9 People You Want To Know Better!
Tagged by @johaerys-writes you beautiful ray of sunshine I love you!
Tagging you beautiful people: @pijulle @cowsonabus @bakerstreetbaggins @analeftthechat @18shadesofmay @amelioratea @laur-the-cat-prince @celesteablack @kaerwrites (only if you want to, if you don't want to, it's alright ☺️)
Three ships: (adgdjfh TF you mean only three) Patroclus/Achilles (The Song of Achilles), Laurent/Damen (Captive Prince Trilogy), Deeti/Kalua (The Ibis Trilogy)
First ship: Ah, well, it was a long time ago, you see. I remember a velociraptor used to live next door to me, nice chap, kept opening and closing doors for no reason though. Percy/Annabeth. I was obsessed, OBSESSED I say. I dove into the sea of fanfiction for the first time for them.
Last song: Arsonists Lullabye by Hozier. I had such a good sleep after listening to it. But the one that I make sure to play atleast once a day is Anthaathi by Govind Vasantha. Language is not a boundary, guys. Go listen to it.
Last TV show: I finished The Boys S4 E5. Unfortunately, sacrificing small children for speedy updates in my favourite fanfictions is a time-consuming process so I'm not sure when I'll finish it (they keep squirming all the time). Legend of Vox Machina. I've finished both seasons. Now I'm glued to Amazon Prime's YouTube channel, grabbing at the crumbs.
Currently reading: My Biology textbook. Ok jk you know I don't study. I finished rereading The God Of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. I reread Sea of Poppies (this made me hyperfixate on historical fiction). Finally finished The Godfather. Other than books? I've camped in AO3 indefinitely.
Currently watching: House MD. Just started. I'm a few episodes in. I'm absolutely in love with House's wit and dry humour. And the medical stuff in it is helpful too for studying. I'm making excuses but I really find it fun! (Trypanosoma , a protozoan, causes sleeping sickness)
Currently eating: Nothing. I had chapathi with dal curry and egg burji three hours ago though.
Currently craving: Schezwan Maggi. Schezwan Maggi. Schezwan Maggi. And a good, proper cup of chai.

mari do you have any hozier songs or lyrics that you relate to sam or like to imagine in relation to him? ♡
oh anon you're in for a treat (i hope)... i'm going through my whole playlist right now hehe... i'll probably miss some since i have to go to work in a bit, but i'll try to get what comes to me strongest and most naturally!
we can start with the hozier classic lol. take me to church — every sunday's gettin' more bleak, a fresh poison each week. we were born sick, you heard them say it. | i'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies. i'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife. offer me that deathless death. oh, good god, let me give you my life.
that you are — carve their lines into a curve, like blades. all i get to are mistakes half-made. leave the door ajar. but i'd be anywhere that you are.
swan upon leda — one more sweet boy to be butchered by men. but the gateway to the world was still outside the reach of him. would never belong to angels, had never belonged to men.
i, carrion (icarian) — while you're as heavy as the world that you hold your hands beneath. once i had wondered what was holdin' up the ground, but i can see that all along, love, it was you all the way down ... if you need to, lean your weight to me.
butchered tongue — so far from home to have a stranger call you "darling" and have your guarded heart be lifted like a child up by the hand, in some town that just means "home" to them. he deserves sweet things :((
cherry wine — this whole song is samruby to me @_@ her eyes and words are so icy, oh but she burns like rum on the fire. hot and fast and angry as she can be, i walk my days on a wire. | the way she tells me i'm hers and she is mine, open hand or closed fist would be fine. the blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine. | calls of guilty thrown at me, all while she stains the sheets of some other. | but I want it, it's a crime, that she's not around most of the time.
arsonist's lullabye — when i was a child, i heard voices. some would sing and some would scream.
almost (sweet music) — i'm almost me again, she's almost you. | i got some colour back. she thinks so, too. i laugh like me again, she laughs like you. (angsty fic where sam can't get over jess and hears her in your laugh)
who we are — all of it pretty much :,)
to be alone — never feel too good in crowds with folks around, when they're playing the anthems of rap culture loud. crude and proud creatures baying. all i've ever done is hide from our times when you're near me. honey, when you kill the lights and kiss my eyes, i feel like a person for a moment of my life.
nfwmb — when i first saw you, the end was soon. | ain't it a gentle sound, the rolling in the graces? ain't it like thunder under earth, the sound it makes? ain't it exciting you, the rumble where you lay. ain't you my baby? ain't you my baby? nothing fucks with my baby. nothing can get a good look at my baby. nothing fucks with my baby. nothing fucks with my baby. nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing. | if i was born as a blackthorn tree, i'd wanna be felled by you, held by you, fuel the pyre of your enemies.
anything but — if i was a riptide, i wouldn't take you out. i don't want to be anything, but i would do anything just to run away. i don't wanna be anything like this at all.
july — you can keep a dream in your mind only to fin it's the hope that was killing you. but you arrived like sunlight in the gloom and burned off the haze when the year was still new. keeping me going how you show up like july. | and you can got to work until you're a disaster, babe. build your temple, the sound, and stone. put in all of their time only to find, by the end, that your god has flown.
as it was — before the otherness came and i knew its name. the drug, the dark, the light, the flame.
and some whole songs : would that i, fare well, who we are, francesca, hymn to virgil (esp i'd walk through hell on living feet for you), de selby (part 1), abstract (psychopomp), like real people do, through me (the flood), nobody's soldier, first light, unknown/nth, first time, FROM EDENNNN T_T, foreigner's god
there's probably more but. i got tired and idk sam is just insanely hozier song coded to me so i already went overboard anyways LOL
how about you??? anything i missed?? hehe

I write and conceptualize story to music, so I’ve compiled a playlist of 30 Darkest Dungeon-specific songs that I listen to when writing (and subsequently re-writing) in no particular order, which I hope will help you set the vibe too. :+)
Names in bold are links for easy listening - tons of Hozier and Of Monsters and Men up ahead, five minute warning.
1. ‘Fire and the Flood’ - Vance Joy
If you listen to nothing else on this list, listen to this one - it’s the kind of song that’s made for movies about yearning. Folk influences, choruses of trumpets and vocal harmony, and instruments that are layered for a rich, resonant sound. This is the song I imagine Dismas and Reynauld horse-racing through a crowded outdoors market in the hamlet to, and the song I listened to nonstop freshman year when I first started writing The Myth of Sisyphus.
You're the fire and the flood And I'll always feel you in my blood Everything is fine When your hand is resting next to mine Next to mine You're the fire and the flood
The chorus is built around biblical allusions to the fire (the burning bush signifying first contact) and the flood (destruction of the first world), the beginning and end. Every line is similarly evocative of Darkest Dungeon in their simplicity (“I’ve been getting used to waking up with you,” etc.)
2. ‘Soldier, Poet, King’ - The Oh Hellos
By the title alone you can guess who this is for. Even the Guild quote for the Leper approaches these three things as the defining parts of his character (specifically it’s “a ruined man, a warrior, and a poet.”) This song coincidentally has an old world influence to it, with a Medieval Renaissance style from a guitar playing a lute-adjacent melody.
There will come a ruler Whose brow is laid in thorn Smeared with oil like David's boy, oh lei oh lai oh Lord Oh lei, oh lai, oh lei, oh Lord Smeared with oil like David's boy, oh lei oh lai oh Lord
To be smeared with oil is to be anointed by a prophet and thus chosen by god himself to be king, just as David was and his boy after him (presumably Solomon). There’s something strangely wistful about the imagery, which is just how I like my songs about bygone kings.
3. ‘Exit Hymn’ - Bear Attack!
This song is about the end of the world in a version where everyone simply stands together in silence watching, rather than having the masses swarming in panic.
Lovely shapes to the world descending, Brothers and sisters. Lovely shapes to the world descending, Brothers and sisters Mute.
It defies Lovecraftian horror, which is based on the premise that “common human laws and interests and emotions have no validity or significance in the vast cosmos-at-large” - it flies in the face of existential nihilism and the despair that it should bring us. That’s why I like this song for deaths in the end-boss fight; it also has a special place for other death-related ideas, like full-party wipes - entire teams of people vanishing into the dungeons, gone insane, holding hands while the darkness surrounds them.
It’s a bare song which has a sanctity to it, mostly just piano and rain and human voices. Just what you would hear at the end of the world.
More under the cut:
4. ‘Pursuit of Glory’ - Jhameel
This song is laid-back. It doesn’t have the Homeric intensity that some of the other songs here do - it’s a guy with a guitar and vocal harmony. By god is it a great piece of writing though (all of Jhameel’s older songs have that quality to them), and all of it is evocative of Darkest Dungeon.
So many eyes set on the path to glory Too many ties, friendship is for the lonely Can't still my heart, my tongue has tasted folly Thirsty for art, hungry for power and money
This is a song for everyone in the barracks, especially the ‘laundry list’ of people and their approaches to the pursuit of glory.
5. ‘Good Old Days’ - Macklemore (feat. Kesha)
This fucker put a Macklemore song in here. I did, yeah. It’s not even the only song with Kesha in it here (I’m sorry.)
It’s a sentimental pop song, and I am sentimental to a fault. This is Darkest Dungeon AMV material, and I always mishear one of the lines as “we were underground, loaded mercs in that 12-passenger van” so it’s here.
We've come so far, I guess I'm proud And I ain't worried about the wrinkles around my smile I've got some scars, I've been around I've felt some pain, I've seen some things, but I'm here now Those good old days
6. ‘Past Lives‘ - Kesha
Here it is, the other Kesha song - this was introduced to me by a good friend, also in a Darkest Dungeon context. There’s just something about the lovers spanning time trope and finding each other in one life to the next that is irresistible (for the obvious reason in the context of Darkest Dungeon.) It’s a soft song, totally out of place in Kesha’s typical discography, and has a line about losing someone to the crusades, so... you know.
There's just somethin' about you I know Started centuries ago though You see your kiss is like a lost ghost Only I would know But I, I keep on falling for you Time after time Time after time
7. ‘Viva la Vida’ - Coldplay
You cannot fight this. You know that this is the song for King Baldwin IV of Jerusalem, you know it is. Did you know the official name of this genre of music is “Baroque pop”? Yes, that means more songs like this exist. You will live with this information now.
Don’t fight it. Just let it wash over you.
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing Roman Cavalry choirs are singing Be my mirror, my sword and shield My missionaries in a foreign field For some reason I can't explain Once you go there was never, never an honest word And that was when I ruled the world
Mirror, sword, and shield, the three other members of his party, his missionaries in a foreign field. Thinking emoji. I typed that out so I wouldn’t have a repeat of the crab emoji incident.
8. ‘The Boxer’ - Jerry Douglas (feat. Mumford & Sons, Paul Simon)
Partly inspired by the Bible, Simon & Garfunkle’s ‘The Boxer’ is a folk rock song about poverty, loneliness, and homesickness. It’s written and sung in a style that’s strongly reminiscent of older times, and the final verse about its eponymous boxer is particularly powerful:
In the clearing stands a boxer And a fighter by his trade And he carries the reminders Of ev'ry glove that laid him down Or cut him till he cried out In his anger and his shame "I am leaving, I am leaving" But the fighter still remains
This is what I use for Dismas’ life leading into organized crime and his foolish abandonment of stable job prospects in a half-baked bid for fame, as well as being punched down over and over again but with nowhere else to go. That last part is widely applicable across the cast.
9. ‘I Will Wait’ - Mumford & Sons
I am but a simple man. I see 'folk rock' and add it to my Darkest Dungeon playlist. This song I use for Reynauld - it has that sort of “salt of the earth,” somewhat biblical humility in its choice of words and style.
Raise my hands Paint my spirit gold And bow my head Keep my heart slow
10. ‘Little Lion Man’ - Mumford & Sons
Have we not beaten this song to death yet? Can you blame us? This is the people’s song. We reserve it for all of our favorite fuck-up characters, as primal as Saturn devouring his son. We love this song. Jesus.
Tremble for yourself, my man, You know that you have seen this all before Tremble little lion man, You'll never settle any of your scores Your grace is wasted in your face, Your boldness stands alone among the wreck Now learn from your mother or else spend your days biting your own neck
The line about learning from your mother in particular is why I think of this song for Dismas’ introspection, but I also associate it with the Hellion.
11. ’From Eden’ - Hozier
There’s too much Hozier in my playlists. There is so much of it, and it’s all important to me, says the hoarder. There’s something about profoundly intimate folk music that I love, and god put folk, R&B, blues, and alt rock into a Vitamix for 45 seconds to make Hozier.
Honey you're familiar like my mirror years ago Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword Innocence died screaming, honey ask me I should know I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door
‘From Eden’ is, according to Hozier, about idolizing someone from a distance, written from the perspective of the devil “looking longingly at something he desires - for everything that he does not have.” I associate this song with the Grave Robber for its playfully nihilistic tone - Audrey does say something to the effect of being left for dead by high society and the affectionate bordering condescending address is on-brand.
12. ‘Cherry Wine’ - Hozier
‘Cherry Wine’ is unabashedly about domestic violence, and its sincerity is heartbreaking, the sanctification of the blood spilled in the name of keeping her.
The way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine.
This song is strongly tied to the Vestal for me.
13. ‘Work Song’ - Hozier
A song about unconditional love - heaven and hell were just words, indeed.
When my time comes around Lay me gently in the cold dark earth No grave can hold my body down I'll crawl home to her
I think of this song for both Dismas and the Abomination - it’s a song about love transcending spiritual and even physical need, complete devotion, but something about it is also not quite right. It’s morbid and excessive, self-pitying, and almost ugly in its sincerity.
14. ‘Sunlight’ - Hozier
The strong gospel influence with the choruses, church organ, religious fervor - I think it makes a great song for traveling scenes and church/altar scenes.
I had been lost to you, sunlight Flew like a moth to you, sunlight oh sunlight Oh, your love is sunlight Oh, your love is sunlight (sunlight, sunlight) But it is sunlight
15. ‘Arsonist’s Lullabye’ - Hozier
The gospel this time is paired with electric rock instrumentation. Something about the lamentation is unapologetic and matter-of-fact in its disturbing inclinations - this is Paracelsus’ song. Arguably representative of Bounty Hunter and Flagellant as well.
Now that I think about it, it’s great for Abomination as well. Damn.
All you have is your fire And the place you need to reach Don't you ever tame your demons But always keep 'em on a leash
16. ‘We Sink’ - Of Monsters and Men
Of Monsters and Men are closer to the indie rock/pop spectrum with influences of folk, with much less biblical influence and more folklore-inspired lyrics. They make for great trailer and action songs.
We are the sleepers, we bite our tongues We set the fire and we let it burn Through the dreamers, we hear the hum They say come on, come on, let's go So come on, come on, let's go
In Lovecraft’s Cthulu mythos, dreams are how the Old Ones commune with humans on the earth’s surface while they slumber in the ocean depths (Cthulhu fhtagn meaning “Cthulhu is dreaming”); I like to think of the ‘sleepers’ as the heroes being tasked to “set the fire” and the ‘dreamers’ being the Heir and Ancestor driven by some unseen force to unearth the antediluvian underground.
17. ‘I Of The Storm’ - Of Monsters and Men
Very somber song, overwhelmingly piano and snare drum and vocals. Also a great death scene song, or for introspection around the campfire, or played to reveal a major event.
If I could face them If I could make amends With all my shadows I'd bow my head And welcome them
18. ‘King and Lionheart’ - Of Monsters and Men
My favorite OMAM song - it’s clearly written about two children, kind of reminiscent of ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ in its fantastical nature, and very upbeat about the end of the world.
His crown lit up the way as we moved slowly Pass the wondering eyes of the ones that were left behind Though far away, though far away, though far away We're still the same, we're still the same, we're still the same
This part is reminiscent of the Leper’s journey, but the mentions of taking over a town, howling ghosts, the end of the world, a black sea and creatures lurking below, etc. are all evocative of Darkest Dungeon.
19. ‘Little Talks’ - Of Monsters and Men
Also very upbeat for its subject matter - according to OMAM, it’s a narrative of a woman speaking with the ghost of her dead husband, or going insane and believing that she’s speaking with her dead husband.
Some days I don't know if I am wrong or right Your mind is playing tricks on you, my dear 'Cause though the truth may vary This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore
The call-and-respond style of the song is haunting. I like this song for expeditions and afflicted heroes.
20. ‘Wolves Without Teeth’ - Of Monsters and Men
Suitable for both Occultist and Abomination, being consumed by an unseen and otherworldly force that inhabits them - well, maybe just rarely seen, in the Abomination’s case. Special mention to OMAM’s ‘Human,’ same conceptual backing but more raw.
You hover like a hummingbird Haunt me in my sleep You're sailing from another world Sinking in my sea, oh You're feeding on my energy I'm letting go of it He wants it
21. ‘Desierto’ (Original Motion Picture Score) - Woodkid
This is a full album, because all of it is dark orchestral cinema music described as ‘unsettling,’ with the sole exception of ‘Land of All,’ which has vocals to it. I reserve this album for writing fight scenes and for particularly unsettling events because it’s tense and wordless. I read Junji Ito to this soundtrack too, it’s insanely high-strung and discordant.
22. ‘Iron’ - Woodkid
‘Iron’ qualifies as Baroque pop - you might recognize this as the Assassin’s Creed: Revelations song. The large-scale, cinematic style of it and thematic lyrics make it great for writing about dramatic encounters or brigands.
This deadly burst of snow is burning my hands I'm frozen to the bones, I am A million miles from home, I'm walking away I can't recall your eyes, your face
23. ‘Never Let You Down’ - Woodkid (feat. LYKKE LI)
Another somber song, orchestral with some industrial noise in the mix - another great introspection song, or one for a scene with some hard decisions to be made.
Will you come along cause I'm about to leave this town In my eyes, a waterfall, all I can hear, a siren call Could you be waiting by the shore, oh I could drown without you Will you be holding out the line when I fall?
24. ‘Run Boy Run’ - Woodkid
Church bells, fast percussion, strong orchestral presence. For chase scenes, obviously, but great for fast-paced sneaking scenes as well. Also has a strong quasi-Medieval fantasy setting style to it.
Tomorrow is another day And you won't have to hide away You'll be a man, boy! But for now it's time to run, it's time to run!
25. ‘I Love You’ - Woodkid
Don’t let the scream effects and aggressive percussion at the beginning deter you (it kind of took me by surprise the first few times too) - it soon fades into more of the church bells and melodic string accompaniment.
Oh yeah, unrequited love song? It’s free (mental) real estate, baby.
Is there anything I could do Just to get some attention from you? In the waves, I've lost every trace of you Where are you?
26. ‘Vagabonds’ - Grizfolk
A rare departure from folk! Grizfolk is alt rock/indie pop. Stylistically it doesn’t match the feeling of Darkest Dungeon, but lyrically it’s almost 1:1 to arrival in the hamlet and the subsequent expeditions. Good song for writing about recruits bonding.
Oh this careless ground, guessing this is home now Oh in no man's land, at least we're still standing And we're all just fighting, some of us will not return And there's no redemption in trying to find your way out
27. ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ - Lorde
Great trailer fuel, if you’ve seen the AC: Unity E3 trailer with this song - I listen to an extended version when writing fights in the Guild, especially one where two heroes are beefing. It’s got a primal kind of thing going on. I also associate this song with the Arbalest - lyrically, it fits her backstory like a glove.
Welcome to your life There's no turning back Even while we sleep We will find you
Acting on your best behavior Turn your back on mother nature
28. ‘Torches’ - X Ambassadors
More alt rock/indie pop - kind of a rallying song for dark expeditions, hopeful but still somber in nature - some gospel elements. X Ambassadors’ more popular ‘Renegades’ is also a fun tavern song.
Come on, carry your flame Carry it higher Leave it in the darkness Carry your torches
29. ‘Passing Afternoon’ - Iron & Wine
This is a song I use for reconciliation or domestic scenes - Dismas with Junia in the garden, for example. It’s soft and kind of meandering, and features vintage piano - you know, the piano you heard in the basement of your church turned community center as a child.
There are times that walk from you like some passing afternoon Summer warmed the open window of her honeymoon And she chose a yard to burn but the ground remembers her Wooden spoons, her children stir her Bougainvillea blooms
30. ‘Some Nights’ - Fun.
You know this song, your mom knows this song, everyone knows this song from like, middle school. Thought it’d be fun to end this list on an uplifting and very popular song. This is the song that a Disney adaptation of Darkest Dungeon would use in the Training Montage™ - from the point of view of Reynauld. It hits all of the points - being their commander rather than their equal, his stern and antisocial zealotry with no true ideology behind it, the ghost of his wife.
Verse 2, starting with “Well, that is it, guys, that is all / Five minutes in and I'm bored again” is where I see it transitioning to Dismas.
Well, some nights, I wish that this all would end 'Cause I could use some friends for a change And some nights, I'm scared you'll forget me again Some nights, I always win (I always win) But I still wake up, I still see your ghost Oh Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for, oh What do I stand for? What do I stand for? Most nights, I don't know
_____
Well that’s all from me! Feel free to leave your own recommendations in the replies, and I’d love to know what you think about my personal picks. :+)

✧*:・゚✧ merlin! is that BOB MORLEY? no, it’s just EDWARD TED TONKS the SEVENTH YEAR RAVENCLAW ( MUGGLEBORN ). we’ve heard rumors that HE ( CIS MALE ) is INDEPENDENT, CONFIDENT & HONEST but can also be very GUARDED, SARCASTIC & CRITICAL. if i had to pick one song to describe HIM it would be ARSONIST’S LULLABYE BY HOZIER.
Tumblr media
history
Grew up in Dartford with his parents, not particularly well off. His childhood was simple, he was not spoilt as a child. He climbed any tree taller than himself, wrestled in his backyard with friends, ran parallel to the tracks down the length of Dartford, and came home with scraped knees, dirt in his hair and a cheshire grin from ear to ear.
Affectionately termed a rapscallion by his parents, there was not much that could stop Ted once he had conjured an idea. How he applied his optimism landed him in a fair bit of trouble as a youngster, sometimes resulting in being dragged home by the lobe of his ear to his parents doorstep. Even at a young age, he was ‘rebellious’. His parents had afforded him a strong sense of self and individuality, which facilitated the rise of his self determination. A strength that has formed part of the core of his very being.
When it came to being introduced to magic, limitations like Gamp’s Law, age restrictions on apparition, the difficulty of wandless magic, the limits on the floo network, the limit of what magic could do to stimulate greater change, they brought his imagination crashing back to the ground. He has since come to terms with such limitations, and the realistic nature of their existence. He cannot tell Gamp’s Law to piss off, no matter how he tries. It was one of the first experiences that truly left him disappointed.
quirks
Watches Rugby Union, supports the Lions (England)
Couldn’t give less of a damn about Quidditch, but if he did play, he’d be a beater along with Jess
Wears a leather jacket unironically
Cannot stand disco music
Smokes handrolled cigarettes and drinks on occasion
Hustles Wizard’s Chess in his spare time
A terrible Ravenclaw, tells the Eagle where it can shove its riddle when it asks him.
Never has assignments done ahead of time
Does the bare minimum in classes but has passable grades
Adores classic Muggle literature, can often be found with a soft cover classic in his back pocket.
Fluent in snark
Gets caught out of bed at night, perched somewhere reading at night. Often by Emmeline Vance (and later, Andromeda Black)
His idea of a good time is sitting with comfortable silence. He shares those great times with Moody.
personality traits
Very much apathetic on the surface.
Restrained in how he shows emotions, simply due to his guarded nature.
Passes judgement pretty quickly on Purebloods with privilege
Isn’t afraid to tell it how it is, very direct
Chaotic Neutral alignment I have a long ass bio, headcanons ect
I can link to but I don’t want to make you all sit through that but if you’re interested just hmu.
wanted connections
Pretty much anyone who is going to give him a hard time being a muggleborn
Muggleborn friends!! Jess and Lily are part of his muggleborn squad who love to reminisce
Ex-friends!! Ted started as a starry eyed first year and has become a cold and distant presence in the halls so I’m all for people who stayed for the ride, or ditched when he changed
Classmates! Students who get annoyed with his apathy toward his studies
Perhaps one or two friends he keeps close, but be prepared for the distance he tries to maintain
Perhaps ex-romantic connections
Anyone who wants to try and recruit him for the quidditch team bc his rugby and cricket experience has set him up with the base skills for being a beater
I’m pretty open for wcs so if you have a wc you think Ted could fit just point me in that direction and I’ll more than likely say yes

okay, answering a few extremely spoiler heavy asks below!
and, perhaps importantly - there’s art >v> so if you’ve played [Soul Redacted] and would like a deeper peek into those most heavily tied to the end of the game, check out below the cut! <3
everyone else - AVERT THINE EYES, YA CUTIES. i cannot stress enough how spoiler heavy this stuff is (;・∀・)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
first off, bless all of you, i love you guys so much XD and @ut-stuff, seriously - i made the most delighted of noises when i saw your ask because i cannot tell you how excited i am that anyone noticed those little details-!! seriously i chose all those things very specifically and actually spent a lot of time considering their designs, so i’m so happy you mentioned it TvT
and alright, the rest of this post will be addressing your general questions and more on the Gasters! <3
first off: sweet sweet Void men in color reference
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in order, of course, we have Gaster, Dings, The Doctor aka Doc, and WD.
why are Dings and WD shirtless, you ask, @with-a-whisper?
because they always are.
as for their relationships with their respective bros, the Gasters are all the middle brother.
shhhh anyone reading this i know i know the most popular Gaster hc is him as their dad but Gasters are so loosely canon anyways that listen this is a delightful hc to work with i have no shame
a few things all the Gasters have in common:
-former Royal Scientist (of course) -middle of the skeleton brothers -Gaster & Doc’s Sanses and Dings & WD’s Papyruses went to work multiple jobs not even in their field after their own scientific studies to support their middle brothers going through extensive schooling -in the end, the science bros & their Gasters worked together in the Royal Lab -all of them breach 7 feet tall
and, bonus:
both Doc G and WD are missing their right arms.
and, individually, some fun facts about these nerds:
Gaster:
- every coffee he drinks has at least 3 spoons of sugar and so much cream - the most mechanically inclined of the above 4 - his favorite story genre is comedic soap operas/foreign ‘dramas’ - once visited Sans at one of his jobs to bring him a surprise lunch at one of his jobs in the Capital, since Sans tended to skip it - he found him being harassed by some monsters who were calling him a dropout and a failure. Sans was ignoring it in a way that said he was clearly used to it... Gaster had never moved so fast in his life, his magic summoning to form a wall and verbally tearing the assholes apart in the most pleasant voice and cutting gaze they’d ever know. - first experimented with Determination injects to try and save Undyne (his classmate and friend) and her mother when the two were trapped in a cave-in - her mother didn’t survive, but he stabilized the less-grievously wounded Undyne enough to prevent her from Falling (and giving her her eyepatch/ability to be ‘the Undying’), but her subsequent ‘powersurge’ of magical release destroyed his lab and notes, forcing him to start everything from scratch. - interestingly enough, he’s the most sly of the 4 - he’s a genuine guy and very charming, but he’s also got a mischievous streak a mile wide~ - the only one who has been able to outpun Sans on more than one occasion - a song that suits his taste and personality: Two Evils by Bastille
Dings:
- he loves all things citrus and sour candy - the most technically (programming, etc) inclined of the 4 - y’know my fond concept of echoflower brownies? .... yeah, he was known for them. figured out the best way to use echoflowers medicinally overall, and was pleasantly surprised by his side findings for their recreational uses as well XD - he used to always wear an orange hoodie... until one day, Stretch came home to their tiny rundown studio apartment in the Capital, carrying Blue on his back after he arrived in time to stop Blue from getting hurt by some vicious bullies. Stretch’s favorite sweater was torn to hell and back - without hesitation, once Blue was settled in to rest, Dings gave Stretch his hoodie, and wouldn’t have it back - saying he’d win a bet with a fellow intern at the lab if he showed up shirtless anyways, and he’d be able to buy them more clothes. - (he did buy Stretch and Blue new outfits, but ended up finding he quite liked walking around shirtless/with an open labcoat. Stretch, meanwhile, has always kept his hoodie, even when Blue didn’t remember Dings anymore and kept asking why he wouldn’t just get himself a new one/initially tried to gift a new sweater instead, the first Gyftmas after Dings was scattered across space-time.) - interestingly enough, the most fiercely protective of his brothers and whomever could count themselves among his friends; seriously, he’s the most chill guy until you go after one of the ones he cares for. just... just don’t do it, unless you wish to find yourself facing death (or significant misfortune, rather) a little too incarnate. - a song that suits his taste and personality: Ways to Fake it by CRX
Doc:
- he created an absinthe-esque liquor for Fellby using echoflowers - it is the most potent alcohol sold in the Underground, and the finest - and his favorite. - the most strategically & innovatively inclined of the 4 - he was there the day Edge got the scars on his face - Sans came to save them both from getting dusted by a local gang in the Capital, nearly getting killed himself in the process, and was forced to dust every single one of the other monsters... including a former friend of his. Doc G swore that day that he’d rise to a position that would never allow his brothers to be touched again. - he lost his arm in an accident when he wouldn’t heed Red’s warnings about pushing himself too hard after they were working together - he made a miscalculation and the experiment backfired, leading him and Red to breach the experimentation with Determination injection to keep him from turning to dust. it stabilized him, but his arm was permanently lost, and Red sacrificed his own HP to better stabilize his brother’s soul in the process without Doc knowing as he had lost consciousness during the injection process. - never forgave himself for his brother’s lost HP, and in secret, tore himself apart trying to find a way to give Red some of his HP back - but Red never told him how he managed it, and refused regardless, always diverting the topic with dark jokes and dirty puns. - interestingly, the most gentlemanly of the 4 post-Void - even Gaster is second to him, because while he’s often more aloof and a little fiery outside of that, he has impeccable manners and a stoic charm that is hard to deny. (his closest friends see his fiery temper and passionate side more often, however) - a song that suits his taste and personality: Arsonist’s Lullabye by Hozier
WD:
- is such a sucker for spiced meads that he recultivated an entire lost farming landscape deep within the caves to allow the monsters to farm again, preventing a famine amidst the growing violence (and securing a crop for his Grillby to end up producing related liquors and creating WD’s favorite drink) - is the most soul-inclined of the above 4 - he was the closest to fully creating artificial soul type technology, or rather - a way to fully prevent monsters from falling, and to potentially create an energy source that would destroy the barrier - the scientific division of the Underground was combined with the Guard (aka, military-esque) - his magic, however, was not as violently-inclined as many other monsters, so as he worked through scientific internships with far greater speed than others thought he should, he faced increasing violent retribution from jealous peers - Black received his facial scars when he came to collect his brother before going shopping for food, and he jumped in the way of an attack and defended his brother. they escaped, and Russ aligned every one of his breaks from that day onwards to ensure he would be there to walk with his brothers... and he also tracked down each and every one of the attackers and ensured they’d never be able to do so again. - when WD found out who was trailing and beating up Black, threatening to kill him, they disappeared... and he happened to obtain the first souls he experimented with to truly study and test his theories. - he lost his arm when he and Russ were cornered in the Capital after a three-day shift at the lab, their magic weakened for their exhaustion - Russ diverted the attack from being a killing blow, getting his facial scar in the process, but WD still lost his arm - thus their first foray into Determination injections. Russ never forgave himself for not being quick enough thanks to his exhaustion - thus his habit of being ever-vigilant even when he appears aloof, and his nap-taking habit - any few minutes give him a sliver of a chance to make the difference that could save his brothers from further pain. - over time, WD became known to not be crossed, he and his brothers alike - anyone who did disappeared, and without any form of investigation once WD secured his position as Royal Scientist. - suave as hell, and actually extremely adept at reading emotions and more, his skill and inclination towards it helping him in his study of souls/etc - if you’re close to him, he’s actually an incredible friend, and if something’s wrong, he’ll know immediately. - curiously, by far the best in all ranges of social interaction post-Void, out of the 4; uses emotional skills and flirtatious humor consistently. - a song that suits his taste and personality: Twisted by MISSIO
aaaaand alright, i’ll stop there for now! oof, that was definitely probably more than you were looking for, but hopefully not too much X) <3 hope you guys like these tall handsome nerds and my headcanons for them!

The two weeks leading up to the party went far too fast for (Y/N)’s taste but she had to admit that she was also glad this whole ordeal with her father was almost over as she looked in the mirror to pin on the drop chain ruby earrings that had come with her dress and shoes. She remembered wearing this pair for her seventeenth birthday, along with the small heart shaped ruby necklace that belonged to her late mother that her father had also included in the package.
After putting on her jewelry she leaned in close to the mirror and made sure her make up was still flawless. The deep matte red she’d painted onto her lips was a stain so it, at least, wouldn’t come off easy. Her cream eyeliner on the other hand may have smudged a little. She turned her face this way and that but luckily the sharp winged tips were still crisp and clean. And so was the edge of her smokey eye-shadow. She touched up her blush a little before leaving the bathroom and walking over to the giant box on the foot of her bed.
She reached into the massive gift box and pulled out a shoe box. She lifted the lid and snorted at the ridiculous heels. They looked like Dorthy’s ruby slippers. If Dorthy had been a stripper. The height alone--if they didn’t topple her--would put her eye to eye with Mitch, maybe even a little taller with their platform bottoms. And they were absolutely covered in red glitter and sparkles, with a cut out for her toes.
Her father had also included nail polish for her to apply. Luckily she’d done her toes that morning too since she thought the color was so pretty.
The heels’ only saving grace: they didn’t have a strap which meant that (Y/N) could wear the silver station and sliding bead anklet that Mitch had bought her for their one month anniversary.
They hadn’t even discussed exchanging gifts, even though she’d bought him a personalized jersey of his favorite baseball team, it was just that they were on the same wavelength it seemed.
When he’d given her the anklet she’d put it on and then proceeded to thank him with a round of passionate sex. Now whenever she wore it he’d tell her how he’d remember just how much she liked it and he’d be turned on for at least an hour.
She wrapped the small chain around her ankle and secured the clasp before going over to the dress that hung on the back of her bathroom door. It fit with her theme of ruby red, and she slipped off the bath robe she’d been wearing in order to put it on.
She’d just gotten the small zipper at her side done up when her front door opened and closed. She’d given Mitch a key to her apartment the day after they’d had dinner with her father, and he’d given her a key to his place.
“(Y/N), you almost ready? We should be heading over soon.” Mitch called from her living room.
“Don’t worry, I’m done.” She promised as she opened her bedroom door. She was greeted by the sight of Mitch in a perfectly fitted tux when he turned around to look at her. She’d seen him in it a few days earlier when he’d tried it on to make sure it fit well, but she still hadn’t gotten used to how handsome he looked. It was intensified by the fact that his hair was pushed back off of his face and he’d trimmed up the scruff on his chin.
She felt herself flush when she looked at his amber eyes and found them slowly making their way up her body.
“That dress is......” He puffed out a breath, unable to put into words how truly phenomenal she looked. The straps of the gown were twisted loosely and spread out as they went down to cover her chest, giving her a neckline that plunged to just before her navel where the fabric came back together via a thick band of material that cut across her stomach, sectioning the top off from the skirt of the dress. The skirt was made with lots of loose fabric that draped flawlessly down her legs, giving her an ethereal, billowing, effect when she walked.
“You haven’t even seen the back yet.” She teased.
“Show it to me then.” He challenged, She grinned, gathered her skirts in her hand so she wouldn’t trip, and spun until she faced away from him, showing off the fact that the top tied around her neck and left her back completely bare down to her waist. Not even her hair was obstructing the view, as it was twisted up into a complex looking bun, with only small wispy curls spiraling down to frame her face. “Fuck me.” She heard him mutter.
“Maybe later, if I did it now we’d end up running late and my make up and hair would be ruined.” She teased, turning back around and grabbing her glittering red clutch purse from the couch as she passed. “Come on.” She called when he still hadn’t moved.
“Maybe we could say that you got sick.” He only half-joked. She smiled.
“There will be plenty of time to maul each other later. I’d like to get this over with so my father doesn’t bother us again.” She requested.
“Party pooper.” He muttered, making her laugh.
“If you suffer with me through tonight I’ll give you a blowjob in the car on the way home.” She promised. His eyes dropped to her lips before looking back up at her.
“What the fuck are we waiting for, let’s get going.” He said quickly as he grabbed the door for her. She laughed and stepped through, heading down the hall to the elevator. She paused when she didn’t hear any foot falls behind her and half turned to find Mitch just standing there staring after her.
“C’mon. The sooner we get there the sooner we can leave.” She smiled.
“Right.” He muttered, striding up to her quickly. “I’m gonna die, that dress is going to kill me all night.” He accused.
“If you die then you can’t fuck me.” She pointed out as she pressed the elevator call button.
“True. Fine, I’ll fight valiantly to stay alive.” He joked.
“My hero.” She laughed and stepped inside the empty lift. Mitch followed closely behind and pressed the button for the parking garage beneath the building. The doors closed and (Y/N) felt him staring at her as she leaned against the back railing. She was just about to ask what he wanted when he spoke up.
“Is your lipstick going to smudge?” He asked.
“It’s lip stain.” She corrected.
“Meaning?”
“Meaning, no it won’t smu-” He cut her off with a hard kiss as he pressed her up against the back wall of the small space. She moaned softly against his lips and wrapped her arms around his neck as his hands pressed into her back to keep her up against him.
DING
“Not our floor?” He guessed, going by the irritated frown on her face. She shook her head and pouted when he pulled back to stand beside her respectably.
A man appeared in the doorway of the elevator and froze when he took in (Y/N) standing before him.
“Are you getting on or not?” Mitch asked, irritated that he kept staring at his girlfriend. The guy stumbled onto the elevator and blindly pressed the button for the garage floor, making (Y/N) groan internally. Now she’d have to deal with being gawked at until they got into their car.
“That’s a beautiful necklace.” The guy complimented. She barely refrained from rolling her eyes, knowing his compliment had nothing to do with her jewelry and everything to do with it being conveniently placed at the start of her cleavage. She wished the chain had been shorter than twenty inches.
The elevator stopped again and an older couple got on, hitting the button for the ground floor. (Y/N) smiled politely at them before Mitch pulled her to him and kissed her tamely enough for the presence of others.
“Fancy date tonight?” The woman asked, breaking them apart.
“Something like that.” (Y/N) said after clearing her throat delicately. “My father is hosting a gala and asked me to attend. My boyfriend graciously agreed to be tortured along with me.” She smiled at him.
“Oh how cute. How long have you two been dating?” She asked.
“A little over a month.” Mitch answered.
“I would have thought longer.” She mused.
“Steph, leave those poor people alone.” The woman’s husband chuckled.
“Shut up, Ed, they don’t mind. Do you?” She asked.
“Not at all.” (Y/N) assured with a smile. “But this is your floor.” She said apologetically. She watched as they got off and then rode the last floor down. She noticed that ever since Mitch had kissed her, the guy from before had stopped staring.
“Have a nice night.” He muttered blandly after the doors opened and (Y/N) pulled Mitch out into the parking garage.
“How soon can we leave again?” Mitch whispered in her ear half way through the dinner after someone asked him what he did for the tenth time. They had arrived at Anthony’s giant house and had been ushered around back where tables were set up around a giant dance floor and stage that hosted a DJ, ready to play music once everyone finished their dinner.
(Y/N) smiled and squeezed his arm reassuringly.
“We have to make it through dinner and at least three dances. Sorry, we’re gonna be here a bit yet.” She whispered back. “Just remember, it’ll be worth it.” She teased.
“Why do you think I’m in such a hurry?” He shot back. She grinned at him before her attention was pulled back to the elderly woman across the table from her who kept rambling on about her cat.
Mitch watched (Y/N) navigate the conversation with ease, her hand reaching out and picking up her wine glass to bring to her lips for a delicate sip. She looked like she belonged in this kind of scene with the grace she displayed. Even the way she ate spoke of class and sophistication. And he wanted to laugh because this was nothing like her.
She wasn’t a prim and proper lady-like type. She was a girl who was fiercely competitive about bowling of all things, who could drop a man twice her size to his knees with two hits, and she ate a burger like it was the first and last thing she’d ever consume.
To see her cut off a small piece of chicken, lift it to her mouth and delicately pull the tongs along her lips as her teeth pulled the morsel off of them, it was like someone else had inhabited her body.
“Mitch, stop staring at me and eat.” She murmured, side eyeing him with amusement.
“I’m just not used to seeing you so...”
“Refined?”
“I was going to compare you to a pod-person but sure.” She covered her mouth with her napkin to hide her sudden laughter.
“Just eat.” She giggled. “The sooner you finish, the sooner we can go dance, and the sooner we can leave.” She listed.
“Okay, okay.” He agreed before turning back to his meal.
(Y/N) finished her meal first and the second she put her knife and fork down on her plate a waiter was there to clear the dishes away. She thanked him and then turned her head as a hand tapped her shoulder.
“Hello Peter.” She greeted un-enthusiastically, looking up at the thin dark haired man.
“Hello, (Y/N). I was wondering if you’d be kind enough to join me for a dance?” He asked.
“I’m not sure-”
“Oh please, just one? It’s been so long since I’ve seen you.” He urged. She sighed.
“Just one.” She said firmly and he grinned, offering a hand to help her stand up. Mitch watched them walk over to the dance space. A couple other couples had gotten up to start dancing and mingling and the DJ had begun playing some ballroom music.
Peter danced with (Y/N) and it was clear that he was trying to impress her but instead he kept making both of them stumble as he either tripped or stepped wrong. She constantly glanced over Mitch’s way, clearly hoping he’d save her and he chuckled before abandoning his unfinished meal to go rescue his girlfriend.
“Mind if I cut in?” He asked, placing a hand on Peter’s shoulder.
“I guess I can’t say no to the boyfriend, can I?” The other man grumbled. Mitch grinned and took (Y/N)’s hand to pull her into his arms as the song morphed into another. He placed his hand on the small of her back while hers went to his shoulder and he followed the steps of a simple waltz as he spun with her around the floor.
“You told me you couldn’t dance.” She reminded him.
“I couldn’t dance the way you wanted me to at the club, no. But I know a simple waltz.” He replied.
“Where’d you learn?” She wondered.
“Middle school. All middle school kids have to suffer through that damned dance circuit.” He grinned.
“If you got your skill from middle school we’d be stuck dancing in a box.” She sassed.
“Okay, so my parents may or may not have expanded my knowledge. They met at a ballroom dance class.” He shrugged.
“Aww, how cute.” She smiled.
“What about you?” He asked.
“Really? With my upbringing, you’re asking how I know how to ballroom dance?” She teased.
“Point taken.” He chuckled, letting go of her waist and twirling her under his arm. Her skirts flared out around her before catching on his pant-leg as they reconnected and continued moving around the floor.
“People are starting to stare at us.” (Y/N) noticed idly, glancing around at all the people who were simply shuffling back and forth as they watched the pair work the floor.
“Then let them stare. They’re envious.” He shrugged.
“Of me?” She snorted.
“Of me, simply because I’m the lucky bastard who gets to dance with you.” He smiled when she tossed her head back and laughed. “I was serious, you know.” He murmured.
“Oh please. It’s just because I’m wearing make up and a fancy dress. Half of these people wouldn’t give me a second glance if they saw me in my gym attire.” She snorted.
“I would.” He promised.
“You did.” She pointed out with a smile.
“And you’re gorgeous no matter what. Whether you’re covered in sweat from kicking ass in the gym, or if you’re wearing this knock out dress.” He stopped them at the edge of the floor as the song ended and they heard applause from a few people for their performance, making them both laugh. (Y/N) waved quickly in thanks before turning back to Mitch.
“Another dance?” She asked as a slower song began to play.
“Anything for you.” He agreed, pulling her close and swaying them softly to the rhythm. She rested her cheek against the lapel of his coat and closed her eyes as she moved with him.
“(Y/N)?” Mitch asked softly after a moment. She hummed, not wanting to move from her spot just yet. “I’ve been thinking...”
“About?” She prompted when he didn’t continue. He hesitated and she pulled back to look at him curiously.
“Do you want to move in with me?” He asked. Her mouth dropped open into a surprised little ‘o’. “It’s just... You said my apartment felt cozy, like home to you, and we’ve been spending more time together late-”
“Yes.” She agreed quickly, shutting him up. “I’d love that.” She beamed at him and he smiled back before kissing her quickly.
“We’ll get packing supplies tomorrow morning and start sorting everything out.” He suggested and she nodded eagerly, happy tears springing to her eyes. She quickly dabbed her fingers under her eyes with an embarrassed laugh.
“I’m going to go to the bathroom and make sure nothing smears.” She giggled, kissing him again quickly before walking off the floor and heading inside the house.
She was walking back out, nearly floating on cloud nine over the fact that she was going to be moving in with her boyfriend, when a woman in a gold dress stopped her in the hall.
“I saw you and your boyfriend dancing, you two are so perfect. Ah, I miss being young. Congratulations by the way, can I see it?” She asked.
“See what?” (Y/N) asked. The woman looked at her perplexed expression and put a hand to her mouth in embarrassment.
“Oh, oops, don’t mind me dear!” She laughed, trying to play off her slip.
“No, wait, what are you talking about?” She demanded. The older woman looked around and leaned in close.
“Well I saw you head inside, and then your boyfriend and your father came in too, a minute later. I assumed.... Well I thought he was asking permission to propose to you tonight.” She said, sounding abashed.
“My father took Mitch into the house?” (Y/N) demanded. She felt dread come over her as her mind replied what her father had threatened two weeks ago.
“If you don’t stop seeing him on your own I’ll be forced to protect you, like how I protected you when you were eighteen.”
She felt herself pale slightly at the thought.
“Do you know where they went?” She asked hurriedly.
“No dear, I’m sorry. Do you not love him?” The woman asked.
“No, I do love him, that’s the problem.” She said as she grabbed the skirt of her dress and started running down the hall. She started opening doors at random, looking for her father and, more importantly, Mitch.
She had to have checked a dozen rooms, and with each empty one her sense of dread grew and weighed her stomach down, sinking it slowly to her feet as she raced upstairs and began looking there.
She got to the top of the stairs and heard the sickening thud of a foot connecting with a body. She ran towards the sound and burst into an office.
Mitch was on the floor, coughing from the blow that Anthony had delivered to his ribs, when he heard (Y/N) scream his name.
“Anthony don’t!” She shouted when he pulled his fist back and brought it down against Mitch’s cheek. “Stop it!” She raced forward and grabbed at his shoulder but he shoved her off. She tripped over the hem of her dress and stumbled into the desk, sending things skittering off of it as she fell to the floor.
“It’s for your own good you stupid child!” He snarled, landing another kick to Mitch’s stomach. He grunted and rolled to his back, and (Y/N) desperately grabbed her father’s leg before he could stomp down on his chest.
“Please!” She begged. The back of his hand came down across her cheek and she fell back to the floor. “Daddy!” She screamed, but it did nothing. She searched around frantically for something to get him to stop his assault, and her fingers touched a cold bit of metal. She gripped the handle tightly in both quivering hands, adrenaline making her body shake, and scrambled to her feet.
“Leave him alone!” She shrieked, rushing forward and plunging the blade of the letter opener to the hilt in his chest. She jolted when she felt warmth seep across her fingers and saw the crimson stain of blood begin to spread out over his pristine white dress shirt.
Anthony tipped back and she released the handle of the letter opener, watching in horror as her father fell with a thud onto the plush carpeting. (Y/N) stumbled back a step, tripping over her gown and falling onto her butt, unable to take her eyes off of the unmoving form before her.
