why does a story have to be true? is it not enough for it to give me indescribable power and authority over my peers

something i adore about Flint's character is his love for classic books. because like, when he's thinking of talking to his men, his frame of reference isn't the easy personable comradery that grows on people naturally (like Gates, Billy, Silver). he was an outcast in the navy! a poor upstart nerd! a whipsmart career man!

what he does know is the grandeur of the classics. he knows how to speak to Men, how to channel the rage of a collective moment. he knows the romantic swell of a great narrative. when he stands before then, he speaks as a part of that swell. when he stood with Thomas, they spoke in that swell together. Their romance was as much to themselves as to the inherent humanity of people they hadn't even met

And just as the Greatest of Men in the novels don't do things by halves, neither did James McGraw, neither does Flint.

but a man does things by halves. a man will chat and bend their morals and earn trust and friendship by the way they float through others' rules and orders. a man will sully himself and his own narrative and it will be messy

And Flint, James, doesn't think of himself as one of them

this is made all the clearer when Flint says something awkward, something stupid. Because he isn't talking like he's a person. he's talking like he's a Hero, a Villain. he's talking to prop up a greater narrative. and when a man or a woman he's interacting with doesn't see The Narrative he's driving, he can look utterly ridiculous

Flint is embroiled in A Grand, Classic, Romantic Narrative the common man doesn't see

and the writers of Black Sails carefully unfold it to us, the audience

i do think it’s interesting re: silverflint every time one of them notices their dynamic shift in some way in season two they will go for the throat and try to cut the other one down at the very core of their being. like flint asking silver what the crew thinks of him when he regains captaincy, the first time he ever has really shown any respect or trust for silver’s judgment. silver’s first instinct is to mock him for being such a terrible person whose done so many bad things while simultaneously extremely sensitive about how people perceive him. meanwhile, when silver is trying to convince flint the gold’s missing and tells him he has second thoughts about their partnership and his place on the crew, flint’s first instinct is go for a similarly deep insult, telling him “where else would you wake up in the morning and matter?” yeowch! and both the things they comment on are things they find the most disturbing about the other: silver finds flint to be a hypocrite and liar but more importantly hates how he genuinely cares enough about morals to allow it to weaken him when he does wrong by his own standards. and flint finds silver’s “self-preservation” and obvious two-facedness as a coward’s excuse for having no real identity.

ouuuggghhh thinking abt my extremely fragmented OC story where Flint and Blaze (right) serve as foils for Bruno and Brutus (left) and Flint & Blaze exemplify the pain of not being able to make up/apologize for past actions. But because they were chosen to be revived from the dead for a second chance at life by pure luck (because they died young), they were able to mend their relationship as brothers but not their other family members or friends that they've wronged. And they would influence Bruno and Brutus to try to reconcile and mend their strained relationship.

at this point im saltier about Black Sails fans being repeatedly being called assholes but ofmd fans Not being called out for probably the same behavior or worse? and with what feels like very little. evidence? god damn

cant even be happy about flints ending like i was in 2017 bc this rewatch only solidified for me that he'd moved PAST thomas... not to say that he didn't still love him bc of course he did but his interest in the war wasn't (solely) fueled by his rage/grief any longer and his friendship/respect for madi and the maroons had helped him find him hope again he was interested in BUILDING something and i can't believe that it was such a relief for him to cast off flint and become mcgraw again at that point in his story! but like what am i gonna do, hate silver? he doomed himself just as he destroyed madi and flint and their shared cause! insane making tv like what do i do with this.......
