I’ve always wanted to read more H.G. Wells, and I needed a new listen. The fact that David Tennant and Jason Isaacs are narrators certainly doesn’t hurt. Special thank you to my Patrons! *Want more? The First Men in the Moon
Tumblr media
                                     H. G. Wells wrote The First Men in the Moon 1901, before humans had even gone into space and were still experimenting with flight through zeppelins and gliders, and imagined what it would be like to go all the way to the Moon. While I generally find Wells work innovative and thought provoking, this book brought about more frustration than I'd anticipated. Last year I read two of his books, The Time Machine, and The War of the Worlds, both of which I've highly recommended to friends; The First Men in the Moon isn't like the others. The characters aren't that likeable, other than a few instances where Cavor (a scientist and the inventor of the space craft) goes off on his scientific, idealistic, explanations for wanting to show the intelligence of humanity through geometry. Bedford, a failed buissiness man and current play-write, is generally unlikable and for the most part, displays a very negative portrayal of humanity while on the Moon.
While on/in the moon Cavor and Bedford are able to breathe as well as to eat the plants that are described as growing on the surface (though without positive results). Wells describes a race that lives within the Moon called Selenites, a humanoid-ant-like creature. The creation of another world within the Moon is the most exciting part of the novel. [Spoilers] Once Bedford is back on the Earth, having left Cavor behind, he tells of his experiences of coming back to Earth and then the story takes a sharp shift from classic science-fiction to a sociological, political agenda. Wells describes the culture and politics of the Selenites, much of which I found is quite similar to the depiction of the Ood in Doctor Who - one brain thinking for an entire population. Wells is known for depicting and creating different types of utopian societies, which, as with our current societies, have faults. Possibly as a way to show that humanity may never agree on one particular political agenda.
Overall, The First Men on the Moon was an exciting book to read and is quite fast paced during the height of the story while Cavor and Bedford are exploring the Moon, but in my opinion it isn't as exemplary as the other books I've read by Wells.
