Flare Signal (by @queenangst/achievingelysium on AO3) Fic Binding Update #6
I LIVE AGAIN
For most people, one bind does not take this long. However I am a) a beginner and b) the physical embodiment of ADHD (so motivation is a lil hard to come by) (my poor friend has been waiting on her birthday gift for over a month now) (but it's fine)
Tumblr media
Edge trimming did take ages as I predicted last time but it's DONE and it looks pretty decent considering I did it by hand with a wood chisel and a homemade press. Also finished reinforcing the spine & added headbands and bookmark!
Tumblr media
AND I made the case today! First time using the foil quill pen I bought months ago (thanks to the good folks in the @renegadeguild discord server for the recommendation!) I kept the cover design very simple and didn't do anything on the spine or back, mostly because I didn't quite know how the pen worked yet and this was my last bit of red bookcloth so I was Very Scared of Messing Up
The phoenix design definitely isn't as perfect as it would be if I used a cricut, but for hand-drawn I think it looks p good so I'm happy with it
Tumblr media
Making sure the case fits, not glued in yet (that's a job for tomorrow)

Hey! Wanted to reach out and ask, do you have a policy for people making nonprofit bindings of your fics? I've been getting into bookbinding lately and am hoping to make a hardcover of Flare Signal for a friend's birthday (it's her favorite fic of all time) but wanted to ask your permission first. Thanks :D
I don't have any policies about bookbinding - no one's ever asked me before! But I got the notification for your ask and that is SO cool and exciting !!!!!! I'm honored!
As long as it's not for profit and just a gift to your friend A THOUSAND TIMES YES
My only condition is if you decide to go through with it to please send me pictures!!
And I love craft and bookbinding and the process - this is only a suggestion, but personally I'd love to see your process and what you do with it! Fan bookbinding is super cool and I love seeing people post about it - if you're willing to share, I know there are plenty other fans who'd enjoy seeing it too! <3
(Also I don't. know. if this is weird or if she'd want it but I'd be happy to write a happy birthday message for your friend or something if you think that would be cool!)
I look forward to seeing what you make!

I'm not crying (yes I am)
I admire Kunikida so much because he refuses to give up even after everything he's gone through. Not just the Decay of Angels and Vampire arcs, but throughout the story. He's had his ideals challenged over and over again and even had them taunted, and despite that, he completely refuses to give up and it really shows here.
Man needs the biggest, longest break he can get. THEY ALL DO.

I'll ask! Would Cerojin get divorced? They are both very stubborn people. I can see them trying to work it out somehow (even if only for Kanako's sake).
I love how people are starting to see me as the Cerojin divorce guy, lol
For the most part, I see Ceroba's and Chujin's relationship going out in such a spectacular fashion that there's no way for them to try to salvage it. I'm talking "months/years of poor communication and the stresses of life and having to provide for the family practically singlehandedly" putting cracks in the dam that is Ceroba's idolization of Chujin that holds back anything... unsavory that she might feel about him. And then, one day, the dam breaks and Ceroba goes from "Chujin is so wonderful and perfect" to "Chujin is awful. He's done nothing but bum around while I've had to do everything for the family!!! I hate him!!!" And then their relationship goes out in a full-on "flinging magic and words you can't take back (and maybe a chair)" messy explosion. (Okay, well, it wouldn't be immediate, there would be signs that Ceroba's getting frustrated with him, but she's too busy trying to bury/ignore those feelings, so you'd only really see her temper flare up occasionally before she tries to steady herself by saying "My husband is a wonderful person, I'm doing what I can to help him. I shouldn't be acting like this" and Chujin's too busy focusing on what he wants to do that he's not paying attention to how his wife feels. They CANNOT communicate properly for the life of them :'). The relationship still peters out pretty quickly once Ceroba stops feeling the love, though.)
Buuuuuut, let's say that they're able to communicate well enough that they can tell each other "We NEED to make this work. We can't get a divorce. We can't have our marriage fail." Well... It would be a nightmare. To say the least. They'd both only try to force the relationship and make it work for their own egos without any of the groundwork that makes a relationship work, so at best it'd be a public performance of what a happy couple should look like instead of what it would be like. A happy and healthy marriage needs more than just love to work. It needs trust. It needs shared responsibilities. It needs proper communication. And these are areas where Ceroba and Chujin fail each other. Sure, maybe they might be able to act like they tolerate each other when they're out in public (i.e. not yelling at each other, though there's still some weird tension between them that some people would be aware of). But behind closed doors, I can't see this facade holding up well. Conversations would be so insanely passive-aggressive, that you'd have to call them "passive-aggressive-aggressive." They would probably develop a routine like this every day:
Ceroba: "You're home late. How was work?" (<- Said with a smile tight enough that she could put teeth marks into steel)
Chujin: "Fine." (<- Chujin got his ear chewed off about not contributing financially around the house so he got the first job that he could to prove her wrong. He hates it and his negative feelings about his job rebound onto Ceroba because he feels like she forced him into it.)
Ceroba: "Oh, that's wonderful to hear! Well, dinner's on the table for you. Kanako and I already ate, so you'll have to have it alone."
Chujin: "... It's cold."
Ceroba: "Oh, well. That's what happens when you stay late at work without telling me. Microwave's in the kitchen, you can handle it yourself." (<- she is already thinking about the bottle)
And on and on and on. They'd be the sorts of people that everybody else around them wants them to get divorced because they're sick of all the arguing and stress and anger. Starlo in this situation, brave man that he is, tries to recommend that Ceroba gets a divorce and ends up getting yelled at because "How dare you suggest that we can't make things work!!" Martlet doesn't seem as privy to Chujin's home life as Starlo is with Ceroba, so all she knows is that things are rough at home, but she tries to invite him out bowling or to relax in Honeydew's hot spring to get some of the stress out. Both of them are trying their best to help their friends, but this isn't something that they can handle because their friends are just.... astronomically stubborn and stupid.
(And this isn't even getting into how a monster's health is heavily tied to their emotional state. A monster can literally be put into a near-death state from grieving too hard. Can you imagine how rough things would be with all that stress? Humans already experience a myriad of health problems when put under stress for an extended period of time, so you can just imagine how bad things would be healthwise for a monster. Food for thought...)
And as for Kanako? Oh my god. Out of everybody in this situation, she is the one I sympathize with/pity the most. Ceroba and Chujin have a choice in their relationship and how it's going/turns out, but Kanako doesn't. She's just a kid. Like I said earlier, on paper they might say that they're trying to make this marriage work, perhaps "for Kanako's sake," but that's their egos speaking because if they were actually paying attention to what their daughter wants, they'd realize that she'd be happier if they weren't fighting all the time, even if that means a divorce. I can see her feeling responsible for how terribly things are going because they keep saying "We're trying to stay together for your sake." Maybe she tries intervening in arguments to stop Mommy and Daddy from fighting each other, but over time gets burnt out on doing that because she's not stopping them from fighting, she's only delaying the inevitable. Most likely, she'd avoid being at home/around her parents as much as possible because there's so much tension at home and she never knows when tempers are gonna flare, so it's better to sleep over at friends or spend the day at the Wild East/the Sunnyside farm/at the playground/Cafe Dune/somewhere else. Over time, her parents' constant quarreling could even burn her out/make her jaded and irritated with her mom and dad as well as depressed because she feels like it's her fault they're like that. She never asked for her mom and dad to try to maintain their relationship for her sake; she just wants to be happy, whatever shape that happiness may take.
Tl;dr Divorce is a mercy in this situation.

thinking about thomas lynch's "we get no choice. if we love, we grieve." and sister warrior after sister warrior finding a family in the ocs and being left indelibly inked by their time with their sisters and then falling away one by one by one, pawns sacrificed in a greater game, sister after sister after sister chewed up and spat out and left in the dust. warriors carrying their sisters and then carrying their memories and bending beneath the weight of all these ghosts. buoyed only by those who still stand beside them, who reach a hand out to raise them up, who will fall in a day or a week or a month but in that moment they're there with a forearm to grasp and a hand to hold and a shoulder to cry on, the tightness of bonds formed in those intimate isolated spaces.
love like a campfire, embers smoldering long after the flames have died off, and sitting by waiting and praying for them to burn out so you can finally, finally rest. beatrice with a chest full of embers from fires that had warmed her for so long, clinging to that last measure of comfort, the lingering heat of that love, in the wake of the ark

Signal Flares
Even if this invention goes back to a man, we have a woman to thank for the fact that they are used at all. Pyrotchnic flares were invented by Benjamin Franklin Coston, but he died before he could give them to the US Navy. His wife Martha Jane Coston (born 1826) eloped with him at the age of 16 and married him early. Benjamin quickly became a naval scientist for the U.S. Navy's scientific laboratory in Washington, D.C. At the Washington Navy Yard, he developed a signaling rocket and a percussion primer for cannons. Due to a disagreement with the Navy, he left that post in 1847 and joined a gas company, but had long been battling health problems from the chemicals he had been working with. This led to his death in November 1848.
Tumblr media
Martha Jane Coston (1826-1904) (x)
It was Martha who attended to his affairs and found a note on the subject of night signals. However, it was only a note and not elaborated and so she did for the next 10 years. With limited knowledge of chemistry and pyrotechnics, she relied on the advice of hired chemists and fireworks experts - with mixed results. Her breakthrough came in 1858 when she watched the fireworks in New York City to celebrate the completion of the transatlantic telegraph cable. She realised that her system needed a light blue flare in addition to the red and white signal flares she had already developed. She formed the Coston Manufacturing Company to produce the signal flares and entered into a business relationship with a pyrotechnic developer to procure the necessary blue colour.
Tumblr media
(x)
On 5 April 1859, she was awarded US Patent No. 23,536 and sold this for $20000 for a pyrotechnic night signal and code system. Using different colour combinations, ships could communicate with each other and with the coast. But the patent was granted to her as executor of the estate of her late husband, who is named as the inventor. Captain C.S. McCauley of the U.S. Navy recommended the use of their beacons to Secretary of the Navy Isaac Toucey in 1859. After extensive tests that proved the effectiveness of the system, the U.S. Navy ordered an initial set of 300 flares and later placed an order for $6,000 worth of flares. However, she then secured the patent in Europe.

(x)
In 1871, however, she introduced her own system of different colours and patterns, which allowed ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore communication and sold the signals to navies, ship owners and yachts around the world.
Eventually, in the USA, every United States Life-Saving Service station was equipped with Coston flares, which were used to signal ships, warn of dangerous coastal conditions and call surfers and other rescuers to a wreck. Many accounts of shipwrecks and rescues describe the use of the Coston flare, which helped save thousands of lives. Although Martha Coston died in 1904, her company, later renamed the Coston Signal Company and Coston Supply Company, continued until at least 1985.
These flares are still used today:
White flares are used to warn other ships of a boat’s position in order to avoid collisions. They are also useful for illuminating the water by night if there is a man overboard.
Orange distress flares are designed to be used for distress calls in daylight as they are easier to see than red flares due to the substantial clouds of orange smoke that are produced.
Red distress flares are used only in an emergency that requires immediate assistance. Because of their meaning, it is illegal to fire or ignite a red flare either on the water or along the coast in order to prevent calling out emergency services for lesser reasons. Red distress flares are used mainly at night because they are easier to see in darkness.

Casing in is my least favorite part of the process, it feels like there's so much that could go wrong and ruin the entire project with every step ;-; Thankfully, all went well this time around, no major issues aside from getting a lot of glue on my hands lol
AND IT'S DONE NOW. I CAN HOLD IT IN MY HANDS. IT'S VERY HEAVY AND ALSO VERY COOL
Gonna send it in the mail to friend ASAP, I'm so excited to get her reaction ehehe

BUT NOBODY CAME…
***
Really feels like I'm shouting into the darkness, looking for commissions so I can get enough money to afford to live. Starting to feel really pointless now.
Been watching The Terror series while making this, snow seemed fitting. This truly is the dark night of my soul.
Please, if you can, I need commissions. Digital, traditional, animated, I'm open to all mediums and fandoms. I have a Ko-Fi open with some options, though I'm willing to create more options for special requests. I will also make a second equal or lesser costing piece for free.
I currently am late with my rent, I need $450 in order to pay it.
Use the link below to get to my Ko-Fi, or DM me here.

Hi, you said in your bio that you're chronically ill. I was wondering if you had any tips for knitting with chronic pain (assuming that's your flavour of chronic illness)? Or do you know anyone who could give me advice?knitting/sewing is my sanity-saver.
I use compression gloves, only knit with specific weights of yarn (the ones that are the least painful for me), and try to take frequent breaks, which for me looks like switching hobbies every 30 minutes or so (knitting to spinning to knitting, etc). I also do my best to be very gentle on my joints when i can, altho i honestly rarely have the choice at work.
Personally i have joint problems and migraines, so thats what im correcting for/trying not to make worse. Helpful advice probably varies depending on what youre trying to correct for. Really my only general advice is "when it starts to hurt, try to stop" and "if possible, save the painfully difficult stuff for when youre doing well, and make the easier stuff your usual work"
If anyone who sees this has got other tips please feel free to comment them
