Not An April Fools Gag; That’s A Game Boy Advance With A GameCube Stick Affixed For Reals
What you're seeing is a modded GBA that I spotted on eBay. It's a real thing! Though it doesn't magically grant analogue control to all the digital input only games on the system, which is all of them for the record (sorry). Then again, it could be argued that the controls in WarioWare Twisted is technically analogue...
That aside aside, welcome to yet another recap of stuff posted over at the Attract Mode Twitter! Though this time it's gonna be a bit on the short side, relatively speaking; even I know covering two entire whole weeks has led to hard to handle Tumblr posts, so I'm going to try concentrating on just one week at a time/attempt weekly updates.
Let's see how well that goes...
Hey, it's SF2 IRL thanks to ARKit (via prostheticknowledge)...
youtube
At the time, when I first tweeted about it, there were only three left of Amanda Visell’s Player One Mario; no idea how many there are now...
When you can make a decision regarding lunch (via @Mechazawa)....
If you appreciate both the ease of slip-on sneakers and the taste of ghosts, then Games Glorious has something for you (via miki800.com)...
As a connoisseur of video games on the printed page, it is my goal to one day own a copy of Namco's newsletter that was distributed in game centers during the 80s & 90s, NG (via miki800)...
Remember that time Namco got someone from Yellow Magic Orchestra to hawk their wares (via namcomuseum)...
Both in print and on TV…
youtube
The YMO member in question, Haruomi Hosono, also did a Xevious remix album, which longtime readers of the blog will hopefully recall.
Sticking with Namco CMs, there’s a pair of longtime faves that I could have sworn I’ve already posted as well, yet cannot find. Though as noted, many times already, the search functionality here is broken.
So here’s a boy playing with his Famicom in the middle of the woods...

And here’s a girl playing with his Famicom in the middle of the woods...

Back to the subject of print, can’t seem to find any info on the Futabasha Fantasy Novel Series, which (I think) was a line of video game novelizations; this one appears to be written by the creator of Xevious himself (via shmups)...
The focus here is supposed to be the Lawson’s reward card with Kirby on it, but I am all about that Space Invaders whatever the heck it is (via miki800)...
Spent MANY hours at Japanese bookstores during my college years, flipping through Sega Saturn Magazine; seeing these VF Kids ads again makes me feel all warm & fuzzy (via thesegasource)...
This (what I believe to be a) farewell image of the face of the Saturn from the very first issue of Dreamcast Magazine, also gives me the feels (via oldgamemags)...
BTW, everyone knows the identity of Saturn's pitchman (Segata Sanshiro), but what about the Mega Drive's? (via yokosuka87)...
Back to the Saturn; I love how Sega want from Segata Sanshiro to Hidekazu Yukawa for the Dreamcast. This launch edition of the console, btw, was spotted at VideoGamesNewYork...
It's also where they Kira Kira Star Night DX for twice the asking price, as @gamespite)...
Speaking of music, to fully enjoy this animated gif of Eggman running…
… you need to have this song playing (via lunaticobscurity).
And to fully enjoy this image of Eggman on the sax…
... you need to have this song playing (via very-territorial-oak).
@ondoruragitan sez: "whoever designed that clown lady in ace attorney is probably the most horny artist to ever exist" (it's funny cuz it's true)...
So the big news these past few weeks, especially among video game folk my age, has been the end of the Toys R Us. Many have been sharing artifacts from the glory days, with my fave example being these old flyers, with the obvious highlight seeing all the original MSRP prices (via retrogamerblog)...
Oh, and don’t forget the gifs (via nintendroid)...
The following are more appropriate for my way, way overdue batch of game culture snapshots, but since we're on the subject of retail anyway; I recently stumbled across Nintendo's collab with Bloomingdale's that I had no idea even existed...
Took a bunch of pics, but unfortunately, due to the harsh lighting at the SoHo store, it was impossible to capture the women’s section, hence the abundance of men’s wear...
These women's sweatshirts are the best example of the line's overall design sensibilities, or lack thereof; it’s just a bunch of random Nintendo sprites on attire that is available at Bloomingdale's, period. That's all it aspires to be, nothing more...
... And that's a real shame, cuz aside from the quality of the clothing itself being high, some of the ho-hum looking designs could be really engaging with a few minor tweaks, like this b&w women's jacket with a very random assortment of b&w Super Mario World sprites...
In addition to clothing, you had accessories, like iPhone cases...
Plus sunglasses, which revealed Super Mario World playing on what appears to the naked eye to be a blank, white screen....
Speaking of Super Mario World, here's a hamster enjoying the game (via @kousuke_teppei)...
The lil guy also owns an original Famicom, and here we is playing Solomon's Key (thanks to @Topherocious for helping me to identify the game)...
Being that friend who is REALLY into video games means I'm asked a wide variety of questions from folks who are not, like why @beesmygod is "freaking out" over a Sonic & Garfield two pack for the PC...
... I'll be honest, I don't really understand why either.
Here we have a mockup for an ad blocker that replaces banners with GBA screenshots, which I really want to see happen (via @tinycartridge)...
I also really want to see this happen too (via @truongasm)...
Back to Tiny Cart; that's where I found out that you no longer have to play emulated Tiger handheld games sans backgrounds...
Nothing beats a pic of a dimly lit arcade, especially when it's shot on ACTUAL film (via mendelpalace)...
As for this particular arcade show, @kappuru theorizes "it looks like cinestill film, or a filter designed to mimic it." (via parkerwoods)...
"WHO IS THIS NUN?! WHY DOES SHE LOOK SO SINISTER?" is a great KOF related question (via vice-s-assistant)...
And "BOWL BEFORE ME" is a great KOF related gag (via brondeef)...
"this is the best cosplay i’ve ever seen" is a a great costume play related observation made by lunaticobscurity...
"how to get away with playing super mario odyssey in class" is the caption given by retrogamerblog...
"Stardew Valley gave me 500 characters to use as my farm name, so I put down an entire 1-star amazon review for an Independence Day DVD" is the explanation given by @NoahHafford...
Hey, you never know, maybe one day a homebrew dev might make “Shinjuku-Nichome Gay District Serial Murders” a reality? (via mendelpalace)
When you’ve got one copy of Melee with two boxes, and one copy of Air Ride with zero boxes… just gotta improvise (via stellatuna)...
When you’ve got a killer Game Genie code but no paper to write it down on... and then you discover the code does something totally different (via theassortment)...
And when I asked what this 4koma featuring a Dreamcast VMU was all about, @JonahD was kind enough to explain: "VMUs are playing hide and seek, Black is seeking. One VMU thinks hiding in the controller would be good but it makes a bunch of noise and they’re found immediately" (via posthumanwanderings)...
Whereas I have yet to find out what all these Sonics are doing at a German airport (via sonicthehedgeblog)...
I normally don’t let the weather get to me, yet the constant cold weather in NYC over the past few weeks began taking its toll, to the point that I’m starting to resemble an upside down Super Famicom/European SNES (via sixteen-bit)...
I also really wish I could have checked out Sakura-Con, and not just cuz the weather is so much nicer in Seattle, but to pick up @alexisparade's Monster Factory zine...
I stared at gif illustrating the wacky perspective-related behavior of Super Mario 64’s trees for an entire day, no joke (via suppermariobroth)...
Here we have the rarely seen alternate angle of the internet famous "LAN party gamer duct-taped to the ceiling" photo (via reddit.com)...
Turning the clock back even further, here's yet another kind of party, one that doesn’t involve first person shooters but shoot ‘em ups; it’s the 1986 Hudson Caravan (via videogamesdensetsu)...
Recently, a modded NES Max controller showed up on Kotaku, in which the cycloid nub has been replaced with an analogue stick...
youtube
... Which actually appeared the day after I spotted that modded GBA at the very top of this page. I am also willing to admit the disappointment over my tweet not catching on as expected/hoped it would, hence why I'm sharing another pic...
At any rate, I was also reminded of my buddy Nick Santaniello's modded Jaguar controller, which allows for arcade perfect Tempest 2000 controls...
... Which in turned led to me republishing the post from which it hails from originally, my recap of Nick's Shmup Appreciation Night, for Medium (and also sharing additional pics on Twitter)...
BTW, for those wondering, based upon the last round of tweets; the kitchen isn’t just for playing old Mega Drive & PC Engine shmups… you can also play old Naomi fighting games (via internetflexin)...
Guess that's it for now? Sorry, but it finally feels like spring in NYC, and I feel the need to step away from the computer & enjoy weather! Just like Mega Man (via arcadequartermaster)...

Reason behind Elon Musk created Neuralink?
Reason behind Elon Musk created Neuralink?
By the end of the year 2030, artificial intelligence will be created that will surpass humans in this will cause very rapid scientific progress, says forecaster Ray Kurzweil, who's also the CTO of Google. According to him, when it comes to inserting chips into people will be able to do really crazy things.
For example, if any diseases detected, the chip will give us an alert, and we can deal with any COVID at an early stage, we won't need to study in schools and universities because we'll be able to learn anything in an instant, thanks to the fast operation of a chip that will find information and deliver it into our brain in less than a second.
Hello and welcome to the top10seriz.in we always trying to share with you some authentic and interesting topics. Today we will discuss another interesting topic Reason behind Elon Musk create Neuralink. So without waiting lets go to the topic
Everything that you'll learn about in this post is based on Kurzweil’s predictions. This man is a genius in the field of scientific prediction, he made 115 completely correct predictions out of 147 in the accuracy of his predictions is 86%.
So according to Ray, immediately after people start having chips implanted in their heads, they'll have endless opportunities thanks to their new cyber body, the neural network will create individual organs and body parts that will be better than human ones. Thus, our lifespans will increase. Thanks to the chip, we can modify our bodies and design them however we want. Remember the movie in the matrix, we can create such worlds simply by lying on the couch in our living room, and playing the chosen one or God with our friends.
Perhaps we'll even get the opportunity to travel through other people's dreams. Like in the movie inception. While our body is in the real world under a warm blanket, and robots will continuously do the work for us. Humanity will reach a 0% rate of crime because any thief can be identified by finding his job, and the police will not even have to use weapons to neutralize them. Because this can be done at a distance of millions of kilometers.
By giving the chip a command to send a charge of electricity into the criminal’s body, the police can paralyze them, and then, without shooting our casualties, place them under arrest. We have such fast development in the field of science in the first five years after the creation of the neural network, people will be able to colonize other planets and convert them into living zones.
In addition, humanity will achieve an ideal balance in the allocation of resources. The neural network will calculate the amount of food, electricity, water and everything else needed per person, and will live in maximum prosperity. The concept of poverty will remain only a memory from our past sounds like the ideal of communism. Speaking of politics, international relations will become much easier, the neural network will bring the leaders of countries to the most convenient terms of negotiations, and there will be no more conflicts between states. And if the countries unite their territories, then we will begin to live in one country according to a common set of laws.
But every silver lining has a cloud. Of course, a big downside of chips in our brains is advertising. Corporations will spend their resources to get their product promoted in our heads. Advertising will be customized for each individual, depending on where they live their preferences and interests. In moments when we become more receptive to advertising. The chip will emit special impulses to certain areas of the brain and show us the advertisement. But that's not all the chip will become one with you. In turn, your past will also become the property of the main server. What did you get sick from the last time what kind of sex you like why you vote for a certain candidate, and that awkward and shameful memory from your childhood all will not remain a secret life will cease to be intimate because any information will be recorded on the server where the creator of the chip can use it. And it's also possible that the chip will be hacked and fraudulent. Hackers will access all information about a person in their actions, which will lead to an incredible amount of blackmail.
But the downsides don't tend their work will become the privilege of the elite to take a place in any enterprise, you'll need to endure heavy competition because most of the work will be done by robots and vacancies will attract a huge number of people. In addition, it'll be much easier to lose your job because the chips in their system are very quickly updated, and new versions will come out as quickly as new iPhones. No matter how well you do your job. The advantage will remain with your competitors who receive new versions of the chip.
If they attempt to chip all of humanity, then there will be those who will oppose that the world will split into two factions, those who support chipping and those who resist imagine racism, but it will be about whether you have a chip in your head, the concept of chipophobe chipofile and other positive or negative terms on this topic will appear. It was announced at a recent conference by Elon musk that a chip developed by his company Neuralink was successfully implanted into a pig's brain without harm to its health.
According to Musk, this development will help people suffering from disorders of the brain or spinal cord. In the future, this chip will be improved and its capabilities will expand. But so far, it doesn't even have half of the functions of the final version of the chip predicted by Ray Kurzweil. But in addition to Neuralink, there are other developments for example, brain gate, so called brain implant from cyber kinetics. It's a chip like mechanism that can help control limbs or other body functions.
Thus, people who have problems with mobility will finally be able to move freely. Going even further, the company Nielsen has patented a method that uses brain impulses to find out what a person thinks about a product or advertisement, and thus investigate consumer behavior.
Microsoft already has a patent for a technology that can measure a user's readiness to receive ads. And in the future, the new silicon chips developed in collaboration with the National Research Council, or NRC of Canada will help us to understand how brain cells work under normal conditions, which in turn will give us an understanding of the causes of mental illness, and human taste preferences.
Nobody understands what these developments will lead to. I still have no idea if I want to implant a chip in my brain when it becomes as common as smartphones. I think if Elon Musk were the first to implant his invention into his head, it would be the best advertisement for his product. What do you think about that? Write your opinion in the comments.
But before that, I suggest you realize the following thing. According to Elon Musk people have already become cyborgs. We move in machine systems communicate via mobile devices. And every year more and more actions are made for us by readymade devices. The development of neuro chips and biological nano robots will just help us to get old mechanisms at hand. You no longer need a separate computer, your brain will become a computer itself.

MLB TV review: Stellar baseball streaming hampered by blackout restrictions

MLB TV review: Stellar baseball streaming hampered by blackout restrictions
For out-of-market baseball fans, MLB.TV is the only game in town to follow your favorite team night in and night out. As a Cincinnati Reds fan living in New England, I’d be able to watch only a handful of Reds games during the season — on the rare occasion when my small-market team makes an appearance on national television — were it not for MLB.TV. With the service, I’m able to watch nearly every one of the Reds’ 162 games from April to October, along with other out-of-market games every day of baseball’s regular season.
Like
Wide device support
Easy access to in-game stats
Choose your own audio feed.
Smooth streaming
Don’t Like
Blackout restrictions can be frustrating.
Inconsistent experience across devices.
At $130 for the year, MLB.TV is too pricey for casual fans but certainly worth it for serious baseball geeks who live outside their team’s home market. And that’s the catch. For fans of the local team — say a Red Sox fan living in New England, a Dodgers fan in LA — subscribing to MLB.TV makes little sense. That’s because your local team’s games are blacked out on MLB.TV, which means you’d be better served with cable or a live TV streaming service, like AT&T TV, Fubo or YouTube TV, that includes the regional sports network (RSN) that carries the games.

Not only are your local team’s games unavailable on MLB.TV, but nationally televised games also fall prey to blackout restrictions. Games on ESPN, Fox, FS1, MLB Network and TBS are blacked out on MLB.TV, which can be terribly disappointing when you attempt to tune into a game and are greeted with the blackout notice. It’s even worse for fans of the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Cubs and other big-market teams that are on national TV seemingly every week and, thus, constantly blacked out on MLB.TV. Even if you think you are sold on the service, be sure to peep your team’s national broadcast schedule before subscribing so you don’t find yourself singing the blackout restriction blues before the ivy turns green at Wrigley.
If you’re an out-of-market baseball fan willing to put up with the blackout restrictions, however, you’ll find plenty to like about MLB.TV. The live game streams are steady and smooth with few dropouts in my experience. They feature informative, easy-to-access stat overlays that enhance the viewing experience. From iPhones and tablets to PCs and TVs, there’s broad hardware support so you can tune into games no matter where you are. And you can listen to radio broadcasts with MLB.TV, which I’d say would be useless for every sport other than baseball.
Check out the MLB.TV app on iPad, phones and TV streamers
See all photos
In short, MLB.TV makes it possible and enjoyable to follow your favorite baseball team when you live far away from it. Being able to watch games live almost every day of the six-month season and hear your team’s announcers, the home crowd and even local ads connects you to your team. And after a year of chaos, pandemic and lockdowns, a summer of baseball could be just what the doctor ordered.
MLB.TV subscription options and extras
There are three ways to subscribe to MLB.TV:
Pay $130 to be able to watch out-of-market games live or on-demand. You can watch replays of your local team’s games, but there’s a 90-minute delay from the final out before the archived stream is available. Archived games are available sooner for out-of-market teams.
Pay $110 to be able to watch a single, out-of-market team live or on-demand. If you’re only interested in watching your favorite team play, then this plan can save you a few bucks. You sacrifice, however, the ability to switch over to a potential no-hitter in progress elsewhere or any other exciting matchup or moment that does not involve your team. I spend 95% of the time watching Reds games, but I still pay the extra $20 for the full package because FOMO is a real thing.
Pay $25 per month to be able to watch out-of-market games live or on-demand. This is a good option if you have doubts about your team contending this year and can see your attention waning along with your team’s chances by midseason.
You can pay by the month or for the full season.
Sarah Tew/CNET
With MLB.TV, you can also listen to home and away radio broadcasts. And baseball is one of the few sports, if not the only, that’s enjoyable to listen to on the radio. And some rare good news for the in-market fan: MLB.TV’s radio broadcasts aren’t subject to the blackout rule, so you can listen to your local team’s games live.
MLB.TV also includes a ton of video content, including classic games, baseball documentaries and old This Week in Baseball episodes. This year, a new show called Big Inning made its debut for MLB.TV subscribers. Starting at 9:30 p.m. ET each weekday night, Big Inning will offer live look-ins across all the games in action as well as highlights as they happen. It’ll feel similar to the NFL’s RedZone channel that jumps around the league’s game on Sunday afternoons.
MLB.TV is also adding pre- and post-game coverage this year, which is a welcome addition. After a big Reds win, I’m pumped up and ready to hear interviews and analysis, but my MLB.TV feed gets abruptly cut off before the on-field celebrations are complete. It’ll be a slow rollout with one or two clubs offering pre- and post-game coverage to start the season before being added to more than half the clubs by midseason, according to MLB. As with the games themselves, the pre- and post-game coverage will be available only to out-of-market viewers.
Two types of blackouts
MLB.TV lets you watch every game of the regular season that’s outside of your local TV market and also not on national TV. As a resident of New England, for example, I cannot watch Boston Red Sox games live on MLB.TV. Since the team I follow is a small market team that has not had much success in recent years, it is not picked for national broadcasts with any great frequency. As a result, I rarely encounter a Reds game blacked out on MLB.TV. I’d imagine the blackout restriction is much more frustrating to fans of successful, big-market teams, since their teams are shown regularly on ESPN and other national broadcasts.
These blackout restrictions mean an MLB TV subscriber is either an out-of-market fan like me who can’t watch his or her favorite team in-market, or a hardcore baseball fan who wants to watch even more baseball than what they can get from their local and national TV broadcasts. Were I not a subscriber to MLB.TV, I would need to subsist all summer long on box scores, highlights and the rare Reds national broadcast to follow my team.
Watch (and listen) on just about any device
No matter how big a fan I am or how much I enjoy streaming games on MLB.TV, I have neither the time nor the inclination to watch nine innings of baseball every night. My favorite part about MLB.TV is its wide device support that lets me catch parts of a game while I go about my day and evening.
I watch a few innings on the iPad in the kitchen while making dinner and a few more innings after dinner on my laptop when my son is playing on my iPad. And perhaps the last few outs on the big screen via my Apple TV. And when I can’t watch, I listen to the Reds’ radio call on my phone when I take the dog out for her evening stroll or during weekend yard work, which just so happens to coincide with Sunday day games.
MLB.TV offers broad hardware support.
Sarah Tew/CNET
MLB.TV is part of the free MLB app, which is available on a slew of devices, from phones and tablets to computers and game consoles to streaming boxes and smart TVs. Here’s the full list:
Mac and Windows PCs
iOS and Android phones and tablets
Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Chromecast streaming devices
PS4, PS5 and Xbox One game consoles
Samsung smart TVs
Xfinity Flex
You can get more details, including system requirements and specifics on supported models, on this MLB.com support page.
I tested MLB.TV on the devices I usually use to watch games: iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro and Apple TV. I also checked out MLB.TV on my Roku TV and a Windows PC.
Stat overlays and radio feeds
My preferred device for watching MLB.TV is the iPad. All devices give you access to stat overlays, but the iPad’s implementation is best. Swipe from the left edge and you can see a pitch-by-pitch summary of the game. Swipe from the right edge for the box score. A two-finger tap brings up both info panels along with scores of all the games along the top edge and a game-status panel along the bottom edge.
Stat overlays work well on the roomy iPad screen.
Matt Elliott/CNET
You get similar overlays on a phone, but there’s only two and the box score panel that slides up from the bottom edge blocks most of the screen. On an iPad, you can call up all four panels and can still see most of the game going on in the middle of the screen. On a PC, there’s only a single stat panel that you can toggle on and off on the right edge of the player.
MLB.TV lets you watch the home or away video feed so you can listen to your team’s announcers. And should you prefer your team’s radio announcers to the TV announcers, you can change the audio feed so you can listen to the radio call while still watching the video stream.
The ability to choose my audio feed is one of my favorite features.
Matt Elliott/CNET
Watching MLB.TV on an Apple TV has a benefit not offered on my other devices, including Roku. On the Apple TV, when you tune into a game in progress, you are given three options: Catch Up, Start from Beginning and Watch Live. The last two are self-explanatory, and the first is the option I usually select. It gives you 90 seconds of highlights from the action you missed before taking you to the live feed. On Roku, you can only join live or start from the beginning.
The Apple TV app has a cool catch-up feature.
Sarah Tew/CNET
As much as I like watching on the iPad, there’s no option to start watching a game other than to join it live. Why can’t every device offer the three options as Apple TV when I go to tune into a game that’s already in progress?
On all my devices and using both wired and wireless network connections, games streamed smoothly. They occasionally get choppy when on Wi-Fi, but such instances lasted only a few seconds or a minute at most before returning to HD clarity. A few seasons ago, I would avoid watching on my Apple TV because the video quality looked poor when displayed on my HDTV, but now streaming games on MLB.TV on my TV look no different than watching a game on ESPN on my TV via YouTube TV.
Ad-free highlights, repetitive ads during games
When I miss a game, I can watch the Game Recap highlight package on MLB.TV the next morning or a slightly longer Condensed Game. Each shows plays from the game without additional commentary; you hear the call from either the home or away announcer. There is also a collection of individual highlights you can fire up to see the big hits and outstanding defensive plays.
When watching highlights, as a subscriber you do not need to sit through ads. The highlights play immediately, letting you jump from one to another without the fear of an ad inserting itself in the middle of your review of the previous night’s game. Individual highlights are also available during a live game on about an inning-or-so delay.
You will see ads during the usual commercial breaks between innings and during pitching changes of live games, and they will get repetitive. We are not even a week into the season and I can safely say I’ve seen the ad for Duluth Trading Co. underwear enough times to last all summer. On the other hand, I never grow tired of hearing ad reads for Skyline Chili during Reds games even though each mention of Cincinnati’s unusual take on chili makes me wish I were back in the Queen City.
Beware big-market blackouts
For diehard baseball fans who don’t live near their favorite team, an MLB.TV subscription is the only way to follow your team day in and day out over the course of the long, 162-game, six-month season. I don’t take advantage of any of the extra video content and still think my subscription is money well spent just for the ability to tune into nearly every game live on TV or the radio and hear the Reds announcers no matter if my team is playing at home or on the road. My only word of caution is for out-of-market fans of big-market teams.
You access MLB.TV via the free MLB app, but be sure to check out how the blackout restrictions affect the team you follow before subscribing.
Sarah Tew/CNET
Baseball’s inequity between big- and small-market teams makes it difficult to be a fan of a small-market club like the Cincinnati Reds because my team loses its young stars as they enter their prime and misses out on free agents to big-market teams that can hand out huge contract after huge contract. An MLB.TV subscription might be the only thing in baseball where it’s an advantage to be a small-market fan.
To fans of the Yankees, Dodgers and other big-spending, big-market teams, I would say enjoy your team’s abundance of pitching, your deep lineup, your regular postseason appearances but be sure to check its national TV broadcast schedule before subscribing to MLB.TV. There’s not another option for out-of-market baseball fans that delivers the sheer volume of baseball of MLB.TV, but a Yankees fan who lives far from the Bronx, for example, might be able to satisfy their fandom with a pay TV service that includes ESPN, Fox, FS1, MLB Network and TBS instead — the channels that regularly show your team’s games that are blacked out on MLB.TV.

A Tour of My Home Live Streaming Studio
The post A Tour of My Home Live Streaming Studio appeared first on ProBlogger.
This year I’ve attempted to do live streaming Q&A sessions on the ProBlogger Facebook page on a weekly basis. I have noticed that each time I do go live, I’m getting more and more questions about my set up for live video – whether that’s about what camera I use, my lights, workflow process or the software that helps the whole production.
My set up has evolved over the last few years. Then, late in 2019, we moved into a new home which further pushed me to tweak my set up.
In our old home, most of my streaming happened from my desk but my new office has more room, so I wanted to create a ‘mobile’ video set up that would enable me to stream from different parts of the room.
I purchased a small mobile lectern and began to build my studio on it.
While I’m not sure it will ever be complete – as I’m constantly thinking about ways to improve – I decided recently to create a behind-the-scenes video of the set up.
youtube
Live Streaming Gear Mentioned in This Video
Sony A7 III
Sony 28mm f/2 lens
Sony 55mm f/1.8 Lens
Sony A6400 with a Sony 16mm f1.4mm (a good cheaper alternative)
Rode PodMic (XLR mic)
Rode Podcaster (USB mic)
RodeCaster Pro
Shure SM58 (XLR mic)
Neewer 480 LED Lights
Softbox for Neewer 480
LEDGO LG-B150
Manfrotto magic arm
Manfrotto superclamp
Ecamm Live
Elgato Camlink
Update: New Background Lights
Since filming this video I’ve also added a couple more lighting elements. I wanted to add a bit more color and interest in the background, so I picked up two options:
Aputure MC – this tiny light is amazing. It allows you to choose any color (full spectrum) and adjust intensity and saturation which makes it perfect for adding accent lighting in your background. I’ll use it in a similar way to the Ledgo lights mentioned in the video.
Philips Hue Lights – these ‘smart lights’ from Philips have been a lot of fun to play with. They’re not ‘studio lights’ by any means though but rather have been designed as lights for around the house. Via an app you can not only dim these lights but also choose any color of light that you want.
Initially, I picked up some light strips for behind the TV in our living room but loved them so much that I decided to get some hue lights for the office too.
I got some Hue Play lights which now sit behind my monitor and a couple of globes to go in lamps on my desk. I will use them as background lights in my videos but also am just enjoying having some backlight behind my monitor for when I work.
Here’s is how they look (excuse the lower quality iPhone photos please).
And here’s my latest Facebook Live where you can see those Hue lights in the background.
#AskMeAnything – Where are you watching from and how are you travelling?
If you have any questions/challegnes you think I might be able to help with please ask with ‘QUESTION’ at the start of your comment.

9 Things Every Healthcare Startup Should Know About Business Development
By ANDY MYCHKOVSKY
In this post, I write down all my strategy and business development knowledge in healthcare and organize it into the top 9 commandments for selling as a healthcare startup. I think everyone from the founder to the most junior person on the team should know these pillars because all startups must grow. I should also note these tenets are most applicable for selling into large enterprise healthcare incumbents (e.g., payers, providers, medical device, drug companies). Although I appreciate the direct-to-consumer game, these slices are less applicable for that domain. If your startup needs help developing or implementing your business development strategy, shoot me an email and we can discuss a potential partnership. Enjoy!
1. Understand Everything About the Product and Market
You must also understand the competitive landscape, who else is in the marketplace and how they appear differentiated? What has been their preferred go-to-market approach and is your startup capable of replicating a similar strategy with your current team members? Also, do you understand the federal and state policy that most affects your vertical, whether that be pharmaceutical or medical device (e.g., FDA), health plans (e.g., state insurance commissioners), or providers (e.g., CMS)? For example, if your company is focused on “value-based care” and shifting payment structures of physicians to downside risk, do you intimately understand The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) and the requisite CMS Demonstration Models from the Innovation Center (e.g., MSSP, BPCI-A, etc.)? Make sure you do or at least hire someone to explain what is important now and in the future.
2. Create A Compelling Pitch
In my opinion, creating a startup’s compelling pitch to an incumbent healthcare entity requires satisfying three factors: strategic, financial, and clinical. Surely, your healthcare startup’s machine learning, AI-backed, blockchain-enabled data analytics platform may someday deliver better clinical results in some way, however, if it has no monetizable value for the incumbent healthcare entity, your idea is not going to sell. Also, you cannot just focus on financial benefit, without weaving in some tangential use cases to further the clinical mission and receive buy-in from the medical community. These are complicated entities with a variety of stakeholders and macro environmental challenges that must be somehow improved by your product.
For example, a hospital is not equipped to move 100% of their payment into a full downside risk value-based care contract just because you have a care management platform and iPhone app. These entities employ tens of thousands of workers and operate on very slim profit margins and continual reinvestment into building new facilities. They also employ a ton of nurses performing care coordination, discharge planning, and bedside care, who have their own opinions on what works best for their local community. At the end of the day, these providers receive payment from private and governmental health plans, at varying negotiated rates. If your healthcare startups business model is predicated on keeping commercially-insured patients out of the hospital and instead, treated at home, you are literally cannibalizing the hospital’s highest margin revenue. Therefore, how do you suppose to improve their financials and support their recently opened new hospital wing by keeping patients out of the hospital? You better have a very compelling reimbursement argument and concept that satisfies the CFO’s concerns.
3. Organize Stakeholder Outreach
There are a million different ways to engage with prospects nowadays. If you use email campaigns, be sure to obtain verifiably accurate contact information. You can scrape information from online sources or publicly available lists. You can ask conferences to provide attendee lists if you sponsor a table or event. You can work with trade associations to obtain contact information on members who are most relevant to your product. Whatever you do, make sure you’re sending simple, yet compelling emails through an automated mailing system to track engagement and follow-up. Try different subject lines or sender names. Don’t include attachments or external links unless you’re willing to risk being diverted into the spam folders.
Regardless, don’t just rely on email blasts. That’s lazy thinking. You need to think multi-level marketing to crack through that executive ceiling. Are you attending the right conferences with a set list of individuals to target? Maybe you need to pay someone who has the right connections and is willing to make introductions in-person? Are you providing free content in the form of webinars or podcasts that is co-produced and therefore advertised by independent organizations that have already garnered the trust of a particular audience? Are you willing to sweet talk office managers at a local medical practice to get 15 minutes of the founding physician’s time? You need to find creative ways to engage your target audience, without ridiculous tactics like sending gingerbread houses during Christmas season to multi-billion dollar health system executives or solely relying on targeted Instagram ads. Remember, healthcare is hyper-local. If you need a meeting with the head of a single cardiology practice in Atlanta, GA, go find the head of the former board chair of the American College of Cardiology’s local chapter.
Over the past few years, a ton of digital health startups have focused on the self-insured employer market due to contracting flexibility. If you focus on self-insured employers, think about the pros and cons of working with channel partners. There are a couple giants that own the entire employee benefit design and health insurance broker game, including Willis Towers Watson, Aon, or Mercer. Typically, brokers receive a healthy 3-6% commission fee off the total premium covered for all employees. If you want immediate distribution of your product or service to millions of employees across the country, you might have to pay one of these brokers an extra fee to offer your goods. In addition, the brokers will be looking for your startup to benefit their clients, employers, to save medical spending and improve employee engagement.
4. Identify Early Themes During Initial Pitch
We all have great ideas. They sound good on paper, and the team is bought in. You even received executive approval from the founders to initiate your sales process. The only problem is that during the first few meetings, which were 30-minute introductory calls with non-decision makers, the pitch hasn’t resonated. It feels like you’re selling an Apple Watch when the buyer only wants to talk about sun dials. I thought healthcare was ready for innovation?
The reality is that your product, back to lesson #2, is not satisfying their strategic, financial, and clinical needs. Or you’ve done a poor job clearly articulating the vision and how your small startup will be able to meaningfully improve a problem the healthcare incumbent encounters. Perhaps you’re pitching a $5,000 per month SAAS solution that could yield 3 times the ROI in savings to an organization? The problem is, the same company just spent $500 million on an Epic electronic medical record (EMR) installation and is concerned about losing $10 million this quarter because of contract disputes with a large payer. Sometimes your product just isn’t big enough to garner an executive audience. In that case, think about positioning your product with flexible pricing or partnership terms in a way that a middle-manager won’t need executive approval to sign.
Maybe you’re talking to a health plan about reducing dermatology spend because you have the latest and greatest technology, but the entire healthcare market is focused on providing cheaper transportation benefits to patients to reduce missed appointments (i.e., Uber, Lyft). That’s all anyone ever talks about at conferences you attend. If you’re the 10th most important thing that a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is thinking about, either create a more compelling reason why they should change their list or find a different size stakeholder who is more immediately affected by your service.
5. Maintain Interest Level and Dig Deeper
Now that you have initial interest, continue to build momentum. It is incredibly easy to walk out of an initial meeting, with both parties having enjoyed the 30- or 60-minute conversation, but never move forward. Life is complicated and people get busy. You might think your healthcare startup is the next best thing since garlic knots, but that healthcare executive has 5 more pitches this week from other companies in your space. They also have budgets, HR issues, and bosses to deal with themselves. After a while, your follow-up emails and phone calls seem akin to your ex-boyfriend’s pitiful attempts. Reassess your strategy before further annoyance.
Can you introduce them to compelling referenceable clients that will speak kindly about your startup? Not in a way that seems cheesy, but able to articulate the good, the bad, and how your startup remedied the bad so it never happens again. If possible, these should be peers. A vice president at a fortune 50 drug manufacturer likely doesn’t want to talk to a junior-person at a small biotech startup. Know your audience and adapt. If the references don’t exist, are there other things you can do to “wow” the client? Do you have a demo? Can you analyze some of their data? Is someone on your team able to answer one of their questions via a mini-consulting project? Do you have an invite to a closed-door event that features some interesting topic area? At the very least, you have a Board of Directors, management team, and investors. Hopefully one of those can help build rapport at an executive level, in addition to your individual efforts.
6. Develop Detailed Partnership Terms
I am a strong proponent of protecting the company you work for during partnership discussions, but sometimes startups need to acknowledge the importance of closing a new partnership deal. You need to be flexible. You are a small healthcare startup negotiating against a large, bureaucratic organization with tons of legal representation. Don’t waste time debating term sheet after term sheet. It doesn’t matter if its non-binding. Discuss and agree on the high-level key structure, and then propose a draft of your definitive agreement or master services agreement with all the bells and whistles. This is going to take a while, so buckle in and try to set expectations on closing. By this time, if you’re good, you will have likely already signed an NDA and perhaps, a letter of intent (LOI) discussing the spirit of your partnership discussions with appropriate confidentiality and expectations around timing of a go or no-go decision.
Now you need to actually put pen to paper and define what your startup will provide to the healthcare company. They will want more details on data privacy than you have to provide. They will want to know detailed clinical workflows describing your process. They will want a detailed step-by-step breakdown of all the resources and time required by their staff and management, in order to be successful. Worst case scenario is that your product requires more time to be successful by the client’s team, than the benefit your product provides. You need to just survive and answer all their questions to the best of your ability. If you hit a brick wall, at some point just tell them honestly that you’re working on addressing a few of their concerns and they will be finalized before go-live.
7. Be Flexible Yet Confident During Negotiation
How important is this deal to you and the startup? If this potential client is your Moby Dick, then be prepared to make some adjustments to your base terms. Nothing in life is 100% favorable, nor should it be since a partnership includes two parties. One good referencable client can help make a splash in media, attract new investors, improve morale of the team, and light a fire under other potential clients who are dragging their feet. However, at some point the deal doesn’t make any sense for your startup. It pays too little, with too many requirements, and too low a probability that the partnership will expand by the time you need it. If this is the case, I hope your creative top-of-funnel strategy has successfully opened the doors of a few different clients at the same time. You should be moving down the funnel with as many prospects in parallel as possible. Don’t get sucked into focusing all your time on one pursuit, because Murphy’s Law exists.
Is the contract value of a new deal significant after go-live and highly sticky in terms of client retention? Meaning, once you sign this new partnership, do you have this healthcare incumbent locked in for a few years that drives significant revenue for your startup? If yes, then don’t die on the hill over fighting about implementation fees. Sometimes the cost of doing business in the medium or long-term requires short-term pain. If you need more funding to build functionality, think about managing your burn rate to account for this potential scenario. Does it feel like the liability section of the contract grew twice as large and shifted most of the responsibility to your tiny startup? That’s probably going to happen and you can’t do much about it. When you’re first starting out, the healthcare incumbents have the most leverage. It’s not a perfect scenario, but make sure the key fees and services are reasonable, and unfortunately accept the rest as the price of doing business.
8. Set Clear Expectations for Implementation and Go-Live
I love closing deals. But don’t set your implementation team up for failure. If they physically or technologically cannot meet the standards you’ve promised to the healthcare incumbent executive, and you’ve placed accompanying service level agreements (SLAs) with financial penalties owed by your startup, this is a bad deal. If you sign a deal that so drastically exaggerates the profitability of the partnership by limiting the minimum operational expenses required to perform, this is a bad deal. Don’t leave the account lead and operational teams out to dry, because there are real reputational risks associated with a bad deal in the healthcare industry. Executives all grew up together, hang out with one another, and move from organization to organization. If your startup is known as the one who can’t deliver on its promises, that will likely come back to bite the business development efforts and certainly impact churn rate and likelihood of harsh renegotiations with existing partners.
Overpromising and under-delivering in healthcare has real consequences. It won’t result in just someone’s food arriving late or e-commerce store unexpectedly shutting down, healthcare startups could meaningful harm a patient’s life. This of course represents the constant tension between sales and operations. I do believe that business development teams should do a better job at explaining the intricacies of the deal-making process to ensure the rest of the company understands the need for some flexibility. If everyone else feels like the sales leaders are the dumbest people at the company, you should remind them that everyone gets fired if the company doesn’t grow. Just don’t be an awful human being while discussing this matter.
9. Celebrate
No matter the outcome, a good business development team should celebrate the large and small wins. I’m not talking about trips to Hawaii, but you need to infuse some degree of optimism in your startup. Lack of growth causes a lot of problems. Sometimes you will get lucky, and the incumbent healthcare entity will take a chance on your product or team, despite lack of case studies or sophistication. However, that is increasingly becoming rarer each day. Therefore, any new partnership that will further the mission and grow the startup should be rewarded both financially and publicly across the company. With that being said, don’t act like your business development skills and compelling personality single-handedly closed the deal. Your team members across a variety of other departments all played a part, directly and indirectly. The engineering team built the product that was ultimately sold. The marketing team helped elevate the brand in the marketplace. The operational teams satisfied existing partners expectations so that they would provide positive reference calls.
In addition, the business development lead oftentimes has significant support in putting together materials, prepping for meetings, setting up logistics, managing subject matter experts, and reviewing legal contracts. I can bet that certain business development leaders think they’re Michael Jordan. Except, they forget that the Chicago Bulls didn’t beat the Detroit Pistonswithout Scottie Pippen and the rest of the team. Basically, if you’re the head of business development, show your team lots of love for the hard work and hours they’ve put in for far less financial reward.

Digimon Links
As of this article, Digimon Links has been out for well over a year in Japan, but has been out for approximately two days in the US and Australia. If Canada is included, I am willing to edit a post-script to indicate otherwise, but mroe important that technicalities is the game itself: is Digimon Links a good game?
Digimon Links is an mobile game, currently found on Google Play and soon available on the App Store for iPhone users. The story is surprisingly engaging: as a user of an app that allows you to communicate with a universe both parallel and directly connected to our world’s internet, known simply as the Digital World. This the home of the eponymous Digital Monsters in the game title. But as your tour of the Digital world begins, “something happens” that results in the Digital World becoming almost completely deleted.
I say “almost” because your guide in the introduction of the game, Hina, uses your mobile device as a quarantine space to prevent the deletion of the Digital World entirely. Now, it’s up to you as the player to raise Digimon to collect data clusters to rebuild the Digital World.
Gameplay-wise, there are a few differing variations: exploring the different servers of the real world in the hopes of gathering more clusters to rebuild the Digital World; rebuilding the small patch of the Digital World by placing Facilities on an island in the style of resource-management town-building simulators; raising and Digivolving your Digimon; and a PvP Coliseum that as of this writing has yet to open. As you progress through Story Quests while Exploring, you will unlock more Facilities and gather more Clusters that you use as the equivalent of in-game currency to upgrade different Facilities to improve what they do. For example, upgrading your Restaurant increases your maximum stamina, which is expended each time you complete a Quest.
The small island you reside over happens to grow meat that allows you to grant small amounts of instant EXP to any Digimon you choose, per piece of meat. Meanwhile, there is a Lab that allows you to train In-Training Digimon by leaving them in the Garden section of the Lab until they are ready to Digivolve naturally. The Lab also houses the ability to perform a Version Upgrade of Digimon, or to Research Two Mega-level Digimon in an attempt to create a new DIgiEgg. If the Base Mega Didigmon has Maxed out its Friendship, the Digiegg will be +1, improving the overall potential of the hatched Digimon.
Digivolution is the game’s way of improving the abilities of a Digimon, allowing a low-tier Rookie Digimon to become a Champion-level Digimon, then an Ultimate, and finally Mega. Literally any Digimon can become a Mega-level Digimon if you’re patient enough. But for those that want a Digimon with a higher level instantly, there is the Rare Capture area. At the cost of 20 Digistones, the Premium Currency, you are guaranteed a Rookie Digimon at minimum, or a Mega-Level Digimon at most. There may be variances based on events occurring at the time; for example, during the first month of the game’s release, there was a special Release Anniversary Megafest Capture, guaranteeing a Mega if you perform a 10-Digimon Capture. There is also the Link Capture, where you spend Link Points to get In-Training Digimon.
But just because a Digimon is a low-tier Digimon doesn’t meant necessarily that it’s not going to be useful. Sometimes, Digimon can also have Leader skills, offering passive buffs to your party when put in the leader slot of the team, or a powerful Legacy Skill, an attack that can be transferred to another Digimon with the use of the Dojo, another available facility, at the cost of the Digimon with the ability you want to transfer. The Dojo also has the ability to add additional elemental resistances to a Digimon you have, by using smaller amounts of Digivolution Fuel and a copy of the same type of Digimon. Next is the Chip Factory, where your Chips will be held. By adding Chips to your Digimon, you can augment their abilities even further and improve your chances in the Quests. The option to purchase Chips will presumably be available in the future, but as of this article’s completion date, they are not yet available.
In the Quests, you take a team of three Digimon into a server to do battle against multiple waves of enemy Digimon. The battles themselves run in a pretty straight-forward turn-based battle system: the top left circle to the upper right of each status box, next to each Digimon’s name, indicates how many attacks until that specific Digimon’s turn. The bar beneath the Digimon’s name is their Health Points, and works the same as HP in conceivably almost any other RPG: it hits zero, that Digimon is defeated. Below the HP is the AP bar, for Action Points, are they are used to perform A Signature and Legacy Skill of your choice. Each time a new round begins, every Digimon gets one AP. Each time a single Digimon’s attack lands with a Critical Hit, they gain an extra AP. The quest continues until the enemy Digimon are all defeated. There is also the Auto-battle button near the upper-right of the screen, which can be useful to getting lower-level digimon to level up via quests in you’re low. But much like a lot of focus-intensive RPGs, if you just set it and forget it, eventually you will lose handily because you weren’t paying attention. Still, if you have an idea of what all the Digimon in a level are weak to Resistance-wise, you can give it a shot anyway.
Afterward, your team of Digimon gain experience points, Clusters, and Digivolution Fuel. They also let your Digimon attain Friendship Points. After set intervals can improve your Digimon’s stats, encouraging you to battle with those Digimon frequently, even after maxing out their level. There are also quests for gathering elemental Digivolution Fuel necessary for Digivolving higher-level Digimon. Eventually, you will gain access to Advent Quests, special quests that grant you access to Mega-Specific Digivolution Fuel.
There are also the Co-Op Quests as well, allowing you to team up with other players and their partner Digimon. This nets you Link Points as well, but it comes with its own unique challenges: instead of each Digimon having their set pool of AP, you share one as a team, and gain 3 AP at the start of each round. To assist communication, you have a set of stickers that can get a simple message across in terms of discussing strategy. Now comes the big question: How does the game balance the Premium Currency of Digi-Stones? How they are balanced can be seen by the purchase screen: 6 digistones are worth 99 cents, and the other amounts of Digi-Stones being sold remain consistent with that selling value. 3.99 gets you 24 Digi-Stones, 9.99 gets you 60, and so on. It’s honestly slightly refreshing not to see a large spiky sticker saying that the best possible value is to spend a ridiculous amount of money on the most possible Digi-Stones. Though to be technical, you get 490 instead of the expected 480; the improvement is absolutely minimal. As for obtaining the Digi-Stones in other ways, you gain 2 for every level you clear in Exploring, and you gain more by completing Missions, such as performing a certain number of Digivolutions, completing an Area during Exploration, and any other things. However, many of the Missions grant you Clusters and Link Points instead. You can also gain Digi-Stones based on the currently-running events in the game as well; by gaining 10 by logging in for a day, and an additional 10 for the event’s occurrence, for example. When you compare it out with the minimum 20 required to obtain at least 1 Rookie-level Digimon, it feels fairly balanced... dangerously so, to be honest. There is a very distinct chance that changes in purchasing habits overall may have an effect of the value of Digistones overall. If we’re being honest, if the amount required to get a new Digimon reduced by a fourth, it would feel a bit more sensible compared to most other games. However, the nature of this game lends itself to dedication moreso than simply just paying-to-win.Overall, I feel my time so far has been enjoyable, and I hope that eventual upgrades to Digimon LInks will provide me with more Digimon, more Quests, and more fun.Digimon Links is currently available on the Google Play Store, with an App Store release pending.

The man behind Fortnite is making the riskiest bet of his career. The payoff could be huge
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/the-man-behind-fortnite-is-making-the-riskiest-bet-of-his-career-the-payoff-could-be-huge/
The man behind Fortnite is making the riskiest bet of his career. The payoff could be huge
The CEO and founder of Epic Games has had a knack for picking the right battles while also shoring up his company’s independence. Fortnite, the company’s blockbuster battle royale game, recently topped more than 15 million concurrent players and has spawned a universe of fandom. Epic challenged established platforms by launching its own digital video game storefront. And the multi-billion dollar company developed the Unreal Engine, a proprietary software for making its own video games that it licenses out to other developers and animators.
Now Sweeney, 50, is embarking on the biggest battle in his company’s 30-year history: Epic is suing Apple and Google in a legal challenge that could remake the future of the digital economy.
“Epic’s frustration with Apple especially, and Google to some extent, had been building up for at least three years. Ever since Fortnite grew to have a large audience, we felt stifled by several things,” Sweeney told Appradab Business during a December interview.
Launched in 2017, Fortnite quickly became a phenomenon. When it first debuted, Epic charged $40 to download the game — a typical price. But the company quickly pivoted to a riskier business model, betting that offering Fortnite as a free-to-play game with in-app purchases of digital items like outfits would generate more overall revenue.
The bet paid off. Though Epic has raked in billions off Fortnite’s in-game purchases — about $1.3 billion in 2020 and $1.8 billion in 2019, according to Nielsen’s gaming division SuperData — the company balked at paying a chunk of that revenue to app store owners like Apple and Google. If a player downloaded Fortnite from Apple’s App Store, for example, Apple would receive a 30% cut of all in-app purchases.
Sweeney believed that requirement violated antitrust laws because it forced developers to use Apple and Google’s payment systems.
So Epic spent months developing its battle plan to fight Apple, which it codenamed “Project Liberty,” he said.
The company prepped a 60-page lawsuit and created a video that parodied Apple’s classic “1984” commercial, for good measure.
On August 13, Project Liberty was sprung into action — a plan that sought to force the tech giants into response.
In a blog post, Epic encouraged Fortnite users to pay the company directly for in-app purchases. Both Google and Apple promptly removed Fortnite from their stores, alleging the company violated their terms of service. Epic then filed lawsuits against each of the companies, in which Epic argued the courts should intervene and order Apple and Google to allow developers to sell in-app purchases without the 30% revenue cut.
“Epic’s problem is entirely self-inflicted and is in their power to resolve,” Apple said in a statement. “Epic has been one of the most successful developers on the App Store, growing into a multibillion dollar business that reaches millions of iOS customers around the world. We very much want to keep the company as part of the Apple Developer Program and their apps on the Store.”
Google responded that it had “consistent policies that are fair to developers” and that Fortnite had violated those rules. “However, we welcome the opportunity to continue our discussions with Epic and bring Fortnite back to Google Play,” it added.
For Sweeney, who spoke to Appradab Business via video call from his home, the battle against Apple and Google is about more than just a 30% cut of its revenue.
“I grew up in a time in which anybody could make software. This is my first computer, an Apple II,” said Sweeney, gesturing towards the iconic blocky, grey machine on the desk behind him. “You turn it on and it comes up with a programming language prompt,” he continued. “So I felt all along that open platforms are the key to free markets and the future of computing.”
Early dreams
In 1991, a young, 20-something Sweeney founded Epic, then known as Potomac Computer Systems, as a way to sell copies of a video game he made himself. He ran the company out of his parents’ house in Maryland.
While Epic produced its own shooter games like Fire Fight and Unreal, it also began licensing its game development technology to other game makers in the late 1990s. This became the Unreal Engine, a ubiquitous game software which is now an essential part of Epic’s business. Between 2012 and 2017, Epic survived mostly on revenue generated from the Unreal Engine’s licensing fees, said Sweeney. Today, the Unreal Engine is also used in animation, such as creating scenes for Disney’s “The Mandalorian.”
Sweeney said he always envisioned Epic as a multi-faceted business. He wanted Epic to both make and sell games — and create and license the tools used to make them.
One part of that equation was, of course, Fortnite.
From the outset, Epic has always has always had outsized ambitions for Fortnite. The game has dozens of crossovers each year, from Marvel’s Avengers to Star Wars. It hosts massive virtual concerts and gives gamers endless shiny features, with the aim that there’s something new each time a player logs on. But the breakneck speed of development allegedly had a real cost for its workers, some of whom told gaming publication Polygon in 2019 that they regularly worked 70-hour weeks. Since then, Epic has made changes including hiring more people, soliciting more employee feedback, offering unlimited paid time off and mandating company-wide vacations, according to the company.
Epic’s decision in 2018 to expand into selling third-party games created yet another business opportunity, and yet another fight against the establishment. By launching its own games store, and cutting out the middleman, Epic was attempting to break into an already thriving market for PC games that was, at the time, dominated by Steam, a popular games store.
“We had to move mountains in order to have any chance of gaining traction at all,” said Sweeney. Epic’s store attracted attention for splashy stunts like giving away Grand Theft Auto V, which is the best-selling game in the US in the last decade, according to NPD Group.
While the Epic Games Store has gained momentum, attracting over 160 million PC users and generating over $700 million in purchases last year according to the company, critics object to its exclusive deals that keep certain games out of other stores. Sweeney has defended his position, saying the store exclusives are a reasonable strategy that helps Epic compete against Steam.
In 2019, Epic acquired social media app Houseparty and later announced it would add voice chat to Fortnite through the app.
The company was valued at $17.3 billion as of 2020, making Sweeney a billionaire.
Uniquely positioned
While investors of Epic include Tencent, which has a 39% stake, and Sony, which purchased a 1.4% stake in 2020 for $250 million, Sweeney remains the CEO and controlling shareholder.
Competitor Roblox has announced its plans for a direct listing and Unity — a rival to Unreal — went public in 2020. But Epic Games has little interest in an IPO.
“We’re still a highly independent company who’s not beholden to public markets in which we have to show ever-increasing profits,” said Sweeney. “And anything like a fight like this [with Apple and Google], which loses us money for a year or more, would never be tolerated. So we have the financial independence to do that.”
Epic’s business model gives it a flexibility that other tech companies don’t necessarily have.
“Unlike Facebook, iOS doesn’t drive the majority of Epic’s revenues. Unlike Spotify or Netflix, Epic is highly profitable,” said Matthew Ball, a former Amazon Studios executive and strategist who has penned over 20,000 words on Fortnite and Epic. “And unlike almost all other large companies, Epic is private and majority controlled by one person.”
Ball added that the fight with Apple and Google didn’t come without sacrifices for Epic, which might see avid iPhone users find other games to replace Fortnite as the app spends months if not years in legal purgatory. “But Epic is uniquely able to push back,” he said.
What’s at stake
Sweeney declined to say how much the company is spending on legal fees, but he said that the fight to take on Apple and Google is costing “lots and lots” of senior leadership time.
And the ban on Fortnite in app stores is costing the company plenty in lost revenue. Fortnite users have spent about $1.2 billion globally on the game on iOS since its launch, according to mobile app tracker Sensor Tower.
Epic’s case against Apple is expected to go to trial in May. Google is seeking to have Epic’s suit dismissed in a hearing scheduled on February 18.
Such a public fray has unnerved some developers, who fear that Apple might go a step further and remove apps from its store simply for being built using the Unreal Engine, which it briefly threatened to do last August.
“We were legitimately planning to switch to Unreal for our next VR project but after Tim decided to poke the bear we decided it wasn’t [worth] the risk,” game developer Ryan Engle tweeted in December. “I love Epic and Unreal, but business is business and the real-world consequences of Apple banning Epic is too much risk for us.”
Sweeney responded saying that Engle’s “fear of retaliation by Apple” was shared by many developers, but Epic would “fight on just the same!”
Epic is also risking Fortnite’s market share on iOS and Android platforms, as fans may turn to other games during the legal battle. On Android devices, Fortnite can be downloaded from Epic’s website and app stores other than Google’s Play Store, so while access is hindered, it’s not eliminated. However on Apple devices, the game can no longer be downloaded at all.
Sweeney also faced backlash in November for controversially comparing Fortnite’s legal battle to the civil rights movement.
“The point is if you really want to make a difference, you have to buck the system,” Sweeney said in response to the criticism. “I think there’s a lot we can learn from any of the past struggles in humanity and I think it’s perfectly healthy to apply struggles from vital causes in the history of the world to struggles over smaller issues like software platforms.”
Returning to court
For Epic Games and Sweeney, the risks are worthwhile. Sweeney fears a dystopian future where tech platforms are dominated by a few companies and the most successful apps are cloned by those companies to maximize profits.
“[The companies] will just do that industry by industry and app category by app category until they’ve gobbled up everything that matters. And who will be left?” said Sweeney. “A million indie developers who collectively together make a small percentage of revenues on the app store because these businesses are too small to be attractive to steal.”
In what Epic’s best case scenario, the court could rule that Apple and Google are prohibited from bundling payment services with their app stores, allowing developers to be paid directly, according to legal experts.
But if Epic loses, it will at least make clear what the limits of antitrust law are, so people with similar grievances can look to appeal Congress for antitrust reform, according to John Bergmayer, legal director of consumer rights group Public Knowledge.
“I think [Epic winning the lawsuits] would be pretty good for the markets overall,” said Mitch Stoltz, senior staff attorney of the nonprofit digital rights group Electronic Frontier Foundation, in an August interview. “You’d see more experimentation. You’d see more business models. You’d see more innovation.”
As for Sweeney, he’s optimistic Epic can change the industry.
“It’s Epic fighting or pressing for change and succeeding, and it’s not that unusual,” he said. “We’ve done it many times and everybody in the industry has benefited often.”

Historic Amateur Radio Contact Reported via Moon-Orbiting Satellite
A contact between a radio amateur in Germany and China took place on July 1 via the moon-orbiting LO-4 satellite, DSLWP-B, launched in May 2018. The two-way exchange between Reinhard Kuehn, DK5LA, in Soerup, Germany, and Harbin Institute of Technology club station BY2HIT (operated by Wei Mingchuan, BG2BHC), in Harbin, China, occurred between 0551 and 0728 UTC, according to reports. The GMSK-to-JT4G repeater onboard DSLWP-B was used to make the contact, the first ever made via a lunar-orbiting repeater.
“Using the GMSK-to-JT4G repeater is not easy, in terms of the signal power needed for the uplink,” commented radio amateur and engineer Daniel Estévez, EA4GPZ, whose blog includes images of the lunar surface downloaded via DSLWP-B. “There were plans to make a QSO between BY2HIT and Reinhard since many months ago, but previous attempts didn’t work out. My congratulations to the people at both sides of the QSO, who have achieved it a month before DSLWP-B crashes against the lunar surface.”
As Estévez explained it, the GMSK-to-JT4G repeater works by sending commands to the satellite that embed a 13-character message, using the same frequency and a similar protocol to the one that commands the camera and other satellite functions. He said sending a message in this fashion takes a little longer than 1 minute.
An open telecommand protocol allows radio amateurs to take and download images, and DSLWP-B transmitted images of the moon and Earth during this week’s solar eclipse. DSLWP-B was launched as a secondary payload with the Quequiao relay satellite as part of the Chang’e 4 mission to the far side of the moon. Last September, some earthbound radio amateurs and sky watchers received images from the tiny satellite as it orbited the moon.
DSLWP stands for “Discovering the Sky at Longest Wavelengths Pathfinder,” and was designed to test low-frequency radio astronomy and space-based interferometry. The repeater uplink is on 2 meters and the downlink is on 70 centimeters.

If I really do not have to carry a big bag with me, I attempt not to. There are only a couple matters I actually will need for situations or evenings out: ID, credit history card, keys, income, and modest makeup goods. This clutch is the slim, very well-created accent to maintain and organize it all.
I like the focused slots to retain my cards divided and prepared to obtain in seconds, and my most loved element is the floating central divider with a magnetic closure. You can retail store escape-susceptible essentials like your mobile phone or coins right here, but I individually use it only for my pretty significant condominium vital. It manufactured finding by means of all the airport check-in and stability procedures a lot easier and smoother since I could keep all the things that my lover and I would have to have to hand over all in a person location.
For what it is well worth, I experienced gotten a really lovely (but nominal) passport and ticket holder in the course of the holidays in anticipation of my excursion to Italy, but I finished up liking the versatility of this Bellroy travel wallet so a lot that I really don’t even know if I’ll at any time use that passport holder. There’s no independent pocket for modify, but the slender condition is worthy of the likelihood of occasional inconvenience. I was capable to pack it with a notepad and a passport, which, sentimental value aside, is why I favored it in the 1st location. But I’m not traveling so a lot at the moment, and switching above to a a lot more slimline wallet appeared a lot more realistic.
Bellroy’s wallets are designed with a substantial-conclude, whole-grain leather-based that’s gentle sufficient (and lies flat sufficient) that it is not much too cumbersome. What I like most are the two pockets in the billfold, which are very good for cash, but much more importantly to me, little points I could otherwise reduce, these as SD cards for my digital camera, or SIM cards when I’m touring amongst distinctive international locations. I’m pleasantly shocked with how significantly I can control to keep in this wallet, and I’ll hold on to it for as extensive as I can. – Owen Burke, senior reporter
