2001 Copenhagen - Number 25 - Ellinor Franzén - "Om du stannar här"

A first visit to Melodifestivalen for 2001. This is Ellinor Franzén and Om du stannar här (If You Stay Here) is her second and final entry. Her first effort came in 1996 and didn't do well, failing to make the final.

The song is a wistful, guitar-jangled low-key pop ballad about a couple on the brink of separating. Exactly what happened isn't specified but it's clear some words have been said and later regretted. Ellinor wants her lover leave. So much that she's repeating something that sounds like a subtextual death threat should they stay. So great is her need to get them out of her life that she employs the rarely heard double-key change. Twice in the same chorus no less.

She clearly means it, although her demeanour suggest calmness, underneath it all she must be seething. The glitter in hair doesn't really convey the gravity of her state of mind. The song was written by Ellinor along with Tony Malm, a new song-writer for Melfest but one from whom there would be several Eurovision and Melfest songs in the future.

Ultimately this was only slightly more successful that her first entry. She finished fifth overall, although she came fourth in the televote.

Prior to her solo Melfest entries, Ellinor had been the lead singer in Fjeld, a folk/pop band which I guess Om du stannar här would fit with nicely. They had three albums out on the mid-1990s to moderate acclaim. This represents the last recorded music that Ellinor made. After this she left music to concentrate on sociology and she now works in the social care field.

Norges Skål

The song was written in 1771 as a drinking song for the “Norske Selskab”, Norwegian students in Denmark. It was confiscated and banned when it was tried published because of the strong Norwegian patriotic contents, and was not officially published until 13 years later, in Trondheim 1784, 30 years before Norway became independent.

500+ km driving ahead today. I woke up the first time at seven, decided that since I'm the driver I deserve more sleep and had another three hours. The car is almost packed and I'm almost in my day clothes.
