2019 Seniors

Ksenia Klimenko - VT UB BB FX I think everyone knows Klimenko by now. She's a gorgeous gymnast, especially great on UB/BB, and actually seems to have some mental toughness. :O (But then, we thought the same about Melka.) Ksenia gives me the same "baby Aliya" vibes that Eremina did as a young junior, so I hope she can stay healthy and follow in their footsteps. :) Expect to see her at Jesolo, Junior Europeans, and the Youth Olympic Games next year.

Anastasia Agafonova - UB BB FX Agaf. Beautiful, beautiful gymnast - very similar to Komova - but already constantly broken. She has the same coaches as Sokova, so I think we all know how this is gonna end. But she has some impressive skills: inbars and piked jaeger on bars, side aerial+loso on beam, and full-in on floor. Great turns too. (Sorry about the shitty UB/BB videos - there are HD ones on FloPro if you have that.)

Daria Belousova - VT UB BB FX Belou is a nice little gymnast! She’s best on bars and beam, but shows AA potential as well, although she’s only competed UB/BB recently. I think she could end up a bit like Kapitonova; rapidly improving over the next couple years and contending for major teams. Slow and steady. 

2020 Seniors

Olga Astafyeva - VT UB BB FX Asta! I've loved this kid since she was 10 years old. She's got some great skills for her age - van Leeuwen, LOSO beam mount, full-in on FX, and she's training a DTY. You might notice her knees taped up; her coach said it's Osgood-Schlatter, so hopefully she'll grow out of it? Anyway, I like her because her style is like a Russian-American blend. In a good way. Pray for her.

Vladislava Urazova - VT BB FX Vlada! I remember liking her beam at 2014 Olympic Hopes, but she kinda dropped off the radar after that.. Anyway, we finally got to see her routines this summer, and it turns out she's fantastic! She's not the most expressive gymnast around, but she's insanely talented. Great FTY (competed a 1.5 once), LOSO mount and bhs+bhs+layout on beam, triple full and front double full on floor. She's also a lean mean spinning machine.There's no video of her bars, but she's weak there judging by scores. (NBD, it's not like Russia lacks barworkers.) Definitely going to Euros next year if she stays healthy.

Elena Gerasimova - VT UB BB FX Baby beam queen. Seriously: Onodi mount, FHS+front tuck, side aerial+loso. Her floor is great as well; she has a ripe-for-upgrade 2.5+punch front and recently debuted a full-in. Vault and bars are fine for her age, and should improve when she grows a bit. Overall, she's just lovely to watch. Your typical Russian junior heartbreaker. 

Irina Komnova - VT UB BB FX Irina is coached by Marina Nazarova, aka the coach of Afanasyeva and Semenova, aka that coach you see on the sidelines at every meet.  What stands out about Ira are her spins. And, well, that's about it. She's not BAD on any events, but she's not great anywhere either. She does have inbars, a bhs+bhs+layout on beam, and a full-in on floor - so the foundation is there for her to become a solid AAer - she's just not there yet.

Yana Vorona - VT UB BB FX Yana also has a big-name coach: Gennady Yelfimov. (Komova's coach, for those not familiar.) I have to say, she's made huge improvements since he started training her. Her best event is FX, where she has a great double arabian and whip+double tuck. Her beam is also great, she has a solid FTY, and bars... well. :’)  But again, improving under Yelfimov!! She's probably the "least best" of these girls, but she actually only made Tokyo eligibility by about 72 hours (born Dec 28, 2004). I almost hope they look beyond 2020 and into next quad. Either way, still a great gymnast with an almost Ukrainian style. 

Arina Strukova - UB BB FX Strukova's not your typical Russian gymnast. She's very stocky and powerful, like Produnova. Her best event is beam, where she shows a ro+layout and side aerial+back tuck. She had a great bar routine at age 10, but hasn't really upgraded since, so we'll have to see how that event pans out for her. Floor is fine, cute choreo, and she has a decent FTY. (I'd link the video but it's on FloPro. :)) Anyway, I really like her and hope to see her get some assignments next year.

2021 Seniors (I can’t believe these kids are gonna be “real juniors” next year.)

Viktoria Listunova - VT UB BB FX Listy is probably the most artistic junior since Bondareva. Floor is her best event, with great-but-simple tumbling (tho her bhs are a little sketchy), and an awesome Mustafina turn. Her beam is good too, with a lovely press handstand mount. VT and UB are fine for her age. Just watch her routines and you'll become obsessed too! I'm hoping she goes to WOGA Classic or Gymnix next year.

Nelli Audi - VT UB BB FX Nelli is your standard skill-chucking Russian junior. A triple full at age 10? Why the hell not. I'm honestly impressed she's still alive at this point. But she has started cleaning up! Beam is her standout event; she's been attemping a LOSO mount+BHS+LOSO series and a side+aerial back tuck. She also debuted a Mustafina turn+double turn on FX at Voronin Cup, because again, why not. I hope to see her at Round Lake a lot next year so she can focus more on polishing skills and less on trying to kill herself.

Maria Minaeva - VT UB BB FX Minaeva's a really strong AAer, and if I had to bet on one of these kids surviving the quad, it would be her - mainly because she's already doing difficult skills well, and doesn't have that "breakable waif" body type. Beam and floor are her strongest events. On beam, she shows a side aerial+loso, fhs+front tuck, and fantastic leaps. On floor, she tumbles a full-in and 2.5+front tuck. Vault is a solid tsuk full (4.8 SV), and bars - while definitely her weakest event - are still crazy good for a 12-year-old. Like she would def be the #2 senior in Romania. Anyway!! Hopefully we see her at Gymnix or WOGA Classic next year too.

So if you haven’t subscribed to FloSlam yet, you, uh, may be in for a surprise: As Brandon Howard reported tonight, the cost for new subscribers at the monthly rate has gone from $20 to $30. The yearly subscription cost of $150, which works out to $12.50 per month, remains unchanged (this is what I have, and it’s a good deal on the whole). If you’ve already been paying $20 a month for some reason instead of going for the yearly rate, your rate won’t go up.

A couple of thoughts: 

One, this seems related to FloSports’ decision to eliminate subscriptions to individual channels (or “verticals”) on their network: the new $30 subscribes you to FloPro, so you can watch, like, rodeo and college cheerleading and other things that used to be on ESPN back when ESPN couldn’t afford popular sports. The old $20 rate only got you FloSlam. 

Two, this also seems like a gambit to either keep the $20-a-month customers from letting their subscriptions lapse, or to push more people to the yearly subscription, or both. It’s had to imagine they think they’re going to get a lot of new subscribers at a rate for which you can get the WWE Network, the Highspots Network, and NJPW World. 

It’s hard to say whether this is a good sign or a bad sign for the FloSlam experiment. My hunch is that there’s a limited number of people willing to pay for a service like this, especially with so much competition, partly because of pirating, and partly because there just aren’t that many hardcore indie wrestling fans. But this was the most ambitious service to launch so far, because of the promise of live shows; if it fails, it’s hard to see a replacement emerging from the indie world.
