For example, you can fish right from the beach or take a charter boat out to the deep blue water of the Gulf Stream. Learn to harness the wind on a kiteboard or take lessons in leisure on paddleboards with your crew. There's little in the way of franchises and fast food but don’t confuse “doing without” with “going without.” Instead, think of soulful coastal restaurants and interesting mom-and-pop shops. While your setting will be a bit more on the untamed side of nature, accommodations are as modest or modern as you like. The beauty of Hatteras is that you can easily reach all the other OBX hotspots, but call a simpler and quieter part of the barrier islands your home away from home.
https://kayakfishinsider.com/ highlights winter on Hatteras Island, with businesses that are open and activities that are occurring during this special season.

The Empty Nest.......
The absolute hardest thing for both Eric and me but especially for me was coming to the realization that the nest had become empty. When Kristen came home for spring break, with no chance to return to her beloved Verde Valley School to finish her senior year, enjoy the senior traditions and of course graduate, went house hunting and found an absolute knock out steal of a deal, a beautiful large 2 story home in Kona. Rande, Chucho, Sasha, Kristen and Koen decided to make it home and quickly moved in. We were not quite prepared that this empty nest could and/or would become a permanent arrangement so quickly but life has a way of pitching curve balls. I think I am still not accepting the fact that all my girls are grown and living their own very successful lives. This was the catalyst for Eric and I to realize that our dream of living aboard and becoming full time cruisers was actually going to be a reality.
KaiFe:
Falicia has FINALLY given up the exhausting work of serving in the restaurant business and has taken her next step toward working in education as she had always dreamed, ever since she was a young senior at Verde Valley School. "I am going to come back here some day as a teacher mom" she told me long ago. Now she is serving in the admin. office at Kona Pacific Charter School and wears many hats there at Kona's finest Waldorf school. Our little bolt of lightening, her son, Kai skipped first grade at his last Waldorf school up Hamakua Coast and will be entering second grade, right there where mama administers every day. He is a sharp little boy and can easily read at 4th grade level. He can do algebra problems in his head and solves most mathematical riddles before any of the rest of us can. He keeps his teachers hopping so they decided best if he skipped at least one grade. They packed up their truck and moved back to Honaunau not far from their home where Kai was born. These two are quite the team and words cannot explain how fun it is to watch them learn and grow together. They are the real beach buns of the family and on their spare time they are found exploring the island and her many hidden secrets. Kai has become quite the swimmer and is dying to put on a bc and regulator so he can breathe underwater like the fish. We look forward to teaching them both how to scuba dive in the near future.
FamVela:
Rande, Chucho and Sasha are living and loving their new home which they share with Kristen and Koen. Chucho has created a marvelously scrumptious garden which feeds them fresh food daily while he also works full time in construction and is waiting for the come back of Kona Brewing Co. Where he has earned employee of the month several times. I'd you ever make it to Kona Brew Co. you want Chucho as your server. Rande has become quite the entertainer opening their home to friends and family dinners. Their cat, Big Boy rescued two little pinkie rat babies who were only a few hours old and brough them to Ms. Rande. She and Sasha, being the animal lovers they are, nursed them, love them and kept them alive. Now they are thriving bouncing little baby rats who are so attached to these girls that all they want to do is play with them and won't stand still until they do. Rande and Sasha were giving feedings every 4 hours for weeks until Nibbles and Squeaks became old enough to eat formula on their own. Sasha Enjoyed her 8th grade year at Hawaii Technical Academy and, well, this year, will be learning from home like most of the kids on the islands. Sasha is quite the popular girl and the house is always busy with her friends around playing in the pool, yard and of course video games. Sasha is the champ and I don't know anyone who has defeated her yet!!
KrisKo
Kristen and Koen are precious to watch. They are so in love and devoted to each other. We have given them the name KrisKo because they truly have become one. Their graduation from high school this year was........unusual. it was at the height of the Covid scare and most people were afraid to leave their homes so we had 2 drive by graduation get togethers. They were both buried under their leis and even though it was not what they were expecting for their high school graduation. They handled it well. Their outlook together is always like, "well, that happened, okay, next!!!" Their bright outlook on life inspires EVERYONE they come into contact with. Kriaten graduated from VVS with her IB diploma so when she starts college she already has her first year of credits behind her so she received a nice jump start on that. She and Koen are planning to attend U of H Palamanui Campus in Kona and begin their education. Kristen is not sure exactly where she wants to make her career, she is things cosmetology lately and Koen wants to work in marine biology. They live in the right place for both of those venues plus Koen works very hard in his families business of providing and maintaining purified water filling stations throughout the island. They are both working their tails off and doing a great job of making their way in the world.
Eric and I feel very blessed and relaxed to know that the kids are all doing so well. We sleep well at night knowing the family is still stuck together, supporting one another and caring for each other in these trying times. The island of Hawaii is pretty much cut off from the world right now but no deaths from the virus so they are all making the very best of this situation which is anything but. Please enjoy these pictures of this bunch of kids that we miss terribly. We think of them constantly and thank heaven for whatsapp!!!

Notable Fishing Destinations in the US
Tumblr media
Today, fishing remains one of the most popular forms of outdoor recreation in the country. It serves as a viable alternative to more intense sports and recreational activities like hiking, cycling, skiing, and swimming. The US is home to some of the best fishing destinations in the world. Kona in Hawaii is one of the most notable fishing locations in the States. Due to the calmness of the islands' lakes, they provide an outstanding atmosphere for angling. The island also has one of the best deep-sea fishing environments in the country. Tuna, sharks, and Ono constitute the bulk of those caught by anglers fishing offshore. Similarly, the Florida Keys, located on the southern shores of Florida, is often considered the fishing capital of the world and a fishing paradise by most anglers. This archipelago is about 125 miles long. The western end of the Florida Keys is well known for its saltwater and deep-sea fishing, with some areas reaching a depth of about 2,000 feet. Mackerel, sailfish, barracuda, white marlin, and kingfish constitute most of the catch in the Florida keys. The Montauk beach resort is a fishing haven for tourists from across the globe. Located on New York's Long Island, it experiences an influx of tourists each year. Visitors of Montauk beach can participate in both offshore and inshore fishing. While fishing inshore, one is likely to catch green bonito, flounder, porgy, mackerel, and blackfish. Offshore, one will encounter blue marlin, giant tuna, sharks, and dolphins. Another fishing destination worthy of note is Lake Mead in Nevada. Lake Mead is a reservoir with one of the largest water capacities in the United States. It is about 465 feet deep and its surface encompasses about 150,000 acres. The lake is home to some of the largest fish in the country, particularly the striped bass. Other notable catches include crappie, catfish, bluegill, and green sunfish. While the lake is open to fishing all year round, the fishing season at Lake Mead peaks from July to December. Similarly, the Outer Banks in North Carolina is a fishing destination that is home to various fishing activities such as pier fishing and inshore charter fishing. However, most visitors to the Outer Banks prefer to fish from large boats offshore. These boats are usually comfortable, providing passengers with a bathroom, necessary fishing supplies, and snacks. The Outer Banks is also home to one of the best surf-fishing environments in the state. The Bighorn River in Montana is a significant fly fishing hub. However, it's important to note that a large portion of the river is restricted from public access. This is primarily because the river flows through tribal lands and private property. The significant catches in the Bighorn River are the prized rainbow and brown trout. This river also has a resort that avails visitors the opportunity of fishing guides and private access to the river. Finally, the Kobuk River, located in Alaska, is a fishing destination that provides an unusual fishing experience to accomplished anglers. The river is about two hundred miles long and is home to rare fish like the arctic char, arctic grayling, northern pike, and shellfish. These extraordinary shellfish can be up to a yard long and are found north of the Arctic Circle.

The Majestic Marlin
The marlin is one of the largest fish of the species Istiophoridae. Marlins are one of the largest and most powerful species of fish in the entire world - they also happen to be one of the most powerful and beautiful. Zane Gray and Ernest Hemingway and Zane Grey made adventures of fishing for marlin a bucket list for almost every fisherman.
Tumblr media
The marlin is one of the most magnificent fish on Earth, and their beauty is only matched by their power and athleticism.  Fishing for marlin is one of the most exciting and challenging adventures that a fisherman can hope to experience and allow you to have a story to tell for the rest of your life!
The excitement of hooking into a Marlin is the acrobatic display they put on during the fight. They dance, fight and leap on the surface of the water - All done despite their enormous size. It’s no wonder that landing one of these majestic creatures give any angler legendary status.
Like Sailfish and Swordfish, Marlins are Billfish, a highly predatory species that uses its spear-like ‘bill’ to slash at and stun their prey. A migratory species, they are usually found in tropical or sub-tropical waters and change their location according to the warmth of the water. There are four main Marlin varieties: Blue, Black, White and Striped Marlin. Despite their names they all display a fairly similar color scheme and characteristics, meaning that the untrained eye could mistake, say, a Blue Marlin for a Striped Marlin or a Black Marlin for a Blue one.
When you’re deciding where to book your Marlin fishing trip it’s important to think about the season you’ll be going in and the specific Marlin species you want to target. Fishing charters specifically targeting Marlin are particularly common in  Mexico, Hawaii, Costa Rica, the Virgin Islands and Australia among many others, and in some destinations Marlin fishing trips run all year round. A good way of working out the Marlin fishing season of an area is by considering the local water temperature at that time of year: both Blue and Black Marlins love warm water. We list our top 3 here.
Tumblr media
Marlin Fishing in Hawaii
Some of the most consistent and best Marlin fishing can be found in waters around Hawaii. The island of Kona is famous worldwide for its Marlin fishing, not just for the fact that the largest marlin at 1805 lbs i(in 1970), but due the fact that there have been over 60 different Granders (fish over 1000 lb) have been caught in these Hawaiian waters.
Marlin Fishing in Mexico
Marlin fishing in Mexico is productive March through August in Cancun, and Cozumel for Blue and white marlin. However its Cabo San Lucas and the Bisbee’s Black and Blue marlin fishing tournament – that is known as the richest fishing tournament in the world.  Fall is the season for most of the big tournaments if you’re making plans for marlin fishing Cabo style.
Marlin Fishing in Australia
There are many place in Australia to hook up Marlin – Cairns, Sydney, and Port Stephens  - with The Main beach area of the Gold Coast being the most productive in terms of numbers. A key feature to the success of marling fishing in Australia is the fact the Great Barrier Reef is an amazing and fertile breeding ground for marlin.
Stop dreaming and start making plans to check Marlin fishing off your bucket ilst. Doesn’t matter where you decide to go - just choose and make it happen!

Let’s start with the Island of Hawaii, known to those who live there simply as ‘Big Island.’ The best fishing location here in Kailua-Kona, a town on the island’s west coast.
Here, you can go to Kamakahonu Beach, where a variety of indigenous and colorful coral live. Many fish live in these corals, so you’ll have the opportunity to catch something that you can’t find anywhere else!
2. Hilo Harbor
Hilo Harbor is also a place on Big Island, but it’s out East rather than to the west. Just rent a car and you can get there pretty easily!
In any case, this fishing destination refers to the portion of the bay in Hilo that’s bounded seaward. You can stand on the bay and throw your fishing rod in knowing that you’re almost certain to catch one of the tuna that lives in the harbor.
3. Hawaii Fishing Charter
Moving away from Big Island and onto Oahu, the most populated of the Hawaiian Islands, you’re going to want to head to the Hawaii fishing charter.
This is a great place for deep-sea fishing that offers half-day and ¾ day fishing charters as well as full-day ones. You can choose how much time you want to invest!
This is the perfect place to catch the magnificent Pacific blue marlin, which is one of Hawaii’s greatest sources of pride.
4. Hilton Hawaiian Village
While not strictly a place for fishing, the Hilton Hawaiian Village resort in Honolulu is a great place to relax and make a big catch. You can take one of the resort’s many motorboats out onto the ocean and catch some mahi-mahi.
When you’re done, you can come back to the resort and relax on the beach. The amazing restaurants at the resort are the perfect way to unwind after a long day of fishing!
5. The Shores of Maui
We know, we know- including a whole island on this list may feel like cheating. But it’s impossible to pick any one fishing spot in Maui when the entire island is surrounded by the most interesting and unique fish you can find anywhere in the world.
Big game fishing is a big deal here. On the shores of Maui, you can head off on a deepsea sport fishing trip to find spearfish, mahi-mahi, blue marlin, ono, and more.
Have Fun Fishing in Hawaii
When it comes to catching exotic and intriguing fish, there’s nowhere quite like the Aloha State.
Now that you know where to start fishing in Hawaii, it’s time to continue planning your trip to paradise.

The Hawaiian Islands are known for beautiful weather all year round, but conditions can vary at different heights, so we want you to be prepared on arrival.

 1. Snorkel with Sharks, Oahu
One Ocean Diving offers a shark tour, unlike all others, the only one in which guests snorkel without a cage, and the only one that goes to where the sharks live rather than attracting them with food, so they can be observed in a calm, natural state.
This is an exhilarating experience, perhaps even life-changing, a chance to get up close with the oceans’ apex predators and gain new insight and understanding of these magnificent creatures.
Owned and run by marine biologists and experts in shark behavior patterns, One Ocean is part of a conservation and scientific study group. There are no age requirements, but guests must be at least 4 feet tall and strong swimmers: children must be accompanied by two adults. Tours are two hours long, with about 30-45 minutes in the water.
Operating out of Haleiwa, close to the river for an amazing SUP experience, surfing spots Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay, and famous Matsumoto’s shave ice (though Anahulu’s down the street is more flavorful, shorter line, and less expensive).
2. Doors-Off Helicopter Tour, Kauai
Jack Harter Helicopters is a must! About seventy percent of gorgeous Kauai is inaccessible by foot; the only way to see it all is by helicopter, and flying with the doors off means the stunning views are completely unobstructed. Spectacular views surround the guests, including Na Pali Coast, Waimea Gorge, Mount Waialeale, and Jurassic Falls.
For doors-off tours, passengers must be at least ten years old. They do offer tours with the doors on (and air conditioning) that are suitable for younger guests; however, this can wind up being an expensive nap for little ones!
Tours last 60 or 90 minutes in total air time; plan for additional time for safety instructions and transportation to and from the helicopters (provided by the company). Flying out of Lihue, Jack Harter Helicopters is close to Kalapaki Beach and Backcountry Adventures tubing tours.
3. Manta Ray Night Dive and Snorkel Ecoadventure, Big Island
Neptune Charlie’s Ocean Safari helps guests get up close to these gentle giants, averaging a twelve-foot wingspan. At sunset, the boats leave the Kona coast to reach the offshore focus of hundreds of rays.
Manta rays are attracted to the area using lights, held onto by guests, and they put on a show of waving and rolling in search of plankton within inches of the snorkelers. There are no age restrictions, but six years and up is recommended.
The three-hour tour leaves from Honokohau Marina, close to Pine Trees Surfing Beach and Ocean Rider Seahorse Farm, making it a perfect ending for a day of sun, sand, and nature.
4. Sunrise Lava Tour, Big Island
Epic Lava Tours organizes a spectacular guided walk to visit the active lava stream. Beginning within Volcanoes National Park, guests get within a few feet of fresh lava, take in the sunrise, and visit lesser-known areas within the rainforest park.
Snack, water, and rain ponchos provided. The hike is long, about four to five miles in each direction, depending on current volcanic activity. There are no age restrictions, but it may be too strenuous a hike for very young children.
Additionally, volcanic fumes are strong; pregnant women, infants, and the elderly are advised not to get this close. Tours begin at 4 a.m. and end between 9 and 10, depending on how near the lava is flowing that day.
5. Na Pali Sunset Dinner Sail, Kauai
Captain Andy’s catamaran sails feature dramatic views of the rugged Na Pali Coast. Sheer and jagged cliffs encounter with spinner dolphins plus more sea life, and sunset colors make this an excellent choice for a romantic evening for two.
Great dinner with cocktails included. Boats leave from Ele’ele and last four hours. Stop by Kauai Island Brewing Company on the way for a flight of local beers, as food and cocktails on the boat aren’t served until a couple of hours after departure.
6. Molokini Express, Adventure Snorkeling, Maui
Blue Water Rafting offers one of the shorter and more affordable snorkeling trips out of Maui to the crystal waters off Molokini, a volcanic crater and seabird sanctuary. The inflatable rafts are small and maneuverable, able to get very close to plunging cliffs.
This is amazing snorkeling in areas where bigger boats are unable to fit, with tropical fish everywhere and over an hour spent in the water. The highlight of the trip, though, is the ride itself, as the tiny boat catches air, leaping over the waves.
Children aged four and up are welcome; younger children are allowed on private charters. The tour lasts two hours total and leaves from the Kihei Boat Ramp, near Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, home to endangered wetland birds, and Maui Brewing Company, with a tasting room and brewery tours.
7. Mountain Tubing through Canals and Tunnels, Kauai
Kauai Backcountry Adventures is the only group to offer tube tours on the island. Guests are driven through the rainforest to the old Lihue Plantation, where they are given a headlamp and tube and set to float through the old irrigation system built in the late nineteenth century.
Fun and knowledgeable guides will keep people on the go as people travel through lush landscapes and through dark tunnels. Finish with a light lunch. Children five years and up allowed. Tour departs from Lihue, near the helicopter tours, Fern Grotto, and Lydgate Beach Park.
8. North Shore Beach Tour, Oahu
Aloha Beach Bus’ deluxe tour breaks travelers out of Waikiki and up to Haleiwa in the North Shore for an all-day sun and surf adventure. Learn about the history of surfing among Hawaiian royalty, and visit the most famous surf spots in the world, Banzai Pipeline, and Waimea Bay, with water clear enough to see the bottom and a huge rock for cliff jumping.
Guests are invited to swim, surf, snorkel, canoe, or scuba here. At Pua’ena Point, snorkel with sea turtles, before moving on the Wailua River for standup paddleboarding and shave ice. Finish with a trip to the Dole Plantation for pineapple ice cream. Lunch at Tsue’s Farm is included. All ages welcome.
9. Tour a Kona Coffee Farm, Big Island
Kona Old Style at Kuaiwi Farm offers guided tours of their five-acre, organic, sustainable coffee plantations. Alongside coffee berries, find macadamias, cacao, bananas, pineapples, and more. Learn the intricacies of the coffee-making process from start to finish.
Tours include a delightful tasting of their own award-winning coffees, mac nuts, and jams. The basic tour lasts two hours and welcomes all ages. An optional chocolate-making class can be added for guests over ten years.
10. Spot a Sunken Ship from aboard a Submarine, Maui
Atlantis Submarines Maui explores ocean depths in search of reef sharks, dolphins, eels and tropical fish. Diving over 100 feet underwater, the submarines pass by a sunken ship and visit three reefs.
This is a great escape from the midday heat, and it’s a perfect way for not-so-strong swimmers to experience marine wildlife. No age limits, but guests must be at least 36” tall. Tour leaves from Lahaina, right off Front Street, near Banyan Court Park and several restaurants, boutiques, and beaches.

Kim’s budget it is: Council fails to approve amended version
After almost 12 hours of haggling over a volcano-torched budget, a contentious County Council session ended Wednesday night with the council unable to pass a spending plan.
The 2-7 vote means Mayor Harry Kim’s $518 million plan goes into effect, even though loss of property taxes from Puna lands consumed by lava leaves a crater of at least $5 million. The council’s action means property tax increases are extremely unlikely this year, as the charter requires property tax rates to be set by June 20 after a public hearing.
Only North Kona Councilwoman Karen Eoff and South Kona/Ka‘u Councilwoman Maile David voted in favor of the budget.
Finance Director Deanna Sako said the administration will await the council’s June 19 vote on a general excise tax increase before determining how best to balance the budget. Sako had presented lists of possible cuts, including a $5 million and a $7 million spending cut scenario.
“It’s all going to depend on what happens with the general excise tax,” Sako said Thursday.
Even the smaller list of cuts would entail noticeable reductions in county services, such as doing away with recycling programs, cutting county swimming pool hours to three days a week, suspending festivals such as the Cherry Blossom Festival and July 4 celebrations, and doing away with programs such as Summer Fun, fishing derbies and track and field.
The council faced the option of passing its annual budget with the $5 million hole in it, cutting services, furloughing employees or raising general excise taxes or property taxes.
Kohala Councilman Tim Richards pushed for a variety of cuts, but didn’t have the support of council colleagues.
“It’s my belief we have to cut the budget knowing that we will probably get reimbursed and with the reimbursements we will have more revenue going forward,” Richards said. “I think we have to make some pretty strong cuts to deal with this. I think that’s the direction we need to go.”
The budget adds $500,000 to grants for nonprofits, restoring the allocation to its previous level of $1.5 million. It also puts $270,000 into the council contingency fund, giving the nine council members $30,000 each to spread around their districts. This past year, they had $75,000 each.
The budget increases landfill tipping fees and housing grants to reach its new historic level, a 5.5 percent increase over last year. While no property tax increases are planned this year, the fuel tax will ratchet up by an additional 4 cents.
The council had voted 5-4 earlier Wednesday to pass a scaled-down general excise tax increase, with Puna Councilwomen Eileen O’Hara and Jen Ruggles, along with Kona Councilman Dru Kanuha and Hamakua Councilwoman Valerie Poindexter, voting no.
