Basketball Emperor Jordan Charlotte Hornets resigns
Basketball Emperor Jordan Charlotte Hornets resigns as owner of the club, ending 13 years in power
Michael Jordan (60), the "King of Basketball," will come down from his position as the owner of the Charlotte Hornets of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Major U.S. media, including ESPN, reported on the 24th (Korea Standard Time) that "the NBA board approved the sale of the Charlotte Hornets club," adding, "Jordan's 13-year club operation has ended."
According to sources, the NBA's board of directors, consisting of 30 team owners, passed the vote with 29 in favor and 1 in opposition. The only person to vote against was New York Knicks owner James Dolan.
As a result, the sale of the Charlotte club, which is valued at approximately $3 billion (about 3.86 trillion won), is expected to take place in the next one to two weeks. Rick Schnal and Gabe Plotkin, the new owners of the Charlotte club, were minority shareholders of the Atlanta Hawks and Charlotte clubs, respectively, but the acquisition deal earned them major shareholder status to lead the club. Schnal is the co-CEO of a private equity firm in New York and floatkin is the founder of Melvin Capital, an American hedge fund company.
Jordan, who was the best basketball player with six wins and five MVPs in his career, purchased part of Charlotte Bobkets, the predecessor of the Charlotte Hornets, in June 2006 and became a co-owner of Charlotte. Since then, he has acquired an additional stake for $275 million (about 353.8 billion won) in 2010, making him the largest shareholder.
Jordan was the first former player in NBA history to be the owner. In addition, Jordan became the only black owner in the NBA. At the time, Jordan said, "I achieved my life goal of becoming an NBA owner after retirement," adding, "I'm very happy to have a chance to make the best team in my hometown of North Carolina."
However, for 13 seasons after Jordan became the owner, the Charlotte club had the worst time. He made only two playoff appearances. He has not made the playoffs for the past seven consecutive seasons. In the 2022-23 season, most of the main players suffered from injuries, with a 27-55 winning rate of .329. Among the total 30 teams, the winning rate was the fourth from the bottom.
Jordan was actively involved in the selection and trade of the club's rookies as the owner. However, he was under fire for misjudging and making choices every time. In June last year, sports critic Skip Bayless criticized Jordan as "the worst owner in NBA franchise history."
Jordan is expected to remain a minority shareholder in Charlotte's club as an official owner 농구토토
