USAF increases presence of bombers in the Pacific: B-52s arrive in Guam, B-1s in Japan
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 14/07/2023 - 08:15 in Military, War Zones
The presence of U.S. Air Force bombers in the Indo-Pacific has increased significantly in the last two weeks, as more B-52 Stratofortresses arrived in Guam and B-1 Lancers landed in Japan.
The B-52s and aviators of the 20º Expeditionary Bombing Squadron at Barksdale Air Base, Louisiana, landed at Andersen Air Base, Guam, on July 5. They join the B-52s of Minot Air Force Base, N.D., which were deployed in Guam last month on a Bomber Task Force mission.
“The Bomber Task Force was designed to improve the cutting-edge readiness of the bomber force, while advancing our interoperability with allies and partners,” Lieutenant Colonel Jared Patterson, commander of the 20º EBS, said in a statement. "Each flown mission further demonstrates our ability to provide combat-ready agile forces and long-range attack capabilities to combat commanders around the world."
Five days later, two B-1s and about 25 aviators from Dyess Air Base, Texas, arrived at Misawa Air Base, Japan, in a separate rotation from the Bomber Task Force.
"Having the B-1 here in Japan shows even more the commitment of the United States to the Indo-Pacific region and our allies and partners," said Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Marshall, commander of the 345º Expeditionary Bomber Squadron, in a PACAF statement.
Since arriving in Guam in mid-June, the Minot B-52s have carried out integration exercises over the Korean Peninsula and were the first USAF B-52s to land in Indonesia. Last week, bombers also participated in the Northern Edge military exercise in the Gulf of Alaska.
Bomber activity in the Pacific has increased with increasing tensions in the region. In the last six months alone, USAF bombers have flown more than half a dozen sorties over the Korean Peninsula and carried out several integration exercises with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF).
Although bombers in Guam are common, the deployment of B-1 in Misawa is unusual. In the past, the B-1s rarely flew from Japan on Bomber Task Force missions. His arrival follows a report on the Stars & Stripes website on July 12 that one of Minot's B-52s was forced to make a rare emergency landing at Yokota Air Base, Japan, due to an in-flight maintenance problem. More details about the cause have not been disclosed.

Second batch of three Rafale fighter jets arrive in India
A second batch of three Rafale fighter jets arrived at Jamnagar airbase in Gujarat on Wednesday evening after flying non-stop from Istres airbase in France, taking the total number of aircraft in the fleet to eight, officials said.
This is nearly four years after India signed an inter-governmental agreement with France to procure 36 aircraft at a cost of Rs 59,000 crore.
The first batch of Rafale jets was inducted into the IAF on September 10. Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria on October 5 said that the induction of all 36 Rafale jets will be completed by 2023.
These are India's first major acquisition of fighter planes in 23 years after the Sukhoi jets were imported from Russia. The newly inducted fleet has been carrying out sorties in eastern Ladakh, where Indian and Chinese troops are engaged in a bitter border row for over five months.
The Rafale aircraft flew for over eight hours before landing at an IAF base. They covered a distance of over 3700 nautical miles with three in-flight refuellings. Read More

First batch of 5 Rafale jets takes off from France for India
NEW DELHI: The first batch of five Rafale jets on Monday took off from France for India, officials said. The multi-role fighter aircraft are scheduled to arrive at Ambala air force station on Wednesday, nearly four years after India signed an inter-governmental agreement with France to procure 36 Rafale jets for the Indian Air Force under a Rs 59,000-crore deal. The fleet is expected to significantly boost the IAF’s combat capabilities at a time when India is locked in a tense border row with China in eastern Ladakh. Indian Ambassador to France Jawed Ashraf interacted with IAF pilots before they took off from France. “Bon Voyage: Indian Ambassador to #France interacts with the Indian pilots of the Rafale. Congratulates and wishes them a safe flight to India with a single hop,” the Indian Embassy in Paris tweeted.

The first squadron of the Rafale jets will be stationed at Ambala air base. The five Rafales are scheduled to be inducted into the IAF on Wednesday afternoon. However, an IAF spokesperson said a formal induction ceremony will be held in mid-August. Official sources said the Rafale jets are likely to be deployed in the Ladakh sector as part of the IAF’s efforts to enhance its operational capabilities along Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in view of the border row with the country. The aircraft is capable of carrying a range of potent weapons. European missile maker MBDA’s Meteor beyond visual range air-to-air missile and Scalp cruise missile will be the mainstay of the weapons package of the Rafale jets. Meteor is the next generation of BVR air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) designed to revolutionise air-to-air combat. The weapon has been developed by MBDA to combat common threats facing the UK, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Sweden. The Meteor is powered by a unique rocket-ramjet motor that gives it far more engine power for much longer than any other missile, said an official. Besides the missile systems, the Rafale jets will come with various India-specific modifications, including Israeli helmet-mounted displays, radar warning receivers, low-band jammers, 10-hour flight data recording, infra-red search and tracking systems, among others. The IAF has already completed preparations, including readying required infrastructure and training pilots, to welcome the fighter aircraft. The second squadron of Rafale will be stationed at Hasimara base in West Bengal. The IAF spent around Rs 400 crore to develop the required infrastructure like shelters, hangars and maintenance facilities at the two bases. Out of the 36 Rafale jets, 30 will be fighter jets and six will be trainers. The trainer jets will be twin-seater and they will have almost all the features of the fighter jets.
