What is "Void"?
Library of Circlaria
Blog Posts
Basic Definition
"Void" is a byproduct from the hubstone industry serving as an ideal lighter-than-air substance in numerous industries.
Context
There are numerous hubstone structures throughout the Circlarian Realm each of which contains two components: the core and the web. In Combria, the core is mostly spherical and 100 feet in diameter while the web, made of shale, covers most of the province of Combria. This is just one example of a core-and-web structure, with many others bearing wildly different appearances and size proportions. But for the sake of explaining "void," focus will be given on the Combria structure.
Combria has one of the largest hubstone energy production structures in the world, and begins the process by extracting webstone shale in the form of gas and pipelining it to the Central Hubstone Energy Generation Terminal in Jestopole. There, the shale gas is ignited and superheats the Core in the Central Hubstone Core Chamber. Adapters attached to the Core then conduct the resulting electricity produced to charge hubstone batteries of numerous sizes serving a variety of purposes including the powering of homes and businesses, as well as the powering of numerous appliances.
The Core-superheating process creates three byproducts. The first of which is waste-sludge, a mixture of spent hubstone and water. The second byproduct is electricity, which is produced when the spellfire particles from the Core are split into charged particles and uncharged anti-particles. It is obviously the charged particles that release the energy in the form of electricity. These charged particles are unstable, meaning that once they have served their purpose, the energy released disperses accordingly throughout its immediate environment while the resulting shell of the former charged particle attracts to and integrates with other forms of matter.
"Void"
The third byproduct is the uncharged anti-particles, a large amount of which constitute what is called "void." The reason "void" floats is because it repels every other particle except for charged spellfire particles. As a result, "void" rises up, seeking equilibrium above the atmosphere, where there is no air pressure, as there is no matter to repel there.
This had been considered a waste product until engineers in Combria in the late 1000s, early 1100s, found a method to contain it. Since then, "void" has been considered a valuable commodity, being able to provide better buoyancy than even hydrogen or helium. Thus, "void" was paramount in the development of modern airships in the centuries to come, and, since the obsoletion of airships, has served as an important component in altitude control for gyroplanes.

"Heralding a New Era: The Promise and Potential of Fusion Energy
Imagine a bustling city like Paris, known as "The City of As a lifelong learner and passionate advocate for clean energy, I've always been captivated by the power of the stars. Imagine if we could harness that immense power right here on Earth—this isn't just science fiction. It's the potential of fusion energy, a revolutionary yet elusive power source that could redefine our energy landscape. Let's dive into what fusion energy is, how it works, its current status, promising future, and the incredible benefits it holds for us all.
What is Fusion Energy?
Fusion energy is the process that powers the sun and other stars. Simply put, fusion is the joining of two light atomic nuclei to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a tremendous amount of energy in the process. Imagine taking two tiny hydrogen atoms and fusing them to make helium—it's like merging two drops of water into one, but with the added reward of bursting out massive energy.
How is Fusion Energy Created?
Creating fusion energy on Earth is like trying to bottle a miniature star. Here's a simplified rundown of the process:
Fuel: Fusion primarily uses isotopes of hydrogen, such as deuterium and tritium, which are abundant and can be extracted from seawater and lithium.
Conditions: For fusion to occur, we need extreme temperatures (about 150 million degrees Celsius, much hotter than the sun's core) to make the hydrogen nuclei move fast enough to overcome their natural repulsion.
Containment: This super-hot plasma (a state of matter where electrons are stripped from atoms) must be contained long enough for fusion to happen, typically done using powerful magnetic fields in a device called a tokamak.
Current Status of Fusion Energy
Fusion energy has been in the experimental stage for decades. Despite significant progress, we haven't yet achieved a commercially viable fusion reactor. However, there are promising developments:
ITER Project: Located in France, ITER is the world's largest fusion experiment. It's a collaboration of 35 nations aimed at proving that fusion energy can be produced sustainably.
National Ignition Facility (NIF): In the USA, NIF achieved a significant milestone by reaching the required conditions for fusion ignition, albeit not yet in a sustained and controlled manner.
Future of Fusion Energy
The future of fusion energy looks incredibly bright, with several key milestones anticipated:
Commercial Reactors: Many experts believe that we could see the first commercial fusion reactors by the 2040s. These reactors would provide a much needed source of clean, safe, and virtually limitless energy.
Advanced Research: Continuous advancements in materials science, magnetic confinement techniques, and plasma physics are accelerating our progress toward viable fusion power.
Private Sector Involvement: Companies like Helion Energy, Commonwealth Fusion Systems, and Tokamak Energy are investing heavily in fusion technology, bringing fresh innovation and faster development timelines.
Benefits of Fusion Energy
Fusion energy promises numerous benefits that could transform our world:
Clean Energy: Fusion produces no greenhouse gases or long-lived radioactive waste, making it a major player in combating climate change.
Abundant Fuel Supply: The primary fuels for fusion, deuterium and tritium, are readily available and abundant. For instance, deuterium can be extracted from seawater, and there's enough to power our planet for millions of years.
Stable and Safe: Fusion reactors carry no risk of a runaway reaction or meltdown. If a problem arises, the reaction simply stops.
High Energy Output: Fusion releases vastly more energy than chemical reactions like burning fossil fuels or even nuclear fission. To put it in perspective, a single gram of fusion fuel could provide as much energy as burning 10 tons of coal.
Support for Renewables: Fusion can complement renewable energy sources like solar and wind, ensuring a stable and reliable energy grid.
Conclusion: The Road Ahead
Fusion energy represents a beacon of hope in our quest for sustainable and clean energy solutions. While we are still on the path to achieving this goal, the scientific community's relentless pursuit and recent breakthroughs make it clear that fusion is not a distant dream but an impending reality.
Imagine a world where we can harness the power of the stars, providing clean and limitless energy to all corners of the globe. This is not just about keeping the lights on but about powering a brighter, healthier, and more sustainable future for generations to come.
So, as we look to the future, let's keep our eyes on the stars and our minds on the possibilities they hold. The journey of fusion energy is one of the most exciting frontiers in science and technology, and I'm thrilled to share this cosmic voyage with you.
Stay curious, stay hopeful, and stay energized!

Twente Consortium Develops Vibration-free Cooling for Measuring Gravitational Waves - Technology Org
A consortium of the University of Twente, Demcon Kryoz and Cooll will develop an advanced cooling system for the Einstein Telescope that will measure gravitational waves.
The consortium will receive €2.6 million over a three-year period from the Einstein Telescope R&D scheme, funded by the National Growth Fund.

The Einstein Telescope will be a huge observatory that will measure gravitational waves that Albert Einstein predicted more than 100 years ago. Those gravitational waves are so weak that even the smallest vibrations make it impossible to detect the waves. Detecting these very weak signals from the universe requires vibration-free cooling to very low temperatures.
Measuring gravitational waves
Observations of gravitational waves by existing observatories and the new Einstein Telescope are made with laser beams. These are sent into ten-kilometre-long tunnels in two directions and reflected by mirrors at the ends to be collected at the starting point by a detector.
The measurement signal depends on the difference in the path travelled by the two laser beams. University lecturer Michiel van Limbeek explains: “A passing gravity wave influences that difference on the measurement signal. You can extract information from that, for example about how that gravitational wave was formed.”
To fund the research, the R&D scheme was created as part of the ET valorisation programme with a financial contribution from the National Growth Fund. The scheme has five calls; the first was for vibration-free cooling, which is needed to make measurements much more accurate. That call was awarded to the Twente consortium.
Three-stage cooling system
The Twente consortium will receive €2.6 million over three years to make its cooling technology suitable for the Einstein Telescope. To do so, they will develop a three-stage cooling system that works with three different coolants, neon, hydrogen and helium.
The cooling process starts at -195 °C, the temperature reached with liquid nitrogen. Two intermediate steps are needed to reach the final, trickiest step to -263 °C: the coldest point in the cooling system. Eventually, they will build three copies of the cooling system, one for research at the University of Twente and two for the ETpathfinder in Maastricht.
More information
Dr Michiel van Limbeek is an Associate Professor in the Department of Energy, Materials & Systems (EMS; Faculty of S&T). Among other things, the research group has been conducting research on vibration-free cooling based on a sorption technology using activated carbon for over 20 years.
Besides research on cryogenic techniques, the EMS group also works on high-current superconductivity. Applications are in the field of renewable energy (including nuclear fusion and high-power electricity transmission) and scientific research. EMS contributes to CERN (elementary particles), ESA (space exploration) and the Einstein Telescope (gravitational waves), among others.

Humanity's Cosmic Quest: Expanding to the Stars for Resources and Rare Metals with the Aid of AI
As the Earth's resources dwindle and humanity's thirst for technological advancement continues unabated, the idea of venturing beyond our home planet becomes more than a dream; it evolves into a necessity. In the not-so-distant future, humans may embrace the cosmic frontier to secure crucial resources and rare metals that could fuel our civilization for generations to come. The stars hold the promise of untapped riches, but the success of such an endeavor would heavily rely on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) as our invaluable cosmic ally.
The Allure of the Stars: A Galactic Gold Rush
The cosmos presents a plethora of celestial bodies teeming with valuable resources. Planets, asteroids, and moons are believed to house vast deposits of rare metals such as platinum, gold, and palladium, along with other essential elements like helium-3 and water ice. These invaluable resources could revolutionize various industries, from energy production to advanced electronics, but accessing them requires stepping beyond Earth's confines.
Resource Extraction Beyond Earth
Traditional mining methods may prove inadequate for cosmic resource extraction. However, in the not-so-distant future, humanity may perfect advanced mining technologies such as automated mining drones and self-replicating robots, capable of navigating the harsh environments of celestial bodies and extracting valuable materials efficiently. AI will be the cornerstone of these technologies, enabling these machines to adapt, learn, and optimize their operations as they traverse the cosmos.
AI's Role in Stellar Navigation and Exploration
Before resources can be extracted, humanity must first identify promising celestial bodies worth exploring. AI will play a pivotal role in analyzing vast amounts of astronomical data to pinpoint potential targets for resource-rich locations. Advanced machine learning algorithms, guided by human input and historical geological data, will help identify ideal candidates for resource extraction missions.
Additionally, as space missions extend farther into the cosmos, AI will assist in autonomous navigation, ensuring spacecraft reach their destinations safely and efficiently. By continuously analyzing and adapting to various space conditions, AI-powered systems can optimize fuel consumption and maneuvering, saving resources and time during these ambitious missions.

Frank, what's your stance on nuclear energy as a sustainable replacement for fossil fuels?
Ugh, Nuclear Energy
On some level I get what people are saying. I agree that nuclear energy, in the form of something like the "nuclear waste" thing that you can store in a canister and bury underground, is an amazing technological feat that can probably solve many of our problems with fossil fuels.
I'm probably more skeptical than others about what I'll call the "nuclear energy future," as it is still in many ways an embryonic technology. We have not yet come up with any way for that buried canister to be reused, and for now we must deal with it as just "waste." At some point this might stop being the case -- maybe we can use some new technology to break down that canister and make something from it (though it may be difficult to make useful things from a material that's already been irradiated).
But there are also big problems with nuclear power that, to my mind, it doesn't get enough credit for. Namely, the fact that we can't totally isolate our fuel rods from the surrounding environment, and that this raises some difficult questions about what would happen if some catastrophe did make a meltdown inevitable.
In order to make the nuclear fuel you use for your power station, we have to extract plutonium from uranium. It's a highly-enriched radioactive material that we get by separating some uranium from the rest (i.e. by making a fuel rod out of the uranium-235 nucleus). There are many ways to make the fuel, but the process we are most familiar with in terms of technology is something called the "rapid-fusion" process, in which uranium atoms are fused in a "burner" with lithium and deuterium in order to create helium and plutonium.
The first issue here is that helium, once we have it, we don't want to keep in a fuel rod. Helium is not terribly useful -- a little bit of it makes a big difference, but not much. We keep it to minimize the amount of uranium that goes into the fuel, because uranium is very expensive. The problem is that helium is radioactive, and this fact seems to go unmentioned in most discussions of nuclear power as it pertains to our energy needs in the future.
We have this canister of material that's mostly uranium, but with some plutonium mixed in. We can stick a whole bunch of these canisters in it, and let them sit for a long time -- maybe a year or two -- waiting for some natural process to break down the plutonium into some other, safer isotope. Then we can use our fuel rods in the reactor.
What would happen if there was an accident in the reactor and the canister started leaking some of its helium?
How long could it go on leaking? We can't be sure -- our data on helium leaks are all theoretical and based on mathematical models and computer simulations. We have a lot of helium, but what if there was some kind of catastrophic breakdown in which this helium spilled out, quickly and at a fast rate, or perhaps just slowly over a long period of time??
Well, there is reason to think that helium leaks might be a serious problem. For one thing, helium is one of the few gases that forms a siphon -- when you have, say, a fuel rod that contains a tiny bit of material that emits some helium, but you keep the remaining amount very large, you can build up a pressure inside the fuel rod. Now if you put a hole into the pressure vessel and let some helium leak out, the hole will be quickly filled back up. This means that you have a small pressure drop, but not one that will seriously affect you. However, there is reason to believe that the helium pressure drop will build up gradually over time -- what if there were multiple holes in our canister, connected to a network of leaking canisters?
What if, through some process, the amount of helium being siphoned out of the fuel rod exceeded the capacity of the canister to release it?
Or what if helium was being released at the wrong rate, such that the leaks became continuous? What if it was so continuous that it filled up the whole canister in a short period of time?
The only way to deal with this is to seal the canister. The idea of sealing the canister is not one that is immediately obvious to us, and so a few people have asked some very difficult questions about whether we could in fact seal the canister with material that's strong enough to resist the force of the helium pressure. If we can't seal the canister, there is a nonzero chance that, through a series of events that would be extremely unusual but that might happen if you just had enough helium coming out of the canister, the canister might leak so much helium that it goes through the holes in the canister and flows back into the fuel rod. At some point it will end up inside the fuel rod and we will have an automated explosion that melts down the fuel rod and vaporizes the reactor.
Now one can probably think of some very large number of people working on the technology of nuclear power who are very confident that we can guarantee that the canister will never fail in this way, and this number would probably be in the "thousands." However, I'd put my bets a lot less confidently on those people than on the people who have worked for years on coming up with a real solution to this question.
The second problem with nuclear energy as it exists in the current day is the fuel itself -- the rods that we use for the fuel. These are also very expensive to make, and also very difficult to extract, store, and dispose of (if you're burying them underground). This is why they have the warning in the above picture that "It is very dangerous work and requires special training and equipment," -- the whole idea of making fuel rods requires you to have, and deal with, large amounts of plutonium.
As with the helium thing, there are people who are very confident that we will find a way to handle this very well in a real-life environment. The amount of confidence, and lack of confidence, varies wildly, but I'd put my bets on a lot fewer people than on the people who have actually studied the subject in a careful and serious way.
The third issue with nuclear energy is the waste.
Nuclear fuel rods contain uranium, a radioactive element, and plutonium, which is radioactive in a way that the uranium isn't. The plutonium tends to be about ten times more radioactive than uranium, so if we have fuel rods that contain a certain amount of plutonium, we can irradiate some of that plutonium into a new element called transluminogen -- the word "luminous" isn't necessarily luminous in the way you know it from a tree or from the sun, but anyway it is luminous, and you can get all of the energy out of this new element with a few percent of the uranium in the fuel. This is an ideal solution, at least if you are willing to believe it in nuclear power.
For one thing, this solution to the waste problem is expensive. You have to make the fuel rods, or at least the plutonium-bearing ones that we'll make later, and then irradiate some plutonium into the transluminogen elements, and then use those transluminogen elements to make more fuel rods. Then, irradiate the plutonium into the new fuel again, and so on and so forth, until the uranium and plutonium have all been irradiated into something that's about as radioactive as plutonium.
This is a pretty expensive solution, especially given that it's an ideal solution to the problem of waste.

HOMESHAKE
with Salami Rose Joe Louis at The Crescent Ballroom (info/tix)
Unlike most of us, Peter Sagar — also known as HOMESHAKE — was staying at home a lot, long before the pandemic. Sagar wrote the majority of his fifth studio album, Under the Weather, in 2019, when he was going through a long, unrelenting period of sadness. “I was in a deep, deep depression,” he recalls of that time period now. “Tours were breaking me. It was awful.” Sagar and his partner were living in Montreal and while everyone was out being social, he was inside listening to ambient music, binging Star Trek, and writing songs. (Sound familiar?) “It was a bit of a dark pit,” he says. “That’s kind of what the whole album is about.”
Under the Weather follows Sagar’s life and the depression that consumed him in 2019 — after a brief album intro, it jumps right into “Feel Better,” a reflection on attempting to buck up when the weather outside is grim. The album is hazy and moody, the pace slow as syrup, and from beginning to end, a fog falls over every synth and guitar line. In “Inaminit,” Sagar cancels plans when he’s feeling low; the closing track, “Tenterhooks,” sees Sagar’s deliverance into the depths of despair: “Feel myself drying up / feel myself turn into dust,” he sings over a funhouse mirror synth. “Oftentimes when you’re in a dark place, you’re supposed to journal and that helps release the pressure,” Sagar says. “For me, it always found its way into the music.”
Capturing the cloudy sound of a depressive funk was no simple feat, especially in the headspace Sagar was in for over a year. For that reason, he decided to enlist his friend, Jerry Paper’s Lucas Nathan, to help with production on the record. Having Nathan contribute helped Sagar dial back some of “dry, pristine digital sound” that defined his fourth studio album, Helium, and add back personal analog touches that drew people to the HOMESHAKE project in the first place.
“I didn’t realize how much I missed having a second set of ears. It’s pretty invaluable,” Sagar says. He would send all the of tracks back and forth with Nathan over the course of 2019, which made the process a longer one than he was used to. “There are a lot of things that I probably wouldn't have done that Lucas did do. I would tend to do a lot of softening of things, a lot of making everything super bassy and gentle. Lucas was aware that sometimes you needed some punch and grit.” To Sagar, those additions made the record what it is — a melodic, honest look at personal emotional struggle.
As Sagar readies it for release this September, the record he wrote about feeling isolated, alone, and despondent has begun to seem eerily prescient. “People will probably think that I made Under the Weather during or about Covid,” Sagar reflects now. “I was just already living my life that way.” For Sagar, the feelings he experienced over the course of that year are far from over — “I’ve been writing about feeling isolated my whole life,” he says — but with age, he has come to understand them better. “I had a fairly clear idea what the album was going to be like based on where I was emotionally at the time,” he says about Under the Weather. “I just try to make music that is honest about how I’m feeling.”
"The architecture of his sound has always held some of the funniest parts of the ’80s at its core. And here, the pure sleaziness he is able to extract from his instruments can be gloriously campy, or unexpectedly elegant and morose." - Pitchfork

Meet The Space Force: More Embarrassing Political Pornography On Jan. 3rd, 2019, China landed the Chang-e 4 rover on the far side of the moon. This was a dramatic accomplishment in terms of extraterrestrial activity. The mission had a concrete purpose, not merely in terms of scientific research, but also in terms of technology.Helium-3, the rare, non-radioactive isotope, is quite hard to find on earth. Due to its rarity, it costs roughly $40,000 per ounce. However, Helium-3 is highly abundant on the far side of the Moon. The Chang’e 4 is believed to be the first step, with China intending to send up Chang’e 5, which will land on the moon, load up, and return to earth with a cache of Helium-3, extracted from the lunar surface. Helium-3 is in high demand right now, as fusion energy research is taking off. Many believe that Helium-3 could be used in a fusion reactor that could be developed, and completely change life on this planet with abundant levels of new energy. Russian President, Vladimir Putin is a champion of these efforts, saying: “Potentially we can harness a colossal, inexhaustible and safe source of energy. However, we will only succeed in fusion energy and in solving other fundamental tasks if we establish broad international cooperation and interaction between government and business and join the efforts of researchers representing different scientific schools and areas. If technological development becomes truly global, it will not be split up or reined in by attempts to monopolize progress, limit access to education and put up new obstacles to the free exchange of knowledge and ideas…The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) serves as a prime example of open scientific, technological cooperation. Scientists are now planning to use it to launch the process of controlled thermonuclear fusion…Our country is actively participating in this project, and is now prepared to suggest that they use Russia’s scientific infrastructure for joint research, joint scientific investigation, for the international scientific teams that are working in the sphere of nature-like and other breakthrough technologies, including unique mega-science installations.” The US space program originated with similar aspirations. NASA sought to advance human civilization, develop new energy sources, and make life better on earth by reaching for the stars. On Sept. 20th, 1963, US President, John F. Kennedy spoke at the United Nations and proposed that instead of having a “Space Race” that the United States and the Soviet Union work together. He said: “In a field where the United States and the Soviet Union have a special capacity–in the field of space–there is room for new cooperation, for further joint efforts in the regulation and exploration of space. I include among these possibilities a joint expedition to the moon.” 2020: Pornography Takes the Place of Politics When describing the years of 1907-1910, a period when Russia was gripped by hopelessness after the failure of the 1905 revolution, Vladimir Lenin wrote: “Depression, demoralization, splits, discord, defection, and pornography took the place of politics.” Such words accurately describe the current atmosphere within the United States. Suicide rates are higher than they have been in decades. Opioid addiction is also claiming lives at a very high rate. Roads across the country are being un-paved because municipalities cannot afford to maintain them. Water is not being properly purified. Demoralization and depression are abundant, and discord among the country’s different demographics and regions is also widespread. In terms of “pornography,” the US Commander in Chief, Donald J. Trump boasted about the size of his penis in during a Republican primary debate. Furthermore, the “October Surprise” from his detractors, which dominated much of the political debate in the lead up to his electoral victory, was the infamous “Access Hollywood Tape” of Trump describing lewd activities with women, in a manner many interpreted as advocating sexual assault. After Trump was elected, feminist activists poured into the streets, dressed in pink to oppose him in a series of “Women’s Marches.” Many of the marchers wore hats sewn specifically to look like female genitalia. As impeachment proceedings continue against Trump in the US Congress and hopes that he would be a non-interventionist have faded away after his rapid escalations against Iran, Donald Trump continued to press forward with one of his favorite projects: The Space Force. On January 27th, just over a year after China’s historical intergalactic accomplishment, Trump released the logo of the new branch of the US Armed Forces created by this year’s congressional defense spending bill. The logo of Trump’s “Space Force” was immediately met with mockery and laughter, because it bears an obvious resemblance to the insignia used in the Star Trek TV programs. Trump’s Space Force is not an extension of NASA or push to send humans to Mars. It is not part of Russia and China’s efforts to make breakthroughs in Fusion Energy. The Space Force is purely military. As Trump explained: “Our destiny, beyond the Earth, is not only a matter of national identity but a matter of national security.” The White House proposed that the new branch of the US military be required: “Strengthen America’s ability to compete, deter and win in an increasingly contested domain. Organize, train and equip our space warfighters with next-generation capabilities. Maximize warfighting capability and advocacy for space while minimizing bureaucracy.” “We don’t want China and Russia and other countries leading us. We’ve always led — we’ve gone way far afield for decades now, having to do with our subject today. We’re going to be the leader by far. We’re behind you a thousand percent,” Trump said when he announced the proposal. LARPing from the White House Indeed, if Trump were to push the Space Program as it had originally been intended, it would require massive reforms to the US educational system. Instead of importing engineers and scientists from across the planet, the United States would be forced to start providing its young people, who greatly trail behind in Math and Science, with a much higher quality education. In response to the Soviet launch of Sputnik in 1957, US government funding of education vastly increased. However, Betsy DeVos, Trump’s Education Secretary, favors dismantling public education, replacing it “schools for profit” Charter Schools, as well as schools run by religious institutions. While Betsy DeVos wouldn’t favor ramping up NASA, the Education Secretary and Billionaire Heiress, whose brother is none other than Erik Prince, founder of the Blackwater (Academi) Military contracting corporation, is most likely happy with Trump’s alternative move. The entire military industrial complex must be excited about expanding the highly profitable market for cruise missiles, bombs and drones into a whole new frontier. If the logo is any indicator, the Pentagon is probably on the verge of announcing new plans to develop phasers, laser beams, and lightsabers. The fact that the Space Force is intended to appeal to young voters, who tend to disfavor Trump, is no secret. In announcing the proposal Trump said: “A new generation of young people seeks to challenge — really challenge hard — to get their talent and their skill to work. And now we’re giving them a forum and a platform from which they can put that genius to work.” Indeed, many of America’s youth, young men, in particular, are probably quite excited about the Space Force. As young Americans find themselves stuck in low-wage, short term, service sector jobs, unable to earn a living, get married, buy a home, and have children, many are reduced to a kind of prolonged adolescence. Instead of raising kids and having fulfilling careers, many young people who are stuck making coffee or sweeping floors have found the world of Science Fiction and Fantasy as a place of solace. Many young Americans, who don’t seem to have much else to do, having been robbed of a fulfilling adult life, take pleasure in “LARPing” or “Live Action Role Play.” They dress in costumes like their favorite science fiction and fantasy characters, holding conventions and acting out scenes. While this LARPing subculture is new, Star Trek fans have been doing for decades. In the 1970s and 80s, the “Trekkies” were the object of mockery, but now their practices of dressing up in costumes and pretending to engage in outer space or medieval combat are much more respected. Oddly, a section of the new, white supremacist right-wing emerged that seemed to be somewhat reminiscent of the LARPers, though more dangerous. The group called itself the “Fraternal Order of Alt-Knights” and trained its members in using sticks, wearing helmets, and carrying shields of the purpose of street fighting. While images of the group’s members certainly look reminiscent of LARPers, their intentions are quite different. While the LARPers shy away from politics and are very clear that what they do is all play and pretend, despite the costumes, the Alt-Knights seem to be ready for a real confrontation as they rant and rave about “western civilization” and “cultural Marxism.” Many reports indicate that the Alt-Knight organization has effectively become defunct in the aftermath of the 2017 incident in Charlottesville. Outer Space Atlanticism in an Age of Pessimism Regardless, for millions of young people who spend their weekends pretending to be intergalactic fighters, Trump’s “Space Force” proposal sounds like their greatest hope. It is a chance to make their weekend fantasies come true. To paraphrase the old 1960s bumper sticker mocking US military recruiters, they can travel beyond the earth, meet new interesting people… and kill them. The Space Force seems to be yet another expression of Atlanticism. It fits the geopolitical trend of two different civilizational models. Societies based on Eurasian landmass have focused on building up industry and infrastructure, making scientific, architectural and mathematical breakthroughs. These Eurasian civilizations have been contrasted with the Atlanticist Empires, from ancient Rome to the 1800s British, who focused simply on control of the trade routes and extracting tribute at the point of a spear. One wonders if the American “Space Force” will seize the next Chang’e mission to the Moon, and demand it hand over some Helium-3 in exchange for crossing into extraterrestrial territory declared to be “ours.” Such a tragic event would fit the patterns that have played out since the dawn of agriculture, when some humans started to build cities to function as trading hubs, while others chose to remain in the forests, hunting animals and robbing travelers. The French philosopher George Sorel, himself an outspoken pessimist contrasted the two views as they were manifested in Ancient Greece, writing: “It seems to me that the optimism of the Greek philosophers depended to a great extent on economic reasons; it probably arose in the rich and commercial urban populations who were able to regard the universe as an immense shop full of excellent things with which they could satisfy their greed. I imagine that Greek pessimism sprang from poor warlike tribes living in the mountains, who were filled with enormous aristocratic pride, but whose material conditions were correspondingly poor… they explained their present wretchedness to them by relating catastrophes in which semi-divine former chiefs had succumbed to fate or the jealousy of the gods; the courage of the warriors might for the moment be unable to accomplish anything, but it would not always be so; the tribe must remain faithful to the old customs in order to be ready for great and victorious expeditions, which might very well take place in the near future.” Regardless, as pessimism is on the rise across the United States, Trump’s new sixth division of the US armed forces seems to capture the spirit of the times, LARP-style logo included. Despite celebrations amid the widespread mockery, no proposal to add a sixth wall to the Pentagon has yet been proposed.

Mining the Moon
by Paul K. Byrne
Tumblr media

If you were transported to the Moon this very instant, you would surely and rapidly die. That’s because there’s no atmosphere, the surface temperature varies from a roasting 130 degrees Celsius (266 F) to a bone-chilling minus 170 C (minus 274 F). If the lack of air or horrific heat or cold don’t kill you then micrometeorite bombardment or solar radiation will. By all accounts, the Moon is not a hospitable place to be.
Yet if human beings are to explore the Moon and, potentially, live there one day, we’ll need to learn how to deal with these challenging environmental conditions. We’ll need habitats, air, food and energy, as well as fuel to power rockets back to Earth and possibly other destinations. That means we’ll need resources to meet these requirements. We can either bring them with us from Earth – an expensive proposition – or we’ll need to take advantage of resources on the Moon itself. And that’s where the idea of “in-situ resource utilization,” or ISRU, comes in.
Underpinning efforts to use lunar materials is the desire to establish either temporary or even permanent human settlements on the Moon – and there are numerous benefits to doing so. For example, lunar bases or colonies could provide invaluable training and preparation for missions to farther flung destinations, including Mars. Developing and utilizing lunar resources will likely lead to a vast number of innovative and exotic technologies that could be useful on Earth, as has been the case with the International Space Station.
As a planetary geologist, I’m fascinated by how other worlds came to be, and what lessons we can learn about the formation and evolution of our own planet. And because one day I hope to actually visit the Moon in person, I’m particularly interested in how we can use the resources there to make human exploration of the solar system as economical as possible.

In-situ resource utilization
ISRU sounds like science fiction, and for the moment it largely is. This concept involves identifying, extracting and processing material from the lunar surface and interior and converting it into something useful: oxygen for breathing, electricity, construction materials and even rocket fuel.
Many countries have expressed a renewed desire to go back to the Moon. NASA has a multitude of plans to do so, China landed a rover on the lunar farside in January and has an active rover there right now, and numerous other countries have their sights set on lunar missions. The necessity of using materials already present on the Moon becomes more pressing.
Tumblr media

Anticipation of lunar living is driving engineering and experimental work to determine how to efficiently use lunar materials to support human exploration. For example, the European Space Agency is planning to land a spacecraft at the lunar South Pole in 2022 to drill beneath the surface in search of water ice and other chemicals. This craft will feature a research instrument designed to obtain water from the lunar soil or regolith.
There have even been discussions of eventually mining and shipping back to Earth the helium-3 locked in the lunar regolith. Helium-3 (a non-radioactive isotope of helium) could be used as fuel for fusion reactors to produce vast amounts of energy at very low environmental cost – although fusion as a power source has not yet been demonstrated, and the volume of extractable helium-3 is unknown. Nonetheless, even as the true costs and benefits of lunar ISRU remain to be seen, there is little reason to think that the considerable current interest in mining the Moon won’t continue.
It’s worth noting that the Moon may not be a particularly suitable destination for mining other valuable metals such as gold, platinum or rare earth elements. This is because of the process of differentiation, in which relatively heavy materials sink and lighter materials rise when a planetary body is partially or almost fully molten.
This is basically what goes on if you shake a test tube filled with sand and water. At first, everything is mixed together, but then the sand eventually separates from the liquid and sinks to the bottom of the tube. And just as for Earth, most of the Moon’s inventory of heavy and valuable metals are likely deep in the mantle or even the core, where they’re essentially impossible to access. Indeed, it’s because minor bodies such as asteroids generally don’t undergo differentiation that they’re such promising targets for mineral exploration and extraction.
Tumblr media

Lunar formation
Indeed, the Moon holds a special place in planetary science because it is the only other body in the solar system where human beings have set foot. The NASA Apollo program in the 1960s and 70s saw a total of 12 astronauts walk, bounce and rove on the surface. The rock samples they brought back and the experiments they left there have enabled a greater understanding of not only our Moon, but of how planets form in general, than would ever have been possible otherwise.
From those missions, and others over the ensuing decades, scientists have learned a great deal about the Moon. Instead of growing from a cloud of dust and ice as the planets in the solar system did, we’ve discovered that our nearest neighbor is probably the result of a giant impact between the proto-Earth and a Mars-sized object. That collision ejected a huge volume of debris, some of which later coalesced into the Moon. From analyses of lunar samples, advanced computer modeling and comparisons with other planets in the solar system, we’ve learned among many other things that colossal impacts could be the rule, not the exception, in the early days of this and other planetary systems.
