Gene Simmons quiere registrar a su nombre los “cuernitos del metal”.

El bajista y vocalista de Kiss,  Gene Simmons, está esperando noticias de la Oficina de Patentes y Marcas Comerciales de los Estados Unidos para ver si le permiten registrar un gesto: los famosos cuernitos metaleros.

 Frecuentemente, Simmons hace esa señal con la mano sobre el escenario, con el índice y el meñique hacia arriba, y el pulgar en un ángulo perpendicular. Si su solicitud es aprobada, añadirá una marca para este gesto a una serie aparentemente interminable de otros artículos relacionados con Kiss, desde papel higiénico hasta ataúdes.

 Simmons indicó que la marca sería para ser usada como “entretenimiento, es decir, actuaciones en vivo de un artista musical; apariciones personales de un artista musical”.

 Por supuesto, infinidad de otros rockeros han hecho ese mismo gesto con la mano. John Lennon hizo la misma señal en la portada del single “Yellow Submarine / Eleanor Rigby” de The Beatles en 1966. También puede verse en la contratapa del álbum “Witchcraft Destroys Minds and Reaps Souls”, el debut de Coven de 1969.

 En su presentación, sin embargo, Simmons dijo que fue el primero en hacer ese gesto el 14 de noviembre de 1974, durante la época del disco de Kiss “Hotter Than Hell”. 

En pocos años, Ronnie James Dio comenzó a hacer los famosos cuernos con la mano mientras estaba en el escenario, aunque siempre tuvo cuidado de aclarar que no inventó ese gesto, sólo lo hizo popular entre la multitud de fans del heavy metal. En algunas partes del mundo, los cuernos con las manos tienen un significado que se remonta a miles de años atrás, indicando que un cónyuge está engañando a su pareja. En algunas partes de África, se considera una maldición. Sin mencionar que significa “te amo” en lenguaje de señas.

 Los funcionarios probablemente considerarían similitudes con ejemplos como estos al decidir si el gesto es demasiado genérico para poder ser considerado una marca.

Flag Masks at the Olympics

Julie S let Flaghagz know we were behind the times, as we failed to report to our loyal readers about the #flagmask practice in Fencing. That UK #flagmask does look pretty good...
