Totally Inappropriate Tag

What is a skill you wish you had, but don’t? Do you plan on learning this skill?

I feel a lot of shame and guilt over not being able to speak Spanish. I have taken over 7 years of lessons and I still cannot communicate or understand Spanish to any degree. It one of a thousand reasons I don’t feel I’m Mexican (enough) and lots of guilt. But right now I’m trying to work through the guilt before I work through the language.

Which part of the body is the most unattractive in your opinion? (Let’s be adults about this).

I got to agree with Sam here, feet are gross. I do not like them, Sam-I-am.

What is something which isn’t “supposed” to be funny that you find absolutely hilarious?

I love bullying my dog. I never hurt him or do anything dangerous, I just enjoy teasing him. I’ll grab a paw when he’s hanging out and not give it back. Or I’ll get my face in his face. But the biggest thing I do is take off his collar. My dog, for whatever reason, hates having his collar off. The best we can assume, it’s because you don’t wear collars in the pound (or when he’s getting groomed) so he associates not having a collar with living in the pound. (He spent most of his first year and a half in a pound.) He gets very antsy and will paw at the collar until we put it back on him. I find it funny. I’m mean.

Also I have to remind myself that a lot of people find my suicidal humor uncomfortable. They’re probably not used to the idea that dying in the next six months sound grand.

Summery

After the events of the first book, Vere Abbey must collect her allies if she has any hope of saving her family from the Knights who are determined to rid Quincy, Oregon of any and all magic users. But with new arrivals on both sides and a funeral to plan, Vere isn’t sure she can take her next breath. Will she be able to use her best talents—magic and nerve—to win the day? Or will the next funeral be her own?

#1 Which character would get wasted at a holiday party and end up humping the Christmas tree?

Probably Thread, if someone dared her to do it. Thread has thin skin and is willing to do anything to one up anyone else. She’ll be the BEST person to hump this Christmas Tree, you hear?

#2 Which character deserves to get the crap beaten out of ‘em by the Krampus?

Vere would say herself but honestly Ray, her dad, deserves it. He keeps so many secrets and it hurts so many people. Learn how to talk Ray, it will save everyone a LOT of problems.

#3 Which character is the Grinch this year?

Fauna most likely. Especially considering the funeral. She will feel especially alone and unconnected with the world and having a holiday about family and togetherness will not help. She’d rather work her way through it than deal with her own emotions.

#4 Which character would try to get a little too friendly while sitting on Santa’s lap?

Eloise - not her fault, her magic makes people being attracted to her feel like an expensive spa mixed with great food. If Santa found her attractive, she’s going to push that envelope. It’s not her fault she’s beautiful. *hair flip*

#5 Who would your antagonist most like to tongue beneath the mistletoe?

I have several antagonists, but the main one Ezra would probably really like to meet Jael under the mistletoe. He’s lonely and Jael is the epitome of what he’s spent his life admiring. She’s strong, beautiful, single and within his age range. He’s not in love, but he definitely has a crush.

#6 Which character would accidentally tip the menorah and light the house on fire?

Vere, honestly. She’d be lighting candles with her magic, get distracted and knock it over. Radick, her love interest, would probably be the one to put it out.

#7 Which character is most likely to bring magic brownies to a holiday party?

Let’s say it all together, WENDY. My girl with plant magic might not grow her own pot today, but with it becoming legal I would not be surprised if she learned to put a lot of love into those relaxing plants. Also, they’d be literally magic with her magic in the pot.

#8 Which character is most likely to ring in the new year naked? And why the hell are they naked in the first place?

Okay, so apparently Vere gets hot when she gets high? Why did you even bring those, Wendy? And apparently she forgets people are in the house? And apparently, maybe, she had a wild idea to seduce Radick? Or not? Because she’s currently chatting up Wendy about the brownies and how to grow pot and she’s naked and good lord, someone get her some clothes.

#9 Which character is absolutely kidding themselves by insisting they belong on the nice list?

Eloise has done nothing wrong in her life. Thread knows that and loves her.

But really, Eloise may or may not know she belongs on the naughty list but she’d make the argument regardless. Everything she’s done, she’s done in the name of protecting herself. She grew up in a bad place and knew once puberty hit, her magic would turn her own body against her. She’d be getting creepy looks at 11 and start being touched by 13. If she’s had to use that against people, isn’t it deserved? If she had to use anything to protect herself, isn’t that her right? She’s never hurt anyone.

Who didn’t deserve it.

#10 Which characters would readers be most shocked to find on the naughty list?

The readers? In book 2? Probably Radick. In book one he had some internalized magic user hate but by book 2 he’s a staunch defender and spends the entire book just putting everything he can into supporting Vere, her family and her goals. But the dude has jealousy problems, he’s quick to judge and his morality can be a little self-centered. He wants to be a good guy and protect good people but he’s spent his life being taught that killing is how you do that. He still defaults to it.

Asagao Academy Tag

I got tagged by @qeeko and also I think my tags aren’t working or something because this is the second tag I saw wasn’t actually linked. Weird.

Favorite NB Character: Character would probably be Shane. I have a weakness for the grumpy jerks who just need someone to thaw their heart. His route was difficult and worth it. My favorite route, and second fave character, would be ProJared because I am also fucking weak for relationships that require a story to be together and stepford smilers. But I just like Shane more. He reminds me of Fenris, so....

Least Favorite NB Character: Paul probably? I like him fine, but I’m not a fan of Continue anyway, his route is a romance story I personally don’t like and I found him the least attractive in the route. I’d actually rather date Josh. He was so cute in the route and I liked him a lot. 

Favorite HB Member: Jimmy! Jimmy is my favorite HB member on youtube and his sprite was so cute and I love all the times he’d pop up and he was just a sweetheart the entire time. Though shout out to Caddy for probably being my favorite scenes. I loved his scene in Paul’s route. It made me laugh and it was followed by a moment that actually worked for me romantically with Paul, so kudos!

Least Favorite HB Member: Sorry Wallid. I did Jirard’s route first and met him as the villain. I’d never heard of him before so, yeah.

Who Would I Date: Oh that’s hard. I’m rarely attracted to people in fiction that I’d would actually want to date. I’m also trying to think about who I was in high school and all that. In high school I’d date the person who’d ask me out because I did nothing to move forward. But in high school I’d also be the person to not attract, say, Jared. I might date Shane, if me and him were buds first. I liked being someone special to someone who didn’t get along with people. I’d date PBG if we were childhood friends because that works for me. Or Jirard because he’s a sweetie who actually asks you out. Actually, thinking of my high school self, definitely Jirard. He’d ask me out (if interested) and he’s sweet and big and cuddly. Like me.

11 Flamey Facts

1. I just drove 3,200 miles across the country in 5 days.

2. I have been dating my current boyfriend for the past five years and known him for the past 13~ years.

3. I wrote my first novel when I was 19 because of a nasty break up. It took me under a month.

4. I have written 7 novels or 13 novels depending on how much you want to count complete rewrites as new books. 

5. My current book I have rewritten from scratch 4 times. First time it was an adult romance novel with too much plot. Second time it was a YA novel in third person. Third time it was a YA novel in contrasting first person present POVs with occasional third person interludes and then this time where it’s in third person past but also has a brand new main character. (Not completely new, but basically.)

6. For my last rewrite, I read Catholicism for Dummies cover to cover and now I have Views(tm) on Catholicism. Or at least the priest that wrote that book. Hoo boy.

7. I have not written a new idea in 7 years. This scares me.

8. I recently taught myself how to crochet.

9. I now have 4 containers to hold all the yarn I have for crocheting.

10. I hate being wrong so much that I will be more likely to stand up for someone when I’m upset with them because I don’t want anyone telling me that I don’t see their side. I do. They’re just wrong.

1. What one quality would you say all your favorite characters share?

Stepford smilers. People who put on a happy face to hide pain. It’s a quality I lack completely and love seeing in fiction. One it’s a great way to create drama without making anyone assholes and two, it’s such an easy way to create depth of character. I almost can’t make any character who isn’t smiling to hide pain.

2. Your OTP goes to Ikea. Which one is the person who brings the exact model name and knows where precisely in the store to go? Which is the one who gets immediately overwhelmed and ��accidentally” leaves the other behind to go eat horse meatballs?

Fenris would have a list and map it out because he gets anxious without control, but he’d follow Hawke to get meatballs and waste the day because he goes where Hawke goes. They get what they need eventually but most likely after making out in an abandoned row and calling Varric.

3. What phone does your mc have?

Vere Abbey would have a cheaper brand android. Nothing BAD just not top of the line. She isn’t very interested in having a phone.

4. Is there a scenario you swore you’d never write that you ended up doing anyway? What is it?

Write in first person. When I started writing, I read a lot of YA during the Twilight craze so everything was first person and I was sick of it. I hated first person and would put a book down instantly for having it. Then a few of my books were too chatty for third and then I wrote strictly in first person for about three years (which I also hated). I’m now back to third and happier here but also learned the power of first.

5. As soon as you start writing anything, you’ll run across something that’s already been written which has (what seems like) the exact same concept. Name one that you found that seemed a little too close to your own idea–before you realized that of course it doesn’t have to be unique to be original.

I have an idea for a world where there’s invisible shadows that feed on anxiety, depression and fear and I’ve seen that idea most recently in the video game Fran Bow, but also a few other places. My more unique twist (I think) is that these shadows are basically the larva form of three types of monsters, valrvans(anxiety), kelpies(depression) and werewolves(fear). Once a shadow feeds enough, it can hatch into one of the three monsters then kill you by eating your heart before escaping. The monsters then would hunt for more hearts until it has enough strength to become human for short periods which lets them hide in society and eventually breed and cause dhampir like folk that hunt them down with their mix of abilities.

But also there’s so much I still need to know about this world that I’m not worried about writing it just yet either. 

6. What’s the word count for the single longest story you’ve written?

150k? You’re asking me to go to old work and I can’t. I know I wrote something between 100k and 150k once and it was NOT needed.

7. Do you tend to write in the same genre(s) that you read?

I try to read in the same genre that I write. But honestly not so much. I mostly read erotica and I can’t write smut. But even then I tend to filter around other genres and steal what I want for my own work. I also don’t have my work fit super strong into a genre I think. Or it flirts with a lot of subgenres. Either or. Then again, haven’t written much that needed a genre in a long time.

8. Do your characters tend to mirror one trait of yours in particular? (I’m not calling them a Mary Sue! Just wondering if there’s something you do that they do too.)

I like chats. I like to talk myself and most of my characters do to. They also tend to be self focused, like me. Also loving their family and having strong respect for parents.

9. Which of your characters is the best leader? Why?

Vere Abbey and Gwen Mallory though put the two together age would win out in who would lead best. They’re also good leaders for opposite reasons. Vere Abbey LEADS. She gives orders. She makes decisions. She executes plans. You follow along or you’re left behind. This means you can struggle to get a voice in but also you feel comfortable in a threat. She takes on all the stress for you.

Gwen will also take on the stress but she leads from behind. She takes the time to ask everyone their thoughts, or leads by example. She’s the type of person to decide when to make camp by looking around and going, “Boy, this is a nice place to camp.” and then waiting for someone else to make the final decision. She leads without leading and is far, FAR more manipulative for it, but she makes sure every voice is heard, if not obeyed.

10. Which character would be the best companion in a crisis?

Gwen Mallory. Bitch will take CARE of things.

11. Who is your favorite character you’ve ever written?

Name of my WIP: One Good Deed

Character I’m using: Sam Joshi

What inspired this character?

Sam was inspired by my desire to twist the antagonist ex-girlfriend trope in a lot of YA fiction. She’s an antagonist, and the hero’s ex-girlfriend, and jealous of the heroine for the hero’s affections for her, but there’s a lot more. She’s an antagonist because of deep personal beliefs that have nothing to do with the hero, she dumped the hero despite lingering feelings, and her jealousy has a lot more to do with the hero showing the heroine the affection Sam wanted and less to do with wanting the hero back.

How much of an effect do they have on the story?

Sam is the hero’s best friend, and one of the three named antagonist. She works as the main threat for a good part of the book, and the first one to shake the heroine’s confidence. She’s also acts as a continuation of the theme of mercy in the book. The heroine showed the hero mercy, but what will it cost them both? Sam is part of that cost as the hero’s oldest, closest friend. Will she accept his mercy? Will he have to give her up to do what’s right? Can he?

What appearance factor separates them from the rest of your characters?

Sam is the only defined Indian/desi character in the story. While she’s not connected to her culture because of story reasons, she still looks very Indian. She’s short (when both the hero and heroine are tall), dark skinned and has thick black, straight hair. 

What personality factor separates them?

Sam is a Hero. I made her specifically to act and behave like a traditional hero. In her mind, she is saving her friend’s life and soul from a tempting witch and it is her duty to slay the monster. Where the hero and heroine are both always struggling with their own morality and how they can fit into the world, Sam does not struggle. She pushes forward and tells herself that doubts are only lies to distract you from your real path.

What do you imagine as their favorite song/band?

I don’t pay close enough attention to music to know for certain what my characters would like, but Sam would enjoy checking out Indian music, to try and feel a connection to her lost heritage, and she’d also be into hard rock. Basically any work out music would be good for her.
