so that both businesses get a little moment to shine. 

I’ve always said to myself….”if I can being doing something creative everyday, I’m a happy woman”, and I think this is what I love about being a stylist, it’s creativity 24/7.

2.       Explain your concept for the shoot & where it came from? My concept for the Beachside Dojo X Poco Uno shoot would best be described as ‘Greenery White Out’. I wanted to create a lush & tropical greenery jungle paired back with whiter than white elements, playing on a soft industrial feel that would compliment the stunning decor & style that the Dojo already possesses. I think it was also super important to not forget that the iconic Manly Beach was literally a stone’s throw from the Dojo so all of decor & styling elements were chosen to reflect a laid back approach, yet when styled together, they would create a crisp, clean, concise & sophisticated setting. The concept for the shoot was driven by my passion to try and push the boundaries, and in this case, I wanted to create a shoot for the Dojo that hadn’t been seen before, to give something fresh & completely new. For me, this meant the day was focused around the suspended greenery, the softness of the colour palette and how we merged all elements to feel like they w

3.       Colour palate used & why? I went with a very neutral colour palette so that all of the greenery would really ‘pop’ and be the clear accent colour on the day. White (although technically not a colour) was the reoccurring presence across the board, and this helped to keep everything super clean & crisp. We went with neutral makeup for Ellidy (our model) and all foliage & florals were chosen to reflect the colour palette and to pay homage to the location of Manly Beach. I wanted a relaxed feel but not that something that felt too ‘cliche beachy’. 

4.       Your tips for the ‘to be’ bride when it comes to styling? 100% keep it simple. Really think about what you want your guests to feel as they walk into your Ceremony & Reception. If you can capture that emotion, then it’s very easy to find elements & styles that will reflect this. Although it’s often hard, restraint is my best advise. Write down everything you’re loving from colours, to styles, to florals to table styling, lay it all out together and then stand back and really think….”ok what do we need and why”. Less is always better and I find honing in on one aspect, whether it’s a floral choice or furniture colour, and going ‘en mass’ with that one element, you can then have this across the board as your base, and from there after you add in the little pops of the other elements, you’ll get a very cohesive design & style and you won’t complicate your guests…and yourself!

5.       Predictions on what we’ll see over the next year in terms of wedding styling? I think there’s definitely a push towards that more ‘art direction’ vibe, which is somewhat quirky & left of centre either through the colour palette or choice of florals & greenery. I’m seeing clients really push for those non-traditional bouquets, one-of-a-kind venue, and lots of custom pieces from stationary, to menu’s, to wedding favours. Weddings are more than just events these days, they’ve become mini festivals!
