Fishuary day 4: Surgeonfish
Tumblr media
I chose a juvenile Chevron Tang!
(Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis)
I love the way the colors came out on this one. The stripes took a hot second to make, but we got em done.
Ignore his creepy eyes, my reference photo had the silly layers/rings so I decided to add them T-T

(I'm honestly not sure if we're supposed to tag you with every post or not-)

Rapid-fire Fishuary! First week's worth done in one day lol
Day 1 - Shark
This is good ol Terry The Fat Shark from the titular meme, which my friend sends me every single Wednesday 😁The original photo is a great white, maybe even Deep Blue iirc?
Day 2 - Salmonid
Posted on my plushie blog!
Day 3 - Wrasse
Carpenter's flasher wrasse (Paracheilinus carpenteri)
Day 4 - Surgeonfish
Black longnose tang aka Christmas Island tang (Zebrasoma rostratum). Saw one of these once and have been enchanted ever since...
Day 5 - Triggerfish
Queen triggerfish (Balistes vetula)
Day 6 - Catfish
Pygmy cory cats (Corydoras pygmaeus)
Day 7 - Pufferfish
Fahaka puffer (Tetraodon lineatus), specifically @likesplatterpaint's Louie!

Day 4 of @fish-daily's Fishuary: surgeon fish
According to hawaii.gov, they are called that because they "have sharp spines at the base of their tail or caudal fin, resembling a scalpel used by surgeons." I picked Kole because they are "a small but important fish for reefs. Also delicious."

Fishuary 2024 - Day 4: Surgeonfish @fish-daily
Who could have thought drawing a surgeonfish could be so hard? Its shape was very unintuitive to me. I had to remake this elegant unicornfish (Naso elegans) five times or so, hence the background that I hurriedly coloured to erase the traces.

Fishuary part uhhh I've lost count... 4? Was dragging my feet on posting since February is over but @fish-daily confirmed they still wanna see more!
Day 18 - Pacific Ocean
Bluetail Unicornfish (Naso caeruleacauda). These guys just look like those super stereotypical "fish" outlines, I kind of love it
Day 19 - Arctic Ocean
Arctogadus glacialis - one of several fish known as "Arctic" or "polar" cod. Absolute grungly pathetic looking beast
Day 20 - Indian Ocean
Red cornetfish (Fistularia petimba). What a shaped creature.
Day 21 - Atlantic Ocean
Bogue (Boops boops). Self explanatory.
Day 22 - Your favorite!
Goldfish again, duh. This time it's my favorite breed, the watonai, which has a long body with the fancy double tail. On days when I hate myself I look at the $2,000 watonai on the Blackwater Creek website T-T
Day 23 - Bioluminescence
The scaleless black dragonfish (Melanostomias bartonbeani) is a mesopelagic fish with an array of light emitting organs used to find prey, camouflage from predators, and signal to mates. I can't tell you any more than that since the rest of the NatGeo article is behind a paywall lmao
