Five Nights (pt. 2)

Summer of 2016

“Just uploaded the final FNAF theory.” Matthew pokes his fork at a piece of broccoli and sighs. “It’s certainly a weight off my chest.”

“Now when you say ‘final’,” Mark says with a big grin. “Do you mean final final? As in the last?”

“Listen,” Matt says, pointing his fork at Mark, “we can’t all be the King of FNAF. Or release a whole album of FNAF related songs to thousands of adoring fans!”

Nate looks up from the grill and frowns. “Hey, why are we bringing me into this? I’m feeding you two.” He brings over more burgers, flicking Matt’s ear. “Stuff your attitude back in your pocket protector, MitPit.”

Matt chomps angrily on his grilled broccoli. “Hundreds... hundreds of hours of research, and for what? People still prefer you two meatheads over my content.”

“Aw, we love you, too, Matthew.” Mark flicks a piece of bell pepper at Matt with his plastic fork. “Maybe you should dye your hair if you’re so jealous.”

“Shut up.”

Nate loads his burger with grilled veggies in silence as Matthew and Mark continue to bicker, and when they finally notice that he’s not joining in as usual, they stop, sharing weighted glances between them before Matt puts a hand on Nate’s shoulder. “Nate? What’s eating you?” He pauses. “It’s not the voices again...”

“No.” Nate brushes his friend’s hand off. “Just in a bad mood.”

“Voices? Nate hears voices?” Mark looks at Matt for an explanation, but the young scientist is loathe to explain the details of Nate’s “condition” in front of him.

“Yeah, he’s heard them ever since his first time working at the restaurant.” Matt throws another glance at Mark as if to tell him that’s all he wants to say on the matter. “Do you want to talk about what’s bothering you? Steph knows a really good therapist...”

“It’s not like that.” Nate takes a bite of his burger, muttering around his food as he says, “Besides no therapist knows how to cure what I got.”

Mark shifts in his lawn chair. “So it is the voices. Nate, you really need to see someone about...”

“I told you, it isn’t the voices!” Nate shouts, and both Mark and Matthew go stiff.

“Nate.” Matt raises both hands slowly. “Put the knife down.”

Stunned, Nate looks down at his hand to see that he’s picked up a steak knife, brandishing it like he’s ready to use it on someone. He drops it immediately and leans back in his chair, covering his face with his hands. Matthew moves closer, taking his friend’s arm. “We know what you went through. We were all there.” He looks towards Mark for back-up. “It’s why we have these little meet-ups, to keep tabs on each other.”

Mark nods. “Yeah, man. So you know if you need anyone to talk to about it, you have people that understand.”

Nate shakes his head. “You won’t understand this. Not this.”

“Calm down, Edgelord,” Matthew teases, trying to coax a smile from his friend, but Nate won’t grin or even meet his eyes. More gently, Matt urges, “Try us.”

Nate takes a deep breath, pushing a hand through his hair and continuing the avoid their eyes. “I met these people who might be able to help me with my... problem.” His leg bobs nervously beneath the table, and he stares down at his hand. “But they want my help with something, or someone.” He rubs his forehead. “I’m not sure. It’s all mixed up.”

Mark leans in. “Well, what do they want you to do?”

Nate buries his head in his hands. “They want me to be a host for some... lost soul. They said a bunch of them attached themselves to me back at the restaurant, and this one in particular is stronger than the rest.” He shakes his head. “I don’t understand it, any of it, but if it means I can sleep at night again...” He hugs himself as if he’s cold, but the summer heat blazes around them. “I-I’ll do anything.”

Matt puts a hand on Nate’s back. “Why don’t you spend the night at our place? Steph won’t mind. As long as you do a few dishes.” He smiles, and finally, Nate does, too.

“Guess I can’t pass up a chance to be an honorary member of the Nerd Squad.” He rubs his nose and reaches for a mushroom before popping it in his mouth. “Maybe I’ll ask Steph about that therapist, after all.”

Mark raises his soda. “Here’s to Freddy’s and to all the little therapist kiddies who will go to college on our money.” He snorts. “Pour one out for YouTube ad rev.”

“Here’s to PTSD,” Matthew raises his drink. “And to many more hours of obsession and heartache to cope.”

Nate knocks his drink against theirs half-heartedly. “Yeah, here here.”

Mangled #1

First part of a twoshot I'm writing for the beginning of the actual story (woohoo!)

It's not my favorite work but it is.. Acceptable. I hope y'all enjoy it. And I hope y'all will find as much love for these characters as we have.

It had been years. Years of silence in the place where Mare Wily used to be the nightguard. At least when the children left and the lights went out.

Mare didn't remember exactly how it had happened. One day his brother that owned this pizzeria asked him to do a job for him, just keeping tabs on the security cams, the next he was growing deformities and feeling... Strange.

He had learned to adapt, he had taught himself how to survive amongst the animatronics that came to life at night, even befriending them.

Things changed when fresh blood entered the hallowed halls.

A new nightguard. A young girl, couldn't have been more than 24. Brunette, pretty short. The moment Mare laid eyes on her from within the shadows, he knew she was done for.

It started simple. She did her job, the animatronics came to life, she was terrified. Mare had experienced it all himself. No big deal.

But there was a change. Maybe Mare wanted to scare her off, tell her to never come back. Maybe he just did it for the thrills. Either way, he decided he wanted to involve himself in this little game the animatronics were playing.

It started with changing things on the camera's when he thought she wasn't looking. Moving an endoskeleton that had been dormant even before he was there, opening a pizza box that was previously closed. Little things, just to make her feel like this place was truly haunted... As if the evidence wasn't staring her right in the face in the shape of a giant animatronic bear.

It eventually evolved into banging on the walls and doors, turning off the lights and then turning them back on, and even breaking some of the camera's. Anything to make her feel like she wasn't welcome.

These nights kept going for weeks, until there was a certain night, a night where the young nightguard had been a little too vigilant, the night where she spotted him.

He assumed she had seen him on the camera's initially, as her next course of action was to poke her head out of the security doors and start yelling for 'the guy with long black hair'. No response. Mare wasn't going to go up and talk to her, he needed her out, not up in his business.

She was here every night, and every single night it drove Mare more to the brink of insanity. Why wouldn't she leave, why did she keep calling out to him, why did she care?

It was funny at first, imagining her going crazy thinking there was another human being in here with her. Pfft,as if. Human was far from what Mare would describe himself as nowadays. He was the one who told his animatronic friends about the best ways to go after her. Sure, he made sure they wouldn't actually get her, but what kind of person sticks murderous mascots on someone?

So he stayed away. Partially because he didn't feel like explaining himself. Partially because he thought he might hurt her.

He was a monster, after all.

Another night rolled around, this time the girl had learned something new. Over the weeks she had been clever enough to find out some things, like that she could wander around with a Freddy mask on and the animatronics mostly wouldn't notice her. But this night, she had found the speaker system. Now she was able to broadcast messages throughout the entire pizzeria.

It was getting on Mare's nerves.

"Hey!" He heard her voice loud and.. Well, not clear. But definitely loud. "I know you're in here. I don't know what happened to you, but I want to help."

Mare rolled his eyes. Why would this random girl who was probably gonna end up just like him if she kept coming in, be able to help someone like him? He had been messing with her on purpose, why couldn't she just see-

He groaned, mentally cutting his own ramblings off. She wasn't worth it. All of this wasn't worth it. He made his way over to her. She would have to find out the hard way he wasn't here to make friends.

So now here they were. Mare with his arms crossed, leaning against the wall in the hall across from her little saferoom. She had closed the door when she heard footsteps, just as a precaution, and was now staring at him through the little window.

"Who are you?"

A curious tone, riddled with caution. Mare smiled to himself.

"Nobody important."

The girl's brows furrowed in frustration. She seemed to hesitate.

"Can I open this door or will you kill me?"

Her voice came out stronger than he expected. Maybe this girl wasn't as scared of him as he thought she was.

He shrugged, "Can't promise I won't."

After another moment of hesitation, the girl stepped back, and to his surprise, the door was opened right in front of him.

Gone were the walls keeping them apart. She had put her trust in him.

Mare adjusted, pushing himself from the wall and taking a step closer, his arms still crossed. He raised an eyebrow.

"Are you stupid?" He asked, looking down at the girl in front of him.

"Are you bad?" She retorted, not answering his obvious jab. She still seemed cautious, but there was no sign of her stepping back.

He chuckled. "I suggest you leave this place unless you want the metal assholes to get you. Or worse, end up like me."

The girl frowned, crossing her arms in defiance. "I'm not leaving. Not until I find out whatever the hell is going on here, and until I find a way to help you."

Mare's face contorted into an expression of annoyance. He sighed and shook his head as he ran a hand through his messy hair.

"I don't need help."

She immediately shook her head, a solemn look on her face.

"You're obviously never leaving this place. Tell me why. Tell me it isn't cause you're somehow stuck here. I've felt it too, y'know. I've felt the pull to come back here every night. I've felt something drawing me to this place." The nightguard glanced around the room, vaguely gesturing towards the office before turning back to the man in front of her. "Hell, I'm here every day of the week just to figure out what's going on in this place. It's been months. I'm not stupid, no, far from it. I know something is going on here and I know you have something to do with it."

At those words, something lashed out in Mare. Anger built up rapidly as he snapped his gaze towards her. He felt the blue streaks on his face burn. Before he could even register what he was doing, he had grabbed the girl by her wrist and pressed her against the wall with his arm up to her throat.

"You have so much to say, huh? For someone who doesn't know shit. I have something to do with it? You act like we're to blame, but last I checked it was you wearing a damn mask and coming back every time." He barked at her, pushing her back as he let her go and stepped away. "Why are you even here anyway? Hasn't been a nightguard here in years."

She looked at him with this dumbfounded stare, as if she didn't know what to say for once. She brought her hand up to her throat and soothed the sore skin, her other hand reaching up to hug herself.

"My brother.. He.. He co-owns this place." She sighed. "He wanted to help me get back on my feet after I lost my previous job."

Mare's head snapped back up. Co-owns? He was talking to the goddamn sister of Seán Light? No wonder she was such a pain in the ass.

"Your brother, Seán?" Mare asked.

She nodded.

He visibly clenched his jaw, shook his head and turned to leave. Was this some sort of sick joke? He had finally accepted his fate, and now there was some sister who felt the need to waltz in here. Nah. Not his problem. If she died, that was not on him.

Surviving Five Nights - Bad Ending

For the longest time, he’s been stuck, frozen, held in place by fear and confusion. As the fire consumes, as it tears and rips away the puppet, the cage of confusion just falls away. Leaving only new panic in its wake.

The last he’d been in the outside world, he’d been alive, he’d been breathing. The security guard promised him he’d be okay. It’ll be alright they promised. Lies. It wasn’t. He died. He died and got stuck. Years spent watching the kids around him. Hearing that song, that same damn song over and over. Screaming, shouting, desperate, afraid, but no one ever heard. No one ever came. All this time, only ever just him.

The fire doesn’t touch him as he walks among the flames. He’s long left this plane, he’s beyond the fire’s reach now. There’s a sick satisfaction as he watches this cursed restaurant burn around him. It brings him no peace though, not even as he finds the Bonnie suit that has haunted his living nightmare these last years. It’s giving out an unholy scream, screeching to the heavens but nobody up there better be listening.

Instinct guides him to take the monster’s hand in his own, seeing horrific hellish images flash through its mind as he sees what it fears in this moment, what it thinks is waiting for it. He smirks, letting it go. Burn! Burn you monster! Hell awaits!

The day shift guard is a short way away, passed out, face down amongst the flames. He’s not the same one from before, instead he’s new, clearly unwell. A touch of his arm fills the spirit’s mind with far worse images than those from Afton’s mind. Though even in amongst the nightmares, the madman is grinning, laughing and giggling.

This man is innocent, at least in these walls. Let the monster fall but let the man live, allow him to walk free. Give him the chance to die another day. Instinct, reflexes. If he was to think too hard, he wouldn’t be able to do it, but without the focus, he pulls the guard from the fire, and watches as the fire trucks try to contain the blaze.

That old place that’s never been up to code. They’ll never win. In a few hours, the sun will rise, and Fazbear’s pizza will hopefully be dead for the last time.

And from the ashes, Natemare will rise.

“C’mon, it’s my turn!”

“No way, it’s my turn! You’ve been hogging the controller for an hour already! Natemare said we get an hour each!” Natpai pouts at Bones, who just ignores him for a moment, continuing to play the game.

“I know, but I haven't died yet! That’s not fair!” Bones takes his arm back from Natpai who was gripping onto his sleeve.

“Quit being an asshole and let me play something for once!”

Phantom walks into the living room, ignoring the other two as he makes his way to the couch. Paying attention to his phone, he doesn’t notice Natpai sitting next to him right away.

“Ooh, texting your girlfriend again?”

“Dude, seriously, how many times have I told you not to do that!” Lightly shoving Natpai away from his side, Phantom goes back to texting.

Natpai rolls his eyes and crosses his arms over his chest. “Yeah, well I wouldn’t have to if Bones would just LET ME PLAY!!”

“Hey, no yelling, that shit's annoying.” Looking over at Bones, Phantom sighs. “Can you let him play? You’ve been at it for a while now.”

“No way-” Bones is interrupted when the doorbell rings.

“I got it!” Natemare walks out of the kitchen, cleaning his hands on his apron.

“Mare! Bones won't let me use the Playstation!”

“Bones, what did I tell you! You guys get an hour each, I don't care if you haven't died yet, find a damn save and give the controller to Natpai!” Mare opens the door and looks over at Phantom. “You can help, you know?”

“I could, but they don’t listen to me. Besides, I have to study, exams are coming up.”

“Yeah, and I don’t see you with a textbook in your hands, now do I?” 

Phantom rolls his eyes, turning his attention back to his phone.

“Did I come at a bad time?” You smile at Mare while holding onto an empty tupperware in your hands.

“No, not at all. Oh here, let me take that back.” Reaching out to take the tupperware, he motions for you to come inside. “I just started dinner if you wanna stay for a while?”

“Oh um, some other time would be perfect, but I actually have plans with my parents for dinner.”

“I thought your parents weren’t living around here anymore? Did they come to visit?”

“Yeah, they got some time off of work to come down here today. They wanna catch up over dinner. You know how it is. My dad's probably gonna grill me on my grades, though. Kinda slipped up in math, but I mean it’s my last general course then I’m off to do my major.”

Mare puts the tupperware on the table that's by the door. “Yeah, right. Well, I hope your night is fun. I know mine will be with these guys.”

“Dude, you did not just turn off the PlayStation!” Both of them hear Natpai yell from the living room, making Mare visibly annoyed.

“I can tell. Thanks for lunch the other day, by the way. It was really good!” You smile up at him, feeling a little nervous.

“I’m glad it came out good. You and Bones both like the same thing, and since I had a lot of leftovers, I thought you’d appreciate it.”

“I did! Thanks again! Hey, maybe we can hang out tomorrow? I don’t have class all day.”

“That should be fine. I get off work around five, we can get something to eat near your place.”

“Yeah! That works for me! See ya tomorrow!” You give him a quick hug before waving goodbye.

Mare smiles, waving back as he watches you walk down the street. Closing the door, he takes the tupperware with him to the kitchen.

Bones walks in behind Mare, grabbing a cookie from the plate on the counter. Before he can take a bite though, Natemare takes the cookie back. “Hey! I was gonna eat that!”

“And now you’re not. Dinner is almost done, go set the table.” Mare checks the food in the oven and calls over his shoulder to Bones. “Oh yeah. You’re grounded tomorrow night.”

Stopping right as he enters the dining room, Bones turns back to Mare. “Seriously, again?”

Mare stands back up, grabbing the stack of plates that are on the counter. “Yes, again. Maybe if you listened for once and did what I told you instead of being a brat, then maybe you wouldn’t get in trouble.”

Bones rolls his eyes, taking the plates. “Whatever, since when did you get so parental?” 

“Since you started being an ass for no reason. You’re gonna apologize to Natpai later, alright?”

“Yeah, yeah. I am.”

“Good!” Mare ruffles Bones’ hair, turning back around to finish dinner.

After dinner, Phantom helps Mare clean up while the other two get ready for bed. He notices Mare being more quiet than usual. Picking up a napkin, Phantom balls it up in his hand and tosses it at Mare, catching him off guard when it hits him in the face.

“What the hell, Phantom?” Picking up the napkin, Mare places it with the rest of the trash.

Phantom shrugs as he puts another plate in his pile. “You’ve spaced out lately, especially after (Y/n) came by earlier. What’s up with you two?”

“Nothing's up. I’ve just had a lot on my mind with everything going on.” Making his way to the kitchen, Mare throws out the trash he collected from dinner. Passing Phantom on his way to finish clearing the table, Mare stops when he sees him giving him a look. “Seriously, it’s nothing.”

“I don’t think it’s nothing. I think you like her and don’t know how to confess.” Phantom takes the dishes to the sink to start washing them. “You can just tell her, I don’t think it’ll turn out bad.”

Bringing Phantom the last of the dishes, Mare carefully puts them in the sink. “Look, so what if I do? I can’t just confess to my best friend like that. (Y/n) and I have been friends since middle school. We’re practically like siblings.”

Phantom hands Mare a few dishes to dry and put away before he responds. “Is that how you really feel?”

“No, but it’s probably how she feels.” Mare dries each dish carefully, putting them away.

“Why not at least try? Instead of going to a restaurant why not just go to a park before the sunsets? You guys can just bring the food there, and it wouldn’t be noisy. You’d be able to talk and bring it up. It’ll be fine.” Handing him the last of the dishes, Phantom turns off the water and washes away any soap that was leftover in the sink. He glances at Mare who stares down at the cup he’s drying. “You have every right to be nervous, but c’mon, you've got this. When has being nervous stopped you from doing anything?”

Mare sighs, putting the cup away. “You’re right, I just don’t want to risk losing another friend.”

“Last time wasn’t your fault. Fallouts happen between friends, it's normal.”

Mare smiles at Phantom, tossing the rag over his shoulder. “Go to bed, it’s getting late.”

“You better take my advice.” Phantom smiles back at Mare before heading up to his room.

The next day after work, Natemare rushes home from work almost tripping over his own feet as he stumbles inside.

Bones looks up from his laptop where he’s sitting on the couch. “You okay?”

“Fine, where’s Phantom?” Regaining his balance, Mare walks into the living room looking around.

“He’s at Lexi’s, he said they were gonna study for exams.”

Mare sighs. Feeling exhausted, he runs a hand through his hair, calming himself down. “Right. I forgot he asked me if he could go over this morning.” Reaching into his wallet, Mare hands Bones a couple of bills. “Order pizza for you and Natpai for dinner tonight. I won’t be home late, but still.”

Taking the money, Bones shoves it in his jacket pocket, nodding at Mare. Relaxing back into the couch, he goes back to finish up his homework for the day while Mare makes his way upstairs to change.

After putting on his shoes, Mare picks up his phone and texts you that he’ll be there in a couple of minutes. Grabbing his jacket, he passes Natpai’s room on his way downstairs. “No fighting while I’m gone, you two!” Taking his keys from one of the hooks, Mare double checks that he has everything he needs before heading out the door. “I’ll be back later!”

“'Kay! Have fun!” Bones shouts at Mare as he walks out the front door. “Natpai! What kind of pizza do you want?”

“Anything but no pineapple or mushrooms!”

“Got it!” Bones takes out his phone to start the order when he gets a text from Mare.

“Don’t be a dick and order what Natpai doesn’t like. You did last time and he didn’t eat all night.”

Bones giggles to himself before he orders the food and makes sure he doesn’t do what he did last time since he doesn’t want Mare to scold him again.

Turning up the radio in his car, Mare drives off towards your place. His grip on the steering wheel tightens the closer he gets to your apartment. “There’s nothing to be nervous about, it’s just dinner with a friend.” Parking in front of your building, Mare turns off the car and sinks in his seat. “Yeah, a friend you have feelings for.” 

Sighing, he sits upright again, taking out his phone to let you know he’s there.

Leaning his head against the window, he lets his mind drift off for a moment. Thoughts start to race as he starts to forget his surroundings. Tapping his fingers on the steering wheel, thoughts of everything that could go wrong keep popping up, making him feel more anxious by the second.

Hearing tapping on the passenger window, Mare jumps, getting startled till he sees you waving and smiling at him when you get his attention. Unlocking the door, he smiles back when you climb into the passenger side. “Hey! Ready to go?”

Closing the car door, you put on your seatbelt, still smiling at him. “Yup! I’m honestly starving, I wasn’t able to eat a full lunch since I forgot I had a meeting with my professor today.”

Starting the car, Mare carefully pulls out of the parking spot. “Everything okay?”

“Oh yeah, everything is fine! Just going through the lessons again since finals are coming up and I just didn’t understand a few things.”

Mare nods in response, keeping his eyes on the road ahead. “You can listen to whatever you want. Also, I was thinking we could just pick up the food and take it to the park nearby. What do you think?”

“Sounds good to me! I’m glad it’s still kind of warm out around this time.” Scrolling through your phone, you decide to put your playlist on shuffle for the rest of the drive.

After picking up the food, you two arrive at the nearby park. Mare takes the bags of food with him when he gets out of the car. Walking over to your side, he waits for you to get out. 

Double-checking you have everything in your bag, you step out of the car, looking around and closing the door behind you. Mare puts the alarm on his car and hands you the bag with your food. “Hilltop, or by the water?”

“Hilltop, I think it’d be nice to see the sunset today.” You both smile at each other as you make your way up the hill. 

Feeling the breeze pass by makes Mare feel a bit calmer about the situation. He was starting to feel like things would be okay, even if it doesn’t go the way he hopes it will.

Reaching the top of the hill, you set the food down on one of the picnic tables. Taking a seat, you two immediately dig into your dinner. If Mare was honest, he’d also confess that he was starving from not eating all day since he was feeling anxious up until this moment.

Finishing up your meals, Mare asks how it went when you met up with your parents the night before. You tell him everything, making him laugh over a joke your dad told your mom. Things were just like how they always are between you two, full of laughs and great stories to tell. 

Mare offers to throw away the trash while you go sit on the grass facing the sunset. He smiles softly as he makes himself comfortable sitting next to you.

Feeling the sun hitting his face as he closes his eyes, Mare takes a deep breath in. The nervous feeling slowly starts to build up again, but he pushes it aside as he looks over at you. “Hey, (Y/n)?”

Humming in response, you smile when you turn to look at him. “Yeah? What’s up?”

Mare glances down at the grass, realizing he’s been picking at it. Quickly brushing off the few blades of grass from his palm, he looks back up at you. “Uh, well, I wanna tell you something, and you don’t really have to reply to it or anything, but I’ve just been thinking about us. How we’ve been friends for most of our lives.” Mare’s cheeks start to turn a light pink and he’s too busy rambling to see yours are too.

“I treasure our friendship. You know I love hanging out with you and everything, but I can’t stop thinking about being something more.” Nervously, Mare bites the inside of his cheek as he lets out everything he wants to say. “You have no idea how much I’d love to take you out on dates, to cuddle up with you on cold nights, to be the person you’re always happy and feel safe to be around. (Y/n), I love you. So much.”

Gently, you raise your hand to his face and wipe away a few tears falling down his cheeks. “You’re always so sweet, Mare. I always liked that about you. Well, there’s a lot of other things I like about you too.” Giggling, you lean in and kiss his cheek, seeing him start to smile again. “To be honest, I’ve also been feeling the same way, but was afraid of ruining the friendship we have. I was fine with the idea of us just staying friends because that was enough for me.”

Mare holds one of your hands in his while rubbing his eyes with his free hand. Laughing to himself, he grins, gently squeezing your hand. “So, does that mean you’ll say yes to a date this weekend?”

“Of course! I‘d love that!”
